As I stand on a clearing high above Nelson, the winter’s first snowfall draws the curtains of darkness across the starry skies of late autumn transforming the Kootenay pallet to a magical series of subtle winter greys. From the jet black night sky cas-cades the hypnotizing flakes of new snow almost audible as they alight on the blue-white carpet. The crevices of the frozen forest mesmerize as dark shadows conjure images of winter’s mercurial mystery. Focusing is futile as a million of points of light blur the lines of reality and the whispers of winter fore-shadow the coming months.

Through the snowy haze the lights of Nelson glow far below the illuminated greyness like the phosphorescent skin of a sleeping sturgeon. Lonely lights of late night cars join the humming cluster as select souls travel through the sleeping cell. The sound of the snowflakes resound like the wings of a thousand grey jays through the fictitious black branches in the forest of the night sky.

A feeling of calm and the fortitude of winter transmute the warm hues of the cold grey season ahead. Images of winters past dance on the silvery screen of winter dreams. Jack Frost sprinkles ephemeral confetti in fifty shades of grey as an opening ceremony for this most magic of seasons is ushered in by silence. Listen… Ullr awakens. Michael

FIFTY SHADES OF WINTER

THE END OF THE BEGINNINGThe idea of an “end of time” borders on the absurd, or at least the impossible to fathom. To imply time is linear or that an end could even exist is to wander into the realm of abstraction or un-provability. As we face predictions of apocalypse and crisis or im-manent ascension and enlightenment, in some sense it will be the end of world as we know it, just as every moment is the end of the world we know and a leap forward into the unknown. We seek to give meaning and purpose to this infinite process of un-folding, and we organize time in such a way as to give the illusion that it is line that has a mythical beginning and a unforseeable end.

New physics and math is already light years ahead of us, existing in the future where there is no end and no beginning, where things are relative and incalculably complex. Time is a lot bigger than originally expected, and far from linear.

Galactic awareness has come with telescopes and mechanical probes, and we are barely scratching the surface of the world that awaits beyond our preconceived notions of time and space. When we arrive it will truly seem like this is not the end time, but the begin-ning of the rest of it all.

Forget about all this horror show doomsday crap. How prepared can we be? The end of history is here, get ready for everything to seem like normal, but be completely new at the same time. Our only cer-tainty is that things are going to change. Change is a constant. How the changes look is up to us. Sijay

More than likely winter solstice 2012 will pass like any other day. The shift is already happening, and what we’re marking now is the undeni-able reality that the world is irrevocably changing. “World” is something different than “planet”. The planet is a physical entity with clear bound-aries; the world is a relative experience of the circumstances life offers. In a way we all occupy different worlds, and when we meet, our worlds collide and try to find some sort of mutual agreement on the way things are. We don’t have a coherent shared singular world that all of human-ity agrees on and takes part in. As we find ourselves in a newly connected global culture the challenge is to explore our potential for working in unison. Everywhere in nature small systems combine to form larger ones, just as many billions of cells together form a human organism. As humanity reaches critical mass on Earth we see a whole planetary being coming into form. The potential is for humans to join as a cohesive entity capable of making decisions on a grand scale and acting together for the common good. Individually we are powerful divine beings, each containing a spark of the Creator within us; networked together we are a super-powerful global hive-mind, capable of simultaneously holding individual person-ality while maintaining awareness of our role in the larger entity, our place in the cosmos, and the story we’ve been left to unfold.Assembling this issue has been a mind-altering experience and I offer heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to and supported the process. Within these pages is a media experience meant to shed some light in uncertain times and perhaps offer some helpful knowledge and wisdom. It is an honour to be with you here in the river. Please enjoy our humble offering to these awesome times. Brain

2012 AND BEYONDDecember 21, winter solstice, 2012, has been suggested by numerous new age spiritualists, mayanists, I Ching scholars, alternative archeologists and conspira-cy theorists as the so called “end” of the Mayan calendar. The proliferation of all manner of information (and misinformation) has been amplified by the internet.

Speculation on the significance of the end of this great cycle is the stuff of new age legend. Mayan historical revisionists, art scholars, prophets and channels have forecasted the 2012 event to have enormous significance to humanity. Everything from planetary disasters, alien invasions, galactic collisions, to the full ascension of humanity to other dimensions has been put forward as a potential future. This may be the cusp of a new human era, or the extinction of of our species.

Vigorous searching of alternative media sources and new age texts has revealed a tangled web of possibilities and potential paradigm shifts. There is little stable ground for those in search of truth for the future that lays beyond the winter solstice of 2012. Regardless of one’s beliefs in the theories proposed, the implications of what these people have prophesied for these times remains to be seen. Sijay

TERRENCE MCKENNA:According to Terence McKenna, the universe has a teleological attractor at the end of time that increases interconnectedness, eventually reaching a singularity of infi-nite complexity in 2012, at which point anything and everything imaginable will occur simultaneously. Terrence came to these conclusions through the usage of Psilocybin and DMT, and an in depth analysis of the I Ching which he developed into a theory known as TimeWave Zero. google: Mckenna / Timewave zero / Invisible landscape

KALKI BHAGAVANIn India, the guru Kalki Bhagavan has promoted 2012 as a “deadline” for human en-lightenment since at least 1998. Over 15 million people consider Bhagavan to be the incarnation of the god Vishnu and believe that 2012 marks the end of the Kali Yuga, or degenerate age. The Oneness movement has followers worldwide with chapters all over the world including an active group in Nelson BC.google: Bhagavan / Oneness / Moola Mantra

DANIEL PINCHBECK: In 2006, author Daniel Pinchbeck popularized New Age concepts about this date in his book 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl, linking b’ak’tun 13 to beliefs in crop circles, alien abduction, and personal revelations based on the use of hallucinogenic drugs and mediumship. Pinchbeck claims to discern a “growing realization that ma-terialism and the rational, empirical worldview that comes with it has reached its ex-piration date. We’re on the verge of transitioning to a dispensation of consciousness that’s more intuitive, mystical and shamanic”.google: quetzalcoatl, iboga, , evolver network

DRUNVALO MELCHIZADEKBelieving himself to be a reincarnation of the Egyptian character Thoth, Melchize-dek has proposed that 2012 will be a major milestone for human consciousness, forecasting an energetic and dimensional shift that will force a massive ascension / illumination / death event for most of humanity. He has suggested that only those able to align with the emotional spaces of the heart will find this a comfortable transi-tion, as well as those with extensive understanding of the human etheric energy field and the sacred geometrical object known as the “merkaba”.google: flower of life / merkaba / melchizadek / thoth

JOSE ARGUELLESAn art historian and cultural theorist, Arguelles based a new calendrical movement, the Dreamspell, on the mathematics and symbology of the Mayan calendar. He theorized that the Gregorian calendar was flawed due to it’s adherence to the 12 month system rather than a 13 moon natural time cycle. He founded the Planet Art Network, a project dedicated to the transformation of humanity through the usage of the Dreamspell. Arguelles identified himself as Valum Votan, a reincarnation of Pacal Votan. He channeled an adjustment to the alignment date of the mayan long count (quiche) with the Gregorian Calendar, which is not endorsed by Mayan schol-ars, or indigenous Mayan elders, but which also has adherents in the millions. His organization of the 1987 Harmonic Convergence is considered one of the important milestones of the new age.google: telektonon / Dreamspell / Planet Art Network / harmonic convergence

As we hurdle down the time chute toward winter solstice 2012 and out into 2013, our world is trembling with transi-tion. We are facing a series of nested crises as a climactic pinnacle to our planetary human civilization. Impend-ing environmental collapse is indicated as species go extinct every minute while the remaining resources of the planet are being extracted, processed and used up in a way that is damaging and toxi-fying the biosphere. As our living world sickens, so does humanity with a related radical rise in disease and sickness. In our social sphere things are also deep in crisis, with the economic, political and the corporate worlds facing widespread unrest and active opposition. Today you

can almost reach out and touch the eschaton. No doubt these are end times. In light of the crisis, or despite it, our civilization is making epic leaps in the arts, media and technology. Creativity is also in a climax as visionaries emerge in all the fields of human pursuit to lead the way into a new kind of millennium. Collective artistic pro-cesses are borne from the global visionary culture where artists, de-signers, philosophers, teachers, scien-tists, healers, and conscious communi-ties forge the way towards a revivified future. Delvin Solkinson

“2012 has been a year of accelerated transformation. As our established global paradigm grows increasingly brittle and its exploitative nature increasingly apparent, the potential for revolution grows brighter. Be inspired!” Mugwort Artemesia

The consciousness of this planet is chang-ing. Mother Earth can no longer support the wanton destruction of her natural resources. As such we are evolving away from 2,500 years of paternal dominance into the nur-turing maternal, egalitarian, resource based economy of the feminine principal.” Padma Samchuck

“Era 2012 has and will continue to produce key synchronistic events, not all of which are simply cataclysmic, but all of which are revo-lutionary. We're at this dynamic revolution-ary juncture, and it's moving really fast, and there's no taking it away.”

