THE TRAINING OFCHRIST'S DISCIPLESPART 1Hve you ever played on a basketball orvolleyball team? I f so, you may wellremember the many hours you spentpracticing. I f you had a coach, he taught youthe plans and strategies your team would use inorder to play its best! He showed you how toplay a winning game, and had you practicemany times until you could perform each movecorrectly. Your coach may also have emphasized the importance of having the rightattitude so that your team would truly functionas a cooperative unit.

CHRIST EDUCATES HIS "TEAM"Jesus Christ is the coach of His "Team"the members who make up His Church. Hegives them a plan to follow so that they can

succeed in fulfilling their purpose for livingbecoming members of the God Family! Christeducates His people in the basics of that planand drills them constantly. He teaches throughHis words in the Bible the attitudes and actionswhich will help them to become victors in thislife, and in the life to come.During his human existence on earth,Christ's initial team consisted of the originaltwelve apostles. He personally taught them the

principles of God's purpose and plan formankind-what we might call the "game oflife." After Christ's death and resurrection, Heinspired these men to write down the rules ofABOUT OUR COVER . . .The Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. It was here thatChrist taught His disciples many principles of Christianliving.

the game, and the strategies for playing itTheir writings became a part of what we todaycall the Holy Bible. This assured that newmembers would also be trained by Christ.God's Church today is made up of Hispresent-day disciples who are members ofChrist's team. As members or future membersof that team, it is important for them tounderstand and apply the rules, strategies andlaws which the Coach, Jesus Christ, gavethrough the older teammates, the apostles andprophets. With this in mind, let us nowcontinue our study of what Christ taught Hisdisciples in the famous "Sermon on theMount."CHRIST MAGNIFIES THE LAW

Christ explained in Matthew 5:3-12 how thedisciples, members of His Church and theirchildren must conduct themselves in order tobe blessed. He emphasized in verses 13-16 thawe are to set the right example by our actions.Like a light on a distant hill, our goodexamples will lead others to see that God's wayproduces good results.Read Matthew 5:17 and then fill in thefollowing blanks. "Think not that I am come todestroy the , or the_______ : I am come to_____ , but to ." Chrisknew that His Team must know and play bythe rules in order to succeed. He did nodispose of the rules. Read Matthew 5:18-26 and especially noticethe instruction Christ gave His disciples inverse 20. "For I say unto you, Thatshall the righteousness of the_____ and , ye shallIn case into the_______ of heaven." Jesus empha-sized to His disciples that they would have toobey His laws before they could be born intothe Family of God. Christ then explained thattrue Christians are to obey the "spirit of thelaw," in addition to the "letter of the law." Thescribes and Pharisees were very careful to keepthe letter of the law. But they neglected, oromitted, the spirit or intent of the law-itsspiritual application in their lives! (Matthew23:23.)To show what He meant, Jesus reminded thedisciples that the sixth commandment forbadethem to commit murder. Even the Pharisees bytheir own human effort might keep themselvesfrom doing that! But Christ said obedience to thiscommandment in its spiritual intent was

Hatred is an attitude which can oftelead to the action of murder, given the rigcircumstances. One who has such an attitudea murderer in God's sight! (I John 3:15Christ's disciples, with the help of God's Spirwere to keep the spirit and intent of the lawTo further illustrate the point, Chrireferred to the seventh commandment forbiding adultery. We obey this command in tletter of the law by not committing the actadultery. Christ said in Matthew 5:27-28 thlusting after another person's spouse, evthinking about adultery, was in effect breakithe seventh commandment. Thought eventualleads to action (James 1:14-15).Christ set these high standards for Hdisciples even though they did not have GodHoly Spirit yet. He later told them that t"Spirit of truth," the Holy Spirit, was withem and later would be in them (Joh14:17).Jesus Christ expects us to "play by the rulof the game," both literally and accordingthe intent. A PATTERN FOR PRAYERNotice the pattern for prayer which Christgave His disciples. Write Matthew 6, verses

And that isexactly how we get to know God the Father!We talk to Him through prayer, and He talksto us through His written Word, the Bible.Little wonder that Jesus next spoke aboutthe subject of prayer. Before giving Hisdisciples a pattern for their prayers, He gavetwo general instructions about how to pray.Read Matthew 6:5-8, and complete verses 6and 7. "But thou, [not "if ']

_____ , as the heathen do: for theythink that they shall be heard for their muchspeaking."We should not pray just so others will seeand hear us and be impressed by our"righteousness." That's what hypocrites do-epeople who want others to think they aresomething which they really are not. Rather,we should be praying because we really wantto talk to God. And that is done best inprivate!Jesus admonished His disciples not to use"vain repetitions" in their prayers. Vainrepetitions are words or phrases said over andover again. They become "fillers" in ourprayers and prevent us from having meaningfulconversation with God. God is more interestedin the quality of our prayers than in thequantity of words in them. In other words, Godwants us to pray from the heart.

