You may ask, "How can all these things relateto a man who lived on the earth nearly 2,000years ago?" Surprising as it may seem, thissame Jesus Christ is alive today and isconcerned about the same things as you and I.He wants us to have every good thing. Christcame that we might have life and that we mighthave it more abundantly! (John 10:10).Get ready to learn the astonishing facts aboutJesus Chr ist . DO YOU KNOW YOUR PARENTS?How well do you know your parents? Could

you pick them out if they were mingled in with ahuge crowd of people? Can you describe theirphysical appearances in specific terms, such as:2

color of hair, eyes and complexion; physical buildand size of body frame; length and style of hair;kind of nose or shape of mouth? Without lookingat them, on the following lines write a descriptionof each of your parents. _

Now check to see how accurate your descrip-tions were by looking closely at your parents. Ifyou really know your parents, you should havebeen able to quite completely describe theirphysical appearances.

Of course, knowing someone is more than justrecognizing his physical appearance. Knowingsomeone also involves understanding his person-ality and character traits-how he lives and whathe believes and stands for . You really knowsomeone when you know all about him.Is it important to know your physical parents?Of course it is. God has placed them in your livesto give you the love, teaching, training andphysical necessities of life. You go to them tohave your physical and emotional needs met, notto strangers. How many times have you gone upto a total stranger and asked him for food orclothes? Probably never. You don't expect astranger to provide for you, but you do expect

your parents to! And how do you distinguishbetween your parents and a stranger? You knowyour parents-their physical appearances, theirpersonalities, their characters!Have you ever been in a large crowdsearching for your parents? In the distance yousee the back of a man you are certain is yourfather. He has the same physical build, samecolor hair and is wearing the same color clothes. You needanother dollar from your father in orderto buy lunch, so breathlessly you race to yourfather and ask him for it. As he turns toward youwith a puzzled expression on his face, yousuddenly realize he is not your father-much toyour embarrassment. You don't expect astranger to give you money. Indeed, you wouldprobably be quite shocked if he offered you thedollar. But had the man been your father, youwould have expected that he provide the dollarfor you.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR GOD?You know your physical parents, but the nextquestion is, "How well do you know JesusChrist?" What kind of description could you giveof Jesus?Do you know what His personality andcharacter are like? Given a statement attributed

Did Jesus stand out from the crowd?

to Christ, could you tell whether it was somethinHe would have said or not, based on youknowledge of His character and personality?Just as you need to know your human parentin order to ask for your physical needs, so yoneed to know God the Father in order to ask thright Person who can and will give you youspiritual needs. Turn to Matthew 7:7-11, ancomplete the quote by supplying the words fromyour Bible: ., , and it shall b

knowing the Father is essential to receiving thosethings you ask Him for. So, let us come to knowthem both by examining the description of whatand who Jesus Christ was and is.CHRIST DESCRIBES HIMSELF

The description Jesus Christ has given us ofHimself is a written description, just like the oneyou were asked to give of your parents earlier inthis lesson. While Christ has not left us anypictures of Himself, He has given us a writtenrecord of what He looked like when He was onthis earth. In fact, He also tells us what He lookslike today. Both descriptions of Christ are foundin the Holy Bible. That is where we must turn tolearn what Jesus really looked like in the pastand what He looks like today. The truedescription of Jesus comes from Him, not fromthe imaginations of painters who did notunderstand the Bible. What then is the description that Jesus Christgives of Himself in His written Word? To find outwe must look at all the scriptures bearing on thesubject. Doing that will give us an accuratedescription, which is as complete as Christ wantsus to have.Open your Bible to Isaiah and complete thisquote from chapter 53, verse 2: "For he [Jesus]shall grow up before him as a tender plant, andas a root out of a dry ground: he hath no_____ nor ; and when weshall see him, there is no that weshould him." "Form" means"figure or appearance." Jesus had no unusual orparticularly outstanding physical appearance.Nor did He have "comeliness"-a physical"magnificence or splendor." He was neitherhandsome nor ugly. There was nothing aboutChrist's physical appearance that immediatelyimpressed people and caused them to flock toHim. He was not tall, dark and handsome. He didnot have bulgingbiceps like a weightlifter and Hiseyes did not make women swoon. He wasprobably what we would call plain looking. Jesuspossessed no striking physical traits that madeHim instantly recognizable-He had no halo!On the contrary, Judas Iscariot, who betrayedChrist, had to kiss Him in order to point out the4

