KYEMPAPU END OF YEAR REPORT 2010-‐2011
Background The Kirinda Youth Environmental Management and Poverty Alleviation Programme Uganda (KYEMPAPU) was established in 2009 but legally started operating in February 2010. This report thus marks the first year of operation. Incidentally 2010 was also the UN International Year of Youth and 2011 is the International Year of Forests-‐ two areas in which Kyempapu is heavily involved. More information about KYEMPAPU can be found on its website at www.kyempapu.wordpress.com Under its vision: Improving Livelihoods and Climate Change, KYEMPAPU has been able to work on several projects and has thus far provided drinking water projects, sports tournaments, tree planting, environmental education and capacity building to its surrounding community. With a committed team of 12 volunteers, KYEMPAPU is committed to serve its expanding network of schools and communities. There are now 57 schools in the KYEMPAPU network, one women’s group and 6 youth groups. We would like to begin by thanking some of the volunteers in Uganda who have made KYEMPAPU what it is today: 1. ACHIEVEMENTS KYEMPAPU is proud of the following achievements over the past year: • Organized a New years sports tournament on January 1st 2011 for the children under 10
with support from our friends Fabrizio Adrioli (Italy ) and Eleni Plevra (ENO Programme Coordinator for Greece). The children who took part in the netball and football games expressed their thanks to KYEMPAPU for developing their talents.
• Following the training of KYEMPAPU’s Director Sylvia Namukasa and Coordinator
Muzawula Herman in the same program, KYEMPAPU carried out a capacity building workshop to orient environmental educators, head teachers and district officials of Bukomansimbi about the status of the environment in Uganda and introduce them to the ECO-‐School Program. Three schools were selected as pilot schools for this new project: Mirembe Muslim Primary school, Kyakajwiga Primary school and Kabandiko Primary School. The training took place in April at Mariaflo Hotel in Masaka and was funded by our regional partners of Conservation Effort for Community Development (CECOD) based in Mbarara.
• KYEMPAPU was able to distribute water purifiers to 6 schools and by so doing improvee the
sanitation and health of students thanks to the clean water made available. These water purifiers were donated to KYEMPAPU by our partners from USA Rain Catcher Inc, based in Maribu-‐California, led by Jack Rose and Martha Mc Bride. They also donated soccer balls to our schools from Nike and promised to return in March 2012 to expand the network by distributing more purifiers and water tanks for ran water harvesting. We look forward to seeing them again. Thanks to the clean drinking water in these six schools, the rate of suffering from water related illnesses such as diarrhoea, dysentery and malaria (originates from mosquitoes which lay their eggs in stagnant water) has been significantly reduced among students.

• The Waldorf UNESCO ASPnet Green School of Baltimore of Maryland USA mobilized funds for the construction of modern stoves for one of our 57 schools-‐ Bright Star Junior School. The funds were also used to purchase big pots. This has really brought joy to the parents, students and administrators of the schools as they are able to have their meals in time, save scarce wood fuel and eat up clean food that is free from contamination. As if that was not enough, the Walforf school still mobilized funds through the Plant for the Planet Foundation in Washington USA to establish a tree-‐planting project for the same school. We are so proud of Waldorf School and thank the school administrators and students community.
• For the first time KYEMPAPU has sent one of its students to Waldorf ASPnet Green School
in Baltimore. This is through the International Student Exchange Programme, coordinated by Alejandra Lorenzo Maria who also doubles as the Spanish teacher in the same school. Mugema Mathias a student of 10th grade in Blessed Sacrament Secondary School Kimaanya Masaka, who was nominated for his academic excellence after beating out several competitors. Mathias is also the KYEMPAPU Sports Coordinator and was Goalkeeper of the year 2011.
Mathias at home with some of his family members. He is active and all-‐round flexible student.
• KYEMPAPU was able to participate in the ENO-‐ ACT NOW Forests for the Future conference which took place in Joensuu-‐Finland from 13-‐17th September 2011. KYEMPAPU’s Director Sylvia Namukasa was awarded the Environmental Award for Uganda, and planted a tree in the Peace Park of Finland to commemorate the event. This event was funded by the Finnish government.
KYEMPAPU Director being interviewed by New Vision
• KYEMPAPU was featured in the famous national newsletter The New Vision as shown above. This created so many impacts and visibility for the Community Based Organization and has started yielding significant results.
• KYEMPAPU’s Director Sylvia Namukasa represented KYEMPAPU and Africa at the 7th
UNESCO Youth Forum in Paris, France in October 2011, an integral part of the UNESCO General Conference. She also presented a paper on How Youth Drive Change.
• KYEMAPPU was also represented by the Director General Sylvia Namukasa at the UN
Training on Gender and Conflict; early warning for early Response mechanisms, in Dakar-‐Senegal Uganda.
• Having started from zero with no computer to start with, KYEMPAPU now boasts one
computer which was donated by Xing Chiu and Chris Royle our Canadian partners based in Toronto. They also donated 2 digital cameras to KYEMPAPU which has greatly improved our communication with our partners and stakeholders.
• KYEMPAPU has established new partnerships. For example we have been able to submit
two essays from our students for the Challenge Future for Sustainable Competitions, which was organized by Challenge Future, Slovenia.
• KYEMAPU has monitored our projects and networked with several stakeholders.
• KYEMPAPU has constructed three self-‐contained single rooms to accommodate our
volunteers who will be joining us starting April 2012. Our first volunteers will arrive in April from Germany and Italy. Funds for this facility were donated by Studio 77 based in Germany.
• KYEMAPU received a training manual for instructors from GTZ–FIFA office based in
South Africa, which will help us train all sports teachers in our region of operation. (Subject to availability of funds estimated at US $3000)
• KYEMPAPU has planted so many trees in school compounds and we hope to plant forests in 2012.
CHALLENGES
• Limited funding which hinders us from implementing project activities in time
• Lack of skilled personnel. We only have one environmental professional so we require capacity building trainings for our graduate volunteers to help educate the communities and schools on several issues.
• We do not have permanent premises for storing our project equipment. This calls for purchase of a piece of land to construct offices, library, stores, and a conference hall among others, which is estimated at US$ 45,000.
• We promote youth talents through sports although we do not have the facilities to implement this. We need at least 100 soccer balls for both soccer and netball, goal nets, jerseys, sports shoes, beebs, funds to put up metallic goal posts since the ones in all schools are wooden and are usually eaten up by termites or used by community members for wood fuel. We also need tents, plastic chairs and a public address system so that we do not keep spectators standing under the hot sun while watching soccer/sports. The public address system will help us to mobile young people in a more vibrant way as well as campaign for environmental issues. This is estimated to cost US$ 25,000 with a generator since there is no electricity in the district where KYEMPAPU operates (a district in Uganda is equivalent to a State in USA).
• We need to equip our committed team of volunteers with computers fully connected to the Internet in this digital global world. We also need more office equipment like a printer, scanner, photocopier as well as projector for our training and for the day-‐to-‐day running of the office.
FUTURE PLANS
• Establish a tree nursery bed to reduce the costs of purchasing seedlings • Start up adult classes to see to it that we reduce the rate of illiteracy among our youth • Expand our piggery project to benefit more youth • Create more partnerships globally and nationally • Establishing our own demonstration forests for study visits and research
