MOWMNGTIPSo Tire chains cannot be used when the mower housing is

attached to tractor.

o Mower should be properly leveied for best mowingperformance. See "TO LEVEL MOWER HOUSING" inthe Service and Adjustments section of this manual.

o The left hand side of mower should be used for trim°ruing.

, Drive so that clippings are discharged onto the areathat has been cut. Have the cut area to the right of thetractor. This wilt result in a more even distribution ofclippings and more uniform cutting.

o When mowing large areas, start by turning to the rightso that clippings will discharge away from shrubs, fences, driveways, etc. After one or two rounds, mowin the opposite direction making left hand turns untilfinished (See Fig. 10 )o

o If grass is extremely tall, it should be mowed twice toreduce toad and possible fire hazard from dried clip °pings. Make first cut relatively high; the second to thedesired height.

• Do not mow grass when it is wet. Wet grass will plugmower and leave undesirable clumps. Allow grass todry before mowing.

o Always operate engine at full throttle when mowing toassure better mowing performance and proper dis-charge of material. Regulate ground speed by select-ing a low enough gear to give the mower cuttingperformance as well as the quality of cut desired.

o When operating attachments, select a ground speedthat will suit the terrain and give best performance ofthe attachment being used.

MULOHtNG MOWING T_PS

IMPORTANT," FOR BEST PERFORMANCE, KEEPMOWER HOUSING FREE OF BUILT-UP GRASS ANDTRASH. CLEAN AFTER EACH USE.

The special mulching blade will recut the grass clip-pings many times and reduce them in size so that asthey fall onto the lawn they will disperse into the grassand not be noticed. Also, the mulched grass willbiodegrade quickly to provide nutrients for the lawn.Always mulch with your highest engine (blade) speedas this will provide the best recutting action of theblades.

o Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet. Wet grass tendsto form clumps and interferes with the mulching action. The best time to mow your lawn is the early afternoon. At this time the grass has dried and the newly cut areawill not be exposed to the direct sun.

o For best results, adjust the mower cutting height so thatthe mower cuts off only the top oneothir:d of the grassblades (See Fig. IOB). For extremely heavy mulching, reduce your width of cut on each pass and mow slowly.

FKG.10B

MAX 1/3

Certain types of grass and grass conditions may re-quire that an area be mulched a second time tocompletely hide the clippings. When doing a secondcut, mow across or perpendicular to the first cut path.

Change your cutting pattern from week to week. Mowno rth to south one week then change to east to west thenext week. This will help prevent matting and grainingof the lawn.

E AND ADJUSTMENTS

ENGINE

TO ADJUST THROTTLE CONTROL CABLE

(See Fig.31)

The throttle control has been preset at the factory andadjustment should not be necessary. Check adjustment asdescribed below before loosening cable. If adjustment isnecessary, proceed as follows:

With engine not running, move throttle control Leverfrom slow (_) to choke (Xt) position° Slowly movelever from choke (IXI) to fast (_) position.Check to see if hole in throttle lever and hole in speedcontrol bracket are aligned.

o If holes are not aligned, loosen cable clamp screw andalign the holes by inserting a pencil or a !/4" drill bitthrough both holes.

o Pull throttle cable up to remove slack and tighten cableciamp screw. Remove alignment pencil or drill bit.

TO ADJUST CARBURETOR (See Fig. 32)The carburetor has been preset at the factory and adjust-ment should not be necessary, However, minor adjust-ment may be required to compensate for differences infuel, temperature, altitude or load. If the carburetor does needadjustment, proceed as follows:

in general, turning the adjusting needles in (clockwise)decreases the supply of fuel to the engine giving a leanerfuel/air mixture. Turningthe adjusting needlesout (counter-clockwise) increases the supply of fuel to the engine givinga richer fuel/air mixture.

IMPORTANT: DAMAGE TO THE NEEDLES AND THESEATS tN CARBURETOR MAY RESULT IF NEEDLE ISTURNED IN TOO TIGHT.

NOTE: The carburetor on this engine is tow emission. It isequipped with an idle fuel adjusting needle with a timitercap, which allows some adjustment within the limits allowedby the cap. Do not attempt to remove the limiter cap. Thelimitercap cannot be removed without breaking the adjustingneedle.

• Be sure you have a clean air filter and the throttlecontrol cable is adjusted properly (see above).