right man to those who arrested Him. Read theaccount in Matthew 26:47-50: "And while he yetspake, 10, Judas, one of the twelve, came, andwith him a great multitude with swords andstaves, from the chief priests and elders of thepeople. Now he that betrayed him gave them asign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that sameis he: hold him fast. And forthwith he came toJesus, and said, Hail, Master; and kissed himAnd Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore artthou come? Then came they, and laid hands onJesus, and took him." Whom did Judas tell thathe would kiss Jesus? __________ . Judas said he wouldkiss Jesus in order to give the mob a sign"Sign" in the original Greek means also an"indication." A sign or indication points out orshows something.Notice what else Jesus had to say about thesituation when Judas kissed Him. It's recorded inLuke 22:52-53. Complete the quotation: "ThenJesus said unto the chief , and

of the temple, and the_____ , which were come to him, Be yecome out, as against a thief, with swordsand staves? When-- was ______ in the temple, ye stretched forthno hands against me: but this is _hour, and the power of darkness." Jesus saidthat those who sought Him had seen Him manytimes in the Temple. If Christ had had anydistinguishable physical trait, surely these menwho had seen Him at least once before would nohave needed Judas' sign in order to point ouJesus.

A MANLY HAIR STYLEChrist inspired the apostle Paul to write inI Corinthians 11:3-15 that it is a shame for a manto have long hair. Pay particular note to verses 4,

7, 14-15: "Every man praying or prophesyinghaving his head covered, dishonoureth his head[head here refers to Christ] . . . For a man indeedought not to cover his head . . . Doth not evennature itself teach you, that, if a man have longhair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman havelong hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given

What does the Bible say about long hair?

her for a covering." What is a woman given herfor a covering? . So the coveringof the head talked about in this chapter is hair, and more specifically, the length of the hair. What kind of hair is shameful or disgracefulfor a man to have? (See verse 14.)_________ . The Greek word for"long hair" means ornamental "tresses of hair."Look up the word tresses in a dictionary andwrite its definition: _

Many supposed pictures of Jesus have Himwearing curly, shoulder-length locks of hair. Arethose pictures consistent with what Christ saidwas appropriate hair length for men to wear?_____ . From this we know that Jesusdid not wear His hair shoulder length, as theworld pictures Him. Certainly Christ would nothave done something that He Himself said, through Paul, was shameful and dishonoredHim.Rather, His hair was probably worn insomeshortstyle common among Jewish men of His day.Remember , there was nothing outstanding aboutChrist's physical appearance. What was outstanding and recognizable about Jesus was Hismessage!

Jesus was a carpenter, a man of strength.

A MAN OF STRENGTHJesus' legal father was Joseph. He wascarpenter by occupation, as Matthew tells uschapter 13, verse 55: "ls not this the carpenterson? [referring to Christ] . . .' No doubt Jesuhelped Joseph with his work and becamecarpenter in His own right, since Mark mentionthe people calling Christ "the carpenter"chapter 6, verse 3. Doing the physical labor ofcarpenter throughout His teen-age and younadult years made Jesus a strong, muscularmanHis strength was that graceful power that comefrom physical work and play and not from vabody building.Johngives usa glimpseof His strength in Joh

bles." Certainly, the cleansing of the Templeas not accomplished by a weak man!The beatings and abuse that Jesus suffereduring the time from His arrest until His deathlso show that He must have been physicallytrong and vigorous. Notice what was done toim as recorded by Matthew in chapter 26,erse 67. Fill in the blanks. 'Then did they spit inis face, and [rapped with the fist]im; and others [slapped] himith the palms of their hands." Matthewescribes what the soldiers did to Christ inhapter 27, verses 26, 29 and 30. f Jesus is incorrect.A TYPICAL JEW OF HIS DAY