THE GREAT CYCLE CLOSES Carved lid of the tomb of K’inich Janaab’ Pakal in the Temple of the Inscriptions.

Erich von Däniken proposed the “Maya Astronaut” when he repro-duced a drawing of the sarcophagus lid and comparing Pacal’s pose to that astronauts. He proposed this as evidence of extraterrestrial influence on the ancient Maya..

Through our current understanding of astronomy, geography and archaeology, the Mesoamerican calendar probably originated with the Olmecs, and a settlement existed at Izapa, in southeast Chiapas, Mexico, before 1200 BC. There, at a latitude of about 15° N, the Sun passes through zenith twice a year, and there are 260 days between zenithal passages, and gnomons (used generally for observing the path of the Sun and specifically, these passages), were found at this site. The calendar used two main systems, among others. These two were the Ha'ab and the T'zolkin, the former being a solar, agricultural system and the latter being a human experience, a ritual almanac for the spirit. The T'zolkin operates on a 13x20 system, interesting as we have 13 major joints in the human body and 20 digits on our hands and feet; also, 13+20=33 the number of vertebrae in the human spine. 13x20=260 days or k'in in the T'zolkin round. In 2012, the Earth will experience a dimen-sional shift. The programs that had prevailed for the previous 5,000 years will be dis-solved. A new set of precepts will be estab-lished within the planetary mind of the noo-sphere. This will be the first stage of the new evolutionary being: the superhuman. This being will be in tune with the Sun and with the field of galactic consciousness. Life will take on radically different patterns to ground this expanded sphere of consciousness.

When we talk about a dimensional phase shift, we are talking about a shift in the pat-terns that ultimately affect our relationship to ourselves and the Universe. Whereas in the

cycle of history the perceptions were bound by third dimensional norms of materialism, in the redemption of the galactic future follow-ing 2012, we will be functioning as entities now absorbed into a cosmic civilization.

For the Galactic Mayans, this is the fulfill-ment of a vast engineering project in time. They knew this would mark the climax of history, which would accelerate into a dimen-sional phase shift. Now the unprecedented promise of consciously entering a new cycle has begun. Because the Great Cycle closes, it opens again, becoming the endlessness of cosmic consciousness. Valum Votan

Erich von Däniken's "Maya Astronaut"

The Maya believed in a cyclical nature of time. The rituals and ceremonies were-closely associated with celestial and ter-restrial cycles which they observed and in-scribed as separate calendars. The Maya priest had the job of interpreting these cycles and giving a prophetic outlook on the future or past based on the number relations of all their calendars. The Spanish Church and government officials destroyed Maya texts and with them the knowledge of Maya writing.Three of the pre-Columbian books dated to the post classic period have been preserved: The Madrid Codex, The Dresden Codex and the Paris Codex.

We as humans are but a fraction of what we were made to be, like a well made computer chassis needing more RAM and a way better CPU core. If we are to be of any real use in the grander scale of things, we have a responsibility as humans to work with what we were born with on this planet and clear out all of the unnecessary blockages that exist inside of our physical and en-ergetic bodies. This is like a defrag.

On top of this a level of self discipline is required to build the healthy relationship with the energies of our present experience, so we may be able to more directly perceive the true nature of things and how they operate. This may also entail purification of the body, dietary changes and concentrating the flow of energy through the body. Create and maintain a simple and efficient op-erating system. This is like a RAM upgrade.

Finding our way here as humans is a great step but the quad core CPU upgrade will only happen when the centering force of compassion can be maintained and the levels of self importance and conflict can be remodelled into a crystallized expression of inner peace, allowing us to be fully integrated into the moment and allowing all of the present streams of experience and infor-mation to pass directly through us with little to no freezing up or loading time. LUKE BROWNLuke brown is a phenomenon. Hailing from the east of Canada, he current-ly lives in Bali and travels the world creating mind blowing digital art, live painting in oil and acrylic. He works with Balinese craftspeople to build multimedia wood sculptures based on his extensive sketches.

Showing aptitude for art from a very early age he was nurtured by his family to explore painting and drawing, finding early employment as an exceptionally talented tattoo artist. This work formed the basis of his early training in the 90’s, and is still evident in his drawing/painting style.

In the early 2000’s he began creat-ing digital art which quickly catapulted him to global notoriety as one of the

leaders of the new generation of vi-sionary artists. Acknowledged and respected by masters of this artistic genre, including Robert Venosa and Alex Grey, Luke’s art has been widely embraced by the world psychedelic community as its themes and textures are indicative of these sorts of altered states.

He has shown work all over the world and spoken at numerous festivals in-cluding Boom in Portugal, Symbiosis in California and Rainbow Serpent in Australia. As a young man I once had a vision of light as a 360 degree X : Y : Z energy field of planetary electrons whizzing around and radiating from a central point. This vision of one omnipresent light based upon sacred geometries changed my being and how I viewed all of life. It is the basic design structure and core principle of all my work. I believe we are all beings of light inside these physical bodies. It’s this light that I have chosen to spend my life rendering and painting, with the hopes of reaching people’s consciousness in a positive way.In light and love Padma Samchuk

On the astral planets, beings are not depen-dent upon air or electricity in order to exist. They live in variously coloured rays of light. There is more freedom in the astral world than in the physical world. There are no bones to break, because there are no solids there; everything is composed of light rays. And everything takes place by the power of thought. When souls in the astral want to produce a garden, they merely will it, and the garden comes into being. It remains as long as it is willed to. When a soul wants the garden to disappear, it goes away.

PLANETARY THERAPY

A very high level of dimensional conscious-ness has as its "body" the planet Earth. You, on a high level of consciousness, have as your body the body you are currently using. Literally, someday you will become suns and stars in the sky - it is part of the process of life. Drunvalo Melchizedek

Humanity was once higher than we presently are. We fell into deeper densities and lost touch with knowing of an intuitive sort. It's almost like we lost our cable and went down to two channels. Now we're re-establishing our cable, we have many channels, we're re-gaining access to what's always been there. Michael O’Connor

Ramana Maharshi said that the greatest mystery of life is that we seek reality even though we are reality. 2012 ascension some-times makes me worry that we are falling into that same old trap of aversion to what is happening, plainly, here and now.

Where is there to go? What is there to become? Will hope of a human transforma-tion create suffering and disappointment in the end? Are we all meant to live one "en-lightened" way, and who decides what is enlightened? Is there a mode of transforma-tion that meets everyone where they are at? Jiddu Krishnamurti says “The highest form of human intelligence is to observe yourself without judgement.” To practice such naked awareness could become the gentle revolu-tion that is both easily attained and accom-modating to all. Honest Self-inquiry is the true ascension, and nothing happens. Mattisyahoo Wilsonburgo

We all feel it. Ev-erything seems to be changing, and so quickly! The very nature of our

thoughts and our es-tablished reactions

seem suddenly so different. Our sense of basic, primal identity is being challenged by a different kind of knowing. We don’t really know all that we are. Our fun-damental beliefs about life are being ques-tioned at all levels. As the person we thought we were becomes increasingly unlike the person we seem to be, we are faced with a fundamental search for the truth about who we are.

People have often turned to psychotherapy for these answers. At this time in history it is not an individual but a collective or universal

transformation occurring. The whole planet is in therapy. Planetary therapy takes us on a journey in which we discover that we are all suffering from a case of mistaken identity.

