Satar told his audience that the eventual goal of the project with Bali's Taman Safari Park is to propagate the population of birds in order to permit a sustainable

“We hope that through this program the conservation and propagation of the Bali Starling will permit visitors from Indonesia and abroad to enjoy these bird,” said Satar.

Hello again folks and welcome to yet another week in paradise. Let's get

straight into this week and talk about the calibre of some people that want to

be living and working on the island but simply can't afford it and let me tell

you I have seen a few come and go in my time. I had the pleasure of speaking

with a fellow that has been here for a long while the other day and during the

period that I have known him, I have heard the rumours and listened to the

heresay and always just brushed it off as bull dust, until, I had it firsthand

that he was borrowing money to help maintain his little lifestyle here. As it

turns out readers this bloke has been drifting along, counting on the good nature of many expats here and pushing his

hardest to milk any poor unsuspecting tourist that would listen to his plight.

As it turns out he tells everyone that he is doing it hard due to a medical condition which is stopping him from getting a

job back in Australia, hence him not being able to pay his bills or his staff who basically work for a pittance. The fact

that this charlatan has always got a beer in hand and usually drinks top shelf imported rum should set off alarm bells to

anyone that is approached and asked for money.

He lives in squaller and runs a little restaurant that runs under management as he has no working permits to be directing

anything here on the island. I'm almost certain he doesn't pay any taxes to the authorities and is of absolutely no help to

the economy of Bali at all.

I think that most tourists are putting money into the economy of the island without any issues at all and while they are

here they spend heaps. The most of us that have a working visa and run small operations are generally doing it the right

way and following the laws to the letter, as without this method of operation, you simply cannot stay here as you are

breaking the law.

My advice to anyone who is thinking about coming here and working is to get the appropriate working permits and

visas and to do the right thing as far as the law goes. If you are on a retirement visa then you are retired. If you are on a

working permit then you are working as per your visa conditions and title and you must pay tax. The few low life scum

bags that run around trying to dodge the legal system on the island will end up getting caught and exposed for the scabs

they are.

Sorry to throw a negative taint up for the week readers but be aware there are a heap of people that just don't put in on

the island and treat it like some sort of drunken playground. I'm

certain the most of us do actually do the right thing and keep things all

above board.

In closing I will take my hat off to the powers that be on the island for

getting the toll road completed in such a fast fashion and think it is an

absolute asset to the island. It goes to show that the Balinese are really

trying to make the place that much better than anywhere else in the

world to visit, and at the end of the day why would you go anywhere

else.

Ok, on that note folks I will let you go for the week and trust that the

most of you stay safe, happy, healthy and always remember, The

truth of the matter is that you always know the right thing to do. The

hard part is doing it.

Enjoy Your Week, ALIASJ………………….

Deeper Insights NeededLegislators Joining Demand for Complete Disclosure on Police's Failure to Install US$5.8 million in X-ray Detectors at Bali Seaports

It remains unclear when and where X-ray machines that cost the province of Bali more than Rp. 58 bi l l ion (US$5.8 million) and have sat idle for more than six months will be installed by police at the ports of P a d a n g B a i a n d Gilimanuk.

T h e B a l i P o s t quotes a community leader in Bali, Nyoman Sentana, who said that the state of continuing uncertainty over the X-ray machines was proof of a l a c k o f s e r i o u s commi tment by the provincial government to keeping Bali safe.

He continued, the international standard of security for Bali sought by the Governor remains little more than lip service, pointing to the high rate of crime and the failure to install security equipment, such as the X-ray machines.

Sentana, who is chairman of the United People of Badung (Forum Masyarakat Badung Bersatu), said the governor's policy should be pursued and supported by the legislature.

“When will the X-rays be o p e r a t i n g ? W h a t ' s t h e impediment? This must be answered by the Governor, the Legislature and the Police. Let's not let the international standard of security envisioned by the

Governor only become an empty s logan or become politicized,” demanded Sentana.

Separately, the chairman of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representatives (DPRD-Bali), Nyoman Parta, questioned the reluctance of legislators to take a

firm stand on the long-delayed introduction of the X-ray devices. He called on lawmakers to immediately summon the police and provincial officials who managed the bidding process for the X-rays to uncover the true facts of the case.

“The legislature is reluctant to take a stance in the problem of the X-ray. I hope that this matter can be quickly resolved,” said Parta. Parta's comments were made on Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at a session of the DPRD-Bali to review a special report on the implementation of the 2012 provincial budget.

Spotlighting the continuing delay in deploying the X-ray

machines, Parta stressed the important role to be played by the devices in safeguarding Bali. He said it was time to determine if the machines somehow failed to meet the o r ig ina l tender documents, if there was a lack of funds to install the X-rays or the

problem was a lack of trained personnel to operate the equipment.

Meanwhile, the s e c r e t a r y o f Commission I of the D P R D - B a l i , D e w a Nyoman Rai, said the security of Bali must remain a top priority, especially on the eve of the APEC Summit to be held in Bali in October. Said Rai: “The provision o f the X- ray was budgeted for Rp. 58 b i l l i o n a n d t h e equipment is already h e r e b u t n o t y e t installed. We want to

know why they have not been installed. We want this matter implemented as Rp. 58 billion is a large sum of money.”

