Welcome to Aquinas Maths

Welcome to the first year of A Level Maths.

Without a doubt, compared to GCSE the content will be greater, the pace will be faster and

the topics will be more difficult. Therefore, we will have very high expectations of you.

However, if you meet these expectations from the start, you will succeed on a very

challenging but enjoyable course.

If you ever need any extra help outside of class, we have an open-door policy in our

department so you can ask any teacher for help, even if they don’t teach you.

Course Structure

This course is made up of 3 exams, which are each worth 1

3 of the A Level.

Each exam will last for 2 hours and will take place at the end of 2 years.

All exams will require the use of the ClassWiz calculator.

The first exam assesses Pure Mathematics.

The second exam also assesses Pure Mathematics.

The third exam assesses Statistics and Mechanics.

Independent Study

To succeed in Maths you need to practise, practise, practise.

There is not enough time in class to get enough practise and so you will be expected to do

most of this practise outside of lessons. We recommend that you spend around 5 hours a

week outside of lessons doing this additional work.

Each week you will be expected to

Work through the Integral Maths Walkthroughs

Work through the Integral Maths Notes & Examples

Work through the Integral Maths Skills Packs

Go over the powerpoints used in class (found on the aquinasmaths website)

Complete Exercise Level 1 (Develop) on Integral Maths and mark these exercises

o Use a different colour to mark

o Use the solutions on Integral Maths

o Do NOT just write out the correct answers

o Circle where you have gone wrong and correct your working

o If you don’t understand a solution, ask

Complete Exercise Level 2 (Progress) on Integral Maths

o Use a different colour to mark

o Use the solutions on Integral Maths

o Do NOT just write out the correct answers

o Circle where you have gone wrong and correct your working

o If you don’t understand a solution, ask

Use the rest of your time to practise questions from the e-textbook

o Select questions from a variety of topics to make sure that you are constantly

revising previous topics

o Mark your work, with a different colour, using the answers in the back

o If you don’t understand a solution, ask

Extra resources to support

Solomon Worksheets (found on the aquinasmaths website)

Video guides (found on the examsolutions website)

Extra resources to extend

Complete Exercise Level 3 (Extend) on Integral Maths

o Use a different colour to mark

o Use the solutions on Integral Maths

o Do NOT just write out the correct answers

o Circle where you have gone wrong and correct your working

Stretch and Challenge problems on the nrich website

Study Periods

During your study periods you are welcome to use any of our free rooms to do your Maths

work. You can use these rooms to do independent study or group study and can also use the

whiteboards.

If there isn’t a free room available, you can still use the study area at the end of the corridor.

Below is a timetable of when our rooms are free:

Page 6: L6 A Level Maths HandbookWelcome to Aquinas Maths Welcome to the first year of A Level Maths. Without a doubt, compared to GCSE the content will be greater, the pace will be faster

Assessments

You will have four assessments throughout the year: A1, A2, A3 and A4.

The dates for these can be found on the timeline.

The first two assessments will mostly focus on skills, with a few problem solving questions

and will be 45 minutes long. They will be based on all topics covered up to that assessment.

The last two assessments will focus more on exam style questions and will be 2 hours long

to represent the length of the real exams. They will be based on all topics covered up to that

assessment.

The results from these assessments will be used for the subject reviews and will be graded

from A* to E. As the assessments will only cover previous topics, the grades that you

achieve in these assessments won’t necessarily reflect the grades you achieve at the end of

the two-year course. However, we will be expecting high standards from the start.

To get full marks in any assessed work, you must not only give the right answers but also

explain your working clearly and give reasons for your answers. This may require writing

legible and grammatically correct English sentences. Maths is about logic and reasoned

arguments and the only way to present a reasoned and logical argument is by writing it out

clearly. Your writing may include numbers and other mathematical symbols but they are not

always enough on their own.

Where the use of a calculator is possible, full working does not need to be shown but any

steps before using the calculator must be shown clearly.

Feedback

Following each assessment, you will have some lesson time to review your assessment, gain

feedback from your teacher on your progress so far and practise any of the skills that you

feel particularly weak in. The dates for these feedback lessons can be found on the timeline.

It is important that you record any feedback in this booklet and set yourself targets so that

you can improve before the next assessment. Make sure that your targets are SMART:

Time-Based
