STATEMENT OF FAITH

We believe in one God, who is eternal and exists in three persons known as The Trinity: The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit.

We believe in the deity and the humanity of Christ: He was fully God and fully man. We believe in His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, and His vicarious and atoning death. We believe in His Resurrection. We believe He ascended into Heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.

We believe that the presence of the Holy Spirit dwells within all believers to share the Good News of Jesus Christ to dedicate themselves to living godly lives.

We believe the Bible to be the absolute inspired true word of God.

We believe Christ desires to have a personal relationship with all persons, regardless of age, origin, or sin.

We believe that the Church is the Body of Christ, enlivened and empowered by the Holy Spirit to accomplish God’s purposes on earth.

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of Kids Under Construction is to provide a loving, caring, safe environment that fosters the spiritual, emotional, social and cognitive growth of the child through a Christian approach.

CURRICULUM STATEMENT We believe that each child is a unique creation, a child of God. Children experience learning through various activities including through play. Positive reinforcement will be practiced as part of a program that includes self-selection as well as teacher-directed activities in music, art, literacy, language, numeracy, motor development, science, creative play, and sensory experiences.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching.

2 Timothy 3:16

GUIDANCE POLICY Kids Under Construction follows the discipline procedures as outlined in the “Child Care Regulations” for the State of New Mexico. Because we believe that each child is a unique creation of God and therefore entrusted to us to be shown His love, we strive to guide children in a manner that is gentle and loving. We believe:

Discipline provides training that enables a child to develop self-control and orderly conduct in relation to peers and adults.

Discipline should be clear and understandable to the child, be consistent, and be explained to the child before and at the time of disciplinary action.

Discipline shall include positive guidance, redirection, and the setting of clear cut limits which foster the child’s own ability to become self-disciplined.

The following disciplinary practices are never used:

Physical punishment of any type

Withdrawal of food, rest, or bathroom opportunities

Abusive or profane language

Any form of public or private humiliation including the threat of physical punishment

Unsupervised isolation of the child

Any other type of punishment that is hazardous to the physical, emotional, or mental health of the child.

CONFIDENTIALITY POLICY All staff members of Kids Under Construction are trained on the importance of confidentiality, and sign a confidentiality statement, which is kept in their personnel files.

Consistent abuse of this rule may result in suspension of Construction Zone privileges. An optional Lunch Bunch hour, from 12:00pm to 1:00pm, is also available to all Two and Three Year Olds enrolled in classes that end at 12:00pm. During this time, students will have lunch followed by outside play time (weather permitting).

DROP OFF & PICK UP OF STUDENTS

Please park in designated parking lot.

Do not leave any valuables (including children) unattended in your car.

Please do not bring your child earlier than (FIVE) 5 MINUTES BEFORE CLASS BEGINS

Please walk your child to his/her class and remember to sign them in and out. Never send your child in unattended.

Please be prompt in picking up your child. If you will be late, please call us so we can reassure your child. If you are late, your child will be taken to Day Care and you will be charged a $5.00 fee in addition to the regular $5.45 per hour.

Your child/children will only be released to you or someone you have designated IN WRITING on the enrollment form as being authorized to pick up your child/children. We will ask for a photo I.D. of anyone (other than parent) who picks up a child. Any parent that is divorced or separated from child’s parent, must have a court document stating if a child can or cannot be released to anyone either parent puts on pick up list if there are concerns. We cannot be responsible for both parties and who they choose to pick up their child.

Legal responsibility for a child passes from school to parent when child is released to parent. Please make sure your child does not leave the building without you.

SECURITY Kids Under Construction wants to provide the safest environment possible for your child. It is important for you to be a part of this process. The security system that protects our school is through a security code issued to you on the first day of school. This code is to be kept confidential to insure the safety of the children. If you forget the code or someone is picking your child up, please have them ring the buzzer. You will have to be identified before we allow entry. This may take a few minutes. Please do not allow anyone to enter with you that you do not know or does not appear to be a part of our school. We would also ask you to be aware of surroundings around the school. If there is anything that seems suspicious, please report it immediately to the office. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES (this includes children) IN YOUR VEHICLE UNATTENDED.

