OVERVIEW Kliptown Youth Program (KYP) is a non-‐profit organization founded in 2007 by a small group of young, inspiring individuals who wanted to make a difference in their local community. By providing a free after-‐school program for 400 kids ages 8 to 20, KYP is the only organization in the area that seeks to further the education and development of the impoverished children of Kliptown. The tutoring program for students Grades 1-‐12 is the focus of the organization, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to reach his or her academic potential and grow into a skilled individual. In addition, each member receives two balanced meals a day and has the option to participate in the performing arts and sports programs. The passionate and dedicated staff members at Kliptown Youth Program believe that by fostering a culture of education and a sense of self-‐confidence, these disadvantaged children can create brighter futures for themselves. The community recognizes KYP as a safe place for children to learn, collaborate, and develop into skilled individuals. By empowering the next generation of youth, KYP fosters a positive cycle of giving back to the community to lift Kliptown out of poverty. MISSION To provide opportunities that will enable our young children to rise out of poverty VISION KYP seeks to empower and develop young, dynamic individuals into the next generation of leaders who will contribute to the betterment of themselves and their community. VALUES KYP values integrity, passion, commitment, and professionalism.

COMMUNITY BACKGROUND Kliptown is a suburb of the formerly black township of Soweto in Gauteng, South Africa, located 17km southwest of Johannesburg. As the oldest residential district of Soweto, Kliptown has immense cultural and historical importance, as it is where the Freedom Charter was signed in 1955. However, Kliptown still lacks essential needs such as schools, proper sanitation, electricity, health clinics, and more. With a population of approximately 44,000, the unemployment rate runs as high as 75%, teenage pregnancy over 40%, and HIV/AIDS infection at 30%. As a result, alcohol consumption, drug abuse, and crime are common at young ages. Since there are no schools within Kliptown itself, children must walk to schools in other towns. The high cost of schooling, which includes school fees, uniforms, shoes, lunches, and trips, prohibits many children of Kliptown from receiving proper schooling. Furthermore, English is i nadequate l y taught as a second language, which causes low success rates on the matric exam (i.e. final Grade 12 exams), preventing future educational opportunities. Despite these great challenges, the community of Kliptown possesses an incredibly strong spirit with an inspiring sense of culture and hope. As all the leaders of KYP grew up in the community, they personally understand its needs and genuinely care about improving the lives of future generations. PROGRAMS Education The tutoring program helps primary and secondary school students receive the extra help they need to succeed in school. Subjects include English language, Reading, Mathematics, and Science. Tutoring classes at KYP are separated by grades to ensure that all students receive personal attention pertaining to their school curriculum. The primary school children receive academic support every Mondays to Thursdays from 2 to 4 pm from young people who have completed their higher level studies and wish to offer their time to help while grades 8 to 12 are also supported on Tuesdays and Thursday between 5 and 7 pm by professional tutors and on Mondays and Thursdays they do peer learning and help each other as students on those subjects they struggle with. The library at KYP gives students access to syllabus textbooks and a variety of reading materials to improve their reading skills and broaden their minds. While only 1 in 3 students in Kliptown can expect to pass their matric exams at the end of Grade 12, the tutoring program has enabled most Grade 12 KYP members to pass. Food & Nutrition One of KYP’s top priorities is to provide well-‐balanced food to children who may not receive it elsewhere in order to ensure active and focused learning both at school and at KYP. Every member picks up two sandwiches each morning prepared during the day by our kitchen classes and they have on they have on their way to school and receives a hearty meal upon arrival at KYP in the afternoon. The members also learn the importance of nutrition and diet as part of their daily lives.

Technology All Students have access to 20 desktops computers and 25 laptops. Members utilize KYP’s computer lab for school-‐related research and projects, as well as computer training. KYP has E-‐learning software’s called my Cyber wall and Reading Eggs for the primary school program, which helps our students with literacy, Math and listening skills. KYP also provides free computer classes on basic Microsoft Office and Internet skills that take a duration of 6weeks per group of 20 people to the community. Performing Arts & Culture Members have the opportunity to express themselves through various types of cultural dances and drumming. The renowned Gumboots dance group has traveled to China, USA, Thailand, Germany, France to perform and has participated in festivals throughout South Africa, in addition to their frequent local performances. Female members of KYP participate in traditional dance and have performed locally in weddings and festivals. Sports Members are encouraged to be active and participate on soccer and netball teams. High-‐ level coaches are trained to mentor kids beyond just the technical aspects of the sport, teaching life skills such as determination and teamwork. These teams compete in township leagues and have won numerous tournaments. We also have swimming lessons that takes place every week at the Pimville public swimming pool. REALITIES While recent successes and achievements are uplifting, KYP is fully aware of the realities and challenges the organization faces both externally and internally, including:
• Limited resources and space restricts the number of possible members. • Limited awareness of organization in South Africa • Heavy reliance on word of mouth marketing. • Corporate funding guarantee and retention is an issue. • Reliance on specific family donations may not be sustainable. • Absence of government funding.
