Pioneering Digital Learning DaysSnow and ice kept La Salle Catholic College Prep students from attending classes in January, but it didn’t keep them from learning.

On four of the days the weather forced the La Salle campus to close, teachers went online to assign work for every class each student would have attended that day. The students had until afternoon or evening to complete and submit the assignments to Schoology, the school’s learning management system. Teachers answered questions via email.

“The core of this idea is to keep learning going for the students even when the weather does not allow us to be on campus,” said Principal Andy Kuffner. “We have all of these amazing digital tools at our fingertips and already integrated into our classes, why not leverage them in this way?”

Digital Learning Days are possible, said Kuffner, because of La Salle’s growing focus on digital learning to prepare students for college and work. The school’s 1:1 Mobile Learning Program requires every one of its 700 students to have an iPad to take notes, submit assignments and read e-textbooks. Students also take online classes on digital citizenship and rights and responsibilities, while teachers use technology to give students feedback and assess what they know.

Kuffner introduced Digital Learning Day after La Salle, like most schools in the Portland metro area, closed for several school days due to inclement weather this winter. If there are too many unscheduled closures, schools must add more instructional time to the school year.

After ice coated the area’s streets on Monday, January 9, La Salle held its first Digital Learning Day.

Students in Gary Hortsch’s religious studies class followed a prayer service at home. Students in Victoria McDonald’s English 1 class took a quiz on “To Kill a Mockingbird.” And, using an online forum, students in teacher Mike Doran’s economics class discussed a news article.

“I think it was a very effective way of learning,” said Connor Denning ‘17.

Several other Catholic schools were so intrigued at how La Salle kept classes rolling during the snowstorm that they launched their own Digital Learning Days.

Principal Kuffner said many parents appreciated the flexibility of its four Digital Learning Days. Not only did the digital lessons keep children off of unpredictable roads, they kept them thinking.

“It isn’t like students were sitting at home; they were engaged, they were learning,” he said. “That’s what we were going for.”

Educators Receive Award for Going the Extra Mile

Seth Altshuler and Aaron Hazel '99 have been awarded the Carol Feltz Bluhm ‘80 Award for their dedication to coaching and education.

Carol’s family (pictured above right) created the award to remember her – a standout student, athlete, and leader – while celebrating her admiration for teachers who also coach. The annual award goes to Lasallian educators who go above and beyond as they coach or moderate OSAA-sanctioned activities.

Coaches Hazel and Altshuler received their awards during halftime of a girls varsity basketball game in February. After receiving their awards, the coaches thanked Carol’s family and friends with notes and flowers.

Student Earns Highest Score Possible on PSATDerek Wong ‘18 earned the highest score possible – 1520 – on the PSAT/NMSQT last fall.

The test features 139 questions in reading, writing and math. Part of the College Board’s SAT Suite of Assessments, the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test measures students’ skill, knowledge, and readiness for college and work.

Derek’s score puts him in a select group. According to the College Board, only 2 of the 16,703 SAT-takers in Oregon’s class of 2016 earned the highest possible score on that test, which is similar to the PSAT. (The board doesn’t release how many students earn the highest possible score on the PSAT.)

“Derek is one of the most academically gifted students I have ever worked with,” said counselor Seth Altshuler. “He is also kind-hearted and community-oriented, which is why he has been such a great fit for La Salle.”

The son of Tammy and Wayne Wong of West Linn, Derek says he wants to be a physician because “I want to help people.”

Said like a true Lasallian.

How does your financial support drive La Salle’s mission?

• Through your partnership, La Salle is empowered to offer an aspirational, holistic and unique student experience.

• Your support speeds integration of new learning initiatives into curricular and co-curricular activities.

• Your partnership allows us to offer scholarship support to 56% of our students.

• Your investment bolsters our capacity to quickly adopt innovative programs to prepare students for successful lives.

• Your gifts build a strong, vibrant community that aspires to push the limits of each student’s potential.

Why do we ask for support often?

• Each family has its own best time to give. We invite partnership year-round so families can decide when it is best for them to make a gift.

• Knowing people want to align their passion for La Salle in different ways, we provide many opportunities to demonstrate partnership.

How does the Walkathon benefit students?

• The Walkathon is designed to ignite and foster our students’ grace for giving. It empowers students to help other students in a very significant way.

