Annual Review 2012-2013

La Quinta Arts Foundation (LQAF): A nonprofit 501(c)3

charitable organization founded in 1982 dedicated to its

mission: Promoting and Cultivating the Arts.

This mission is accomplished by producing nationally

acclaimed visual and performing art events, forming

meaningful community partnerships, and providing cultur-

al, education and personal growth outreach opportunities

to students, artists, residents and visitors to La Quinta

and beyond.

Promoting and Cultivating the Arts is more than a

mission statement for La Quinta Arts Foundation — it is our

promise to the community we have proudly served for

over three decades.

2 La Quinta Arts Foundation - Annual Report 2012 - 2013

Thank You,

LQAF Supporters

For Making 2012/2013

Another Perfect Season!

La Quinta Arts Foundation’s 31st season concluded as the most

successful in our history – easily deposing the previous record

breaking achievements of 2011/12:

• La Quinta Arts Festival was officially ranked as the #1 Fine Art Festival in the Nation (Greg Lawler’s Art Fair SourceBook). La Quinta Arts Festival 2013 set another all-time record for art sales.

• Art Under the Umbrellas sustained its phenomenal success by breaking attendance and art sales records for this series of one day events.

• La Quinta Blues & Blues drew over 1,800 enthusiastic blues music and craft beer devotees.

• LQAF Visual Art Scholarship Awards reached a total of $1,040,002 to local students pursuing college degrees in the arts.

• Over 500 elementary school students received LQAF’s free six week art education program.

La Quinta Arts Foundation’s cultural activities continue to be a

crucial economic driver for La Quinta and neighboring cities. In

addition to art purchases totaling over $3.5 million at

La Quinta Arts Festival and Art Under the Umbrellas in

2012/13, attendees patronized local hotels, restaurants, retail

establishments, grocery stores and gas stations during each

visit. Coachella Valley Economic Partnership (CVEP) President

and Thomas Flavin has proclaimed La Quinta Arts Festival as

“one of the bedrocks of the local economy” in The Desert Sun

Valley Voice, February 10, 2013.

La Quinta Arts Festival’s ranking as the premier arts festival in

the nation, plus the unprecedented success of all LQAF events

and outreach programs places LQAF in the forefront of the

Coachella Valley’s arts and creative industry, which is so vital to

this region.

Key findings from the 2012 study of the California Desert’s

Creative Economy undertaken by CVEP and the Arts Oasis

revealed that nearly one out of every five persons working

in the Coachella Valley is working in the arts and creative

economy, producing a raw impact of almost $1 billion per year

– 7.8% of all private sector employment. And LQAF’s

annual outlay in arts education funding should be viewed as

a tangible investment towards ensuring the future of our arts

community and economy.

With gratitude for support from our members, volunteers,

sponsors, artists, local business, civic and charitable organiza-

tions — above all the City of La Quinta — I present the

La Quinta Arts Foundation Annual Review 2012/13.

Consistently providing livelihood and recognition opportunities for artists is a significant part of LQAF’s mission focus. To that end, La Quinta Arts Festival continually strives to evolve and offer its exhibitors ultimate amenities and opportunities to best showcase their original works of art to a demographi-cally preferred audience on what is widely known as the most spectacular art festival site in the country.

The high caliber of La Quinta Arts Festival artists is guaranteed through one of the most progressive jury systems used today employing the on-line artist application and jury system Zapplication (ZAPP®), and a panel of 45 highly qualified experts with specific knowledge of the art medium they are judging.

To complement the cultural experience for patrons beyond the artworks on display, La Quinta Arts Festival 2013 offered a full lineup of daily entertainment on the amphitheatre and grounds that included Milton Merlos on Flamenco Guitar, Steve Madaio & Friends jazz and standards, Karamanta Music’s Boliv-ian Pan Pipes, Bill Kaele’s Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, and Don McLeod’s Statues Vivantes. Restaurant Row provided upscale restaurant fare from Ruth’s Chris and Fisherman’s Market & Grill.

Art in Public PlacesThe City of La Quinta Civic Purchase Committee chose Mark Stephenson’s “golden cattails” photographic piece to join 40 artworks previously procured. La Quinta Arts Festival serves as a viable APP resource to cities and developers, along with LQAF’s online Artist Registry.

