BY GEORGE DOUGLAS

Over the past eightmonths, we have trav-

eled thousands of miles, fishing dozens of rivers withvarious water and weatherconditions. It's been quitethe adventure, to say theleast.

While this lifestyle is anabsolute dream come true, itis not without great chal-lenges around every bend.

Kype produces a publica-tion and film every threemonths—which, in itself, isa challenge. Deadlinescome quickly, and enor-mous obstacles, inevitably, find their way into ourpath—most often, coincid-ing at the eleventh hour ofthe deadline. Yet, through itall, I feel privileged and

honored to be in a positionwhere I can document, edu-cate and promote this amaz-ing sport.

Along our journeys, I amoften asked which areasKype Fishing Magazinefocuses on. Our primary tar-get is to capture steelhead, salmon and trout fishing onthe Great Lakes tributariesand West Coast rivers, forboth Canada and the USA.We also cover many inlandtrout rivers which are scat-tered throughout the conti-nent—and throughout theseregions, it is our objective tohighlight effective and ethi-cal methods of fishing forall these species.

We are gaining strengthwith each passing issue, as

we acquire new writers whopresent fresh perspectivesand valuable techniques. Weare proud of the fact thatnearly all our authors, atKype, are professionalguides and/or fishing busi-ness owners, each with theirown unique expertise andstorehouse of informationand resources, which theypassionately share with youvia their individual articles.

Keep in mind, as the pub-lisher of Kype, my goal hasbeen to establish a staff offishermen who can write, rather than a staff of writerswho can fish. The differenceis that fishermen who write, are the die-hards in thetrenches, landing fish day inand day out. They have

devoted their lives to thissport and have fishinginstincts that are infinitelysharp and precise. Althougha fishing guide’s writingstyle, for example, may beless polished than a profes-sional writer’s, it's the infor-mation they bring to thetable that has proven to me,to be much more valuable.

Whether writing a bookor an article, every author'sgoal is to find “their voice,"and it's an interesting con-cept to read someone's arti-cle without seeing theauthor’s name on it, andknow, just by their writingvoice, who wrote it. KypeMagazine is striving toestablish a “collectivevoice” that speaks volumes

A kype is a hook that forms on thelower jaw of a male trout, salmon orsteelhead, during spawning periods. This is their badge of power and dom-inance that is unique to only thesespecies. It's an explanation point, similar to the rack of a male deer—a sign of a warrior—a sign ofstrength. Only the brutes, only thestout, only the herculean bucks willdisplay this emblem of pure power.

These kype-busting bucks are knownto burn out drag systems, shattergraphite, and snap leaders as if they werea strand of hair, and with such a mark ofstrength, thus—the title of our magazine, KYPE.

to anglers around the world, encouraging them (especial-ly those who are stuck intheir ways) to step outsidethe box and explore theunknown, broaden theirstreamside horizons, andexpand their knowledge-base by learning differentfishing styles. We eagerlyset forth to achieve thisgoal through our greatstaff of qualified fisher-men and women who writeour articles.

The filming aspect of ourpublishing is perhaps thetoughest, since it's not assimple as setting up a cam-era and reeling in fish. There's a checklist about aslong as my fishing line, reminding me and my cam-era crew of every last vari-able that needs to be consid-ered before taking the firstshoot. It takes patience, but, more importantly, in-depth

planning to capture thevision we set out to create—as well as being in the rightplace at the right time, withexperienced anglers whocan not only catch fish onfilm, but to do it in such away as to teach and inspire.

We’ve all been blessedwith a great sport—let’s alldo our best to educate andpromote this sport in a posi-tive light, being good exam-ples to our children whowill carry on the chrometorch.

To everyone who haspicked up a copy of Kype,to those who subscribe, tothose outlets who carry ourmagazine, I personallythank you. We at Kype, appreciate your support, and invite you to continuewith us on our quest todeliver the best in steel-head, salmon and troutfishing.
