COMMUNITY-CONSERVATION-EDUCATION 2018-2019 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS COMMUNITY September – 16th Annual Harvest Festival for the community. March – 170 volunteers and 27 local sponsors shared in the 11th biennial Nehalem Estuary cleanup. April – Community Garden Plant Sale with vegetable seedlings and other plants. Spring – Wilson River School Oregon Youth Conservation Corps, St. Mary’s School in Medford, and Neahkahnie Middle School Day of Service volunteers worked on projects in the Community Garden & the Alder Creek Farm conservation area. Summer, Fall & Spring – Community gardeners provided the North County Food Bank and Senior Meal Program with fresh vegetables and fruits. Weekly – LNCT volunteers cared for our conservation properties, made improvements at Manzanita’s Elk Meadows Park, and joined Trailkeepers of Oregon in building a trail on the new Headwaters Property. CONSERVATION October – We received a donation of 111 acres of coastal spruce forest on the south slope of Neahkahnie Mountain, now known as Headwaters. A portion of the Oregon Coast Trail is being rerouted off Highway 101 through the Headwaters property, providing a safe and scenic passage for hikers. November – With our encouragement, the City of Manzanita extended the no cut stream buffers to 100 feet along Alder Creek as they harvest timber in the Alder Creek watershed. June – We completed acquisition of Botts Marsh in the Nehalem Estuary with the help of many partners. LNCT now protects 290 acres for our larger community. EDUCATION November – Nehalem Elementary School classes visited the farm and garden to learn about plants. March – Diversity, Equity, Inclusion training for LNCT Board and four other local non-profit boards. July, August, May, June – Ten Explore Nature Walks & Talks about sustainable gardening, pollinators, dragonflies, moths, wetlands and the diverse habitats of our properties. 2018-2019 – We designed and installed a number of habitat area and plant identification signs along the Nehalem Teaching Trail. Our mission is to preserve land and nurture conservation values in partnership with an engaged community in the Nehalem region of the Oregon Coast. FINANCIAL REPORT 2018-2019 BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2018-2019 Allan Olson, President Roxann Balmer, Secretary Jim Pendergrass, Treasurer Nancy Chase Doug Firstbrook Carl Vandervoort Mary Ruhl Thank you for allowing the time to read our annual re- port. It is a reflection of valued relationships and shared accomplishments at LNCT. We offer this glimpse of our recent work while recognizing our good fortune to have your interest, your support, and your friendship. Over and over, we are re- minded how fragile this planet is and that it is time to act. In my earlier years, I was naïve enough to hope that “someone” would take care of all of the natural world problems that concerned me. I thought it was sufficient to respect and appreciate the forests and waterways, and do no harm. Today, I know that is not enough. We have learned that a salt marsh is one of the plan- et’s most effective carbon sinks. The LNCT commu- nity can take great pride in saving Botts Marsh, one of few Oregon Coast salt marshes, providing off-channel habitat for young fish and other aquatic creatures and plants. The 111-acre Headwaters property is another example of how our combined efforts can reverse man-made impact on our land. Our volunteers have started the reforestation. We can take comfort knowing that these trees will grow to provide climate resilience through carbon storage for hundreds of years to come. I have learned the power of people working together when they have shared values and vision. LNCT is the embodiment of this. Along with many others, I take great pride in being part of the Trust and welcome those who want to join us. Together we can do a great deal to protect and preserve this beautiful place where we live, play, and enjoy nature.