D e w a R a i i s a l s o questioning the sophistication of the new x-ray equipment, which, according to tests by the police, takes 10-15 minutes to inspect a single vehicle. Many in the legislator see the inspection process as taking too much time. One legislator, Gusti Made Suryanta Putra, is openly alleging the new X-ray machines are not the latest models and are already out-of-date.

Bali Press Reveals Local Businessman Who Invited Christiano Ronaldo to Bali at a 'Mangrove Ambassador' is Also Behind Controversial Plans to Reclaim Part of Benoa Bay Mangrove Area

DenPost quotes Professor Dr. I Gusti Bagus Wijaya Kusuma, chairman of the Center for Industrial and Energy Research at Bali's Udayana University, as a l leg ing tha t we l l known Indonesian businessman Tommy Winata is behind controversial plans to reclaim portions of Benoa Bay's mangrove forest.

Winata, an Indonesian businessman with various hotel and property holdings including the Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel, is also the founder of the Artha Graha Peduli Foundation .

Professor Wijaya also told the press how in 2009 he was approached by a Dutch investor working with Indonesian interests and asked to prepare a study supporting the creation of man-made island in Benoa Bay. The well-know academic told DenPost that he adamantly rejected he o ffer, conv inced that the reclamation project would destroy the environment and cause hardships on the public. “At the time, I refused the offer to undertake a study because the reclamation will cause great damage,” explained Professor Wijaya Kusuma.

Professor Wijaya said the

areas targeted for reclamation involves Pulau Penyu and Pulau Pudut. These areas are slated for r e c l a m a t i o n f o r t h e development of a new tourism zone comprising an F-1 race circuit and accommodation services.

“Before it was called the 'Bali Marina Complex'

that would have a race circuit resembling F-1 in Monaco. The F-1 circuit will be located within the complex surrounded by a tourism development. This is a good concept, but why reclaim ocean areas that still are home to mangrove trees? Will they cut down the mangrove trees? If this is their plan, they could do this at Serangan Island. What's more, the reclamation project at Serangan is currently stuck,” said Wijaya.

Tsunami Barriers?Wijaya quest ions the

emergence of PT Tirta Wahanan Bali International who have c o m m i s s i o n e d a s t u d y undertaken by a division of Bali's Udayana University. That study, according to the Professor, portrays the proposed reclaimed islands as tsunami barriers, a fact the academic finds peculiar given that Benoa Bay is an area much less at risk to tsunami that other areas of Bali, such as North Bali, the western side of Bali's airport and Tuban.

Claiming arguments put forth by investors of creating tsunami barriers is merely window dressing, Wijaya adds: “That reason is not logical, There are many hidden plans by investors. Don't let the public be fooled by the investor's plans.”

Separately, The Jakarta Post reports that the company proposing to develop the reclaimed islands that will absorb

between 400 to 600 hectares of Bali's Southern Mangrove Forest is PT Tirta Wahana International, a company The Jakarta Post claims manages the Discovery Shopping Mall and Discovery Kartika Plaza in Bal.

A r t h a G r a h a P e d u l i Foundation - a foundation connected with Tommy Winata and the Discovery Kartika Plaza recently bestowed the title of Mangrove Ambassador on C h r i s t i a n o R o n a l d o a n d coordinated the tree planting ceremony attended by the Soccer Icon and Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

A 73-page feasibility study prepared by a component of Udayana University reportedly supports PT Tirta Wahana's plans to reclaim areas of Benoa harbor. The new islands would be accessible via the new Benoa – Nusa Dua toll way. The report is said to defend the project claiming the new islands will provide tsunami protection and would not n e g a t i v e l y i m p a c t B a l i ' s ecosystem.

The Udayana feasibility study, however, is currently not available for review by the general public.

The governor is said to support the reclamation project, but promises to convene a blue ribbon committee of academics and community leaders to review the reclamation and development plan.

Opposed to the reclamation plan, the chairman of the Friends of the Earth (WALHI-Bali), Wayan “Gendo” Suardana points to the disastrous results of the failed reclamation project at nearby Serangan Island, seen by WAHLI as causing great damage to Bali's environment.

BALI LOCATION TO SUIT EVERYONE

Sanur is a town on the east coast of South Bali.

Sanur is Bali's oldest upscale resort area and is a mature beach-side town. Despite the abundance of restaurants and

accommodation, it has a quiet and relaxed feel to it. In general terms, it is more expensive than Kuta but cheaper than Sem inyak . Sanu r tends to appeal most to middle-aged and older families, especially Europeans.

T h e S a n u r area is sandwiched between the main Jalan Ngurah Rai bypass and the beach. One main route called J a l a n D a n a u Tamblingan runs north to south through the

town and it is easy to orient yourself with reference to this road.

Sanur (Indonesian:Pantai Sanur, pronounced sah-noor) is a coastal stretch of beach of Denpasar city of southeast Bali,

about 30 minutes drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport, which has grown into a little town in its own right. a 5.1 ki lometers of the Sanur 's coastline from Matahari Terbit Beach to Mertasari Beach has been ready reclaimed in 2008.

The northern part of Sanur beach was used as the landing site for the Dutch invasion troops during the Dutch intervention in Bali (1906). During World War II, Sanur was again the entry point through which the Japanese forces landed to occupy the island of Bali.

Today Sanur contains a number of hotel resorts such as the Medina and Bali Hyatt (not to be confused with the Grand Hyatt in Nusa Dua). Sanur is also home to a growing number of popular villa resorts, such as The Aleesha Villas.

