The text is for questions 9 to 12

9. The text is about....

A. body responses to touches

B. the heart movement

C. the blood pressure

D. touch communication

E. hormones of touches

10. Why does touch benefit our cardiovascular system?

A. It prevents a heart attack.

B. It reduces the heart rate when we are stressed.

C. It improves the fat level of the blood.

D. It normalizes the heart pressure.

E. It raises our blood pressure.

11. Recent studies show that...

A. touch is an equally effective means of communication as speech

B. communications through touch is more difficult than communication through speech.

C. communication through touch is more difficult than communication throug facial expressions.

D. speech communication is easier than touch communication

E. communication through touch is more complex than others

Our body is covered by skin. It is a part of our bodies that feels and responds to touch.

Touch reduces our stress responses:' the excess of the stress hormones cortisol, adrenalin and asrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is reduced, our heart rate slows, our blood pressure drops and ultimately our cardiovascular system benefits.

Our level of oxytocin- a natural peptide which promotes bonding- increases.

The orbital frontal cortex of our brain is activated- the same area that acknowledged pleasure when we're exposed to pleasant smells like perfume or our favourite desserts.

We understand other people better if we touch them: recent studies have shown that communication through touch is as complex and nuanced as communication through speech and facial expressions.

Photosynthesis is the process for converting solar energy to chemical energy and storing

it in bonds of sugar. this process occurs in plants and some algae (kingdom protista). Plants only

need solar energy, CO2, and H20 to make sugar. The process of photosynthesis takes in the

chloroplast, specifically using chlorophyll, the green pigment involved in photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis takes place primarily in plant leaves and little to none occurs in stems, etc.

the parts of a typical leaf include the upper and lower of epidermis, the mesophyll, the vasular

bundle(s) (veins), and the stomates. the upper and lower epidermal cell do not have chloroplasts,

thus primarily as protection for the rest of the leaf. the stomates are holes which occur primarily

in the lower epidermis and are for air exchange: they let CO2 in and O2 out. The vascular

bundles or veins in a leaf are part of the plant's transportation system, moving water and

nutrientss around the plant as needed. the mesophyll cells have chloroplasts and this is where

photosynthesis occurs.

A you hopefully recall, the parts of a chloroplast include the outer and inner membranes,

intermembrane spac, stroma and thylakoids stacked in grana. the chlorophyll is built into the

membranes of the thylakoids.

Chlorophyll look green because it absorbs the red and blue light, making these colours

invisible to the naked eye, it is the green light which is not absorbed that finally reaches our eyes,

making chlorophyll appear green. However, it is the energy from the red and blue light that are

absorbed that is, thereby, able to be used to do photosynthesis. The green light we can see is not

absorbed by the plant and thus cannot be used to do photosynthesis.

Page 6: Kumpulan Soal SMA Kelas 12

13.What is the function of the upper and lower epidermis?

A. To get CO2 in and O2 out.

B. To enable photosynthesis

C. To absorb leaf green lights

D. To protect the rest of the leaf

E. To transport the nutrient

14. What is the main idea of paragraph 4?

A. The plans can be colourful in absorbiuing the photosynthesis process

B. Photosynthesis needs absorption of colours

C. The energy to do photosynthesis is provided not by the green light

D. Chlorophyll enables photaosynthesis to absorb colours

E. Photosynthesis process gives colours to the plants.

15. What caused the disaster to the human race after the Toba eruption?

A. The severe drop in global temperature

B. The stratospheric sulfuric acid

C. The sulfur gases

D. The magma and the pulverized rock

E. The eruption of the mountains in Sumatra

Toba Eruption

Approximately 74.000 years ago on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, a violent volcanic eruption occured, thich proved to be apocalyptic for the human race. Scientists estimate that the eruption mayhave ejected up to 6.000 kmof magma and pulverized rock and sufficient sulfur gases tao form 5.000 megatons of stratospheric sulfuric acid aerosols. the suspension of so much material in the earth's atmosphere resulted in a volcanic winter that lasted all year long, every year for several years. The severe drop in global temperatures had catastropchic effects on vegetation and the food chain dependent upon it for survival - including humans.

Scientis have examined the genetic codes of seemingly disparate and distant races of people and found there's actuallyvery little genetic variablitiy in the entire human race. The evidence indicates that an unknown event affected the human gen pool approximately 74,000 yearsago whereonly very few humans remained alive on the planet (say 5,000 to 10,000) and the current population has grown from these selectively few genotypes. our existence in such great numbers today (over 6 billion strong) is a testament ot our tenacious ability to survive.

