He is a talented young man born in Mi-ami, of Vene-

zuelan descent, who is succeeding as a soccer player in England. Si-mon Rodriguez plays for Thackley F.C., a soc-cer club based in Thack-ley, near Bradford, West Yorkshire, England.

ExPERIENcEAt the age of three, Si-mon discovered his passion for soccer; and as he grew older, he continued to learn and develop his talent for this sport. As a middle school student, he trav-eled during the summer to Brazil where he im-proved his technique

and playing style. He also traveled to Germa-ny, during another sum-mer, where he had the opportunity of playing for a professional team. Simon, who also has a license for flying, is very happy with his per-formance during the al-most seven months that he’s been in England.

HOW DID THE ScOUTS FIND yOU?During a showcase at Disney, I won a schol-arship to study in Vermont. And while I was attending a Uni-versity in Vermont, the recruiters noticed me and spoke with my coach. Now, I play for a semi-professional team in England.

HOW DO yOU FEEL IN ENGLAND?I play soccer, they pay me, and I enjoy the English culture. I train three times a day: at 6, 10, 3, and some days I play at 8 in the evening. I've decided to continue my life playing soccer.

WHAT DIFFERENcES DO yOU FIND BETWEEN AMERIcAN AND ENGLISH SOccER?In England, young peo-ple have more opportu-nities to play for soccer teams because children are chosen to be in vari-ous academies at a very young age and you get paid starting at fifteen years old. Soccer over there is stronger, faster and a lot more physical.

In South Florida, soccer is more technical and nicer.

WHAT DO yOU THINk IS THE kEy TO SUccESS IN SOccER?Soccer is discipline. There's a big differ-ence between a player who stays up late and one that rests well. It is very important to stay focused on your goals. Also, it is necessary to take care of your meals; I drink a lot of water, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. I don’t con-sume candies, sodas, or alcohol.

DID yOU FIND IT EASy TO ADAPT TO THE TIME cHANGE AND WEATHER?

If you want to be there it should be easy for you to adapt to changes. For example: many times we play in cold weath-er, snow, or rain; this should not be a prob-lem, if what you want is to play in England. In order to be success-ful in soccer you must make sacrifices.

WHAT PLANS DO yOU HAvE FOR THE FUTURE?My agent is arranging a tryout for me with a first division team in Switzerland, Finland, and Denmark. After two years of playing with them, they would send me to Italy or Spain. I think doors have opened for me.

KENDALL UNITED

Pedro melendez is a Peruvian CoaCh who develoPs talent in the Children of south florida.

TexT & PHOTO: NeWSROOM/MeDIAPLUS

Kendall United U14 is a powerful girls soccer team in Miami. It is led by Pedro Melendez, who

has dedicated a great part of his professional life to coaching. Pe-dro’s experience comes from lead-ing a legendary Hispanic team in New York in the 80s, where great professionals like “Perico” Leon and Teofilo Cubillas played. Now, in Miami, he answers some ques-tions for Soccerplus.

WHAT IS yOUR ExPERIENcE IN SOccER?I’ve been a coach longer than I’ve been a player. I started studying Physical Education, but you learn the most when you are close to great coaches; in my case, I was close to Cesar Luis Menotti, the famous Argentine coach.

WHAT DOES IT TAkE TO BE A SOccER PLAyER NOWADAyS? A real athlete. You could play well before because you were techni-cal, but now the physical aspect is the most important.

WHAT DO yOU THINk ABOUT SOccER IN SOUTH FLORIDA?Youth soccer lasts only a brief time. The players graduate, they start their jobs, and they’re not interested in continuing with soc-cer. I worked as a coach on the Long Island University team; out of that team, only two players ended up as professional players, but they were all talented.

DO yOU THINk THE U.S. NATIONAL TEAM IS READy TO WIN THE WORLD cUP?We don’t live soccer in the U.S. as in Latin America or Europe. But our level has improved notorious-ly. Besides, the United States is the country with the most minor leagues; a lot more than Brazil

and Argentina. The U.S. soccer federation is working with chil-dren between the ages of 10 and 12, and even though I don’t share this opinion, they think they can win the World Cup three world cups from now, that is in 2026.

WHIcH TOURNAMENTS DOES THE cLUB PARTIcIPATE IN? We play seven tournaments a year. The most relevant ones are the Disney competitions, the Sarasota and the Naples Tourna-ment.

HOW IS WORkING WITH GIRLS DIFFERENT THAN WORkING WITH BOyS?Girls are more obedient than boys. They learn faster than boys too. They have their limitations because of their female bodies; they can’t play with their chest. They don’t have the same perfor-mance as a boy either, but they can run faster. That is why the United States has won several World Cups championships in the women’s category and not in the men’s category.

