Board of Directors and Headquarters News

From the ChairmanDear Members:Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee passed away on July 14,2002 at 7:05 pm, Korean time. This is a sad and signifi-cant time for all members of the Moo Duk Kwan fami-ly. It is an occasion to reflect upon the impact that oneperson can have throughout the world. Hwang Kee Kwan Jang Nim’svision, Mission 2000, has touched all corners of the globe. The KwanJang Nim affected each of us directly and his legacy and teachingsendure. This is a time to reflect upon his life and how his experiencesinfluenced his scholarship and teaching. As long as the Moo DukKwan family continues to live and teach Soo Bahk Do and Mission2000, the Founder lives on. Hwang Kee Kwan Jang Nim is not gone; helives on in every Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan practitioner.

On Thursday, August 1, 2002, in accordance with the Charter of theUnited States Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation, Inc., Walsh SaBom Nim, representing the Technical Advisory Committee, H.C.Hwang Sa Bom Nim, and I, representing the Board of Directors, went tothe First Union Bank where our Founder had placed in a safe depositbox a document naming his successor. Walsh Sa Bom Nim and I wereprivileged to witness the opening and reading of the document namingHwang Sa Bom Nim as Hwang Kee Kwan Jang Nim’s successor. Thiswas immediately communicated to both the TAC and the Board.During the National Championships, the TAC representative, Chung SaBom Nim, read a statement from the Korean Soo Bahk Do Association,Moo Duk Kwan, confirming H.C. Hwang Sa Bom Nim as the KwanJang Nim’s successor in that organization. On behalf of the UnitedStates organization, I confirmed his succession as well.

This orderly succession reflects on our Founder’s legacy. As manyof you are aware, upon the death of a founder, many martial arts orga-nizations dissolve as no method of recognized and orderly successionhas been put in place. The method chosen by Hwang Kee Kwan JangNim provides a legitimate successor appointed by the Founder in hisown handwriting and confirmed by our Charter. This allows the strongcontinuation as a Moo Do organization and allows all practitioners tocontinue what the Founder began.

The continuation of the Moo Duk Kwan necessarily requires Boardsupport of the T.A.C. via active Board Director participation. I haveheard the question raised on a number of occasions: What does theBoard do? Most recently, the Board has voted to put the Board Directorattendance and also the approved minutes of each Board meetingonline at the U.S. Federation website. This will help all members toevaluate their representatives’ commitments and the effectiveness oftheir representation of their regions and to see more clearly what theBoard actually does during the course of the year.

All members in attendance at the National Championships demon-strated action philosophy by their presence at this historically signifi-cant event and I look forward to seeing all of you next year at the 2003National Championships, July 25-27, at the Sheraton MeadowlandsHotel in New Jersey.Yours in Moo Duk Kwan,Lee Schumacher - Chairman, Board of DirectorsU.S. Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation

Article V of the U.S. Soo Bahk DoMoo Duk Kwan Federation Charter& By-laws contains informationregarding the officers of the U.S.Federation. Section 1 of Article Vnames Grandmaster Hwang Kee aslife-President of the U.S. Federation.

Article V, Section 2 of the charterstates “only one successor shallserve at a time and shall serve inaccordance with the Charter andBy-laws. The Grandmaster shallname his successor and has done soin a sealed document entrusted tothe Board of Directors.”

This historic document, writtenin Korean hangul by Kwan JangNim Hwang Kee, is shown at right.

The memo reads across the firstline “Legally/Officially Korean SooBahk Do Association Moo DukKwan,” the word “successor” on thesecond line, and the name “HwangJin Mun” * directly under that. Inthe bottom right corner is the dateand Grandmaster Hwang Kee’sname and seal.

On Saturday, August 3rd, as westood gathered at the NationalChampionships, listening to Sa BomNim Chung as he spoke, we knewwe were witnessing an emotionaland historic moment in our MooDuk Kwan history.