Racially, Jesus was a Jew and a descendantf King David. Luke records Christ's genealogyhrough His mother Mary. Read Luke 3:23-38,aying particular attention to verses 31-33:hich was the son of David, Which was the sonf Jesse . . . which was the son of Juda." As aew (one of the family of Judah), He wasaucasian, not Oriental or black. and His skinolor could have been anything from olive toite. His facial features would have been thoseharacteristic of Jews. The color of His hairould have been black, brown or red. It isoubtful that His hair color was such that it wouldve drawn one's immediate attention. The colorf His eyes could have been most any colormmon to mankind.Jesus Christ did not leave us any morepecific details about His physical appearance.hat He told us is enough to rule out the world'salse ideas of an effeminate Christ. At the same

time, His description lacks enough details for uto be able to draw a completely accuratrepresentation of Him. No doubt this waintentional on His part. For it prevents us frommaking, and consequently worshiping, pictures oHim, which would break the Second Commandment. Christ's physical appearance is not thmost important aspect of His human life, anywayWhat He wants us to understand and imitatmost are His mental, spiritual and emotional traitof character.

THE CHARACTER OF CHRISTLet us now look at the character Jesusdeveloped as a human being-at the mental, spiritual and emotional traits that made Him themost balanced Person ever.Even as a young boy of 12, Jesus wasinterested in using the mindGod had givenHim toincrease His learning and knowledge-especiallythe spiritual knowledge contained in the Bible.Jesus listened to and asked questions of theteachers, and that, together with the Holy Spirit, which He had from birth, gave Him such spiritualunderstanding that even His teachers marveled.Notice what Luke records about this inchapter 2,verses 46 and 47, by completing the quotation:.,And it came to pass, that after three days they

[His parents, Joseph and Mary] found him [Jesus]in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors[teachers], both them, and

them questions. And all thatheard him were at his_____ and ." As a resultof this attitude toward learning, Luke records in

chapter 2, verse 52: "And Jesus increasedwisdom and stature, and in wit_____ and ." As Jesugrew mentally and spiritually, His favor with Goand man increased. In other words, Jesusmental and spiritual knowledge and understaning benefited Him not only in His relationship wiGod the Father, but also in His relationship witother people.

CHRIST A LAWKEEPERMatthew 5:17 shows us that Christ kept thLaw of God perfectly. Look up this verse ancomplete the quote: "Think not that I [Christ] acome to destroy the , or th_____ : I am not come to _

but to ." The "law" and th"prophets" is a reference to the Old Testamescriptures. "Fulfil l" means to "fi ll up, completperfect or perform fully." Read all of Matthewand see how Jesus shows us the Law of Godto be obeyed and lived in its spiritual intent-nojust in its literal sense. For example, we keep thSixth Commandment in its literal sense by nmurdering someone. But Jesus showed usMatthew 5:21-22 that we must keep the SixCommandment in its spiritual intent by not evehating someone, since hatred is the spirituexpression of murder. What did Christ say was the spiritual intentthe Seventh Commandment against adulteryWrite the 28th verse of Matthew 5: _

Christ said it was breaking the intent of thSeventh Commandment to look lustfully afterwoman.Notice also what He said about swearinand the taking of oaths. This is found in Matthe5:34. Complete the verse: "But I say unto yoSwear_____ ; neither by heaven; for it is Godthrone." From these scriptures in Matthew 5 wcan be sure that Christ did not have hatretoward any other man, did not look lustfully aftewomen and did not swear.Additional insight into Jesus' spiritual charater is found in Luke 4:16. Read the scripture

What did Christ customarily do on the Sabbathday? _

The synagogue was where the Jews in Jesus'day assembled on the Sabbath to worship Godand receive religious instruction. It was theequivalent of our Sabbath services today. Jesuskept not only the letter of the Law by not workingon the Sabbath (see Exodus 20:8-11), but alsothe spiritual intent by attending Sabbathservices-at the synagogue.

EMOTIONAL BALANCENow that we have had a glimpse of thespiritual character of Christ, let us see what Hewas like emotionally. You would certainly have to