What is commonly called the "LordPrayer" is merely Jesus' way of showing uimportant concepts to incorporate in our dailprayers. Let 's examine Jesus' sample prayer idetail so we will understand it fully. We shoulbegin our prayers by acknowledging that Gois our Father. In so doing, we understand thawe are His children and have the potential tultimately become part of His universe-rulinFamily. We should thank God for that preciouknowledge and for the awesome potential obecoming immortal spirit beings. We shoulalso ask God to help us achieve thapotential-to one day become perfect icharacter as He is!We are to "hallow" (set apart as holy) thname of God by keeping the third commandment. We hallow His name by not cursingswearing or using it in a vainly repetitioumanner. We should also pray that God wihelp us not to bring reproach upon His namby setting bad examples.We should regularly pray, "Thy Kingdomcome," asking God to hasten the return oJesus Christ and the establishment of Godgovernment on earth. Only through Goddirect intervention in the affairs of mankincan peace and prosperity be established. Alsobefore that will take place, Christ said HGospel message of the Kingdom of God woulbe preached in all the world for a witness untall nations (Matthew 24:14). That is whatbeing done today by God's apostle, MHerbert W. Armstrong, and the WorldwidChurch of God!

While God does not want the emphasis ofur prayers to be on physical things, He doesxpect us to ask Him to provide us with ourhysical needs. Christ did not say we should beverly concerned about our needs for tomorow, next week, next month or even next year

We need to ask God for heand wisdom to resist the pressures of oupeers and to avoid things that we know aharmful.We should conclude our prayers by acknowedging that all power and glory belong to GoAlso, Christ later instructed His disciplesask "in my [Christ's] name" (John 14:13-14meaning by His power and authority. Wshould then end our prayers with " A m e n "meaning, so be it.Now you know the basic elements of praywhich Christ gave. We should not spend more ofour time and energy thinking about thesethings than we do in develop ing Godlycharacter.Notice Christ's promise to us if we put

spiritual matters first in our lives: " . . . and athese things [the physical things mentioned iprevious verses] shall be [not "may be"] addeunto you" (Matthew 6:33). Once we havphysical things in their proper perspective, anshow God that we know how to use themproperly, He will give us those things.Christ warned His disciples that itimpossible to serve both "God and mammon(verse 24). That is, they could not devote thetime and energy to serving God and acquirinmaterial things. The two are opposites. Servinone automatically eliminates the possibility oserving the other. Therefore, Christ urged thdisciples to put spiritual things first in thelives. By doing this, they would be developinGodly character, the one enduring treasur

strategies (verses 15, 23). In other words, theywould not teach obedience to God's commandments (Mark 7:7-9).Christ admonished His Team to check thefruits (results) of the ways of these falsecoaches (Matthew 7:16-20). I f their ways didnot produce peace, unity, cooperation andmutual support, they were not sent by JesusChrist. I f they did not uphold the same rules orlaws of God that Christ did, they were not sentby Him. I f they did not support the will of Godthe Father and did not do what He wanteddone, they were not sent by Christ. Jesus didnot want His team members to be deceived intobecoming members of the wrong team!Christ concluded His special instructions tothe disciples with an analogy. It is found in

Matthew 7:24-27. In it, Christ said that if thedisciples obeyed and practiced what He hadjust told them, they would endure the storms oflife just as a house built on a sturdy, rockfoundation endures physical floods.

A LESSON OF AUTHORITYAfter Christ finished His instructions to His

disciples, He entered the city of Capernaum.While He was there, certain Jewish eldersapproached Him about going to the house of aRoman centurion (a military officer whocommanded 100 soldiers) to heal his dyingservant (Luke 7:1-10). The Jewish eldersexplained that this centurion treated the Jewskindly and had built a synagogue for them andwas worthy of having his servant healed.Christ proceeded to the centurion's house, buta short way from the house, some friends of thecenturion met Him with a message from him:"Lord, I am not worthy that you should comeunder my roof: but speak the word only, and myservant shall be healed. For I am a man underauthority, having soldiers under me: I say to thisman, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another 'Come,'and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' andhe does it" (Matthew 8:8-9).Jesus Christ marvelled at the faith andunderstanding of authority which this man10

demonstrated (Luke 7:9). The centurion knethat Christ had the power and authorityheal. He knew that Christ only had to say thword, and the servant would be healed. Thcenturion always did what those in authoriover him said, and those under him in authorialways did what he said.The centurion's experience with authoritywsuch that when one in authority commandesomething, it was always done. Therefore, hknew that his servant would be healed if Chri

said so. The centurion's confidence anassurance that his servant would be healedcalledfaith (Hebrews 11:1).

WORKS PROVE MESSIAHSHIPShortly after Christ healed the centurion

servant, He raised a dead man back to physiclife again. News of this amazing miracle sprearapidly throughout the region (Luke 7:11-17The disciples of John the Baptist, afthearing the exciting news of the resurrectionthe dead person, went to John who wasprison. After they told him the news, hwondered whether this Jesus of Nazareth thementioned was the same person whom hbaptized earlier and whom he knew to be th

Son of God (Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-1Luke 3:21-22; John 1:29-34).To learn the truth of the matter, John setwo of his disciples to Jesus in Galilee. Upomeeting Christ, they explained that John thBaptist wanted to know whether He was thSavior and Messiah that was to come,

whether they needed to look elsewhere for Hi(Matthew 11 :2-3; Luke 7:18-20).Jesus did not respond verbally right awaRather, He first performed many miracleshealing in their presence.