Moderate Earthquake Startles Bali and East Java Residents on Monday, July 8, 2013

Vandals have struck the church connected to the City Beach priest involved in this week's lost bracelet scandal.

Rev. Terry McAuliffe, the Anglican priest who found a $6500 gold and diamond bracelet in a car park, gave the jewellery back to its original owners after a public backlash and scathing condemnation from his Archbishop.

B u t v a n d a l s scrawled graffiti on the walls St Paul's Anglican Church in City Beach and a brick was thrown t h rough t he f r on t window.

"Thieves preach here," was painted on one wall.

But after telling them he was now the bracelet's legal owner, Mr McAuliffe said he would give it to Mr and Mrs Bevan if they made a

A r c h b i s h o p H e r f t apologised on behalf of the diocese to "all who have been deeply distressed by the actions of the priest".

Mr McAuliffe, who said he was a personal injury lawyer until 1988, gave the bracelet to the Bevans.

He apologised to the couple and said that on reflection he realised he had made a mistake.

"I was caught up in the legal niceties a n d t h e v e r y i n t e r e s t i n g l e g a l question under the statute," he said. "That is a bit of a failing of mine because of many years of legal training.

"I tend to get excited and interested in that to the exclusion of the people.

" T h e y w e r e r e a l l y distressed and it was not fair of me to put them through that."

Mr Bevan said they were relieved and delighted to have the bracelet back and made a $500 donation to Mr McAuliffe's church.

KUTA WEEKLYREAL ESTATE GUIDEREAL ESTATE

As a foreigner, there is a number of ways that can lead to you owning your dream property in Bali.

The best option for you will depend on your personal situation, the type of property, risk factors and the type of investment model.Even though it states in Indonesian law that foreigners are not allowed to hold a 'freehold' land title, there are ways that have been in practice for a number of years that enable foreigners to control a freehold title indirectly or to hold a leasehold title in their own name.

RIGHT OF USE (HAK PAKAI)This is the right of use over

state-owned (crown land) or property owned by public or private persons/entities for a specific purpose for (generally) a finite period and occasionally for an indefinite period. This land right may not be sold, exchanged or transferred unless explicitly state in an agreement.

Hak pakai may be held by and Indonesian individual or entity.

Or foreigner permanently domiciled in Indonesia, or a foreign legal entity with a representative office in Indonesia such as foreign Banks, embassies, etc.

NOMINEE SYSTEM FOR HAK MILIK

This structure is a regularly practiced procedure in Indonesia, whereby the foreigner nominates and Indonesian representative to acquire the land and to hold the 'freehold' title (Hak Milik) on behalf of the foreigner.

Ownership of the land is transferred from the previous owner to the Indonesian nominee.

The foreigner and the Indonesian nominee then sign an agreement which recognizes the Indonesian nominee as the legal owner of the property whilst declaring the foreigner as the rightful owner of the property. This agreement denotes that the Indonesian nominee will carry out any directives from the foreigner regarding the land. This agreement must always be concluded in the presence of a public notary.

The inventor of Vaseline claimed that he ate a spoonful of it every morning!

Robert Chesebrough patented petroleum jelly, a product derived from material found in oil rigs, in 1872.

He dubbed his new creation “Vaseline” and marketed it as a miracle cure. He would claim that applying Vaseline to your skin could heal your injuries.

He traveled around New York doing demonstrations that involved pouring acid on himself, and using Vaseline to heal the wounds. He additionally included his or her physique with Vaseline, which usually he states relieved his or her torso aches and pains.

Royal Water Park at Tirta Gangga Offers – a Pause that Refreshes While Touring Bali's Northeast

Tirta Gangga, the water palace owned by the royal household of Karangasem, is located 83 kilometers northeast of Bali's capital of Denpasar and 6 kilometers north of Amlapura, the capital of the regency of Karangasem.

Beritabali.com reports that the complex was built in 1948, in the years following the end of World War II, on the initiative of the then king of Karangasem, Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem, as a place of rest and relaxation for his family.

Largely leveled by an eruption of Mt. Agung in 1963, the gardens have been lovingly restored to their original glory.

Built on the foothills of Bali's sacred Mount Agung, the Tirta Gangga Water Palace offers both a cooler locale and panoramic views across verdant rice terraces to the Indian Ocean in the distance.

The architecture of the water garden blends both Balinese and Chinese styles. Prior to the building of the water palace, the location was known as for its cool running waters that area residents believe were sacred, capable of being both physically and spiritually regenerative.

“Tirta” in ancient Sanskrit mean “water” while “Gangga” is linked to the sacred Ganges river of

India. Like its namesake, Tirta Gangga viewed as a source of holy water by Balinese Hindus and its waters are used for holy ceremonies at surrounding temples. In keeping with tradition, sacred water for ritual purposes must always be takes directly from the source, necessitating a hike through the nearby jungle.

Upon entering Tirta Gangga, visitors will see a large pool decorated with statuary. The statues of

B a l i n e s e G o d s a n d Goddesses keep watch, standing on platforms surrounded by water. Very large gold fish swim the cool waters, swimming up to the pool's edge to solicit food from visitors.

N e a r b y a l a r g e swimming pool provides inviting cool dips. Changing rooms are also available.

The entire complex covers 1.2 hectares broken into three parts, each at its own elevation.

The complex is home to three separate water sources. One provides the drinking water for the entire city of Amlapura, the remaining supplies of fresh water fill the pools and irrigate the surrounding rice fields.