admit that Jesus was bold and courageous.Notice Matthew 14:22-25. These verses containthe account of Jesus walking on the stormy seato His disciples who were in a ship. Not everyonehas the faith and courage to start walking onwater! The incident shows the great trust Jesushad in God the Father to even make it possiblefor Him to do this.Matthew 21: 12-13 witnesses to Christ'scourage. These verses recount the time whenJesus marched into the Temple and drove out themoneychangers and the animals. The moneychangers and sellers obviously did not like whatChrist did to their businesses. Surely Jesus wasnot ignorant of that fact, and He went into theTempleknowing full well that they would hate Himfor what He would do. But Jesus knew what wasright, and that was all that mattered to Him. Heacted regardless of what the others thought ofHim. He did what His Father wanted Him to do!This Temple incident also points up anotheraspect of Christ's emotional side: He could andwould show righteous anger-God's anger inHim! Jesus did not become angry because Hewas hurt by their words and actions, but becauseHe realized how deeply they were hurtingthemselves by their actions of disrespect towardGod the Father!Jesus also had great compassion on all peopleand felt deeply their physical and spiritualsuffering. Notice Matthew 9:35-36. Supply the8

missing words in the scripture: "And Jesus wenabout all the cities and villages, teaching in theirsynagogues, and preaching the gospel of thekingdom, and every sickness andevery disease among the . Buwhen he saw the multitudes [of people], he wasmoved with on thembecause they fainted, and were scatteredabroad, as sheep having no shepherd."Another illustration of Christ's compassion andgenerosity is given in Matthew 15:32-38, whereHe miraculously fed more than 4,000 peoplewho had been following Him. Read, in verse 32what Jesus said to His disciples: "I haveon the_________ because they continuewith me now three days, and ______ : and I will not _lest they faint in the way."Sorrow and grief are other emotions that werenot unknown to Jesus Christ. Ina prophecy abouChrist, Isaiah mentioned in chapter 53, verse 3that "He is despised and rejected of men; a manof , and acquainted with. . . . " "Sorrows" means "anguish" or "pain"-both physical and emotional"Grief" means "intense emotional suffering" o" acute sorrow." Jesus was very familiar with theintense emotional pain people sometimes suffered. Turn to John 11: 17-45 and read theaccount of Lazarus' death and his resurrection tolife by Jesus.Lazarus was a friend of Jesus, and the brotheof Mary and Martha. Jesus knew that God wouldresurrect Lazarus through Him. He arrived at thehome of Mary and Martha after Lazarus hadalready died. Martha was very disappointed andhurt that Jesus had not hurried to their houseafter learning of Lazarus' illness, since she knewHe could have healed him. Mary's reaction wasmuch the same. Jesus explained that Lazaruwould be raised again to l ife-that Jesus' delayin coming was to fulfill a great purposeResurrecting Lazarus would be a great witnessto the people and would teach Mary and Marthaan important lesson they needed to learn. Nownotice in particular verses 33-35 of John 11

"When Jesus therefore saw her [Mary] weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her,he [Jesus] in the _and was , And said, Where haveye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come andsee. Jesus ." Christ sighed withdisappointment and wept because He realizedhow pitiful was the spiritual condition of thosepresent. Jesus did not cry because He felt sorryfor Himself for losing a close friend. He criedbecause He felt sorrow for others.Jesus Christ had emotions and He expressedthem. He became angry, in a right way and forright reasons. He laughed and experiencedenjoyment. He also cried, in sorrow andcompassion for others. It is important to realizethat He did not stifle His emotions, nor did He letthem control Him. Rather, He learned how tocorrectly express His emotions. Emotionally, asin all other aspects of His life, He was active andbalanced.

Jesus was also known as "the Lord of hosts.(See I Samuel 1:3.) "Hosts" are "masses opeople" or "armies." Christ is the Commander oangelic armies, which will soon return with Him.Psalm 7:17 speaks of Christ as "the Lord

most high," showing that there is no greater godthan the Lord, or Eternal. And Jeremiah recordsin chapter 23, verse 6, that Jesus shall be called"The Lord our righteousness."Another title Christ held in the Old Testamenwas that of High Priest. Genesis 14:18 speaks oMelchizedek, who was "the priest of the moshigh God." In Hebrews 7: 1-3 we learn whoMelchizedek really was: "For this Melchisedecking of Salem, of the moshigh . . . first being by interpretation of . . . withoudescent, having neither beginning of days, noend of life; but made like unto the _of ; abideth acontinually." So Christ was, iaddition to His many other offices in the OldTestament, the high priest Melchizedek.Spokesman, Creator, Healer, the Lord whosanctifies, the Lord of hosts, the Lord ourighteousness, High Priest-all of these weredifferent names for the One who became JesuChrist.

