LETTER FROM THE EDITORHappy Holidays everyone!

I hope you are having a wonderful and cozy season. Thank you so much for all your submissions! It is inspiring that so many artists, designers, and photographers are willing to be a part of the LA DE DA project. We have an amazing group of contributors for this winter issue of LA DE DA Magazine. This time we went international, including photographers from Milan, Italy, Ramat Gan, Israel, as well as all over the US, including New York City, Los Angeles, Jacksonville, Tampa, and Charlotte, NC. The editorials range from refined and elegant, to vintage and mysterious, to warm and relaxed, and even to dark and unsettling. Our featured designer, fresh on the scene, hails from New York City and has an optimistic and entrepreneurial spirit. Her collection embodies a sense of new beginnings with a darker moodier approach. There is also insight into an upscale consignment boutique from Fernandina Beach, FL, owned by two creative sisters. Our featured artist is a well-traveled inspiring gal who is both an author and artist. She happens to also model and act, but that is a whole other story. She is currently promoting her new book, Sleepwalk to the Face, an epic narrative poem. We hope you are creatively invigorated

and enjoy this winter issue of LA DE DA Magazine.

LA DE DA: Who is Courtney Barriger and why is she a writer?Courtney: For as long as I can remember I have been as curious as I have been expressive. What makes life fulfilling to me is to be equally involved in discovery and learning, as in giving and creating. Growing up, I had a reputation for reading constantly. I could walk down a flight of stairs with my nose in a book without trouble. Naturally, that gave way to storytell-ing. From age ten, writing short stories and short films was the norm for me, but finishing a book wouldn't happen until my twenties. My first novel, "NightBook Short Story Anthology," was written in college and published when I was 23. It was the first story I visualized in its entirety, so I felt it was time for me to start giving back some of the things I have learned.

What should we know about your writing style? Why should we read your work? There are countless ways to tell a story. And when a writer chooses their route, there is always a direction in mind. My novels−the children's book excluded−are set in fantasy, and I labored to write in a style that would engulf the reader in its environment: descriptions are bold, and emotions run high. In "Sleepwalk to The Face," an epic narrative poem, the story is set in a dream. And just like a dream, the setting is bright, and the characters are volatile. My writing is simple in structure, but complex in meaning. Most readers say they feel that they are one with the characters, as they journey through their adventures.

What is your favorite part about conceptualiz-ing a story?Conceptualization comes in pieces. For me, ideas form when I am hiking Griffith Park, or riding my bike through Silverlake. The best moments come like a flash in the dark. All of a sudden, the perfect scenario forms, and all I want to do is stop and start writing. From there on, it is filling in the pieces that make that scenario come to life and become a story. Most of the filling comes from research and many hours of playing in the imagination. By far, my favorite part is when I know I have found a story that hasn't been told.

What matters to you most as an author?Originality and unpredictability. One of the reasons I chose to write a short story anthology and an epic narrative poem was to stray from predictive writing. It is very difficult to get away from the three act structure of story telling. In short, it leaves the audience with a sense of incompleteness. But the style of delivery can change a story. However, my next book will be a novel in true form only because it is wholly original content based on a true story.

Most importantly, I love to tell stories that touch the heart and make us feel human. What makes us feel more alive than falling in love for the first time, or walking through the last night of a person's life? My stories are always adventure stories because I want to reach my audience and remind us to take chances and never let a moment slip you by.

Why do you use your own art in your novels, and how does this affect the reader's experi-ence?I illustrate my own novels because I simply cannot help but draw out what I imagine. If you have the tools, you use them. It also makes for a great visual aid for my readers to see the fantasy as I do.

What is the best way to get into the zone when writing, painting, or drawing? In silence, thoughts are clearer. When writing, I find a quiet place with minimal distraction. And if that isn't working for me I play songs that compliment the feel I am going for. Music without lyrics creates a perfect mood for both writing and painting.

Where do you get your inspiration?Inspiration comes from everything. And the more open you are to novel experiences, the deeper the well goes. I love listening to stories from strangers, and exploring places I have never been. The trick is to write it all down soon after it happens, prefer-ably in personal journals. Then the new never goes

away, it becomes a part of who you are.

Who are your favorite writers and artists? My favorite writers are J.R.R Tolkien, James Joyce, J.K. Rowling, and Krishnamurti. My favorite painters are Alex Grey and John Singer Sargent.

Can you tell us about your newest project?"Sleepwalk to The Face" is my second novel, and my first published book of poetry. It follows one night in the life of an elderly man who becomes young again in a lucid dream sleepwalking episode. In his day, he never journeyed further than his home town except through books. His sleepwalk gives him the chance to do the things he had given up on, like experiencing India and wooing the woman of his dreams. In conceptualizing the book, I wanted to explore regret and the significance of fantasy for someone who has lived a long life. So much of literary fiction focuses on youth and writ of passage and so little on retrospect and the finality of aging. It was intriguing to seek out my questions and play with poetry in this new way. I hope that readers will come to think of living in fantasy as both tragic and satisfying.

Any advice for aspiring authors and artists?Stay hungry, stay foolish. Never stop. And always believe in yourself.

Thank you Courtney for sharing so much about your passions!