Those wishing to linger at the pools can stay at nearby accommodation ranging from inexpensive guesthouses to more lavish villas adjacent to the complex.

California pot shop billed as world's largestA medical marijuana dispensary billed as the world's largest cannabis store may stay open while the city of Oakland fights a U.S. government effort to shut it down or seize the p r o p e r t y , a federa l judge ruled.

There has been a t u g o f w a r i n California between federal and local a u t h o r i t i e s o v e r cannabis sold for pu rpo r ted hea l t h reasons.

In February, M a g i s t r a t e MariaElena James, the same judge who cited the ruling, said the city had no right to i n t e r v e n e i n a f e d e r a l prosecutor's civilforfeiture action against the Harborside Health Center, which was featured on the Discovery Channel reality TV show "Weed Wars."

The city appealed the ruling, and James's latest order allows the dispensary to continue to sell marijuana to individuals c a r r y i n g a d o c t o r ' s recommendation while the appeal is under review. James

called the question of Oakland's legal standing in the case "a matter of significant public interest."

Attorney Cedric Chao, who is representing the city in the case, called the ruling "very significant."

" T h e c o u r t h a s recognized that Oakland has legitimate interests in protecting i ts res idents ' hea l th , in promoting public safety, and in protecting the integrity of its legislative framework for the regulation of medical cannabis," Chao said.

"Today's order, reminds us all that one of the strengths of our country is its independent judiciary."

Harborside's landlords have moved to evict the store under pressure from federal

prosecutors, who have threatened to seize the property as part of a U.S. government crackdown on what it deems to be illegal pot shops in California.

The city of Oakland in Oc tober sued the federa l government in an effort to allow

Harborside to continue selling marijuana to its 1 0 0 , 0 0 0 p a t i e n t s . O a k l a n d o f f i c i a l s warned that a shutdown would lead to a "health crisis."

The city expects to collect $1.4 million in medicalpot sales tax revenue this year.

A representative for the U.S. Attorney's Office in San Francisco

was not immediately available for comment.

Federal authorities in recent years have launched a crackdown in California and other states against what prosecutors consider an illegal network of cannabis suppliers established under state medical marijuana laws.

California was the first to legalize pot for medical purposes, and nearly 20 other states and the District of Columbia have enacted similar statutes, though marijuana is classified as an illegal narcotic under federal law.

They say, 'Hi, we're hookers! Do you want to have

KUTA WEEKLY IS NOW RECRUITING

11 Jul - 17 Jul 2013 (344)

Dear Martha,

I am 20 and have been in a relationship with my

boyfriend for 2 years. We met through my best friend

(his sister!), I live with her and my boyfriend lives in

Bali. This makes our relationship long distance for 6

months each year.

I really do genuinely enjoy his company, care about him

a lot and we have a lot of fun together but recently I

have been finding that I am becoming less attracted to him and am now becoming

uncomfortable with the sexual side of our relationship, and see him as more of a

good friend. I think I'm falling out of love with him. I've been thinking about

breaking up with him, but I'm scared that it will be a huge mistake!

Is this 'being uninterested' a phase that will just pass? Or is our relationship over?

And if so, how do I break up with him without sounding like a completely horrible

person that's wasted his time for two whole years, and still maintain a good

friendship with his sister?

Beccy

Dear Beccy,

Is the relationship over? Probably. Is this phase just going to 'pass'. Doubt it. Are you

making a horrible mistake? Probably not.

It's true, love changes when you have been with someone a while. The high-pitched

enthusiasm of first love tends to fade. After this people either decide they are happy

where they are and continue with the relationship or they realise the person they fell in

love with is not actually a magical mythical creature as first thought, and they move on.

Relationships can go through phases but if you are lacking interest now you have to

appreciate how much harder it will be to maintain interest in another 10 years.

It is hard to let go of someone you have cared about but it's no use to anyone struggling

on with a relationship at your age when you have changed feelings.

It is also always better to end it before you end up falling for someone else.

You're not a horrible person for falling out of love. It happens. And while relationships

can shift over time you still need to have a certain charge, a certain desire to be with

someone. If it's not there then there's no shame in letting go, especially when you are free

of other commitments like shared finances and children.

Be honest with your friend - his sister. Tell her you've fallen out of love and don't want to

hurt him but you have to be honest about your feelings.

People are usually hurt for a time in these situations dear. Expect that. But if you have

integrity and you are honest and upfront everyone should get over it in the end.

Martha

The Western Bulldogs have held off Greater Western Sydney by four points at Manuka Oval on Saturday afternoon to keep the Giants winless for the season.

The Giants led at various stages during the match but could not finish their opponents off, and a four goal to three final quarter by the Dogs secured a 13.9 (87) to 12.11 (83) victory.

Brendan McCartney's men were comfortable winners at the clearances, stoppages, contested possessions and forward 50 entries, but they still had to fight hard to get the four points.

The Western Bulldogs' Michael

Talia told Grandstand that the coach's half-time message had been to maintain intensity at the contests to get the better of the Giants.

"This year we haven't had a lot of four-quarter efforts," Talia said.

"Today we kept grinding away,

contest by contest over four quarters.

"Eventually it paid dividends in the end (for us)."

The Giants led by a point at half-time, and after an up and down third quarter they were still two points in front with one term to go.