Page 7: Kumpulan Soal SMA Kelas 12

16. What was the most distinctive ijmpact of the Toba eruption around 74,000 year ago?

A. The extinction of the human race in Sumatra

B. The extinction of vegation and food chains

C. Volcanic winter every year fior several years

D. The rain of stratospheric sulfuric acid

E. The 6,000 km of magma coering the island of Sumatra.

A big secret that cell phone companies have been keeping from the world is that a cell phone is

nothing more than a radio. It is a complex radio, but still a radio. In order to really understand the way a

cell phone works, we must discuss some of the cell phones history for just a moment.

The technology behind cells have changed dramatically over the years, just as cell phones have,

but now most standard cells are about 10 square miles large. They are usually in the shape of hexagon.

Nowadays, every individual cell has its own base station, rather than only one for an entire city. And now

cell phones are made to be low-power wattage than in past decades. This means that the same frequency

can be used in the same city, at the same time, but in different cells.

How a cell phone carrier controls the frequency like an ice cube tray. The cell phone transmitting

towers don’t spill their transmissions that far out of their own cells. They may spill slightly in the most

adjacent cells, but not into cells more than one cell away. Usually each separate carrier has their own

control office in each major urban area called the Mobile Telephone Switching Office (MTSO). This is

where they control their respective towers. This office also connects all of the cell phone calls to the land-

line phones.

Each modern cell phone has special codes programmed into it. The most important code is the

system identification code or the SID. It’s five digit code which the FCC allocates to each different cell

phone carrier. When a cell phone is turned on, whether it’s making a call or not, it’s picking up the SID

that is being transmitted from the closest cell-phone tower. The phone’s personal carrier is also

transmitting its SID to the phone on specific channels that the phone programmed to listen for.

17. The text mostly talks about ….

A. What the big secret of cell phone is

B. How cell phones were invented

C. how technology has changed life

Page 8: Kumpulan Soal SMA Kelas 12

D. how cell pones work

E. Why people should use cell phones

18. By using the SID, what happens to the cell phone when it is turned on?

A. It connects all of the cell phone calls to the land-lines phones

B. It gives code to each different cell phone carrier

C. It picks up the SID transmitted from the closest cell phone tower

D. It transmits its SID to the phone on specific channels

E. It finds the phone and connects to it by finding a common frequency.

19. “The cell phone transmitting towers don’t spill their transmission that far out their own cells.”

(Paragraph 3)

The underlined word has the similar meaning to ….

A. broadcasting

B. receiving

C. transferring

D. sending

E. communicating

When the fossils fuels, or other fuels, such as wood or peat, are burned, carbon dioxide is released

in the atmosphere. Vehicles also give out and add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.

Earth’s atmosphere allows most of the sun rays to pass through it to heat Earth’s surface. Earth reflects

much of the heat energy back into the atmosphere, but much of this reflected radiation cannot escape.

Gases such as carbon dioxide absorb it. They grow warm and send heat radiation back to Earth. This is the

greenhouse effect. Many scientists think that the greenhouse effect may change the climate, over the

next 100 years or so. One consequences of so called “global warming” resulting from the greenhouse

effect could be melting of the polar ice caps. This, in turn, could lead to a rise in sea level which could

floor large areas of highly populated coastal land.

If carbon dioxide proves to be as harmful as thought, in order to reduce carbon dioxide levels we need to

reduce the amounts of carbon-rich fuels burned.

20. The text above tells about….

A. Fossil fuels

Page 9: Kumpulan Soal SMA Kelas 12

B. Global warning

C. Greenhouse effects

D. Earth’s atmosphere

E. the danger of carbon dioxide

21. What effect does carbon dioxide have on the atmosphere?

A. it sends warm radiation to Earth

B. It makes the atmosphere warmer

C. It makes the atmosphere darker to long-wave radiation

D. It makes the atmosphere allow most of the sun rays to pass through

E. It makes the atmosphere allow most of the sun rays to pass through it to heat Earth’s surface

22. One danger of greenhouse effect is ….

A. it reflects much of the heat energy back into the atmosphere

B. It procures heat that could affect the climate

C. It will flood earth

D. It will damage the weather

E. it produces radiation

23. “…. Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere.” (Paragraph 1)

The underlined word has the same meaning as …

A. Blown

B. Flown

C. Emitted

D. Absorbed

E. Evaporated

Eragon by Christopher Paolini

Genre: Science fiction

One day, a young farm biy named Eragon finds a blue stone while hunting and tries to sell it for money. Unsuccessful in his attempts, he takes the stone back to his cabin and lets it sit there until it hatches into a beautiful blue dragon. Eragon realizes that he can talk to this secret pet dragon with his mind, and eventually learns that he and the dragon are part of a legacy of secret heroes called the Riders.

With the help of Brom, a wise man, Eragon matures into his destiny. The challenges he faces include fighting a long-standing war, helping an ethereal elf, and dealing with a tragedy and a revenge. Certain details, such as Eragon’s revelation thet he cannot read, develop this rich work and blend together to produce a number of plot twists. The story builds suspense steadily until the end.