Many of us feel threatened by this process. At some level we know that our very sense of what is real is being undermined. We are facing the death of our story and our identifi-cation with the story’s main character. When misunderstood, these powerful inner forces may be externalized and projected outward and emerge as stories of planetary destruc-tion in which bodies rather than minds are destroyed. As our consciousness continues to evolve we will understand the awesome gift being offered, of freedom from fear and separation and loss of any kind. We will realize that the only thing that is dying is an illusion, and that everything real is perfectly safe. Jerry Levinson

Hypnotherapist Dolores Cannon noticed common threads running through her hyp-notherapy sessions. While under hypnosis, many revealed that they had lived on another planet in their immediate previous lifetime, and had felt compelled to answer a distress call to save Earth and the human race. The distress calls began in earnest during our time frame of around the mid 1950's.

Many of those souls who heeded these calls came from other planets and willingly vol-unteered to incarnate into human bodies, despite the risks and inherent dangers of living on this planet. They were told their presence was desperately needed to assist the Earth to make a critical transformation to a higher form of consciousness. In5d.com

American psychic Edgar Cayce predicted im-pending polar shift and climate change, yet he was very emphatic that nothing was written in stone. During his read-ings, he constantly re-minded that prayer and

right thought could alter the dire future he foresaw. He mentions that in the aftermath of the shift, hidden knowledge will be un-earthed that will help humankind advance to the next spiritual level. Nos Trado

ATLANTEAN END TIMES

Now in this island of Atlantis there was a great and wonder-ful empire which had rule over the whole island and several others, and over parts of the continent, and furthermore.Compelled to stand alone, after having undergone the very extremity of danger, she defeated and triumphed over the invaders, and preserved from slavery those who were not yet subjugated, and generously liberated all the rest of us who dwell within the pillars. But afterwards there occurred violent earthquakes and floods; and in a single day and night of misfortune all warlike men in a body sank into the earth, and the island of Atlantis in like manner disappeared in the depths of the sea. Plato’s Timaeus

Cayce maintained that Atlantis was an ancient civilization that was techno-logically superior to even our own and that its last surviving islands have dis-appeared somewhere in the Atlantic ocean some ten thousand years ago. He said the people of Atlantis had con-structed giant laser-like crystals for power plants, and that these were responsible for t h e second destruction of the land. Cayce blamed the final de-struction of Atlantis and the disintegration of their culture on greed and lust. But before the legendary land disappeared under the waves, Cayce revealed that there was an exodus of many Atlanteans to ancient Egypt. Cayce attributed the Biblical Great Flood of Noah to be a result of the sinking of the last huge remnants of Atlantis. Levi Athan

The Balinese have their own calendar system. Two, in fact, running in parallel:

SASIH The Sasih cycle is a 12 lunar month calendar system. Each month begins on the day after a new moon (tilem). The middle of each month is the full moon (purnama).

PAWUKON The Pawukon calendar system is believed to be indigenous to the Ba-linese, possibly rooted in the thou-sand-year-old rice-growing cycle of the island. There are six months to a Pawukon year, and 35 days to a Pawukon month. So a Pawukon year is 210 days. Each Pawukon month is divided into many shorter cycles (weeks) that run concurrently. The most important weeks are the 3, 5, and 7 day weeks

Certain days of the Sasih are con-sidered important, namely tilem and purnama. Temple anniversaries and festivals usually occur on a purnama. Days prior to a Sasih new year, the whole island participates in celebra-

tions and presenting offerings and performing ritual temple cleansing. The climax is the day of the new year: Nyepi. On this day, the entire island goes into reflection and meditation, shutting down everything, including electricity. So, don’t be surprised if your hotel manager asks you to close your curtain on a Nyepi day.On the Pawukon cycle, certain con-junctions of the different week cycles are considered significant. On these days, ceremonies and sacred dances are performed in the temples, and people immerse themselves in prayers and meditation. Michael

The Kardashev scale classifies how techno-logically advanced a civilization is based on the amount of energy a civilization is able to generate, harvest and control.

Type 1 can harness all the power available on a single planet (wind, solar, nuclear, etc). Its culture and economy are global. It is toler-ant, communicative and pluralistic. A Type 1 civilization must be peaceful.Type 2 can harness all the power from its nearest star and is capable of interplanetary spaceflight and communication. The Fed-eration of Planets from Star Trek is a good example. Type 3 can harness all the power of its home galaxy. Faster than light travel is fully embed-ded in culture and commerce. Such a para-digm is inherently difficult to imagine from our perspective.

Nature and all its organisms on Earth would be a Type 1 civilization. Humans of Earth are

a Type Zero civilization. We possess many qualities of Type 1 but have yet to make the requisite shift to global peace. We can tap into enough energy to totally transform or destroy ourselves and the planet, yet we still have famine, war and totalitarian rule.

The Kardashev Scale is an exponential growth curve meaning the rate of evolution occurs faster over time. If it takes Humans ten million years to reach a Type 1 civiliza-tion, it may take only one thousand years to reach Type 2. Norrin Radd

EAT THE SUNSOLAR EVOLUTION

The method of becoming a solar cooker is quite simple. Start by looking straight into the rising morning sun for only a few seconds. Slowly increase the time to 30 to 35 minutes. If you do this gradually, your eyes will not be damaged and help in charging your brain with solar energy.Desire for food will slowly diminish as the brain starts developing the capac-ity to store solar energy. You develop a corona of energy around you. As this energy field becomes stronger, diseases don’t harm you. Even your worst enemy will become harmless. Hira Ratan Manek

IT’S HAPPENING NOW

The Elders declared that this new Fifth World would have as its hallmark the attributes of positive feminine energy. They explained that the Fourth World, which had been hallmarked by male energy dominance, had had its time, and made its contributions. Now that World is passing away. The Fifth World being born must not be one of separatist female dom-inance, but rather one of forming a renewed society of women and men as equals. Fifth World society is shaped by the feminine paths of cooperation, nonaggression, inclusiveness, noncompetitiveness, service rather than dominance, use of psychic and spiritual gifts as well as technology, and living in conscious harmony with nature’s ways. Solomon Treefoot

You have been telling people that this is the Eleventh Hour, now you must go back and tell the people that this is the Hour. And there are things to be considered:

Where are you living? What are you doing? What are your relationships? Are you in right relation?Where is your water?Know your garden. It is time to speak your truth.Create your community.Be good to each other. And do not look outside yourself for your leader.

This could be a good time! There is a river flowing now very fast. It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid. They will try to hold on to the shore. They will feel they are being torn apart and will suffer greatly. Know the river has its destination. The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off into the middle of the river, keep our eyes open, and our heads above the water. See who is in there with you and celebrate. At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally, least of all ourselves. For the moment that we do, our spiritual growth and journey come to a halt.

The time of the lone wolf is over. Gather yourselves! Banish the word ‘struggle’ from your attitude and your vocabulary. All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. Oraibi, Arizona, June 2000

TIME IS MOVEMENT

HOPI PROPHECY

This time is viewed as an amping up of everything. It’s an incred-ible opportunity to discover what we really are. Which is that, even though it seems as though lots is happening to us, the reality is that nothing is happening to us. Life is happening, and now more than ever, we need to realize that we are simply a part of that. Not "it's happening to us", that's separation, that's not the view. The view is "life is happening, and we're a part of it".

GRANDMOTHER WISDOM

Our ancestors have taught us that everything moves, nothing is static, no matter how it appears. Everything is moving. If we pay attention to the move-ment, we are in the river like the Hopi prophecy says.

In the dominant culture, we do things by what time it is. But time is simply a measure of movement. In this case, the Sun around the Earth is how we measure time. But time really isn’t anything. It’s movement.

From our perspective, it’s the movement to be paying at-tention to, not the time. Not December 21st 2012. It’s the movement. Is it amping up? Yes. How come? Because of the movement. The movement of everything is changing. When movement changes everything is impacted. Particularly when we’re talking the movement of whole systems. Whole systems are moving. Economic systems: moving, social systems: moving. Educational systems:

moving, health care systems: m o v i n g , p l ane ta r y s y s t e m s : moving. It’s about the move-ment. So if I realize that, the movement isn’t happening to me. If I realize that I’m part of that movement, then like the prophecy says, I look around to see who is in that movement with me.