Goals to Liam Jones a n d v e t e r a n D a n i e l Giansiracusa put the Bulldogs 10 points clear in time on, then Will Hoskins-Elliott kicked a goal at the 32-minute mark to

give the Giants hope, before the Dogs chopped off one last attack to seal the win.

Bulldogs beat GWS by four points at Manuka

The Tigers were well short of their best all day, as the Kangaroos blitzed them to seal a 19.14 (128) to 8.18 (66) win.

The match was over by half-time, after North Melbourne kicked eight goals to five behinds in the second term to lead by 53 at the long break.

For the Kangaroos, Brent Harvey (27 possessions, two goals) told Grandstand his team was happy with the win but that there was a lot more work to do.

"We can't get sucked into

talking finals yet," he said."We need to get to 8-8 and

then we can reassess a few things."We've still got a lot of hard

work to do but the boys played really

good today I thought."Richmond tried hard in the

second half but Brad Scott's men had all the answers, and when the Tigers did attack they were wasteful with their goalkicking.

Robbie Tarrant kicked four goals and Aaron Black three for the Kangaroos, while Jack Riewoldt, Steven Morris and Matt White had two each for Richmond.

The win keeps North Melbourne in touch with the top

eight, while Richmond missed a chance to move temporarily into the top four with the loss.

Aries – March 21 to April 20There's plenty happening on the home front as the New Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Mars shake up your domestic zone. You may decide to redecorate, renovate, move house or revitalize a stale relationship. Avoid stirring up a stressed relative though, as you're likely to get an angry response! Single Rams … love is likely with someone who's not your usual type.Taurus – April 21 to May 21Expect a busy week communication-wise as you talk, text, tweet or blog up a storm. The stars also encourage you to explore your neighborhood and become more involved in your local community. There are some fabulous new faces just waiting to meet you. Single Bulls – you could find love with someone you meet through a family member, friend or neighbor.

Gemini – May 22 to June 21The New Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Mars shine a spotlight on money matters. Don't just muddle through Twins! If your finances are in a mess, now's the time to develop some fiscal skills … hopefully with the guidance of a professional. The Sun and Mercury link up on Wednesday which favors communication, conversation, commerce, education and travel.

Cancer – June 22 to July 23Get ready for a full-on week Crabs, as five planets fire up your sign … and shake you out of your comfort zone! It's the perfect time to be proactive as you initiate an idea; start a project; update your appearance or head off in a completely new direction. Be inspired by Harrison Ford [born on July 13] “We all have big changes in our lives that are more or less a second chance.”

Leo – July 24 to August 23Don't be in such a hurry that you lose sight of where you're going. The New Moon stimulates your privacy zone, so slow down and contemplate where you're heading … and where you've been. Solitude is soul food for you at the moment as you slow down, calm down, re-charge and re-focus. Single Lions … love and travel are linked in unexpected ways.

Libra – September 24 to October 23Being laidback won't work this week Libra, as the New Moon encourages you to be your personal best and go for professional gold. Venus and Uranus also liven up your lackluster love life. If you're attached … plan to do something wildly exciting with your partner. Singles … don't play it safe. Look for love with a lusty Leo, an amorous Aries or an adventurous Aquarian.

Scorpio – October 24 to November 22It's time to travel, read, research or study as the New Moon stimulates your gypsy gene and boosts your brain power. You're impatient to find the answer to a puzzling problem, but don't step on other people's toes in the process. Strive to be more subtle. Single Scorpios … love and work are linked as you view a colleague, client or customer in a romantic new light.

Sagittarius – November 23 to December 21Over the next few months, some lucky Sagittarians will benefit from a pay rise, bonus, real estate sale, divorce settlement, superannuation payout, inheritance or bumper tax return. Just make sure you spend, save and invest any profits wisely. When dealing with a child, teenager or friend, resist the urge to jump to hasty conclusions. Check the facts thoroughly first.

Capricorn – December 22 to January 20If you channel all your energy into work-related projects then your close relationships will suffer. The New Moon urges you to nurture family and friends with the time and attention they deserve. If you are having ongoing problems with a loved one, be proactive about finding a solution. Clear communication and good listening skills are the secrets to a satisfying week.

Aquarius – January 21 to February 19Get creative Aquarius! Boredom is a big no-no this week, as you search out unusual people, places and activities. You'll favor excitement and novel ideas over your usual daily routine. When it comes to a financial matter or business deal be cautious, as the situation may not be as straight-forward as it seems. Don't put your head in the sand … do your homework.

Virgo – August 24 to September 23It's a wonderful week to re-formulate your goals for the future, as five planets activate your aspirations zone. Steer clear of negative thinkers. Make sure the people around you are a positive influence, as you surround yourself with family and friends who promote your talents and encourage your dreams. And that includes you Virgo … don't talk yourself down.

Pisces – February 20 to March 20Pliable Pisceans are keen to please this week but is that really such a good idea? If you adapt your plans and dilute your ideas too much, then there'll be nothing of you left in the mix. Heed the wise words of birthday great Bill Cosby “I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.” It's time for Fish to be strong, centered and focused.

It was released on July 18, 2006, by Jive Records as the lead single from the album. The song was co-written and produced by Timberlake, Timbaland, and Nate "Danja" Hills.

Discussing "SexyBack", Timberlake revealed that he went "left", singing the song in a rock style, not an R&B style. He described the song as musicians David Bowie and David Byrne "covering" James Brown's 1970 song "Sex Machine". The track features Timbaland on backing vocals, while Timberlake's voice is distorted. The instrumentation used in the song includes a pounding bass beat, electronic chords, and beat box sounds. "SexyBack" received mixed reception from critics.