Four Featured Festival ArtistsPhotographer Mark Stephenson - Stephenson’s “Golden Cat-tails” nine-panel photographic piece was selected as the image for La Quinta Arts Festival’s 2013 Commemorative Poster. Painter Stacy Dynan – Dynan’s whimsical characters were used to promote the Festival’s theme of “All Roads Lead to La Quinta Arts Festival.”ceramicists Scott & Naomi Schoenherr – The Schoenherr’s “Little Red Corvette” image adorned the back of the men’s commemorative t-shirt. Mixed Media Sculptor Kathy Ross – Kathy’s “Travel Bug” figure was the initial inspiration for the “All Roads Lead to La Quinta Arts Festival” theme. The piece was offered as a prize on Facebook as a marketing incentive leading up to the festival.

Artist Awards ReceptionHosted by LQAF board and staff members, Festival 2013’s opening night reception was attended by over 500 invited guests on the Civic Center Amphitheatre lawn from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Along with the Festival artists, special invitees to the Awards Reception were LQAF Friends and Patron Mem-bers, Home Hosts, Corporate Sponsors, Community Partners, and dignitaries from the City of La Quinta, Premier Sponsor for all LQAF events. The reception was catered by donations from 12 Featured Festival Restaurants and Festival sponsors. In addition to the artist awards, La Quinta Arts Festival was acknowledged with proclamations from The State of California Legislature Assembly and the County of Riverside Board of Supervisors for achieving its #1 national ranking.

LA QUINTA ARTS FESTIvAL MARKETINg

LQAF’s extensive marketing campaign continues to be effec-tive in reaching new audiences and incentivizing participation.

New Mobile WebsiteTo further enhance the visitor experience, LQAF launched a newly created mobile website for La Quinta Arts Festival 2013 on March 6th. It was tailored to Smartphones and Tablets, although accessible from any mobile or standard browser. The website was designed by VeloMedia offering access to purchasing tickets, plus information on location and hours, directions and parking, a Festival site map, entertainment schedule, art media categories with artist locations, food and drink locations with menus, and more.

Digital Presence and On-line AdvertisingLa Quinta Arts Festival’s Facebook & Desert Sun digital advertising campaigns yielded 12,090,697 impressions, 8,953 clicks, and 1,935 page likes. Significant increased blog content on LQAF.com and Facebook resulted in three times the number of followers from the previous year. LQAF’s Google page rank is a solid “4” while most websites fall within the 0-3 ranking. LQAF.com page load time is 1.70 seconds rating a B in page speed grade.

Banner and Signage ProgramLQAF’s banner and sign program reached every corner of La Quinta and beyond: 100 intersection pole banners, 100

banners in the Village area, 28 ban-ners in Old Town La Quinta, 48 banners on the Civic Center Campus, and 8 large scale image signs touting our #1 national ranking. New this year, a lighted billboard was placed on Dinah Shore Drive January through March and another inside the baggage claim area at Palm Springs Airport Terminal the middle of February through March. The 62” x 43” airport diorama proved particularly popular as over 263,000 fliers filed through the airport during this time period.

Print & Broadcast AdvertisingA comprehensive broadcast advertising program for LQAF events included over 1,363 .30 radio spots on 11 radio stations, equating to over 400 hours of paid broadcast time. All spots were matched with complimentary mentions and PSA’s.LQAF purchased 6 stations with 475 .30 television advertise-ments. All stations also ran LQAF’s .30 PSA at double the paid advertising rate.

The 2013 Festival patron survey confirmed The Desert Sun as an optimal communication vehicle for LQAF’s local patronage. A strong campaign in the daily broadsheet, as well as weekend and magazine publications was undertaken, plus significant size ads in the BNP tournament daily pairings sheets. LQAF had a remarkable presence, with both paid and complimen-tary advertising and editorial coverage in various publications, some mentioned below.

• Greg Lawler’s Art Fair SourceBook ranked La Quinta Arts Festival #1 Fine Art Festival in the Nation while proclaim -ing La Quinta Civic Center Campus “The most stunning festival site in the country.” • La Quinta was prominently featured in September 2012 issue of Sunshine Artist “Top 10 of the Top 200.” • Southwest Art Magazine proclaimed La Quinta Arts Festival “A must see festival in the Western US” providing a listing and write up under its West Coast Art Events section, and a complimentary full page ad for the festival and half page ad for the LQAF Best of Show artist. • Desert Charities News ran a full page color feature on La Quinta Arts Festival’s #1 ranking in the January/ February/March 2013 issue.• CV Weekly gave La Quinta Arts Festival a full color cover, plus full page editorial in the February 28 – March 6, 2013 issue.• Canada South magazine ran a two-page full color editorial in their March 2013 issue titled “All roads lead to La Quinta for ‘best in the nation’ Arts Festival.”• Palm Spring Life chose La Quinta Arts Festival as a “Hot Picks” in the March 2013 Desert Guide, citing it as “The Toast of the Art World.”• Travel Host ran a full column feature to accompany our ad in the February/March 2013 issue. • Westways listed La Quinta Arts Festival in their Current Events section for Inland Empire & the Desert in the March/April 2013 edition. • The Desert Entertainer and The Public Record each printed several editorial pieces in their weekly publications.• The Desert Sun featured La Quinta Arts Festival on its Weekend “Hot Picks” page with a 3 column color photo editorial on Friday, March 8, 2013.• Footage and interviews taken at the 2010 La Quinta Arts Festival was replayed on The Tennis Channel network during the BNP Paribas open.

