500-WIN CLUBFGCU founding head coach Dave Tollett collected his 500th win with the program by capping off the team’s weekend sweep at UNCW with a 10-1 win on Mar. 5. The four-time ASUN Coach of the Year who has led FGCU to four ASUN Regular Sea-son Conference Championships has recorded 30 or more wins in 11 of 14 seasons, including a program record 41 wins in 2006, and has led the Eagles to a winning mark in conference play in eight of nine seasons in the ASUN. He joined Mike Sansing of Kennesaw State and Smoke Laval of UNF as the only active head coaches in the ASUN with 500 or more wins, and the trio was recently joined by Lipscomb’s Jeff Forehand.

NATIONALLY RANKEDFGCU remained in the #9 spot in Collegiate Baseball Newspa-pers’ poll released Monday, maintaining the first top-10 rank-ing by any athletics program in school history. Even following a pair of loses, the Green and Blue also remained a consen-sus top-20 team by appearing at #16 in Perfect Games’ poll, #17 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, #18 in Baseball America and #20 in D1 Baseball. Additionally, the Eagles are the second-highest ranked non-Power Five program according to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

STREAKING...AGAINPrior to losing the last two games of its conference-opening series vs. Jacksonville, FGCU had won 10 straight and 20 of its last 21 games. The 10-game win streak not only matched a season long, but was also tied for the second longest win streak in Division I program history. More impressively, the streak came during the Green and Blue’s toughest stretch of the season. With its aforementioned win against FSU, FGCU capped off a 13-game stretch against 2016 NCAA Tourna-ment teams with an 11-2 record. With the win against the Seminoles, the Eagles also finished off a 10-game stretch against #1 or #2 seeds from last year’s tournament at 9-1. Since its midweek matchup against then #2 Florida Mar. 7 and 8, the Green and Blue have won three games against two-top opponents. Prior to this season, FGCU had won one such game in the program’s 15-year history. Prior to Saturday, the team’s only loss since Feb. 24 came at the hands of de-fending Big Ten Champion Ohio State, who handed #1 Oregon State its lone loss of the season.

THROWING UP ZEROESFGCU turned in back-to-back shutouts with last Wednesday’s win against Miami and Friday’s series opener vs. Jacksonville, marking the first time since 2014 the Eagles have shut out their opponents in back-to-back games. With a 3.08 staff ERA through 29 games this season, FGCU currently ranks 21st in the country in the category. A big part of the team’s success has been thanks to command of the strike zone as FGCU also ranks 4th in K-BB ratio (3.63)

TAKE THE STATEFGCU is 4-0 in games versus Florida, FSU and Miami this sea-son with two more road games against both the Seminoles and Hurricanes. After also taking down in-state rival FAU at the end of April, the Eagles swept the then #2 Gators in a pair of midweek games on Mar. 7 and 8 before turning around the following week and defeating then #1 FSU. The win against the Seminoles marked the team’s first win against a top-ranked opponent in program history. Additionally, after de-feating cross-state rival Miami, 3-0, Wednesday night, FGCU has now defeated the Gators, Seminoles and Hurricanes in the same season for the first time in program history.

head coach dave tollettCAREER HIGHLIGHTSA four-time Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year, head coach Dave Tollett enters his 15th season at the helm of the four-time ASUN champion Florida Gulf Coast baseball program. He was named the program’s first-ever head coach in August of 2001.

Under Tollett’s guidance, the Eagles made the transition into the Division I ranks by winning three straight ASUN regular season titles from 2008-10 and posting 112 wins in their first three years. En route to the conference championships, FGCU went 73-20 in the ASUN – the most conference wins by any team in the country over that span.

Tollett’s blue collar coaching style has helped quickly build FGCU into one of the rising programs in the country. Over his 14 seasons as head coach, Tollett has accumulated a record of 490-296-3 with at least 25 wins in all 14 seasons and four conference titles. The Eagles have won 58 of the 82 ASUN three-game series since joining the league in 2008, including all 10 in 2010.

Player development has also been prominent in the program’s history, as 34 players and signees have gone on to be drafted in the MLB Draft or signed as a free agent. In the summer of 2010, Collegiate

Baseball National Player of the Year Chris Sale and Casey Coleman became the first Eagles in the Major League – separated by just two days. Sale’s accent into the majors began when he was selected by the Chicago White Sox with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft. Coleman, a 15th round selection by the Cubs in 2008, became the first FGCU player in the MLB on August 2, when he was called up from Triple-A Iowa. Since then, former pitchers Richard Bleier and Jacob Barnes have also made their MLB debuts for the New York Yankees and Milwaukee Brewers, respectively, less than a week apart during the 2016 season.

A 1988 graduate of Tusculum College, Tollett also made his mark as one of the top high school coaches in the state of Florida. During his 10-year stint as head coach at Charlotte High in Punta Gorda, he posted a 175-96 record to become the winningest coach in school history. In six of his last seven seasons with the Tarpons, his peers selected him as the FHSAA District 16 Coach of the Year. His teams won one district championship and made five appearances in the Florida High School Athletic Association state playoffs in a district that included perennial state powers Sarasota and Venice. In addition to developing numerous players drafted by professional teams, Tollett’s teams have averaged over a 3.50 grade point average in the classroom over his last five seasons.

Tollett also spent five years as the Director of Coaching for the Southwest Florida Eagles, a developmental program that has turned out 24 Division I athletes and eight professional players. He served as the coach of the Southwest Florida All-Star team on nine occa-sions and served as the Florida Athletic Coaches Regional Chairman in 2002.

An active member of the American Baseball Coaches Association, he is the proud parent of twins Cal and McKenna and resides in Fort Myers.