"SexyBack" became Timberlake's first numberone single on the Billboard Hot 100, staying seven weeks at the top spot. It also topped several of Billboard magazine's other charts, including the BillboardPop 100, Hot Dance Airplay, and Hot Digital Songs charts, and entered the top ten on most singles charts. Internationally, it became Timberlake's first single to reach number one in the United Kingdom. In Australia, the track was Timberlake's second numberone single, spending two consecutive weeks at the top. "SexyBack" was certified threetimes platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and sixtimes platinum by Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA).

The track won Best Dance Recording at the 2007 Grammy Awards. In addition, the song won Timberlake the People's Choice Award for Favorite R&B song and the Male Artist of the Year at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. The music video was filmed in June 2006; Timberlake decided to work with director Michael Haussman based on the latter's work on Madonna's 1994 music video "Take a Bow".

Geelong beats Hawthorn at the MCGGeelong took its w i n n i n g s t r e a k against Hawthorn to 11 games with a hard - fought 10 -point victory at the MCG on Saturday night.

At the MCG the Cats led for all bar a minute or two of the match and withstood a stirring Hawks fightback in the final quarter to win 11.16 (82) to 10.12 (72).

The win continues the run of Hawthorn losses to Geelong - the last time the Hawks beat the Cats was the 2008 grand final - extending the so-called "Kennett curse" since comments by then-club president Kennett saying that the Hawks had the wood over their rivals.

The Cats' Mitch Duncan

told Grandstand he was still to lose to Hawthorn in his time at the club.

"They came back pretty hard at us, they're a good side and ... we stuck by it and got away with it (the win)," he said.

"We expected it, they (the Hawks) weren't going to die wondering ... we had to regroup and go back to basics and we did

that, I think that's what won us the game in the end."

Geelong led by 33 points early in the final quarter, but Hawthorn kicked five straight goals to close to within three points.

But young Geelong on-baller Josh Caddy kicked a goal from near the boundary to give the Cats breathing space, and they held on for the

win.Jordan Murdoch kicked

three goals for the Cats, while Jarrad Roughead and David Hale kicked two each for Hawthorn.

Geelong will be waiting for news of veteran Joel Corey, who was taken off the MCG on a motorised stretcher after being knocked out late in the game.

Late goal gives Eagles the win in AdelaideThe Crows led by 13 p o i n t s m i d w a y through the f inal q u a r t e r, b u t t h e Eagles kicked the last three goals of the match to win 11.9 (75) to 9.15 (69).

It was a games of swings and roundabouts - A d e l a i d e c a m e o u t strongly in the opening quarter, kicking the first three goals of the game, but the visitors turned things around to lead by seven points at quarter time.

The Crows pushed back in the second term and led by seven points at the half, but the Eagles responded in the third quarter and led by nearly two goals before the Crows brought the lead back to two points with a quarter to go.

Adelaide had chances to

establish a game-winning lead early in the final quarter, but a missed shot at goal and three rushed behinds hurt the home side as West Coast did what was required in time on to seal the win.

Kennedy kicked four for West Coast, while Tom Lynch and Jason Porplyzia had two each for Adelaide.

Kennedy told Grandstand it was a great feeling to get a win

after a number of close losses.

"I think the effort the last two weeks has really been there, but we didn't get the four points," he said.

"The same thing was happening (tonight), we've seen it happen and it was a great effort by the boys just to grind away and keep at it.

"It went down to the final siren and it was great to get the four points."Kennedy praised the work

of veteran Andrew Embley, who had a big impact when he came on as a substitute in the second half.

" E m b l e y ' s t e r r i f i c , absolutely," he said.

“It was tiring out there, and for him to come out and do what he did was inspirational."

Profanity earns place in dictionaryT h e E n g l i s h p r o f a n i t y "shitstorm" is so widely used by G e r m a n s , i n c l u d i n g Chancellor Angela Merkel, that the country's most p r e s t i g i o u s dict ionary has included it in its latest edition.

"Over the last few years, 'shitstorm' has entered everyday usage so that's why it now appears in the new printed edition of the dictionary," said Nicole Weiffen, head of communications at D u d e n , w h i c h p u b l i s h e s Germany's standard dictionary.

"It is used in a lot of print and online media as well as in a whole host of other contexts so it is really

relevant for the German language now," she said.

The latest edition of the Duden dictionary defines the word as "a storm of indignation expressed via the internet, sometimes accompanied by offensive comments."

That varies slightly from the English meaning, with the Oxford English Dictionary,

which defines s h i t s t o r m a s " a situation marked by violent controversy".

Asked last year if i t w a s w o r t h considering whether internet users should have some kind of driving license, Merkel said: "Yes but I won't make any suggestions here. Otherwise we'll g e t a ' s h i t s t o r m ' tomorrow."

The word was named "Anglicism of the Year" by a panel of language experts in 2011, who said it "filled a gap in the German language".

Germans also use the word "candystorm" to refer to an outpouring of approval for public figures. That word has yet to enter the Duden dictionary.

Trent Merrin relieved at finally getting a Game III call-up

team as the best I can."Merrin says it will be a

welcome relief to spend the next 10 days in camp with the squad and help take his mind off the poor NRL form of the Dragons, who are battling to avoid the wooden spoon for the first time as a joint-venture.

