OVERVIEW Canoe Our proposal for LandMarks 2017 is to carve a canoe out of a decomposing log/nursing tree within Stanley Park. This canoe would be a semi- permanent art work that would remain in the park and assist the log’s decomposition. It would incorporate Indigenous knowledges of Coast Salish weaving and carving, and represent a communal, and multicultural space of working together, and moving forward. Figure 1. This research looked at the politics of naming, colonialism and colonial sites, and multiple histories. Our research led us to question the histories of Stanley Park, specifically to question colonial narratives that surround Canada’s complex national identity. Our research into Indigenous politics and histories inspired our group to create a project that looks at Stanley Park as a shared site for many Nations. To facilitate our research, we looked at artists whose work and practices challenge colonial narratives and deconstructs concepts of National identity.

1.OVERVIEWCanoeOurproposalforLandMarks2017istocarveacanoeoutofadecomposinglog/nursingtreewithinStanleyPark.Thiscanoewouldbeasemi-permanentartworkthatwouldremainintheparkandassistthelog’sdecomposition.ItwouldincorporateIndigenousknowledgesofCoastSalishweavingandcarving,andrepresentacommunal,andmulticulturalspaceofworkingtogether,andmovingforward.

Whenwestartedourbrainstormingprocess,weturnedtothecanoeasaspace/placeofinteresttoexploretheseideas.Initially,ourgrouphadenvisionedthreecanoestorepresenttheland,sea,andsky;eachcanoecouldbefoundinthemiddleofaforest,onabeach,andupinatree.However,welaterrevisedthisideaandcollectivelydecidedtofocusonone.Thisdecisionwasbaseduponrealizingtheamountofwork,skill,andtechnicalissuesthatarisefromhavingthreecanoes,andmoreimportantlytheprotocolsconcerningcanoesbythewater. SomeofthereadingsthatinformeduswerewritingsbySelenaCouture,SusanPoint,TaniaWillard,BrianDavidThom,andMichelFoucault. TheprojectwasalsoinspiredbyourtimespenttouringinStanleyParkwithCeaseWyss,SelenaCouture,JinHan,andLauraleighPaul.WelearnedaboutIndigenousandinvasiveplantsandecosystems,andfoundinspirationineco-artistswhoseworkutilizedplantspecies.Thistimeallowedustoreflectonourproject,withanapproachthatwouldrespectthenaturallandscapeandindigenousplantspecies.OurresearchintotheecologyofStanleyParkinspiredustoutilizeinvasiveplantspeciesintoweavings,andtocreateanurse-logwhichwouldsupportnativeplantspecies-thuspromotingtheeco-systemofthesite.EnvironmentalMonitor/Educator,LauraleighPaul,hasalsosupportedtheideaofusingweavinginvasivespeciesaspartofourcanoe;weplantoremainincontactwithherandtheEcologySocietythroughoutthisprojectbytakingworkshopsthatwouldaidusintheseprocesses. Thelogusedtocreateourpiecewillfollowtheparkboardregulationstominimizethedisturbanceinnaturalhabitats;wemetandspokewithLauraleighPaulattheStanleyParkEcologySocietytohelpuslocatethelogsthatwouldbeappropriateforthisproject.AllofthelogsthatLauraleighhadshownuswereeitherclosetotrails,and/oreasilyaccessibletothepublic.Outoftheselectionoffelledhemlocks,onedouglas,andonecedarlog,wewillmostlikelyusethedouglasorcedarduetoitssoftwood,andaccessiblelocationwhilstavoidingmajorcrowding/childrenzonessuchastheVancouverAquarium(seebelow).

Creatingacollaborativeprojectthatincludedthecomplexhistoriesof

Canada,whileutilizingournewly-acquiredknowledgeoflocalecologyandplantspecies,weseektocreateaprojectthatspeakstothelocallandscape.InutilizingandlearningIndigenouscarvingandweavingpracticesforthiscanoeguidedandsharedbyCoastSalishartistRoxanneCharles’Indigenousknowledgeandskills,weseektoacknowledgetheCoastSalishancestorsofthislandwhilebeingawareofthediversityofourownculturesandartisticbackgroundsthatboardthisboat.Forthemostpart,wewillbeusingRoxanne’scarvingtoolsforthispiece,althoughwemayneedtorent/purchasemoreequipmentdependentonwhichlogweendupchoosing;thedouglashasverymoist,spongywoodthatcaneasilytearawaytobemoldedbyhand,however,thecedarisslightlyharderwhichmayrequirethehelpofanelectricsaw(toberentedfromSFU).