CHILD CUSTODY

For parents who are not living together and are separated or divorced, KUCI must have a copy of any legal documentation, ON SITE, concerning visitation and/or custody situations. Any changes that take place must be kept updated with administration. Both parents must agree on all persons authorized to pick up the child as submitted on the enrollment form. Both parents will need to approve each person on this list by signing their initials next to each jointly approved name.

EMERGENCY PLAN

Of course emergencies can never be anticipated, but rest assured KUCI has an emergency evacuation plan in place in the event that one was to happen. We will contact parents as to where you can pick up your child or you can call our school and there will be a message with instructions. (505) 293-4448. Please read the following information carefully so that you fully understand our procedures.

KIDS UNDER CONSTRUCTION Emergency Action Plans

The primary goal of an emergency response plan is to prevent injuries or loss of life. Therefore, in an emergency the staff and students must be notified as quickly and efficiently as possible so that appropriate action may be taken. The emergency action plans listed herein may be activated by school staff in the event of an emergency, or on the advice of local law enforcement or fire/emergency services. Should the KUCI building become unsafe or unavailable for use, every effort will be made to quickly find immediate temporary accommodations. If finding alternative accommodations are delayed, KUCI would temporarily close its doors until an acceptable location is obtained. These five major types of emergency action are:

LOCKDOWN SHELTER IN PLACE FIRE ALARM EVACUATION BOMB THREAT

LOCKDOWN: A lockdown will be used whenever the school is threatened by a person or event that poses an imminent danger to the school. The school director may instruct the school to go into lockdown by circumstances they observe on or near the campus, or at the direction or advice of local law enforcement when such an incident occurs. However, if the director determines that the school should go into lockdown for any such incident, 911 should be called to report the incident. SHELTER IN PLACE: To be used when the threat is for an event off campus that does not pose the same degree of threat caused by a lockdown event.

Types of threats:

I. Police activity in the area that does not cause a threat to the school. II. Fire or other emergency activity in the neighborhood that does not threaten the school.

III. Gas leak or smoke in the area that does not require an evacuation. IV. Any other natural external hazard.

Everyone will remain in the building until the “all clear” signal is given. EVACUATION: An evacuation should be used when remaining inside the buildings poses more of a threat than leaving the building and relocating to an alternative location.

1. An evacuation may be ordered when there is a gas leak or fire in the building, or when a similar event occurs off campus but near enough that the safety of the buildings are compromised.

2. When a threat is contained on a portion of the campus and the rest of the campus needs to be evacuated away from the threat. 3. When a bomb threat is received that appears to be legitimate, and on the advice of police or fire personnel. 4. When directed by police or fire personnel.

If appropriate the Director or designee will contact KOB radio at, 767-9185 or fax 767-9130, to notify parents where the evacuation site is so they can pick up their child.

When handicapped children or children with special needs are in the facility, an employee will be assigned to individual children for evacuation. This designated employee will also be responsible for retrieving any medication/epipens for the assigned children.

In the case of an emergency evacuation, KUCI staff will be supervising the students enrolled at KUCI. Administrative staff will contact parents immediately of where children can be picked up.

Two evacuation sites are available:

ENROLLMENT, DISENROLLMENT, AND EXPULSION POLICY

Enrollment Registration requirements are as follows:

Current immunization records at the time of registration

Completed registration form including: physician’s phone number, emergency contacts and phone numbers, and authorized persons allowed to pick up your child

Copies of any custody agreements

Signed financial agreement form, Tuition Express Enrollment Form, and payment of registration fee(s).

Disenrollment KUCI reserves the right, as circumstances may arise, to discharge a child from the program at the discretion of the Director and the child’s teacher. Parents will be consulted and every effort will be made to avoid a discharge.

Possible reasons for expulsion include: persistent disruptive behavior, behavior which the teacher is not equipped to handle, or behavior which is a clear hazard to other students or staff (see Expulsion Policy below).

