Office DesignSite Location : Saket Complex , New Delhi , India

We need to experience architecture by sensing its spaces, listening to it, touching it and even sitting quietly inside buildings with our eyes closed, but our minds’ eyes wide open. So, Sensing Spaces is about how architecture confronts us and com-municates with us on an emotional and psychological as well as visual and intellec-tual level. It’s about visitors experiencing real spaces rather than staring at iconic images of famous buildings. Architecture moves us , it elicits different emotions , it can bring back memories , but it also elic-its direct emotions. Architectural spaces have certain atmospheres which influence the emotional state of a person , the inter-action between the environment and its occupant.

What is emotion ? > ‘‘ Almost everyone except the psy-chologist knows what an emotion is’’

The word emotion is often applied to a wide variety of phenomena , such as passions,sentiments,temperament and moods. Although these words regurlalrly used interchangebaly , they do in fact refer to specific and different experie-mental phenomena .People differ with respect to their emo-tional responses towards a given build-ing. Nevertheless, in spite of these interper-sonal difference , the process model of emotions i.e. the way in emotions are elicted, is universal.

The emotion sensed while being there were claustrophobic , relief and inviting. These emotions can vary person-to-per-son. While there was a clear transition of a inviting space and a claustrophobic space.I picked up the emotion ‘Inviting’ and started working towards it.

2D Abstractions

On the based of sensing the emotions multiple 2-D Abstractions were drawn.Out of all these two suited best to the site.

Three key variables are identified in the basic model: apri-sal, concern and stimulus .The basic model of emotions applies to all human emotions..

•a stimulus elicits an emotion when it is appraised as either harmful or beneficial for one of our con-cerns.

The school infrastructure is designed in a way that the children could have opportunity to learn through playing. The school building itself acts as a learning aid. The architecture is such that it attracts children towards the school, promotes activities and increases peer learning opportunities by making the whole campus a child friendly one. Special care is taken to monitor and maintain -Right LightingClean and comfortable air qualitySafety and securitySound acousticsAnthropological and social aspects of class rooms and transi-tional spacesSensory stimulation harmony through use of colourful patterns on walls and floorsSupervisable circulation spaces (such as hallways and corridors)