who spoke for the One we know as the Father. He was the One who spoke to Adam and Eve,Moses and the patriarchs. The Word wasGod-one Person of the Godhead (God Family). He was also the One through whom all thingswere made. That means that the One who laterbecame Jesus Christ was also the One who wasthe Creator mentioned in Genesis 1. He was theCreator who emptied Himself of HisGodhood andbecame a human being-the "Son of man"- inorder to accomplish all that was necessary inorder for us also to become members of the GodFamily. In addition, Jesus Christ was the One referred

to in the Old Testament as "the LORD [Eternal]."Turn to I Corinthians 10: 1-4 and finish thescripture: "Moreover, brethren, I [Paul] would notthat ye should be ignorant, how that all ourfathers were under the cloud, and all passedthrough the sea [Red Sea]; And were all baptizedunto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And didall eat the same spiritual meat; And did all drinkthe same spiritual drink: for they drank of thatspiritual Rock that them: and that_____ was .' This clearlyshows that the "LORD" who spoke to Mosesand led Israel out of Egypt was the One who laterbecame Jesus Christ. He was the same Lordwho spoke to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph,Samuel and Jeremiah. As the Lord of the Old Testament, Jesus had

many names, each of which identified one of Hischaracteristics or named a function He performed. One of His names identified Him as theHealer. Notice Exodus 15:26: "And said, If thouwilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thyGod, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keepall his statutes, I will put none of these diseasesupon thee, which I have brought upon theEgyptians: for I am the

and his [face] was asthe shineth in his strength."Jesus' face, as the resurrected firstborn Son

of God, is brighter to look at than the sun. Noticethat Christ still has the form of a man, but He isnow composed of spirit-not flesh and blood. Hehas a head, hair, eyes and feet as we have. Hisfeatures are just not physical like ours. Jesusexplained what being spirit is like to Nicodemus inJohn 3:8: "The bloweth where itlisteth [chooses], and thou the--- thereof, but canst not

whence it , andwhither it : so is everyone that isof the . " He

compared being composed of spirit to the wind, which you cannot see, though you can see whatit does. We cannot see spirit beings, but we cansee what is done by them. Through the apostlePaul, Jesus says that spirit is immortal-that is,it cannot die or cease to exist. (Read ICorinthians 15:51-57.) Jesus is immortal and, therefore, will exist forever. We who becomeborn sons of God will also exist forever. What names and offices does Jesus Christhave today? Read Hebrews 9:11. What hasChrist become once again? ______ . As our High Priest, Jesus Christmakes it possible for us to come to God theFather in prayer. God says through Isaiah inchapter 59, verse 2: "But your _have separated between you and your God, andyour have his facefrom you, that he will not "However, Christ's death paid the penalty of oursins, so that now God the Father will hear ourprayers.Revelation 19:16 tells us of another title Christholds: "And he [Christ] hath on his vesture andon his thigh a name written, OF

KINGS, AND OF LORDS." Jesusshall soon return to earth to restore God'sgovernment on it forever. He shall then be Kingover all other kings and Lord over all otherlords.

John the Baptist called Jesus "the Lamb oGod," because Christ was to give His life for aof us just as a lamb was sacrificed in ancienIsrael for sins. (Read John 1:29.) Christ referreto Himself in John 6:35 as "the bread of life, meaning His teachings were the spiritual foonecessary to sustain our spiritual lives. We museat (read) and digest (understand) and assimilat(apply) Christ's teachings in order to growspiritually.

"The good shepherd" was another namJesus applied to Himself in John 10:11, becausHe did, and does, take care of His people asshepherd does his flock. He provides for ouneeds both physically and spiritually, and Hprotects us from those who would do us physicaand/ or spiritual harm.Jesus was also called "Emmanuel" (Matthe

1:23), which means "God with us." He was Gowho became a man and dwelt among men. Thname Jesus actually means "Savior," an"Christ" means "the Anointed One" or "Messiah." He was specially chosen by the Father tsave mankind from the spiritual death penalty. You have just had a glimpse into the life oChrist-yesterday, today and forever. In thfollowing lessons we will be looking more closelat the wonderful example of balanced living thaJesus Christ set for us. We will learn how Chrislived life fully, yet always within God's laws, foHe is "our lawgiver" (Isaiah 33:22).