Although our hearts felt the lossof Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee, thefounder of our art, we were consoledby the precise way in which he pro-vided for us and we were reassuredand grateful that Sa Bom NimHwang was there to lead us andencourage us to “continue to keepGrandmaster’s teachings alive andmake our art a leading art.”

As our new President, Kwan Jang Nim H.C.Hwang invited us to uphold the Grandmaster ’s“habit and embrace his philosophy in our actions andthoughts.” He reminded us of some of the manycharacteristics that were created by the Grandmasterfor Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan: our connection toscholarly discipline, the use of the huri, the dan bonsystem, the do bak trim, etc. These gifts will forever

be a part of our unique and extraordinary heritage. As this historic document also becomes a part ofour proud history, so does our pledge of support tocontinue to carry out the mission of our Founder,Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee.

2002 National ChampionshipsNational Championships Journal

For all of our members whocould not attend the Nationals thisyear, we will do our best to reporton some of the activities of theevent. Keep in mind that this briefand limited summary in words cannever replace the thrill of beingthere and experiencing the actionfirsthand.

Integrity Through IntegrationThe activity started for us on

Thursday as we lined up for thefirst clinic. We were excited to beable to train under the TechnicalAdvisory Committee Chairman, SaBom Nim H.C. Hwang, and also toreceive instruction from two otherTAC Members, Sa Bom Nim TedMason of the Nae Gung Bu and SaBom Nim Jeff Moonitz of the ShimGung Bu. For me, training underthe seniors with other practitionerswho have traveled from all overthe country is one of the best partsof our Moo Duk Kwan gatherings.

It is said that you get out ofthings what you put into them, and I’ve learned that extendingmyself by attending camps andclinics has helped me improve mytechnique, and participating inthese seminars has added a criticaldimension to my knowledge andexperience. I am reminded againof this quote from Kwan Jang NimHwang Kee: “scholarship startswith study and ends in theory, andMoo Do starts with action andends in theory.” Could this bewhat he meant—that reading orhearing about things is only part ofthe lesson—that only being thereand actually putting the lesson intopractice completes it?

After a moment of silence tohonor the memory of Kwan JangNim Hwang Kee, to appreciate allwe have received through his sac-rifices and to realize that all of uswere there because of him, webegan our lesson. Sa Bom Nim

Hwang explained the theme to usso we could focus our minds dur-ing the session. He connected the“oneness through action philoso-phy” theme of the NationalChampionships to the applicationof our physical performances bydirecting us to maintain the one-ness and integration of our ShimGung, Nae Gung, and Weh Gungenergies throughout our tech-niques, from the beginning to thecompletion, with a special

emphasis on the intermediatemovements.

To help us understand theimportance of the concept and itsrelation to our guiding Moo Doprinciples, Sa Bom Nim Hwangshared an analogy about two chil-dren, each eating a cookie.Although both children look thesame, one child earned the cookieby practicing Soo Bahk Do, doinghomework, and helping withchores while the other child stolethe cookie from a younger sibling. Both children had the samethought of eating a cookie andboth ended up with a cookie, butbecause their methods differed, theresult was not the same. Although

both children obtained the shortlived “pleasure” of eating thecookie, only the first child experi-enced the positive effects of themore profound and lasting goodfeeling of pride and happiness thatgood actions give us. How we getthere is as important as where weend up. How we achieve is asimportant as what we achieve. When we achieve harmony of ourmind and body, thought andaction, through the proper process,

we feel good about ourselves andthat good feeling is conveyed toothers.

After the explanation anddemonstration, we were invited topractice the lesson through kichorepetition. Sa Bom Nim Hwanginstructed us to maintain the har-mony of our Shim Gung energy, the thought of our action from themind to the dan jun, our Nae Gungenergy (the thought moves fromthe mind and breath to the danjun) and our Weh Gung energy(the thought moves from the mindto the huri with the body follow-ing). He encouraged us not to be

Students practicing the proper Moo Do process in defensive hip motion.

satisfied with a hadan mahki thatlooked OK at the end but had lostthe proper connection on the way.No matter what we do, when wefollow the correct process from thebeginning through the middle tothe end, we will maintain theintegrity of all our thoughts andactions, and we feel good at thefinish.