Don’t grab onto the banks. Even though there might be a huge temptation to grab onto the bank of education, or grab onto the bank of drugs, or the bank of the banks… No no. Be part of the movement. So I notice who’s in the movement with me, and like the prophecy says, “celebrate!” Celebrate doesn’t mean it’s all shits and giggles. In that context, cel-ebrate means I open my heart.

Use your mind de l iberate ly to recall a time when you touched s o m e o n e with kind-ness. Our

bodies hold memories, and

not just traumatic memories, good

memories too. Take your left hand and

bring it up to your heart. Imagine bringing that body

memory of touching another with kindness, through this arm and hand so that now this hand is touching this body with kindness. And over and over, no matter what your mind is doing, let your attention rest in the space beneath this hand, as this hand touches this body with kindness.

What we discover is that as soon as my left hand rests on the heart, the limbic brain starts

to soothe and the right brain opens. And it’s my right brain that I want to activate. My left brain is very linear, black and white, “if that, then this,” it’s very analytic. I don’t want to activate that, that’s already activated. I want to activate the spacious-ness of “hmm what are the possibilities?” The eagle view, of “hmm look at all this space ..hmm is it really that black and white?” The right brain is much more grey.

It literally changes the electro-magnetic energy of our bodies, when we do that simple prac-tice. So, that would be a prac-tice that I would recommend. It’s just a matter of doing it, mind you, not just knowledge, like “oh ya, I know what to do, I’m not doing it.” (laughs) Mitakuye Oyasin

It all started with one struggling survivor. One little orphan survived the 1935 Kiwi propaga-tion project which saw all but this one fruit-ing vine fail to take root in a special USDA growing facility in California. Now home to over 10 000 acres of American kiwis (Actin-idia Deliciosa) this lone little orphan became the mother plant from which every thriving Kiwi in the USA has grown.

Before 1910 the Kiwi was grown only in China where it was abundant along the

banks of the Yangtze River reaching hieghts of over 30 feet. A New Zealand native, Isabel Fraser, smuggled a few seeds on her return to New Zealand from a trip to the Orient. The rare homeless seeds found their way into the green thumbed hands of one Alexander Allison who is considered historically as the Great Uncle of the Kiwi fruit. The Kiwi flour-ished in the Bay of Plenty and it was from these vineyards that our friend, the orphan plant, was taken. Between 1940 and 1970 the Kiwi prospect grew dormant and the Kiwi crops langered until the brothers Tanimoto who together jump started what is now a flourishing Kiwi market in the USA. By 1971 with only one acre of vines, the Tanimoto Brothers began shipping this strange fuzzy delight to a population ready for a new flight-less fruit. mc

Power plants are a legitimate way to remind us that the real world is very dif-ferent from the misshapen universe we have created for ourselves by means of our cultured-conditioned prejudices. Aldous Huxley

Nature is not something other than human life; we are part of Nature, deeply related to the whole design, an inseparable part of all the connective tissues of existence itself. We are inside Nature, and like a great mother who sees that her children have fouled themselves, have failed to come home when called, are getting up to serious mischief, and are in great peril, she is going to remind us what time it is, where we are, and who we are… And who she is. James O'deaexcerpt from The Mystery of 2012, Sounds True Inc.

First we need to understand that Ayahuasca, San Pedro, Peyote and other Sacred Power plants are “entheogens”, coined from Greek roots meaning

“to realize the divine within.” The entheogens are different to drugs such as cocaine, heroin and speed since they are

low in addiction potential and overdose risk, and are of very low organic toxicity.

It is vital to relate to these power plants in a proper manner using them in ritual settings and context. By using them in a skillful and respectful manner they can heal and transform lives in wonderful ways and free us from the imprisonment of our limited mind sets. Like fire, they are not to be played with casually or used in a irresponsible way.

At the end the real value of the ceremony is what you do with it, how it serve you to live a better life and enhance all

your actions and relationships. In other words, how to bring it back home. Diego Palma www.ayahuasca-wasi.com

Visionary, healing, spirit-invoking plants have been widely used since time immemorial. From Neolithic shamans buried with their pipes and plant residues, to the spirit-flight iconography of ancient cave paintings, and the use of "soma" in the Rig Veda of ancient India; the spiritual, medicinal, therapeutic, and divinatory uses of these plants have continued as living practices and are still em-ployed by in the jungles, forests, plains, and mountains, as well as a growing presence in cities and global cultural centres. DIVINATION

December 21 2012 marks the beginning of a significant cosmic shift. What exactly does this mean for us moving forward? Turning to the tarot for guidance, Aleis-ter Crowley’s eight of disks emerged. From a purely symbolic standpoint, eight on its side represents infinity –

the possibilities are indeed infinite. Following suit with the cosmic changes, many people are choosing to walk the path of awakening to their infinite potential. With the eight of disks linked astrologically to the sun in Virgo, we are advised to put that beaming sun energy into creating balance in our lives. Extremes are to be avoided. Moreover, since disks rep-resent the earthly realm, we are encouraged to prepare for the changing times in a practi-cal Virgo-like way – to ensure that our health and finances and other earthly matters are in the flow.In this state we will be able to invite the new seeds of consciousness to bloom in the most beautiful way. Ashley Hain

TAROT TIME

MICHAEL O’CONNOR SPEAKS

“We're not in creation, we are creation.”

The six of disks, called success, in the Thoth tarot deck is the centre card of the spread I did. It represents the materialization of the will of the stars, as-trological determinism so to speak. It indi-cates that all will go as planned in our preces-sion of the equinoxes. We have a certain degree of free will as

to what “degree” of our best future we mani-fest. In other words, things are predetermined to a degree, but are not set in stone. This card is an omen that we will achieve our highest potentiality, and will not falter from our “best fate”. The Prince of Cups is shown presently in the mind, indicating looking down into the hear, the conscience, and being stung then transformed by this emotion. Below, in the heart, is shown the Tower, the collapse of the old self and world view as a result of the opening of the third eye (eye of shiva/horus).

Combining the meaning of the cards, it shows humanity having a turn of heart, a radical shift in world-view, like a sudden epiphany, and turning in a more positive, balanced direction. We connect back to our heart centre, asking “how do we feel now”, and the result of that is radical transformation. The six of disks in-dicates that this entire process belongs to a long cycle of evolution, and all is moving ac-cording to plan, regardless of how off course some of us may feel. Ayam Abraxas

ASTRO-CLIMATOLOGYIn this era, we are crossing the highly charged Galactic plane; it’s the apex of a macro-cycle and the beginning of another higher frequency cycle. We are scientifical-ly measuring an exponentially increasing influx of the highest frequencies, activat-ing, quickening and thus warming all local planets.

This is a period of highly increased energy. This potentiation means it is easier to change things. Our capacity is highly en-ergized and there is greater opportunity and responsibility. Where we direct our energy and focus is reflected back to us

with greater amplitude and expediency. It is key to focus on the beneficial, and clear outmoded and dysfunctional patterning. The time has come to “re-program the ho-logram mainframe”.

This is why it’s so important to feed positive intentions and actions into it, as ‘energy follows conscious focus’, and what we support or feed thrives accordingly and visa versa. What we are doing is self-ful-filling prophecy. Dave Hurst

SUCCESS

In western astrology we have the classical divine spark, and in that spark is more than just a cerebral intelligence, it’s a life force of all-knowing consciousness. We have linear consciousness in our brain which is it’s own gift, it helps us to filter consciousness, oth-erwise we’d probably go mad. We’re meant to be in limitation for good reason. It can be fun, it’s wonderful, it’s its own joy. Make the most of what you’ve got and see the value of it because on a personality level you are temporary anyway. At a deeper level there’s a lot more going on.

All of creation is sourced in sound. Creation is happening at every nanosecond, like a repeat-ing, resonating principal. Sound is the source of creation and if the sound from the source, call it God if you like, stopped, everything would just disin-tegrate. It would implode. So you get this beautiful notion of sound resonance, fre-quency, vibration, the ever present now creating again and again.

It's not just that the Sun's in the sky; we live in the sun. The Sun's

energy field goes out for one light day into space. It creates the helio-

pause, a membrane around the sun that could be illustrated as an egg. We more or less live in the white of the egg.

Every sun, every star, has it's own unique molecular structure, and

so every one is like a differ-ent person. They're actually known in cosmic languages as cosmic citizens.