The 24-year-old played in last Saturday's 36-0 hammering by the Sydney Roosters and said it was a difficult result to digest.

Steve Price's side were held scoreless at Kogarah Oval for the second successive game.

"It's nice to get away, freshen

Trent Merrin admits he was a nervous man on Sunday before being n a m e d i n L a u r i e Daley's NSW side for the State of Origin series decider against Queensland.

Merrin has been part of the Blues set-up since 2011 but has faced the heartbreak of being overlooked for game three of the last two series, despite having played in the first two encounters.

The St George Illawarra forward admits he now feels more confident of his role in the team and says the July 17 encounter at a sold out Olympic stadium will be one of the highlights of his career.

"I've been waiting for this and I am there now and really humbled to get the call," Merrin said.

"I wasn't over confident to be honest, but I had faith in Loz (Daley) and the structure of where he wanted to go and am ready to do my job for the

up a b i t and surround yourself by some new faces and take your mind off club footy," he said.

"My focus is on Origin and how we can e n d t h i s r u n t h a t Queensland are on."

In addit ion to appeasing the angst of the whole state, Merrin says there is a real d e s i r e a m o n g t h e players to repay the faith

shown in them by Daley, whose relaxed approach has made him a very popular figure among his squad.

"We want to win it for the state 100 per cent, everyone is on the same page here," he said.

"The boys have great respect for Laurie and all the coaching staff and we'd love to give them success.

“We just have to repeat what we did in game one. It would be an amazing feeling to be part of a NSW side who finally won a series."

Missing remains found 28 years laterThe remains of a New York schoolteacher who disappeared nearly 28 years ago have been discovered hidden in a false basement wall in the house where she l i v e d w i t h h e r husband, police said.

JoAnn Nichols was 55 years old when her husband James reported her missing i n 1 9 8 5 , p o l i c e i n Poughkeepsie, New York, said. He died in December of natural causes, they added.

The remains were found when a contractor was asked to clean out t h e w o o d f r a m e d h o u s e i n Poughkeepsie, about 65 miles north of New York City. The house was filled with hoarded items and garbage, they said.

The remains were identified as belonging to the missing woman through dental records.

James Nichols told detectives he last saw his wife when he left for work at IBM in December 1985, according to Poughkeepsie Journal archives.

Her body was discovered wrapped in a sheet and plastic bag, tied with rope and placed in a foetal position inside a plastic container that was found in a false wall, said Kari Reiber, the county's medical examiner.

The location where she was found was enclosed, which might have helped hide the body's existence, she said.

"There might have not been any odour, even if she was there for a long time," Reiber said.

An autopsy revealed that Nichols, who taught first grade, died of blunt head trauma, Reiber said.

"She was struck in the head," she said. "It is being ruled a homicide."

After Nichols went missing, her husband was never ruled out as a suspect, said Poughkeepsie Police Captain Paul Lecomte.

Nichols taught her last class on December 20, 1985, when school let out for the winter holidays. The next day, she failed to show up for a salon appointment, according to the local newspaper's archives.

The couple had one child, who drowned at age 25, three y e a r s b e f o r e N i c h o l s ' disappearance.

100kg orang-utan on strict dietAn obese orang-utan has been put on a strict diet by Malaysian wildlife authorities after two decades of gorging on junk food handed out by tourists.

J a c k i e reportedly weighs 100kg twice the normal weight of an adult female in the rich jungle habitats of Borneo island.

Rewards for highflying petsOur love of travelling with Pooch or Puss has led to one of Austra l ia 's leading airlines offering, wait for it ... frequent flyer points for highflying cats and dogs.

Virgin Australia Velocity members can earn points when they travel with their pet.

Celebrity vet Dr Chris Brown says it shows that pets are flying more.

"Our pets are having a bigger role to play in our lives so it's p r o b a b l y f u r t h e r recognition of that," he told said.

More people are holidaying with pets, he said, moving interstate with them and even f l y i n g t h e m f o r specialist medical care.

"More and more we see them as being fu l ly f ledged fami ly members as opposed to the dog or the cat that used to just hang out in the backyard and we'd feed it table scraps," Dr Brown said.

Virgin Australia is the first Australian airline to award points to pets, in a move that will surely please four-legged fiends. The announcement was made on Monday at Virgin's Sydney Domestic Airport checkin counter, where cats and dogs donned purple stewards' scarves.

Nearly 30,000 pets travel domestically with Virgin Australia every year, and Velocity Frequent Flyer CEO Neil Thompson said pet points was the next step in the airline's family focus.

"Sometimes it's the simplest things that really strike a chord with members," he said.

So how does it work? When you book the flight for your pet, you provide your Velocity membership number and then that flight will earn you 300 points, regardless of where in Australia your pet is flying.

The program only applies to dogs (all breeds) and cats, as there is a different registration process for other travelling pets deemed more exotic.

The popularity of going on holidays with pets has been steadily rising in the industry and many tourism operators have reacted to this by switching to petfriendly accommodation. More "pet resorts" are opening and many hotels now offer pet packages.

Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast offers the "Palazzo Pooch Package" for "Very Important Pooches".

"Equipped with a canine couture designer pet bed and Versace crystal food and water bowls, your Superior Pet Room will provide the ultimate indulgent getaway in true Versace style," reads the hotel's website.

A petsitting service is also available if you want to pop out to a restaurant that isn't as welcoming of your furry family member.