LA DE DA: Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from and what got you started in design?Melanie: I’m from New York! Born and raised. I grew up with two sisters, so fashion and makeup were kind of forced upon me! But I also went to school for it. I attended Fashion Industries High School, where I learned how to make patterns, drape, and sew. I made a complete wedding dress when I was just 16 years old. At that moment I knew this was something I was good at, and wanted to continue! How would you define your personal style? My personal style goes hand in hand with my individuality. I wear what I want and I don’t really follow trends. I wear white after Labor Day, and I’ve never had ombré hair. But my main focus is to stand out. I love oversized scarves, dark nail polish in the summer, and literally wear leather all year around. My number one rule when styling myself is not to the follow the rules. What's your favorite part about conceptualizing a design? My favorite part about conceptualizing a design is the fact that whatever I say goes! I make up the rules; I decide what goes where, what color to use, how many inches to cut, etc. And in the end, the garment that you can physically touch is a prod-uct of everything I know, love, admire and what inspires me. What matters to you most as a fashion designer? The one thing that matters to me most, as a fashion designer, is my image. I want to always maintain a professional, admirable image. And as for Milané Noir, I want to portray nothing but high end luxury.

Emerging New York designer Melanie Rodriguez is all about individual style. She shares her process, inspirations, and what makes her Milané Noir designs unique.

FEATURED DESIGNER

Photography by Chris Levy

How do you prepare for a fashion shoot or shows? Do you have any special rituals? Shoots are my favorite! Shows−not so much. For shoots, I always prepare the looks the day before. My favorite part has to be looking for makeup and hair concepts. The day of [the shoot], I’m up super early, getting breakfast, calling cabs, you name it. During, I prep my models with what I’m looking to portray, and then, BAM! The magic happens.

Shows are literally hectic and crazy! There’s a bunch of chaos backstage: models running around, hair and make-up being done, and at the same time everyone manages to scarf down their food. It is a fun and stressful process, but the outcome is always amazing! How would you define the style your line exemplifies? Just like my personal objective is to stand out, I think of the same thing when designing for Milané Noir. I design statement pieces! Anyone can design a dress, but I make sure to add an element of surprise to my designs. Whether that is using real snakeskin, adding some sheer here, or some embroidery there, there is always something to make you say, “Wow!” A prominent design in a lot of my looks is drapery. I love how drap-ery coincides with the female body.

I go for beautiful colors; I focus on details, and try my best to add something different to each piece. I want anyone wearing Milané Noir to feel all eyes on her when she enters a room, and to know that what she is wearing is truly one of a kind, just like her. Where do you get your inspiration?Inspiration comes in all forms!

I usually focus on colors, and specific eras in time. I am completely fascinated with Egyptian culture and modern art. Sometimes things completely unrelated to fashion inspire me too, like the sky for example. I think it is the most relaxing view, and along with look-ing at the amazing colors and shapes, it also gives you a chance to relax your mind and think. If something intrigues you even the slightest, you are already inspired. Who are some of your favorite designers? This question is so hard for me to answer! I have so many, but some I follow because of their aesthetic, oth-ers because of their story. My top 5 have to be: Naeem Khan, Zuhair Murad, Zac Posen, Jason Wu, and Reem Acra. They each have such an amazing view on fashion and elegance. What advice do you have for aspiring fashion designers? The one thing I always say to anyone looking to follow their dream is, if you want it you have to put 150% into

it! Invest fully in yourself, and work hard. Be better than who you were before, learn from your mistakes, and grow. There is always going to be someone in competition with you, but the one thing to remember is the only competition you have is yourself. Thank you Melanie for sharing with us! Shopping Consignment!

Page 105: LA DE DA Magazine Winter 2013 Issue

If you’ve never shopped consignment, surely you have questions. Why should you shop resale or consignment? How do you shop in a non-traditional store? How do you sell stuff just sitting in your clos-et taking up space? Why are resale and consignment shops so popular now? We can answer all your questions!

WHY SHOP CONSIGNMENT OR RESALE?It’s Awesome!Everybody loves a bargain. When shop-ping resale, you can score major deals: most deals are 60%-70% off regular retail. Just last month, our shop Retail Therapy Consignment sold a multicolored Lou-is Vuitton Alma bag that retailed for over $1200 for only $600! This equals a happy buyer for getting a bargain and a happy seller for getting fast cash for something that was just taking up space in her clos-et! Ladies, there is just no greater feeling in the world than finding a coveted designer piece, your favorite name brand, or being able to get a new handbag when you’re tired of your old one. At the same time, you’ll even have extra cash to make those purchases!

Supply & DemandSince the economy has tanked, people are looking for cash anywhere. Consumers are not clinging to their high-end goods like before. They are looking for an outlet to sell their gently loved items, get a fair price for them, and also purchase like new items at a fraction of the original cost. This equals lots of supply and demand for stores like Retail Therapy Consignment. Our store has over 1500 established consignors and that number grows daily. We purchase items every day through our Buy Out Right program as well.

Quality and QuantityBy shopping resale you will be able to afford and find higher quality items that if you were just shopping at the local mall. We have names like Chanel, Fendi, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, St. Johns Knits, Diane Von Furstenberg, Trina Turk, Ella Moss, Lilly Pulitzer, Kate Spade, Coach, Dooney & Bourke, Cole Haan, and the list goes on! At resale prices you will also be able to purchase more pieces. HOW TO SHOP?Shop FrequentlyAt Retail Therapy Consignment we have incoming merchandise everyday. We process and put on the floor on average 500 to 1000 pieces every week. We recommend

you stop by once a week to make sure you see all the latest and greatest deals.