Wewillbeworkingonsiteattheparkandabidebyparkrulesandhoursduringthecarvingprocess,andfurthermore,willcontinuetowatchforpassersbyandrespectournaturalenvironmentbycausinglittletonodamageofthespace.

Ourtotalcostoftoolscometobe$400,thoughourtotalbudgetshouldnot

exceed$800(includingpotentialcostsofreplacingoraddingtools).

3.CONCEPT

Ourconceptofourpiecesurroundsthecreationandtheideasofacanoe.Thecanoeisacelebrationofbringingpeopletogetherintermsofitscreationanditspurposeoftravellingincommunity.Ourpiecetakesontheseideasasarecreationofanabstractcanoe,usingafallingtreeasthebaseofourwork,wehopetohastentheprocessofthefallentreeintoanursinglog.ThroughthereadingsofMiwonKwonandherdistinctionsofpublicartprojects,ourproposedpiececanbeseenasartinpublicplacesandartaspublicspaces.OurproposedcanoeactsasanartworkinapublicplacethatwillenrichtheenvironmentasthelogslowlydecaysandgivebacktoothernativespeciesinStanleyPark.Howeverthepiececanalsobeseenasartasapublicspaceduetothemerefactthattheabstractcanoeisaplaceofgathering.Theconceptofourpieceisn’tonlyaboutthefinalproductbutalsotheprocessandtheknowledgeofcreatingthiscanoe.Theyareseenasequalcounterpartsthatservehowthepieceisperceivedbothphysicallyandconceptually. PartoftheLaboratoryLandscapecourseexploresthelegacyofcolonialsites,andhowthesesitesbecomeapartofcomplexCanadianhistories.Thisprojectseekstoaddresscomplexhistoriesinacollaborativeandthoughtfulproject.OurprojectseekstoexplorethehistoryofStanleyparkasasitewithasharedterritoryamongtheCoastSalishpeoples–theMusqueamFirstNation,Tsleil-waututhFirstNation,andtheSquamishFirstNation.TheprojectalsoseekstoexploreCanadianhistory

asonelinkedtomigration-manynon-IndigenousmigrantstravelledtoCanadabyboat.ThecanoebecomesrepresentativeofCanada’shistories,andthetargetviewerswillbeparkgoerswhohappenbythesite.Canoesandboatsarefoundinmanyculturesaroundtheworld–however,itisimportantforourprojecttoberespectfulofthelocalFirstNations’privateandhereditaryknowledge.BuildingatraditionalCoastSalishcanoewouldrequirepermissionsfromthelocalFirstNationsandelders.However,ourprojectisnotatraditionalorformalcanoebutratheranabstractionderivedfromnature.

Someoftheartistswhosepracticedrawsattentiontothecomplexhistoriesoflandandlandscapethatinspiredourconceptwere: CoastSalishartistLawrencePaulYuxweluptun’santi-colonialworks(suchashisrecentexhibition“UncededTerritories”)inspireartworksthatchallengeanddeconstructscolonialnarratives.MarianneNicholson–aKwakwaka’wakwFirstNationsartist–usesvisualarttoreclaimlandscapesandspaces(suchas“HouseoftheGhosts”–aNorthwestCoastinspiredlonghousedesignthatwasprojectedontheVancouverartgallery–formerlythecourthousewhichhasimplementedcolonialrule). KenLumisChinese-Canadianartistandheinstalled“FourBoatsStranded:RedandYellow,BlackandWhite”in2001.FourdifferentboatsareinstalledontherooftopoftheVancouverArtGallery.ThereareFirstNationslongboats,CaptainGeorgeVancouver’sthreemastedsailship,theKomagateMaru,andacargoship

thatrecentlycarriedmigrantfromChina’sFujianProvincetoVancouver.Weareinterestedtolookatstoriesthateachshiphas. GuXiong’spaperboatcontainsdifferentaspectintheartworldinVancouver.GuXiongusesboatsinhiswork“waterscapes”,and“RedRiver”,andtheseboatsareculturallysignificantespeciallythosepeoplewho(im)migratedfromdifferentcountries.Sincewedecidedtocreatecanoeoutoffallentree,theprocessofthecreatingartworkismostlyfocusedontheprocessofcarving.CarvinghascloserelationshiptotheindigenouscultureinVancouver,andtheprocessofcarvingwoodisasimportantasphysicalformofartwork.