The Mayan cosmology "end date" is syn-chronizing with the birth of a global culture. A birthing process is painful, but the baby gets born, and there's more in it as a positive than a negative. This is a definite time of massive awakening.

DAWN OF THE AQUARIAN AGE

The long night is over. No longer will we swim in circles like fish in the dark beneath the moon. “Except ye become as little children, ye cannot enter into the Kingdom of Heaven”. It is the end of oppression by the church and state, the reign of the Emperor is over, and the Aquar-ian Goddess takes her place upon the throne of Earth. We will return to harmony with the environment, as our 4 000 year digression was part of a long, as-trological cycle.

We are now in the Aeon of Horus, the child, who repre-sents the balance of our mascu-line and feminine energies as a planet, just as the union of the mother and the father produced the Son, and now, the daughter. The Emperor, or the Father, rep-resents our cities, our society, while the Empress, the Mother, is the Earth. The seven chakra seals open and we return to wisdom of the child, freed from materialism and blown about by the breath of synchronicity. It is the beginning of a new Golden Age, the New Earth as foretold in ancient prophecy. Gabrielle’s horn, faint at first, blows louder and louder, till the spiritually dead rise from their graves, be-holding revelation. Ayam Abraxas

SNOWBOARDING

A stiff molded support behind the heel and up the calf area. The HyBak was originally designed by inventor Jeff Grell and built by Flite Snowboards. This allows the rider to apply pressure and effect a “heelside” turn.

Jake Burton, developed a snurferlike model into a legitimate sporting good. Footstraps for better control, fins for more stability,a and metal edges. In 1977, he founded his namesake company which has innovated the most in the sport. Other pioneers in-cluded Tom Sims, Chuck Barfoot, Winter-stick, Gnu, HoogerBooger and Avalanche, all bringing a unique innovation to the pro-totype equipment.

Snowboarding’s first professionals pio-neered terrain, equipment and maneu-vers in a relatively untapped realm of potential. Terry Kidwell, riding for Sims, was an innovator in the freestyle half-pipe, winning most competitions in the early 80’s.

Craig Kelly, Snowboarding’s original superstar, was unbeatable for most of the mid to late 80’s, and then became a back country legend, bringing snow-boarding to the early cat skiing and he-licopter operations of BC in the 90’s. He died tragically in an avalanche in 2007.

The godfather of modern snowboard-ing began his reign in 1987 at the age of 15, and dominated the 90’s as one of the next generation of rising snowboard talents. Terje Haakonsen’s 20 year career saw him innovate much of what has become standard in a mountain freerider’s repertoire, inlcuding invert-ed spins, huge outdoor kickers, Alaskan first descents, setting the stage for the film revolution and equipment boom that has swept the past 2 decades.

The late 80’s and early 90’s brought a drastic evolution of style, amplitude and terrain. Big board companies were sending their seasoned vets on heli trips, while legions of new young rippers crossing over from skate-boarding were invading the ski areas jumping off and on everything in sight, giving birth to the term jibbing, soon standardized to launches, rails and boxes in terrain parks. The rise of the all around freerider began.

The 1996 Olympics in Nagano saw the sport achieve worldwide recognition. With the first freestyle and racing events ever held in the Games, the sport entered an era of rapid growth and dispute. Some notable snowboarders were unwilling to have the sport judged by skiers, and skiers were unwilling to allow the fledgling sport to manage its own judging. This schism still exists.

This is also the Olympics where Ross Reba-gliatti of Whistler BC won the downhill event only to have his medal stripped for marijuana use. The medal was reinstated the next day.

A revolution in board construction was begun in the mid 90’s but exploded into prominence in the early 2000’s. Awareness of camber and sidecut was giving birth to twintip freestyle boards de-signed to be functional for riders who wanted to be able to ride both directions. This decade saw enormous innovation of everything from boards to outerwear. Big mountain freeriding and inner city/ park freestyle brought new technical concerns to the table. Throughout the 2K’s board manufac-turers have sought to out innovate each other in terms of materials, shapes, and graphics. Profes-sional riders give input to companies to help them produce increasingly responsive products. The trend continues.

Young surf freak Sherman Poppen envisioned a surfboard for the snow. The first version was a 1.2 meter long plastic plank: two kids’ skis bolted to-gether. One year later, in 1965, his idea was put into production: Carried out together with a bowling-ball manufacturer, the now called “snurfer” sold over a million units in 10 years.

The big money revolution in snowboarding really kicked in to high gear in the mid 2000’s as energy drink companies like Red Bull began pumping endless resources into the best riders. The result was mega stars such as Travis Rice who took the sport to unprecedented levels in both the compe-tition and freeride backcountry worlds. The 2010 Olympics thrust Shaun White to global promi-nence with his gold medal halfpipe run, one of the most watched sports events of the new olympic era. Red bull had built him his own secret training facility. In 2012 Travis Rice bridged the competition and freeride world with the event Supernatural, taking place at Baldface Catskiing, building a course of kickers and features on a natural mountain face and inviting the top riders in the world to compete. The next level has arrived.

WINTER TECH RECThe Polaris RZR is well known for power, reliability, style and flair. Grins are guaranteed each time you go squirt some dirt with this machine. You get aggressive sound without excessive noise, all within the legal limits. Safety and luxury. Turbos lend not only a WOO HOO factor, but they can also provide a little extra oomph to get you out of jams, granted some people use the extra bit of horsepower to get themselves into more pickles... Either way, the fun factor is boosted along with the RZR!

Wow factor, that’s what it’s all about sometimes. I recently watched an episode of Duck Dynasty. You guessed it, the side by side of choice for the most elite Rednecks, the Polaris RZR. “Trish, did you climb anything cool? Did you take any jumps? Did you hit any trees?” Forty-two little eyes stared at me, waiting for the week’s stories of my sledding adventures on the Salmo-Creston pass in B.C. in the winter of 2011. I laughed at how my new bruises and stories of stucks and trees made me 10 feet tall in their eyes. So many of them shared an intense passion for the outdoors.

These kids were my senior physical education students from the Homelinks Learning Program in Creston, B.C. The Canadian Avalanche Centre provided a wealth of knowledge and resources. The curriculum encompassed many topics, in-cluding frostbite and frostnip, hypothermia, dressing in layers, safety equipment and how to use it effectively, avalanche awareness, how to pack a daypack for winter sports, winter shelters and how to light a fire in the winter.

Some had never seen a beacon let alone been taught to use one. Living on the Salmo-Creston these kids absolutely needed this awareness. Knowledge is the key. One young man asked if he could share his 4-H speech with the class. We were in our third week of classes at this

point and he was very motivated to learn all he could about sur-vival. On his own, he purchased Les Stroud’s book, Will To Live. There was no way this kid was going to perish in the outdoors. His speech was awesome, and it really inspired me. These kids need us. They are so open to learn from the ones who share the same passion for the sports they crave. While they may idolize the air we catch on our sleds, or the climb we execute, they need us to teach them how to be responsible, educated outdoor enthusiasts. Not only must we practise what we preach but we must also be aware that we have the opportunity to make a differ-ence. These kids are the sled-ders of tomorrow. Take the time to reach out to the youth in your community. It really does make a difference. Trish Dinkle

INSTANT COFFEE

EMERGENCY ITEM #33:

1900 Instant Coffee is invented by Japanese inventor Satori Kato.

1901 Luigi Bezerra invents the world’s first espresso machine the Tipo Giganta.

1903 A shipment of coffee beans arrives at the warehouse of German coffee importer Ludwig Rossillius completely soaked and ruined from their journey from Nicaragua. The soaking of the coffee had accidentally decaffeinated the coffee and the world witnesses the birth of de-caf.

1906 Inventor George Washington, not that one, perfected the process of “mass produced” instant coffee later marketed as Red-i Coffee.

1908 Melitta Benze improvises a coffee filter made from her son’s blotting paper. The Mellitta filter revolutionizes coffee preparation.

1920 Prohibition creates a whole nation of booze lovers with no booze available. Reefer was still in short supply so coffee became the drug of choice.

1926 Coffee is declared “beneficial” by the Food and Drug ad-ministration.

1942 Maxwell House instant coffee is the coffee for the rations kits of American soldiers and is said to be the reason they didn’t get creamed.