• Every family’s contribution advances La Salle’s core value of inclusion – bringing deserving students to La Salle, regardless of financial capacity.

• Alumni and businesses are invited to “walk with our students” by saying “YES!” when a student asks them for a Walkathon pledge.

How does giving to Every Family Counts reflect our community's values?

• Because through Every Family Counts (EFC), every student benefits, directly and indirectly.

• Your EFC gift celebrates the inclusion of many remarkable students that enrich your child’s life at La Salle: friends, teammates, castmates, fellow artists and musicians, study partners, lab partners, carpool buddies and many others. These relationships often last a lifetime.

• At La Salle, we join together to build and support our community. Every family’s contribution brings us closer to our goal of meeting the total financial need of all students.

Do volunteer and in-kind gifts help?

• Yes, without question! Your time and in-kind contributions save La Salle the expense of having to acquire these resources.

• Our students benefit greatly from wonderful experiences that would not be possible without the support and generosity of countless volunteers or in-kind donations.

• Volunteer service demonstrates to our students how much our community cares about them.

Most Common Myth“My smaller gift does not impact the student experience.” Not so!

A Foundation for TodayAnd TomorrowIncorporated in 1996, the La Salle Catholic College Preparatory Educational Foundation exists exclusively for the benefit of La Salle Prep. Its purpose is to ensure the financial sustainability and permanence of the mission to provide a Catholic college preparatory education to the young, especially the poor. A gift to the La Salle Educational Foundation ensures we can continue to aid those of limited financial means, provide a faith-based educational option to interested families and facilitate and foster the growth of our students’ God-given gifts for years to come.

Rather than be used for immediate needs, gifts to the Foundation are professionally invested. Earnings on these investments provide a permanent, renewable source of funding. The base of the Foundation continues to grow year after year, with distributions coming from the accrued interest of the funds rather than the corpus. The corpus of the fund will never be depleted. The total net assets in the La Salle Foundation as of December 31, 2016 were $3.86 million. The annual distribution from the Foundation for the 2015-16 school year was $114,719 with a growth rate of 111% in the past five years.

There are 33 active named funds and five developing named funds in the Foundation. In 2016, thanks to generous contributions from faithful supporters, six developing named funds became active funds resulting in their first distribution in support of the Lasallian mission. Furthermore, membership in the Legacy Society has grown by 60% to 41 members since the 2014-15 school year.

students. They tirelessly rise to the challenge of achieving excellence by honoring our Lasallian tradition and championing contemporary educational innovation. I am exceptionally proud of how our teachers create a holistic student experience that nourishes the unique gifts, talents and voices of the young people entrusted to our care. Thank you for joining me in honoring La Salle educators and the critical role they play in La Salle’s success. -Principal Andrew Kuffner

La Salle educators are called to "awaken in students a serious attitude in life and the conviction of the greatness of man’s destiny ... to dispose students to use their intelligence and their training in the service of others ... to teach them how to listen and to understand, to trust, and to love; it is apostolic to instill in students a sense of trustworthiness, brotherhood and justice.” - Declaration 41 from the 1967 General Chapter of the Christian Brothers

Students ConnectLa Salle hosted Northwest Connections in February, an annual gathering of students from De La Salle North Catholic, La Salle Yakima, and La Salle. Students joined together for faith, service, and community activities to promote our common Lasallian heritage. Activities included working at a clothes closet and greeting a newly arrived refugee family at the airport.

Artists Show Their Work Art students represented La Salle in the NWOC Art Festival in March. Elise Nebels ‘17 took 3rd place in the Mixed Media 2-D category; Ana Martinez ‘19 took 2nd in the Pen & Ink/ Markers category; and Isabella Griffiths ‘19 won the Teachers’ Selection for the Best of Show Ribbon in Pencil/Drawing.

Model Congress Plays PoliticsThe 32nd annual Harvard Model Congress in Boston saw an impressive delegation from La Salle. La Salle’s 22 students created legislation, argued Supreme Court cases, re-created the Constitutional Convention, and managed the rise of Slobodan Milosevic and a handful of other scenarios. In addition, students had the chance to meet Lasallian students from Greece and climbed the Bunker Hill monument, all 294 steps!