WHAT DO yOU THINk OF THE NEW RULES THAT LIMIT PLAyERS FROM HEADING?I respect them, but I don’t agree with them.

WHAT qUALITIES MUST A GIRL HAvE TO SUccEED?She needs to be an athlete. She must also have the right weight, that’s important. And she must keep her emotions under con-trol during a competition. I think that’s why American girls win be-cause they are tough.

WHAT DOES SOccER MEAN TO yOU?After my wife and daughter, soc-cer is everything to me.

informa-tion.”

taLentone of the rising stars in girls soccer in Florida is camila Lezcano. the young player started playing soccer a bit more than a year ago, and she is already a role model. “I am in the odp, olympic development program, try-ing out for the Federation of Florida. they choose a few girls to play for the national team in the olympics,” com-mented camila with certainty. the 13-year-old girl trains under pedro’s direction at Kendall united. there is an entire galaxy of young soccer stars who, like her, train hard and are focused on continuing to improve in this sport. “I want to play like a professional,” she affirms decisively. Megan Garriba and Isabella stoffie are her teammates at Kendall united. they also enjoy playing soccer very much. at Kendall united, the girls are the present and the future of soccer.

"The idea of N Zone is to become a place where all boys and girls can

play and enjoy soccer," says Felipe Blandon, the creator and manager of N Zone.It is a place where all children are welcome regardless of their ca-pacity or ability and where everyone is treat-ed the same! In addi-tion, N Zone also works on physical education with day care centers or schools.

WHAT DOES N ZONE MEAN FOR yOU?It's my career; I work very hard to have what we have achieved. It is a family business, you could say that my wife is the brains of all this. All of us who work with the kids Michael, Ste-fan, Cristian and I take care of the academy like a baby. We take a lot of pride in what we do and how we do it.

HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER AcADE-MIES?We're not the stereotypi-cal academy but the sys-tem we have works. Par-ents are happy, and the kids are learning, and most important, they are developing their skills and having fun.

WHAT IS THE cON-cEPT OF N ZONE?All the children perform drills at the same time

and everyone has a soc-cer ball at their feet 90 percent of the time.As a matter of fact what we ask children is that they should make an ef-fort.

WHAT IS yOUR ExPE-RIENcE IN SOccER?After my family, soccer is everything to me. I started playing in Nica-ragua for the U17 nation-al team. Then I played for the University team and I also played in all South Florida leagues from West Palm Beach to Homestead.

HOW MANy cHIL-DREN AND cOAcHES DO yOU HAvE?We have 51 children and five coaches. There are three groups: from three to four, five to six, and eight to thirteen. And seven-year-olds are grouped according to their skill and develop-mental level.

HOW DO cOMPETI-TIvE MATcHES WORk? We make different teams with the boys and girls of N Zone. These kids play on different teams every Saturday. We make up balanced teams, that is to say we mix experienced play-ers with those who have just started to learn. The idea is not to have chil-dren on the bench so that everyone has the opportunity to play.

the world. Keylor Navas is a brilliant soccer player who was recruited by Los Blancos due to his great talent. So far in 2017, Key-lor Navas has already re-ceived awards such as: the best Latin American player and another very import-ant award, the 2016 CON-CACAF Best Goalkeeper; Navas received both with plenty of joy and pride.

cRITIcISMEven though some media says that he has decreased his level, the club presi-dent, Florentino Perez, has confirmed his support to Navas as the starting goal-keeper. With Real Madrid alone, Keylor Navas was the starting goalkeeper in 42 games in 2016, in the same year the club won the UEFA Champions League and Club World Cup.

HIS STORyHe started out his profes-sional career at Deporti-vo Saprissa, winning five national championships. After this, when he turned 23 years old, he moved to Spain to play for Albacete Balompié in the 2010-11 season of Spain’s second division but his team suf-fered relegation and he was transferred to Levante Unión Deportiva. His club ascended to Spain’s first division. Also, he was granted the League’s Best Goalkeeper award. Later on, after his brilliant per-formance in the World Cup Brazil with Costa Rica’s na-tional soccer team, he was signed by Real Madrid in 2014. In the 2015-2016 sea-son, he reached the peak of his career after setting a new record by not conced-ing a single goal in his first eight appearances in the UEFA Champions League, with 738 minutes, surpass-ing on March 8, 2016, the Dutch, Edwin van der Sar’s 657 minutes record.