1950 Achille Gaggia improves on the espresso machine utilizing a piston system. The resulting “crema” marked the introduction of the Cappuccino.

1956 The beat poets are born. Intellectuals are now cool. The cof-feehouse of the fifties became the hub of the free thinkers.

1966 Alfred Peet, son of a Dutch roaster opens Peet’s Coffee in Berkely California where he introduces “dark roast” to the world.

1971 English teacher Jerry Baldwin, history teacher Zev Zeigl and writer Gordon Bowkre learn the technique of dark roasting from Alfred Peet and open the first Starbucks in Seattle Washington.

1972 Baseball hero Joe DiMaggio becomes pitchman for Mr. Coffee which in turn becomes the best selling coffee machine ever.

1982 Drip coffee salesman Howard Schultz visits Milan and real-izes that there are 200 000 cafes full of coffee drinkers. Schultz returns to America where he convinces the boys at Starbucks that they should sell coffee to drink as well as their trademark beans. Starbucks the coffeehouse is erected.

1993 Oso Negro awakens in Nelson British Columbia.

2000 Tim Horton’s is blocked from opening in Nelson BC.

2011 Kootenay Time introduces it’s signature espresso drink, the Half Nelson, creating a taste sensation.

QUAD MAN OUTIt's always nice to be around for the birth of a new word. Quadshot is one of these words. It's a fun word to say. And it says a lot about the person saying it… It says this person is serious about their caffeine and probably fun to hang out with. So as coffee drinking evolves so does the language. A quad - shot is four shots of espresso either straight up or in any coffee variation of choice. If you have yet to order a quad-shot... the time is now. Michael

NELSON FOOD FRONTLINEOften the cooks and chefs of all the awesome food we eat daily go unnoticed. And not that they aren't appreciated it's just that they exist, many times, behind walls and through little kitchen windows and are rarely seen. They slave away in hot busy kitchens working intently on all the deliciousness that keeps us warm throughout the winter months. Be it the short order cook kicking' out some golden brown crinkle cuts or the highly

A German immigrant named Frederick William Rueckheim invented Cracker Jack. Rueckheim came to Chicago in 1872 to help clean up after the famous Chicago fire. He also worked selling popcorn from a cart. Together with brother Louis, Rueckheim ex-perimented and came up with a delightful popcorn candy, which the brothers decided to mass market. Cracker Jack was first mass-produced and sold at the first Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. The Ferris Wheel, Aunt Jemima pancakes, and the ice cream cone were also introduced at the event.

In 1912, toy surprises were first put into every Cracker Jack box. Since then over 17 billion toys have been put into boxes. Michael

Sushi was originally pronounced “zushi” which simply means the process of preserving fish. Like all cultures in search of methods to preserve their food before the convenience of refrigerators, the Japanese were using bamboo and shiso leaves, seaweeds, vinegars for pickling and an array of smoking techniques. Fish that are salted and placed in boiled rice are preserved by lactic acid fermentation, and it was through this process that sushi was born. The preparation of sushi is indeed an art form and is best taken on with knowledge and passion; from choosing high quality ingredients to feeling in good spirits while preparing those ingredients, focusing on detail and perfection all the way down to the colours and textures and appearance of the final product. To become an authenticated sushi chef one must undergo 7-10 years of training, 3 of those years being solely for blowfish, or “fugu apprenticeship”. A ticketed sushi chef is given much respect both in public or on the job and carries with him always a very high sense of honour and a hard work ethic.

In the west, sushi has gained super-stardom and has evolved into many wonderful and untraditional

dishes, and of course the more adven-turous you are and willing to eat the

better the culinary reward. What is it about blazing a trail just for those special hole in the wall experiences anyway? I guess without them, Volcano Rolls and Sexy Salmons and Black n Blue Rolls might never

Hurricane Sandy may prove to be the extreme weather event that finally wakes people up to the huge impact of climate change. Fossil fuel carbon emissions are building a global crisis that threatens us all. It’s already too late to prevent climate change, but we still have the opportunity to prevent it from becoming an ecological disaster. As our path to survival narrows, we begin to see how the trails converge. To protect biodiversity, to conserve energy, to reduce waste, to live harmoniously with our neighbors - these goals require an engaged

community that recognizes our inter-relationship. The narrowing path tempts us to focus on small steps, but we need a great leap. In addition to shifting our practices as individu-als, we must transform our body politic. The motto for the coming age must be “we’re all in this to-gether” instead of “every man for himself.” As a community and as an electorate, we must demand and contribute visionary leader-ship, courage, and – above all – participation for the common good. David Reid EcoSociety.ca

Think about food security. How can a mountain community sustain itself? Envision this: Every person with land to spare plants 10 fruit trees per year for the next 5 years. Okay, so not every person has that much land. So donate your trees to a friend’s property! Pay it forward. Inter-relate.No matter what, we can always do with more fruit trees.

Got a sloping property? Dig “swales” on a contour with the natural curve of your land to passively catch rainwater so that it stores in the landscape rather than evaporate like in grassy conventional orchards. No more watering! Interplant your fruit trees with fruit bushes and comfrey to feed nitrogen to the soil. Make it a food forest! It will take care of itself. Furthermore, love your food, it will love you back. Scott East

In 1969 a thousand person del-egation from the island of West Irian Jaya, now West Papua New Guinea, became the prime mover in a sequence that would see close to half a million people killed in 40 years of terror by the brutal Indonesian Army. En-titled the New York Project and overseen by the United Nations, West Papua, with it's own flag, it's own national anthem and it's own identity was now being forced to participate in a false democracy that would ensure Indonesia maintained the own-ership of this most abundant land. One thousand representa-tives would assist in the lower-ing of the proudly flown Papuan Morning Star flag, the flying of which in 1969 became the cause of innumerable deaths.

Ironically chronicled as the "Act of Free Choice" this shameful day has lasted four plus decades

and is now escalating to abso-lute chaos on this massive for-gotten continent. Not surprisingly much of the violence and contro-versy centres around the gar-gantuan Freeport copper mine with the usual suspects but the real nemesis is Jakarta and it's extremely sadistic treatment of a population that already spent 300+ years under Dutch colonial rule. One thousand token repre-sentatives determined the fate of five million people.

The leaders of the Free Papua movement are targets for the Australian trained Densus 88 (special forces unit) who are re-portedly carrying Canadian made M16s known globally as the C7. Mako Tibuni, the latest hero of the West Papuan struggle, was killed in June 2012. Not surpris-ingly it is being swept under the carpet. West Papua struggle leader Benny Wenda was re-cently relieved of his RED status imposed by the Indonesian gov-ernment who was discovered in the case as fabricating evidence against this peaceful protester. Although the bow and arrow is the weapon of choice for the indigenous Papuans, gunfights from the backs of motorcycles are now the norm. Michael

OH CANADA

The Harper government has been building “super-prisons” as part of its $1.7 billion corrections boom. Today Canada hosts over 190 corectional service facilities with 22 more under construction.

Doom-laden prognostications abound at this time. Canada too is on a spiral of deterioration with the economic, environmen-tal and political direction set by Stephen Harper and endorsed by Canadian voters. I do not believe any more that we will turn this thing around by politics, institutions or new systems, but never mind. I still go on acting to stop the forces of ”evil” — for such the master of our capitalist reality seem to me, though we ourselves are responsible for not resisting them better. All acts of resistance to the entropy of our times are acts of love for our planet and humanity.

Don’t act because you expect success. Act because it is right. Outcomes are immaterial. Fight for justice, fight for the environ-ment, fight for peace. Win or lose, you are furthering the Great Work: the evolution of human consciousness through love. Love is not a warm feeling or vibe you can send out to heal. It is in action. This is why we have ma-terial incarnation. Being spiritual and doing nothing is an oxymo-ron. Activism matters. In all the coming days, act on your sense of right. It is in love that con-sciousness is transformed, not in thought. Charles Jeanes

The day was December 21 1942. The residents of the sleepy little hamlet of Hanford Washington busily prepared for Christmas. Other towns had been considered as "perfect locations" for building the world's first Atomic Bomb, but Hanford won out for two reasons; its remoteness and its accessibility to the Columbia River. A mere three days before Christmas, twelve-hundred residents of this bucolic little town just four hours south of Nelson BC were delivered a most mys-terious eviction notice.