The last portion of this firstclinic was devoted to applying theintegration concept to hyung prac-tice. The challenge here was tokeep our energy flowing freely soour hyung could be performed asa whole rather than as a series ofseparate moves without any con-nection to each other.

We were able to continue prac-ticing with the flow of energy dur-ing Sa Bom Nim Moonitz’s clinic. In his portion of the seminar wehad the opportunity to add theenergy of our natural surround-ings into our training. We workedon the transfer of energy, givingand receiving, in 4 of the Pal Gue(8 directions). We used the PoWahl Seh to receive and the Do

Mahl Sik to give. I couldn’t waitto try it outside!

We finished the seminar with avery interesting class given by SaBom Nim Mason. We listenedclosely as he explained the theory, history, and reasons behind someof the ceremonies (such as bow-ing), postures, and traditions wedisplay and the words we use. Doyou know where the word “kow-tow” came from? What about the“secret handshake”?

It was during this portion thatwe learned about the Jae Bae, 21/2

bows. This is a custom practicedby Koreans when a family mem-ber passes away. We were invitedto join Sa Bom Nim Hwang onSaturday when he was to performthis ritual in honor of Kwan JangNim Hwang Kee.

The end of the seminar cametoo quickly for us. We would haveliked to have kept training, but wehad jobs to do and meetings toattend. The National Tournamentwas only a few hours away!

The excitement continued tobuild on Friday and Saturday as

hundreds of dan and gup practi-tioners of all ages arrived fromnear and far. One memorableevent after another unfolded asthe weekend progressed. Asalways, the great spirit of ourFounder was felt continuouslythroughout the entire champi-onship. As we approached theballroom, we saw a table that washeavily laden with hundreds ofblack ribbons. Throughout theweekend each one of us wore aribbon beneath our Federationpatch as a symbol of our mourn-ing the recent loss of Kwan JangNim Hwang Kee.

Friday’s schedule began with aslide presentation put together bySa Bom Nim Segarra. The showconsisted of numerous pictures ofKwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee set tothe song “The Impossible Dream.”After this touching show wemoved on with Ko Dan Ja hyungsand ja yu dae ryun performancesand continued with team events. One of this year’s team highlightswas the addition of the new juniordan team hyung division. It was

“Oneness In Our Action Philosophy”

- National Championships 2002so gratifying to watch the young dansperform and to witness their pride andconfidence. Next year there will beeven more to enjoy with the senior danform teams. Anyone who holds a danrank knows how quickly 12 monthscan pass, so start practicing now!

The rest of Friday afternoon wasfilled with dan hyung and sparringcompetition. After the closing ceremo-ny everyone hurried to prepare fordinner and to meet with friends. Theevening’s official events ended with a“beach party.”

On Saturday, more members andtheir families arrived for the last day’sevents and the gup competition. Thefinal day of any of our national tourna-ments is always exciting and memo-rable, but this year it was truly unfor-gettable. We listened as our Federationseniors and leaders shared thoughtsabout Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Keeand we reflected on our own thoughtsas we quietly watched the slide pre-sentation organized by Master DeanBoland and Master Emily Hsu. Wenodded in understanding as Sa BomNim Jang read a letter from the KoreanSoo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan mem-bers. The letter expressed both the sor-row we suffered at the loss of our MooDuk Kwan founder and the resolve wefelt to continue what he started. OurKorean Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwanfamily asked that we “not forget July14, 2002 as the day a star fell from thesky,” but they also reminded us thatwe must “see the great future with oneSoo Bahk Do through oneness ofheart.” We must “remember [KwanJang Nim Hwang Kee’s] commitmentto unify all Soo Bahk Do’s brothersand sisters as one.” “It is Kwan JangNim’s philosophy that Soo Bahk Do beone family.”