• Start engine and allow to warm for five minutes. Makeadjustmentswith engine running and shift/motion controllever in neutral (N) position.

o Idle speed setting - With throttle control lever in slow(_)position, engine should id!e at I750 RPM. Ifengine idles too slow or fast, turn idle speed adjustingscrew in or out until correct idle is attained.

o Idle fuel needle setting ° With throttle control lever inslow (_) position, turn idle fuel adjustment needle in(clockwise) until engine begins to die and then turn out(counterclockwise) until engine runs rough, Turn needleto a point midway between those two positions.

o Recheck idle speed. Readjust if necessary.

ACCELERATION TEST -

o Move throttle control lever from slow (_) to fast (,_)position. If engine hesitates or dies, turn idle fueladjusting needle out (counterclockwise) t/8 turn. Re-peat test and continue to adjust, if necessary, untilengine accelerates smoothly.

High speed stop is factory adjusted. Do not adjust -damage may result.

IMPORTANT: NEVER TAMPER WITH THE ENGINEGOVERNOR, WHICH IS FACTORY SET FOR PROPERENGINE SPEED. OVERSPEEDtNG THE ENGINE ABOVETHE FACTORY HIGH SPEED SETTING CAN BEDANGEROUS. STORAGE

Immediately prepare your tractor for storage at the end ofthe season or if the tractor will not be used for 30 days ormo re.

TRACTORRemove mower from tractor for winter storage, Whenmower is to be stored for a period of time, clean it thor-oughly, remove all dirt, grease, leaves, etc. Store in aclean, dry area., Clean entire tractor (See"CLEAN ING" inthe Customer

Responsibilities section of this manual).

o Inspect and replace belts, if necessary (See belt re-placement instructions in the Service and Adjustmentssection of this manual).

o Lubricate as shown in the Customer Responsibilitiessection of this manual.

o Be sure that all nuts, bolts and screws are securelyfastened, inspect moving parts for damage, breakageand wear. Replace if necessary.

o Touch up all rusted or chipped paint surfaces; sandlightly before painting.

BATTERY

Fully charge the battery for storage.

, After a period of time in storage, battery may requirerecharging.

• To help prevent corrosion and power leakage duringlong periods of storage, battery cables should bedisconnected and battery cleaned thoroughly (see "TOCLEAN BATTERY AND TERMINALS" in the Cus-tomer Responsibilities section of this manuai).

o After cleaning, leave cabtes disconnected and placecables where they cannot come in contact wibh batteryterminals.

o Be sure battery drain tube is securely attached,

o If battery is removed from tractor for storage, do notstore battery directly on concrete or damp surfaces.

ENGINE

FUEL SYSTEM_MPORTANT: IT IS IMPORTANT TO PREVENT GUMDEPOSITS FROM FORMING IN ESSENTIAL FUELSYSTEM PARTS SUCH AS CARBURETOR, FUEL FILTER,FUEL HOSE, OR TANK DURING STORAGE, ALSO,EXPERIENCE INDICATES THAT ALCOHOL BLENDEDFUELS (CALLED GASOHOL OR USING ETHANOL ORMETHANOL) CAN ATTRACT MOISTURE WHICH LEADSTO SEPARATION AND FORMATION OF ACIDS DURINGSTORAGE. ACIDIC GAS CAN DAMAGE THE FUELSYSTEM OF AN ENGINE WHILE IN STORAGE.

o Drain the fuel tank.

o Start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines andcarburetor are empty.

o Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in thefuef tank or permanent damage may occur.

o Use fresh fuei next season.

NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alternative inminimizing the formation of fuel gum deposits during stor-age, Add stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or storagecontainer. Always follow the mix ratio found on stabilizercontainer. Run engine at least 10 minutes after addingstabilizer to ailow the stabilizer to reach the carburetor, Donot drain the gas tank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer.

ENGINE OiL

Drain oil (with engine warm) and replace with clean engineoil. (See "ENGINE" in the Customer Responsibilitiessection of this manual).

CYLINDERS

o Remove spark plug(s).

o Pour one ounce of oil through spark plug hole(s) intocylinder(s).

Turn ignition key to "START" positio nfor a few secondsto distribute oil.

Replace with new spark plug(s).

OTHERDo not store gasoline from one season to another.

o Replace your gasoline can if your can starts to rust.Rust and/or dirt in your gasoline will cause problems.

If possible, store your tractor indoors and cover it togive protection from dust and dirt.

Cover your tractor with a suitable protective cover thatdoes not retain moisture. Do not use plastic. Plasticcannot breathe which allows condensation to form andwii! cause your tractor to rust.

_MPORTANT: NEVER COVER TRACTOR WHILE ENGINEAND EXHAUST AREAS ARE STILL WARM,