A child may be disenrolled if parents fail to abide by the enrollment agreement and/or conditions described in the handbook. KUCI reserves the right to disenroll a child if payment is delinquent over 30 days.

If you plan to disenroll your child from KUCI, notify the Director in writing at least two weeks in advance. Without this notice, you will be charged for the two additional weeks.

Expulsion Policy The first course of action for non-violent disruptive behavior should be positive redirection, reinforcement of the rules and guidelines, and speaking directly to the child about their behavior.

If a child intentionally hits, chokes, bites or kicks another child or teacher, they should be brought to the school office. A parent/guardian will be notified to pick up the child. Evidence of the incident must be apparent or have been witnessed. The employee that witnessed or was made aware of the incident should submit a written report to the KUCI Director immediately. This employee will also be a direct participant in resolving the issue. Should a second offense occur, a mandatory conference that includes the parent, employee and Director will take place to implement a plan of action and establish a probationary period.

If the child breaches the agreed upon plan of action, or shows no evidence of consistently following through on the plan, the child may be expelled from the school for the safety of all involved.

COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS

Each month the Director will email you the KUCI newsletter, informing you of events going on within the school. The television screen in the Great Square area also provides KUCI announcements. Teachers will also email you updates and letters to inform you of what is going on in the classroom. If you do not have access to email, please let the office and your child’s teacher know so they may give you a hard copy.

CONFERENCES

We provide conferences twice a year (October and April). We encourage you to take advantage of this great opportunity to learn how your children are advancing and growing. It’s also a great time for you to ask questions. Please know we are always available to schedule a time to visit with you if you have concerns.

TYPICAL CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES

Your child’s teacher will have posted outside their room a basic schedule of what takes place each day. Each class follows a specific schedule each day, and activities vary each school day. Teachers will email you each week to give you a better understanding of these activities and upcoming events. If you do not have an email address to forward this information to, please see your child’s teacher, so she can provide a hard copy for you. Each class participates in circle time, project/self-selection time, outdoor play, snack, show and tell, music, and chapel. There is a sample schedule listed in back of handbook to give you an idea of these schedules. Construction Zone has a schedule posted outside their door as well.

FIELD TRIPS

The Pre-K Fives Class in our preschool periodically takes field trips related to the theme that is being carried out in the classroom. Parents are always notified of field trips and are required to sign a permission slip in order to have their child participate. We encourage parents to sign up as chaperones for the trip; however, we ask that you do not bring siblings along. Chaperones need to devote all their attention on the children for whom they are responsible.

12

SCHOOL-WIDE ACTIVITIES

KUCI plans several school-wide activities throughout the school year. Parents are encouraged to volunteer in all events. In the fall, we have a Harvest Festival, completely transforming our multipurpose room into a festive learning environment. At Christmas, the children prepare a traditional singing program for the families. And in the spring, we pick a theme to once again transform our multipurpose room into a hands-on learning experience. Your child’s teacher will inform you as these events begin to take shape.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Outside of our school-wide activities and parent/teacher conferences, we offer opportunities for you to be a part of your child’s activities within the classroom, especially when we are working on special projects. During these activities, we ask that you make arrangements for siblings, as we are unable to accommodate them within the classroom.

CHAPEL

Once a week the children gather in the church sanctuary for Chapel. The program includes Bible stories, Bible verses, puppets, visuals, singing, and praying as well as church etiquette. This is a very special time for the children, as they hear and learn how to worship God.

MUSIC

You may already know that early musical training helps develop brain areas involved in language and reasoning, spatial intelligence, thinking creatively, and problem-solving. Our weekly music classes include interesting and diverse exercises and songs. The children experience music through movement, motions, various rhythm instruments, and hands-on activities with real instruments!

BIRTHDAYS

Celebrating children is BIG at our school and birthdays are a great way to do this on an individual basis. Your teacher will give you guidelines. If you are planning a birthday party for your child and you want to invite children in the class, please do not pass out invitations at school if the entire class is not invited. We appreciate your cooperation in this.