The United States Government was evicting the entire town for a top secret "war related " project. The top secret project was the Manhat-tan Project. In response to the bombing of Pearl Harbour, the most intensive nuclear initiative ever staged was underway and the sleepy village of Hanford on the Columbia River would become the birthplace of the Fat Boy, the Nuclear Bomb that ended World War II. The Little Boy, the sadistic junior version, was being worked on simultaneously ironically at Location Y in Los Alamos New Mexico. Once occupied, the clearing of the land for the ensuing mega-project transformed the entire 600 square mile region into a dustbowl that was continually plagued by what became known as "termination winds" for their pro-pensity for causing inordinate amounts of Nuclear Plant workers to defect on the next bus out of town.

Today the only reminder of the previous civilization is the skeleton of the high school. The homeowners who were meagerly compen-sated after the war have all expired. The fantasies of the Christmas that never was have joined the vapors of the infamous Reactor B. The dossiers of the hundreds of thousands of employees who were enticed to the site's remoteness for $10 a day wages are sealed and dormant at some top secret vault and the Hanford Site is now the most contaminated Plutonium Plant on the planet. With over 600 000 000 cubic meters of super deadly nuclear waste buried mere miles from the great Columbia Basin and an ominous matrix of un-containable Nuclear Reactors, a meltdown seems inevitable. Every

three minutes 24 hours a day the out-sized dump trucks shuttle the con-

taminants to the largest Nuclear dump on the planet.

Sadly the Kootenays are di-rectly downwind from this most

deadly of monstrosities. Nelson we have a problem. Michael

Unlike the Canda-arm, it fits nicely into your bedside drawer. Like the Canada-arm, the Magic Banana is becoming world renowned for exploration of a much more inner-galactic galaxy. Without ever leaving the mattress women around the planet are now able to go where "no man has gone before." Hergonomically designed by pleasure craft designer Janeson Rayne's, the Magic Banana looks like a cross between a jump rope and an oversized bubble blower so this unique "force multiplier" is unidentifiable to one non-familiar. Jean Giraud aka Moebius may not have been a household name himself, but his influence over science fiction is undeniable. He is regarded by many critics as the artist who changed the look of science fiction from glistening starships into the gritty, ground-level science fiction from such classics as Blade Runner, Alien, and the Fifth Element. Moebius also did the concept art for Tron and Willow, and an unfinished production of Dune with Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky.

Moebius came to fame with his work for a magazine called Metal Hurlant, republished in the US as Heavy Metal, of which he was a founding editor and contribut-ing cartoonist. Moebius created a wide range of science fiction comics in a highly imagina-tive, surreal, and abstract style, the most famous of which are Arzach, the Airtight Garage, and The Incal. John DiFool

So you’ve been looking to buy a new phone lately? I’ve re-cently gone through this: What do I buy? iPhone5 with a retina display? Galaxy S III with the 2 Gigs of Ram? Or the HTC One x with the Beats speaker system? All these phones have their own pros and cons, just like any piece of technology. At the end of the day a person needs to look at what they need their phone for. Do you text? Facebook? Skype? Or do you only want a simple phone to just call people on? Can you even get those anymore? Either way, I’d advise to look at what you need.

Even though I work around Apple products, I purchased the Galaxy S III. Before people freak out at me for not buying an iPhone 5, hear me out. At the end of the day I looked at what I do on my phone and what I want to do. I have a LARGE music collection and at I like the fact the Galaxy S III has a expandable memory slot. This feature of the Galaxy S III is what sold me on it, it best fits my lifestyle. So that is what I suggest; buy the phone that works for you! Do your research and don’t buy what some person or advertisement told you to get. Jono

Sound and music consist of vibrations. The more vibrations per second, the higher the pitch. The unit for this is the Hertz, or Hz. “432 Hz” vibrates on the principals of natural harmonics and is the natural “keynote” in the universe, as opposed to 440 Hz, which is the standard in the music nowadays.432hz vibrates on the principals of the golden mean PHI and unifies the properties of light, time, space, matter, gravity and magnetism with biology, the DNA code and consciousness.

432hz Natural Tuning has profound effects on consciousness and also on the cellu-lar level of our bodies. By retuning musical instruments and using concert pitch at 432 hertz instead of 440 hertz, your DNA starts to resonate in harmony with the PHI spiral of nature. Diego Palma

Buckminster Fuller always had big ideas, including a massive floating city that would have housed 6,000 residents off the coast of Tokyo. The inventor of the geodesic dome imagined taking his spherical creations into the sky with ‘Cloud Nine’, an airborne habitat composed of free-floating or tethered spheres, each one mile in diameter and housing thousands of people. These spheres would function as hot air balloons, and residents would get back and forth with solar-powered aircraft.

Earthships originated and launched in the early 70’s by creator and visionary Michael Reynolds. Earthships are dirt cheap and 100 percent ecological structures that have all the comforts of an ordinary home. They provide electricity, potable water, contained sewage treatment and sustainable food production.

There are now thousands in the USA and hundreds spread throughout Canada, many of which were approved for building code requirements. The rapid global increase in earthship construction continues as people look for affordable, grounded and off grid styles of living. Imagine never paying another utility bill and eating food grown year round in your own home.

These amazing structures do not come with a high cost, but do involve a solid commit-ment of labour and community contribu-tion. THE FUTURE OF BC BUD

The medical marijuana program is not working, and the quicker we bring it down the better. The program forces people who are disabled to grow pot because they can't get it any other way at a reasonable price. Once you pay your shipping, government pot sells at about $200/ounce. A medical mari-juana patient growing his own can grow it for pennies compared to that. And it is a cover for organized crime. When you have people on the Internet saying "give us your license, we'll give all your pot for free, we don't care what your limit is". Who are those guys? The people who have their head in the sand on this are some of the people who are saying the program is working fine, leave it alone, all that. It's crap, it's not working at all, and the quicker we get to realizing that a small legal-ization process will eliminate the need for it.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA

The political battle will be to keep it out of the hands of big business, and spread the revenue and the growing out throughout the countryside. The wine industry model is what they've talked about primarily as the method to do that, where they would license small growers who would grow unique products and sell them at speciality and government stores. With that model you could use a lot of the infrastructure that already exists within the liquor industry.

POST PROHIBITION

I look at pot prohibition and I think if politicians are so lacking in logic and science looking at an issue like this, how can they run the whole country, how can we expect them to be fair to our veterans, or fair to the poor, and enact legislation that's in everybody's good?

Seniors are coming on board, they're seeing the benefits of cannabis as medicine that doesn't complicate their current condition, or burn out their liver, or whatever, there's so many complications to drugs. Cancer clearly is on the mind of every senior out there. It's one of the biggest killers, along with heart conditions. They're looking at anything at this point that holds out promise of something that works with cancer.

SENIORS SMOKE POT

Smoking is going to become relatively passé I feel. Even vaporization, it's popular but it's harsh on the lungs. Smoking will always be there, but I see a whole different range of things out there that are exciting the entre-preneur right now, particularly in edible prod-ucts. This could be a new green wave, like the gold rush. Truly, I'm excited about what it might do for this town.

METHODS OF INGESTION

Marc Emery. I posted a portion of his bail last time he was in Canada, before he was ex-tradicted to the US. Marc and I have been friends for a long time. We sat down and strategized the whole marijuana party to-gether. I did the out front stuff as the leader and he was the president and did all the stuff behind the scenes. We put a candidate in every riding in the province. First time in Canada that's ever been done, in such a short period of time. We got in the history books with that one. The marijuana movement went forward because we went out in front of people and confessed our belief this was wrong, and we got a lot of support for it. The number of votes were almost incidental to the support we got from people when we went out.

FAVOURITE POT ICON?

I think we should be ashamed of ourselves that we're allow-ing him to stay down there, im-prisoned in the States. Canadi-ans should be getting him out of there. [American authorities] swooped into our country and grabbed him for doing some-thing hundreds of other people were doing at the time (selling seeds). They charged Marc to make an example of him. Barry Mc-Caffrey, the US drug war czar during the late 90's, was at a

conference in Vancouver, and Marc bought a table at the

banquet. Marc brought in all of the mouthpieces he could find that would help him, and they harassed the shit out of McCaf-frey for the whole evening. He had Malmo Lavine there, and some of the real talkative and controversial people, and they yelled insults, “liar,” “not true.” I think they finally got thrown out. Marc pissed off heavyweights and they went gunning for him. Marc’s done a lot. He has a persona that you wonder some-times whether it’s built for the media or whether that’s really him. You’ll never know.