Students Journey to EnglandDuring spring break, 17 La Salle students and teachers Elizabeth Elliott and Victoria McDonald ventured to Great Britain. Beginning in Manchester, they travelled to the Lake District, Yorkshire, Stratford, and Bath to see the birthplaces of and inspirations for works by many authors including Austen, Wordsworth, Shakespeare, the Brontes, along with many other historical sites including Oxford. Their travels ended in London with a tour of the Globe Theater, an acting workshop, a play and many historical, literary, and popular culture sights. Cheerio!

Four Seniors Named National Merit FinalistsLa Salle seniors William Adriance, Corwyn Bradeen, Matthew Kerr, and Kevin Nguyen have advanced as finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program competition.

The four, who were among the 16,000 semifinalists named in September 2016, met all requirements to be considered for National Merit Scholarships in 2017. The National Merit Scholarship Program, which started in 1955, is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary

SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which screens approximately 1.6 million entrants each year.

Chris Krantz. Cheryl Healy. Brian Devine.

Kendra Toole had a lot of great teachers at La Salle, but what these three teachers taught her changed her life, she says.

“Mr. Krantz taught me to think critically about the books we were reading. Ms. Healy’s class opened my eyes to current affairs. And Mr. Devine’s class taught me how to go outside our four walls to help people.”

Those lessons inspired Toole to take action when she heard about the struggles in Uganda. After hearing about the East African nation in one of her classes, she saved money to go to Uganda on a mission trip the summer before she left for Boston University.

“I really just wanted to go and see it for myself and understand what was happening,” she said.

She fell in love with the Ugandan culture, people and children. They stayed on her mind so much that she returned to Uganda every summer while she was in college, working four jobs to pay her bills as well as those of two schoolchildren there.

Over time, Toole realized that many Ugandan children lived in orphanages because their parents couldn’t afford to raise them at home. Believing that children belong with their parents, she is creating a non-governmental organization that will employ Ugandan adults to make greeting cards from fallen bamatooke (banana) leaves. “By employing parents,” she said. “We can probably in the long run keep kids out of orphanages.”

Toole said she gives so much because others gave to her when she was in school. “I see aid as a moving circle,” she said. “Someone gets a hand up, and once they get up, they give a hand up.”

What are you doing now professionally?I work as a systems engineer at Blue Origin, a private space company owned by Jeff Bezos, the owner of Amazon. I support a vehicle called New Shepard, a re-usable, sub-orbital, manned rocket. Day-to-day, I support activities that will lead our operations to be faster and more efficient to support regular trips to space for tourists on our New Shepard rocket.

What challenges did you overcome to get here?At the time, there were no schools in Oregon that offered aerospace engineering, and I had to look at schools based on which would give me the best financial aid. This led me to Boston University - all the way across the country from friends and family. I was able to get three years paid for through scholarships and financial aid. Boston was a totally foreign environment.

In my program, we started out as about 40 students of which four were girls. By junior year, there were two women remaining in our class of 31. I worked on campus to pay for my room, board, textbooks and other needs. Flying home was not normally affordable, so I chose one or maybe two times a year to come back. What is your ultimate career goal? I want to go to space. Typically, people think that is a NASA astronaut who might fly to the moon or Mars, but with the increase in private space industry development, it could mean many things. There are a number of companies working to make us a space-faring society, and I plan to be on the forefront of that.

How did La Salle help you get where you are today?Through study abroad, I spent time in Germany learning about a different culture and learning to acclimate in a new environment. This was helpful when I went to college and nothing was familiar. Through student council, I spent time

planning events and activities which gave me strong leadership and also time-management and organizational skills.

Sports (swim team, volleyball, softball, track and field) taught me the value of working together with a team which proved to be beneficial in countless technical team challenges we faced in school.

Most importantly, the concept of “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve” reminded me that I am not going out into the world only to make something of myself, but also to make something better of the world with the opportunities I have been given. That is ingrained in many aspects of La Salle: compassion and social justice and concern for the world around us.

What advice would you give La Salle students about pursuing their dreams?Make big dreams that are so big they seem unobtainable, then ride the path one step at a time and see what life brings you. Don't be afraid to make sacrifices or stand out from the crowd, and don't forget where you come from and why we are here. Our dreams should not just be our own, but impact the bigger community.