LQAF Means Business: By fulfilling our nonprofit mission LQAF is supporting our partners, bringing customers to local busi-nesses, supporting artists, and generating interest in the arts.

Season Opener Mixer - October 24, 2012LQAF invited its members and volunteers to the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce Opening Season Mixer at the Bank of Southern California. Eleven Art Under the Umbrella artists set up displays in the bank lobby. The event was co-sponsored by the Bank of Southern California and catered by Jensen’s Fine Foods. The participating artists were: Leslee Adams, Bart Aldrich, Sarah Anderson, Chad Allen & Garrison Wayne, Kathy Caldwell, Elaine Matthews, Diane McClary, Elliott Newton, Jan-ice Osborne, Ken & Linda Shrimplin, and Lauren Youngs.

Art Under the UmbrellasOctober 27, November 10, November 24, and December 1, 2012; and January 12, Janu-ary 19, February 9, February 16, March 23, 2013

This increasingly popular series of six-hour Saturday events held along the streets and lawn of Old Town La Quinta grew from eight to nine shows during 2012/13. Art Under the Um-brellas again proved to be an unprecedented success story on

every level. It has become a much anticipated day-trip destina-tion for many of its devotees coming in from all over Southern California. These free public events that feature 70-80 artists, live music, and art demonstrations were attended by at least 22,500 patrons — a conservative estimate based on 2,500 per event. All parking lots in the Village area were routinely filled to capacity, and Old Town’s shops and restaurants gained significant increase in traffic. Total art sales of 140 exhibiting artists soared to over $750,000 – a 16% increase over the previous year.

Art Under the Umbrellas patronage is also a proven factor in spurring attendance at La Quinta Arts Festival. Data in the 2013 Festival patron survey shows that 40.6% of Festival attendees had previously attended Art Under the Umbrellas.

LQAF’s commitment to support and promote artists has re-sulted in the exceptional reputation of this show among artists — made evident in the long wait lists in place for each event.

La Quinta Blues & Brews - November 17, 2012The sixth annual all day music festival was staged on La Quinta’s Civic Center Campus featuring three premier Southern California Bands: Ray Goren & The Generation Blues Experience, Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers, and Teresa James & The Rhythm Tramps. Ray Goren is a twelve year old guitar

and piano prodigy with an “old soul” keeping the roots music art form forefront of mind to the amazed and appreciative audience. Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers and Teresa James & The Rhythm Tramps are chart top-ping blues performers who equally delighted the crowd.

Over 30 microbrew and artisan beers were offered, along with res-taurant fare by Fisherman’s Market & Grill and West Coast Hof Brau. Free lawn games included bocce ball, ladder golf, and bean bag toss. An admission fee of $20.00 was charged at the gate. Tickets purchased online were discounted to $15, as were those with a direct mail card in hand which was sent to all households in La Quinta. Attendance totaled over 1,800 – Paid 1,572; Guests and Dignitaries 309.

La Quinta Pillars ofthe CommunityAward CeremonyDecember 18, 2012LQAF Executive Director Christi Salamone, La Quinta’s first mayor and LQAF Founder Fred Wolff, and La Quinta Chamber of Commerce volunteer Ann Kosich were

named recipients of the City’s 2012 Pillars of the Community award. Created in 2002, the award recognizes those residents whose lives have had a significance and contribution to La Quinta. The recipients were publically honored and presented with plaques by Mayor Don Adolph and City Council Members at a ceremony held at City Hall. LQAF Board Member Emeritus Kay Wolff accepted on behalf of her late husband.

Art, Your Passport to Fashion January 20, 2013LQAF joined with Chico’s and Soma on El Paseo to present a preview of La Quinta Arts Festival 2013 to over 700 consumers by exhibiting artwork by Diane McClary, Joanne Casey, Elliott Newton, Bart Aldrich, Jerry Caruso, Nick Foschi, Hannie Goldgewicht andRebecca Molayem.