We were all gathered together asone family that morning and we joinedSa Bom Nim Hwang in the “Jae Bae,”the two and 1/2 bow ceremony, tohonor Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Keeand to offer our farewell. After thissolemn ceremony we listened to the

important announcements regardingthe future of the Moo Duk Kwan inthis country and the rest of the world. It was at this time that Sa Bom NimH.C. Hwang was publicly confirmedas Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee’s suc-cessor. As our new leader, Kwan JangNim Hwang made his emotional andsincere opening remarks. As we werethinking about how grateful we wereto him for his continued willingness tosacrifice and dedicate his life to guideus through the Moo Duk Kwan philos-ophy, he thanked us for our trust inhim. It was from this point that wemoved on with the planned events ofthe day and the rest of our future.

The studio teams and individ-ual presentations were fabulous andthe kyok pa exhibitions were awe-some! The energy was high and itnever let up throughout the entire gupcompetition. The camaraderie andtechnical execution of the junior mem-bers large and small, young and oldwas inspiring to see. After the compe-tition was over and we finished theclosing ceremony, we had the opportu-nity to have our pictures taken withKwan Jang Nim Hwang. You shouldhave seen the line! After the photoswe said our goodbyes to those whowere heading home, and traded ourdo baks for banquet clothes.

As we mentioned, this briefsummary can never fully describe anevent as full and complete as thenational championships. We’ve left somuch unsaid, so many stories untold.I urge all of our members to makewhatever plans necessary to attend thenational tournament in 2003. It will beheld again at the SheratonMeadowlands Hotel July 29th –August 4. It will be a special eventnext year, because it will be an interna-tional event with Soo Bahk Do practi-tioners coming from all over theworld. Don’t be satisfied just readingabout it, be a part of it!

In Honor of Kwan Jang Nim Hwang KeeJack Kerouac, the drifting weaver of beatnik prose, onceuttered a fervent hope for the legacies of rare, inspiredindividuals who have moved beyond a temporal existenceof muscle and bone. Kerouac hoped it was true that suchpeople would “not only live in others, but give them life, and not only life but that great consciousness of life.”

Human history is peppered with appointments fromblazing souls whose ideas, convictions and creativity havestretched imagination, challenged limitations and movedthe masses towards heightened awareness. We feel thepulse of their energy humming in chords of universaltruth and we smile at the parallel attitudes of greatthinkers. One such man claimed, “We are at out best help-ing others and at our worst bettering them.” Another stat-ed, “Only a life lived for others is a life worth living.” Oneof these men was Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee and theother Albert Einstein…

Ours is a philosophy that continually challenges us toreach towards deeper and higher levels of discovery. Wetake up the Grandmaster’s charge to exemplify courage,self-sacrifice and reverence for nature and we transformnot only ourselves but the world around us…

During his commencement speech for the 12th annualNational Championships Kwan Jang Nim declared, “Wecome together in this national event to share our brother-hood and sisterhood as martial artists and to promoteworld peace to people of every nation, race and sex.”Now more than ever we may find ourselves wondering ifthe prospect of world peace is really attainable. Now morethan ever we find ourselves called upon to move to actionwith sureness and with hope. Grandmaster Hwang Keeembodied the latter virtue extolled by George BernardShaw when he declared, “Some men see things as they areand ask why. Others dream things that never were andask why not.”

From one man sprang the seeds of a philosophy thatstimulates an international family to embrace the virtues

of conscience, humility and honesty. There exists acertain resonance in the ideology of individuals likeour Kwan Jang Nim that transcends the cessationof physical existence. We mourn deeply the loss ofour cherished patriarch, but we also celebrate thebirth of an art that now stretches into six conti-nents, a multitude of cultures and a global commu-nity.

Respectfully Submitted,Kathryn Ward

This project willinclude contributions from all over the world, so participation is not limited to members of the U.S.Federation.
