When you enter the lab (or classroom)…

Do not touch lab or activity materials until you are instructed to do so by Ms. M!!!

Eye Protection

Goggles on with…Heat, Glass, and Chemicals.

Know where the eye flush is…if chemicals get in your eyes, they need to be flushed for no less than 15 minutes.

Don’t look directly into the opening of a test tube or beaker.

Tell Ms. M if something gets in your eyes.

This Puke Green Mystery Animal…

..forgot to where his goggles during Science lab.

Clothing Protection

No baggy clothesNo dangling jewelryNo sandals or flip-flopsPull long hair backWear an apron if requiredTell Ms. M if you get chemicals on your

clothes.

Little Sally forgot to pull back her hair in lab.

…and apparentlyforgot her goggles, too.

Hand Safety

Wear proper heat-resistant gloves when working with heat.

Wear protective gloves when handling chemicals.

If you think something is hot…don’t touch it!

Tell Ms. M if you get burned by heat or chemicals.

Heat Safety

No hairspray or hair gel on lab dayPoint heated test tube or beaker away

from yourself and others.No roughhousing in the lab!!!Know your fire evacuation route.Know the location of allfire extinguishers and fire blankets

Electric Safety

Don’t plug things in so that people may trip on the chord.

Don’t let the chord hang over the table. Do not use equipment with damaged chords. Don’t plug something in with wet hands! Never use an electrical appliance around

water! No rough housing in the lab!!! Turn off and unplug electrical equipment when

you leave the room.

Ms. M tripped over a loose chord left on the floor.

Chemical Safety

Never mix chemicals unless Ms. M tells you to!

Never touch, taste, or smell chemicals unless you are otherwise instructed.

Add acid to water – never the opposite.No roughhousing in the lab!!!

Sharp Object Safety

Place object you are cutting on a solid surface (never in your hand)

Cut away from yourself!No roughhousing in the lab!!!

Safety Contract

Get your safety contract signed ASAPOtherwise you will not be able to

participate in labs.

Lab Safety Violation

1. Warning

2. 1st Lab Safety Violation (needs to be signed by your parent) – sit out for one lab

3. 2nd Lab Safety Violation (needs to be signed by your parent), administration will be notified – sit out for three labs

4. Administrative Referral

At the end of class…

Clean up your areaWhen washing glassware- be very

careful- it can be slipperyIf you break glass – tell Ms. M

immediately.Do not attempt to clean up the glass

yourself