Remarkably, author Christopher Paolini began writing Eragon at the age of 15. Now 19, he has already established himself as an exciting new creator whose influence includes Tolkien, McCaffrey and others. His world is intricate, his characters believable, and his writing engaging.

The following text is for questions 3 and 4

It was the dawn of science and technology. Anything seemed possible-even the creation of life itself. Victor Frankenstein becomes obsessed with this idea and works relentlessly to prove his theories, but the glory he imagined becomes a living nightmare not only for him, but also for his friends and family.

Mary Shelly’s gothic horror story- Frankesnstein- was first published in 1818 and has been the inspiration behind numerous stage productions and films- many of which strayed a long way away from her original masterpiece. Classical Comics presenting a full-colour graphic novel remains true to this classic tale, bringing the original story to life which has never been created before.

Page 11: Kumpulan Soal SMA Kelas 12

This graphic novel is available in two versions: Original Text and Quick Text editions. The Original Text stays faithful to Shelley’s original text, while the Quick Text brings the story up-to-date by presenting the text into a more simplified style so the tale is accessible to all readers.

The Quick Text edition will allow you to soak up a general feeling for the characters and locations, while the Original Text version will help you easily slip into the language in which the novel was written.

Even if you’re not studying the original, this graphic novel is worth buying. It’s a great story, and should be one that everyone has the chance to read. Now, thanks to this release, even those who don’t particularly like to read too much are given the chance to find this tale and hopefully it may encourage them to search out the original book too.

As with previous Classical Comics, the presentation is excellent. The best grade glossy paper really helps to set this graphic novel head and shoulders above the usual comic book releases on the market. Not only that, you also get a pretty comprehensive biography of Shelley- Mary Shelley’s Family Tree- a feature that explains what life was like in the year of the book’s release-and a brief look on how Frankenstein has been adapted to many different formats over the years.

3. The simple way to understand the story is by reading....A. the original textB. classic comicsC. the quick textD. the original bookE. the author’s biography

4. The original text of Frankenstein graphic story makes the readers. . .A. understand the syle of writing in this eraB. curious about the historical background of storyC. recognize the diffrent life of FrankensteinstoryD. have the inspiration to put the story to a film and drama productsE. remains the life of Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein

The story of ‘Kung Fu Panda’ is nothing really new, but it is related so well that actually pack an emotional punch. It never comes off as laughable, which in lesser’s hands could easily have happened. Speaking of laughs, there are many to be had here as well. Kung Fu Panda works on just about every level a family movie can.

The cast features Jack Black as Po the Panda. The furious five, the most fearerd group of warriors in all of Chine, consists of Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis (Sth Roger), Viper (Lucy Liu), and Crane (David Cross). Their master is shifu (Dustin Hoffman), a full ball creature who is a legendary teacher of Kung Fu. An escape from prison and on his way to claim the Dragon Warrior, is the good bone bad Tai Lung (Ian McShane), but first, he’ll have to muscle his way around 400 pounds of panda to get to it. ‘Kung Fu Panda’ is a damn good time at the

Page 12: Kumpulan Soal SMA Kelas 12

2012 Film Review

2012 is Roland Emmerich’s film which uses the Mayan Calendar and other end-of-day prophecies for their doomsday scenario. It imagines the world coming to an end in 2012. 2012 film brighs off a series of wonders. The movie hits its peak early on. It starts when Cusack drives a limo through the streets of Los Angeles as freeways and skyscraper crumble all around him from the shock of a 10.5 earthquake. The preposterous flying sequence is equally thrilling. The climax occurs aboard the giant ark when equipment malfunction almost threatens the entire mission.

Unfortunately, the crucial sequence is not filmed or edited with the requisite clarity. In 2012 film, Emmerich leaves us befuddled as to exactly what is happening to whom. However, Emmerich’s 2012 deserves credit for offbeat castling. Cusack supplies his trademark hangdog charm. McCarthy has perhaps his best role ever as Peet’s cocky. Danny Glover lends dignity to the role of the tormented president. Chiwetel Ejiofor, as the chief scientist, brings a moving sense of anguish to a stock role. Platt has fun playing the viliain of the piece ad Woody Harrelson also chews the scenery as a bug-eyed radio prophet trying to warn his listeners about Armageddon.

All in one, 2012’s cinematography, production design and visual effects are award-worthy. Music also propels the movie. It presents American Idol runner-up, Adam Lambert, who provides a rousing anthem over the end credits.

A. Adam LambertB. Danny GloverC. Cusack.D. Roland EmmerichE. Woody Harrelson

9. Which part of the film should be improved?

A. The musicB. The visual effectC. The equipment D. Crucial sequenceE. The design