Sydney pet owner Garry Dryburgh travels up to four times a year with his poodle and Shetland sheepdog to attend domestic dog shows.

He thinks frequent flyer points for pets is a great idea.

"When kennelling is so expensive and so difficult, and

there 's more pet f r iend ly accommodation, it's great to take your pet away on a holiday with you," Dryburgh said.

His advice to other pet owners "Don't worry about it. Dogs are fine. They've got their own personal space in the aircraft."

Dr Brown, who's flown with his nineyearold kelpie Rusty, has had tips for reducing a pet's stress when travelling.

Put your pet in the back of a car at night and go for a drive for half an hour, Dr Brown suggested. Take note of how your pet responds to not being able to see what's happening outside.

If they're fine, they'll likely cope well on a flight too, he said. If they're not, they can be given medication to help them relax, and it's worth getting them used to small trips, he said.

T h e r e a r e a couple of reasons Dr Brown thinks so many Aussies holiday with their pets, one being that animal lovers worry about how their pets will be without them.

A lot of pets and owners suffer from separation anxiety, said Dr Brown, and they don't want to be leaving their pets back at home.

"They see their pets as being as important as other family members so they can't see why they shouldn't be holidaying with us," he added.

"I laugh now when I'm at work and I see the names that people call pets and that's probably the best indication of all, the fact that they're now family members."

No longer do dogs and cats share names like Spot, Rover and Scruffy. Now, they're given human names, like Chloe, Max or even an indulgent Moet or Coco.

Travelling with your pet has just become even more rewarding, with Virgin Australia now offering frequent flyer points for cats and dogs.

Sinkhole swallows car, driver climbs out

A sinkhole swallowed a car as it was traveling down a street in Toledo, Ohio, and the 60yearold driver climbed out of the hole using a ladder supplied by rescue workers, a fire department spokesman said.

A water main break or heavy rains may have caused the sinkhole to open up under the street as the woman was driving down it, fire department Lieutenant Tom Kuhman said.

"She saw the car in front of her kind of almost go in but her car, being already in motion, was unable to avoid it," he said.

The hole was at least 8 feet deep "and quite large," he said. The woman was unhurt and climbed out of the hole using a

ladder, helped by a fire-fighter.Mayor Mike Bell said it would take city crews four or five days to

repair the road.

A man found guilty of sodomising a young girl has died after swallowing a cyanide tablet moments after the verdict was handed down.

According to reports in the United States, Steve Parsons had a seizure in the Nodaway County Court last week after the jury found him guilty of the statutory sodomy of a 14yearold girl.

The 48yearold from Missouri was rushed to hospital but died. The coroner found evidence of cyanide poisoning in the body.

Investigators searched Mr Parsons' car and found a contact number for a business. Inquiries showed Mr Parsons had ordered 100g of cyanide and had it sent to his business by overnight delivery. He was the owner of Parsons Tire in Maryville.

He was facing a sevenyear jail term."I can't speculate to what he was going

through but I'm firmly convinced that his death was not a result of a wrongful verdict by the jury," Gentry County Prosecuting Attorney Gerry Biggs said.

Harry O'Brien battling 'personal demons' as he returns to Collingwood training

Collingwood defender Harry O'Brien has asked for privacy while he deals with "significant personal demons" after returning to training at the AFL club.

He says he i s b a t t l i n g depression and the club's reported internal problems are "secondary" to h i s p e r s o n a l issues, and says he has personal knowledge of a 2011 murder in Brazil but cannot report it as he f e a r s f o r h i s safety.

O'Brien was left out of the Magpies side to face Carlton last Friday because of an ankle problem, b u t r e p o r t s emerged that the defender had clashed with coach Nathan Buckley mid-week at a team meeting.

The premiership-winning All-Australian was granted personal leave and made his return to the training ground this morning.

When asked about what happened in the team meeting, O'Brien demanded the media "give him space" as he deals with a host of issues from his past.

"It's been a tough couple of days. I'm not going to go

through what actually happened ... but I can go through my experience," he said.

"I'm going through quite a tough time at the moment so I just ask you guys for your sensitivity to that.

"I've gone through issues that I've put in the past for a long t i m e i n c l u d i n g a v e r y complicated history of sexual abuse, suicide, depression, seeing someone get murdered, knowing who murdered that person, not being able to say anything because that person will probably murder you.

"I've put that stuff to the past and when the time comes right, I will open up about these issues.

"But this is my personal experience and I have to do this

in the public eye and it's really tough. So if you guys can give me a bit of space because I'm going through this real stuff here and it's really tough.

Collingwood demanded O'Brien return to the club today and has reportedly told the

player he has to keep a n y e m o t i o n a l outbursts in check.

"The c lub ' s been fantastic in supporting me and protecting me and they've tried to do that," O'Brien said this morning.

"[They are] my demons that I have to face and I have to do that in the public eye and I just rattle off those issues and there's even more I d o n ' t f e e l c o m f o r t a b l e i n sharing."

Co l l ingwood ass i s tan t coach

Rodney Eade backed coach Buckley's stance on Monday night.

" I t ' s great because (O'Brien) is a quality player and it's good he will be back," Eade told Fox Footy's AFL 360.

"Nathan is an extremely strong individual and very team-oriented. Everything is about the team and the club first, second and third.

“Everyone knows what direction we are going in and I h a v e e v e r y c o n f i d e n c e everyone is on board."
