A natural heritage to be discovered

Bonne Anse Bay

This natural bay formed by the wind and the currents through the centuries still shelters some oyster

beds. Emblem of our seaside resort, this bay is perfect to practice all water sports in a safe environment. Nature lovers will also be able to get close-up views on migrating bird populations in an attractive setting.

Fine Sand Beaches

• La Palmyre Beach : located near the town centre and the port, with an access ramp for disabled people and certified ‘Tourisme & Handicap’ (disabled-friendly).

• Bonne Anse Bay : ideal at high tide to practice water sports.

• Les Pins de Cordouan : beautiful fine sand beach skirted by a dune and pine trees, with a tiralo (beach wheelchair for disabled) available upon request at the lifeguard station.

• Phare de la Coubre Beach : beach located at foot of the lighthouse where begins La Côte Sauvage (wild coast) - 20km long fine sand beach - perfect to go surfing.

• The naturist zones : La Grande Côte and La Côte Sauvage beaches. On la Grande Côte, 800m long naturist beach between La Lède and Les Combots. Access by D25 and cycling path, from track 12 ‘La Lède’ to track 15 ‘Les Combots’. Naturism is forbidden on dunes and in the forest.

La Coubre and Les Combots Forests

The town Les Mathes-La Palmyre is surrounded by Les Combots and La Coubre national forests : a total of 8000 hectares of pines and evergreen oaks. Planted in the 19th century to stop sand from

coming in La Presqu’île d’Arvert, this forest hides some buried villages from another time and some blockhaus, last relics of the Second World War. Lots of cycling paths, signposted riding, and walking tracks allow you to discover it safely all year round.

35km of asphalted cycling paths built on the former tram of ‘Eaux et Forêt’ join the neighbouring municipalities of La Tremblade and Saint-Palais-sur-Mer. These cycling routes are a part of French Velodyssey® that stretches, in Charente-Maritime, from Charron to Royan. A cycling map is available at our Tourist Office which has the labels ‘Accueil Vélo’ and ‘Vélodyssée®’.

The Hippodrome

La Palmyre Hippodrome is known as one of the most beautiful French grass track. Flat,

trot and steeplechase horse races are organised there, from April to September. The race meetings programme published by ‘La Nouvelle Société des Courses du Pays Royannais’ is available at the Tourist Office. Entrance fee : 5.50€. Enquiries : +33 5 46 22 46 17.

Great walks through La Palmyre

After visiting the zoo, do not miss the opportunity to discover the family resort : La Palmyre town centre, its shops and restaurants, and the outdoor markets on Wednesday and Sunday

morning from April to September (cf. p.19).

On the way to the beach, you will see a couple of typical villas : a curious villa built by Le Corbusier called ‘le Sextant’ or ‘la villa Russe’ with its blue shutters. When you arrive at Square de l’Océan, you can go walking or cycling along the embankment skirted by a large beach and by Bonne Anse Bay. Offshore, you will get a glimpse of the majestic Cordouan Lighthouse.

From the town centre, you can also choose to go to the port and the nautical centre. You can picnic at the edge of the bay, under the pine trees, before getting back to the cycling path that will lead you to La Coubre forest.

The most courageous will climb the 300 steps of La Coubre Lighthouse where, from its 64m high, you will have a stunning view on La Côte Sauvage and on the wonderful Bonne Anse Bay.

La Palmyre Zoo

Along the shaded paths that snake through 18 hectares of pine trees, you will discover

more than 140 species in an environment fitted to their specific biology. Each year, the zoo reaches a record rate of births : almost 300 last year! It also plays an important role to safeguard endangered animals. It takes part in European breeding programmes, reintroduction of animals in their natural environment and finances several programmes dedicated to the conservation of species into the wild.