SNACK IDEAS

KUCI is a Peanut-Free School You will receive a monthly snack calendar in which the teacher has assigned your child a specific day to bring a healthy snack and drink for the class. Please do not send anything with peanut butter in it. We are a “peanut free” school due to allergies. If your child requires special snacks you are required to send with them their snack. WHAT TO BRING

Clothing:

Your child should wear comfortable, machine washable clothing that can be handled by the child (no complicated fastenings) and will be appropriate for active work and play. We do provide smocks for artwork and other messy activities, however children still may get something on their clothing, so dress your child accordingly.

Please have your daughter wear shorts under her dress/skirt.

Closed-toe shoes are encouraged, to protect the children as they climb and play on the playground. Sandals and open-toe shoes have led to several injuries.

Always send a jacket with your child during the cooler months. We do go outside and play most days. The only exception is during extreme weather conditions. So please dress your child appropriately.

Please label all jackets, backpacks, and other items.

Send a change of clothing for your child - just in case. You can keep them in your child’s backpack.

Backpack: Please send a backpack or tote bag with your child’s name visible on the outside. Make sure it is large enough to carry home folders with their work, projects, and an extra set of clothing.

Toys:

We ask that all toys be left at home since they might get lost or broken. If your child is bringing something for show and tell please make sure that they are not items such as guns, war toys, or toys of destruction/aggression. We will not allow them to share these items. If your child needs a special comfort blanket or stuffed animal when in Construction Zone day care, please feel free to send it with him/her. We ask that these items be left at home otherwise.

SAFETY AND WELLNESS

Illness:

Kids Under Construction uses the “well child policy”. For the protection of other children and staff, any child that appears to be ill will not be admitted to the classroom or Construction Zone. You are requested not to bring a child who has symptoms of illness such as a fever, rash, diarrhea, runny nose and/or cough (cold symptoms which are transmittable to others). Please allow one full day after your child’s recovery before his/her return to the program. A recovering child must be free from fever, diarrhea and vomiting for at least 24 hours before returning. Please call office if your child will be absent. We can be reached at 293-4448. Children who become ill during the day will be separated from the other children and parents will be contacted to pick them up.

Medication: Kids Under Construction will administer medication to your child when necessary. We are only able to give medication that has been prescribed by a doctor. In order for us to administer, you will need to fill out a medication form with the dosage documented.

All medicine to be administered must be in its original container.

All medication is to be kept in the office with the medication form filled out.

***DO NOT PUT MEDICATION IN LUNCH BOXES OR BACKPACKS. THIS INCLUDES INHALERS.***

Sunscreen: KUCI prefers that each parent apply sunscreen daily to his or her own child. If additional sunscreen is needed during the day, please sign a form and supply sunscreen (marked with the child’s name) to the teacher.

ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES If your child has a minor accident at school, (scraped knee, etc.) a staff member will notify you when you pick up your child. We keep documentation of these accidents on file. If a child receives a more serious injury, after we have assessed the situation, we will call the parent, and of course 911 if necessary. Our staff is CPR/First Aid certified.

IMMUNIZATIONS

In accordance with State Licensing Regulations, KUCI must have current immunization records at time of registration. Please stop by office if you have questions.

SUSPECTED CHILD ABUSE OR NEGLECT KUCI staff members are required by law to report suspected cases of child abuse or neglect. Staff members are to report to the Director any unexplained injury, incident, or behavior that may indicate abuse.

KIDS UNDER CONSTRUCTION CURRICULUM Our curriculum is a product of a dynamic collaborated effort of our staff members. We have chosen concepts that can be expanded upon and articulated through various age groups. The main themes are broken into Key Learning Concepts which are further defined through Focus Points. The NM Early Learning Guidelines have been adapted for our KUCI school population and are represented in the course of learning. We understand and respect that each child is unique and will develop at his or her own pace. KUCI continually seeks to improve and adapt the concepts and instructional strategies to best meet the needs of the students of our school.