POT PRINCE = POLITICAL PRISONER

Stephen Harper, have you ever been high? “No I have not. I was offered a joint once and I was too drunk. But the serious answer is that I am asthmatic and I’ve never smoked anything.”

Jean Chrétien, have you smoked marijuana?"I never tried it. I said I might be able someday to do it. Perhaps I will try it when it will no longer be criminal. I will have my money for my fine and a joint in the other hand."

He and other glass artists are all finding an artistic voice while providing high end functional glass art.“As we push for acceptance of medicinal and recreational marijuana we also see a calling from the community to find cleaner, healthier and more efficient smoking devices,” claims Bergeron. At Urban Legends you can find just about anything a smoker can dream of and they offer a discount to medical card customers. Urban Legends is located at 533 Baker St. or find them on Facebook. WEED REVIEW

GETTING SENSIBLE WITH SENSIIn September 2012 the Union of BC Municipalities voted overwhelm-ingly at their annual meeting to look at ways to decriminalize and tax adults for marijuana. Something long overdue when you consider the evidence and facts that surround marijuana and its use.Sensible BC is using the referendum process (the same one that stopped the HST in BC) to bring in the Sensible Policing Act that would stop police from wasting our tax dollars and resources arrest-ing adults for simple possession of marijuana, effectively bringing in decriminalization. We have former BC attorney generals Colin Gabelmann, Ujjal Dosanjh, Graeme Bowbrick and Geoff Plant as well as sitting MLA Kash Heed, a former BC Public Safety Minis-ter and Police Chief calling for a stop to marijuana prohibition, how many more will it take? Why is Stephen Harper so out of touch and at odds with the people he is supposed to serve?

You can find out more and how to get involved at www.sensiblebc.ca Mik Mann, Cannabis Consultant, Vancouver Island

Hashish [ha-sheesh] is a can-nabis preparation composed of compressed stalked resin glands called trichomes collect-ed from the unfertilized buds of the cannabis plant. It contains the same active ingredients but in higher concentrations than unsifted buds or leaves. Hashish is often a paste-like substance with varying hardness and pliability, its color most commonly light to dark brown but varying toward green, yellow, black or red. Hashish is heated in a pipe, hookah, bong, bubbler, vaporizer, hot knife, smoked in joints mixed with cannabis buds or tobacco, or cooked in foods. thedailyomnivore.net

A GLASS ACT

“The authoritative historical record of the can-nabis plant, marijuana prohibition and how hemp can still save the world.”Exhaustively researched and impeccably written, Jack Herer’s book on pot shows exactly how marijuana ended up illegal and why it remains so. The extent of the conspiracy is shocking!

1/2 cup marijuana butter, 1 oz. bittersweet chocolate, 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup milk, 1/4 cup cocoa, 1/4 cup nuts (optional).Melt and mix on low heat over a double boiler, spread on shallow baking pan, allow to cool and set. Enjoy!

ULTIMATE CHOCOLATE FUDGE

For a person weighing 150lbs who has some experience with Marijuana the dosages are as follows;1/2 to 2 grams of Leaf, or 1/4 to 1 gram of Bud, or 1/8 to 1 gram of Hashish and KeifUsing these guideline 1/4 ounce makes the following number of servings;1/4 ounce Leaf = 4-15 servings, or 1/4 ounce Bud = 8-25 serv-ings, or 1/4 ounce Hashish and Keif = 4-34 servingsRemember that it all depends on the potency of your marijuana. Try it out, test some recipes and know the potency of your butter. Err on the side of caution.

CHRISTMAS

Although the modern image of Santa Claus was created

at least in part by the ad-vertising department of

Coca-Cola, in truth his appearance,

clothing, man-nerisms and companions all mark him as the reincarna-tion of ancient m u s h r o o m -g a t h e r i n g shamans.

One of the side effects of eating

a m a n i t a mushrooms is

that the skin and facial features take on a flushed, ruddy glow. This is why Santa is always shown with glowing red cheeks and nose. Even Santa’s jolly “Ho, ho, ho!” is the euphoric laugh of one who has indulged in the magic fungus.

Santa also dresses like a mushroom gatherer. When it was time to go out and harvest the magical mushrooms, the ancient shamans would dress much like Santa, wearing red and white fur-trimmed coats and long black boots. These peoples lived in dwellings made of birch and reindeer hide, called “yurts.” Somewhat similar to a teepee, the yurt’s central smokehole is often also used as an entrance, just as Santa enters through the chimney. After gathering the mush-rooms from under the sacred trees where they appeared, the shamans would fill their sacks and return home. Climbing down the chimney-entrances, they would share out the mushroom’s gifts with those within.

The amanita mushroom needs to be dried before being consumed; the drying process reduces the mushroom’s tox-icity while increasing its potency. The shaman would guide the group in string-ing the mushrooms and hanging them around the hearth-fire to dry. This tradi-tion is echoed in the modern stringing of popcorn and other items.

The smokehole was the portal where the spirit of the shaman exited the physical plane. Santa’s famous magical journey, where his sleigh takes him around the whole planet in a single night, is devel-oped from the “heavenly chariot,” used by the gods from whom Santa and other shamanic figures are descend-ed. The chariot of Odin, Thor and even the Egyptian god Osiris is now known as the Big Dipper, which circles around the North Star in a 24-hour period. In different versions of the ancient story, the chariot was pulled by rein-deer or horses. As the animals grow e x h a u s t e d , their mingled spit and blood falls to the ground, forming the amanita m u s h r o o m s . DoseNation.com

Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar are the names of the “three wisemen”, or magi, of the bible nativity story. Following a rising star, they made a long pilgrimage to Bethlehem to witness the prophesied birth of a great leader. They brought gifts of expensive oils and incense from the east which were extraordinary for the son of a carpenter from Galilee. These wise men were thought to have been astrologers and mystics aware of the movements of the heavens.

In pre-Christian Rome, the emperors compelled their citizens to bring offerings and gifts during the Saturnalia. Later, this ritual expanded to include gift-giving among the general populace. The Catho-lic Church gave this custom a Christian flavour by re-rooting it in the supposed gift-giving of Saint Nicholas.

Just as early Christians recruited Roman pagans by associating Christmas with the Saturnalia, so too worshippers of the Asheira cult and its offshoots were recruit-ed by the Church sanctioning “Christmas Trees”. Pagans had long worshipped trees in the forest, or brought them into their homes and decorated them, and this observance was adopted and painted with a Christian veneer by the Church.

Norse mythology recounts how the god Balder was killed using a mistletoe arrow by his rival god Hoder while fighting for the female Nanna. Druid rituals use mis-tletoe to poison their human sacrificial victim. The Christian custom of “kissing under the mistletoe” is a later synthesis of the sexual license of Saturnalia with the Druidic sacrificial cult.

LOCAL ART

Art awakens the imagination and allows the magic in! Art teaches children to take risks and learn from mistakes, and that there can be more than one solution to the same problem. Art fosters open-ended thinking and creates an environment of questions rather than answers. At 4Cats Arts Studios kids work in a variety of mediums. If studying Picasso, we create acrylic on canvas cubist paintings and ceramics. If studying Van Gogh, we create acrylic on canvas paintings using modelling paste and quick brush strokes, just like Van Gogh did himself. Visit our studio, and let us show you what makes the 4Cats experience truly amazing! Art is Good!Melanie Ward Artist | Curator | Owner 4Cats Arts Studio - Nelson www.4cats.com/nelson

BUCK THE SYSTEM

Eli

4CATS IS FOR KIDS

/ˈlōkəl’ärt/: 1. Belonging or relating to a particular area or neighborhood, typically exclusively so. 2. The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form.

In a town where true street art is almost unheard of and the wall paintings look like something out of readers’ indigestion, a true stencil hero arrives on the scene to correct the situation. While the weiner taggers ruin the townscape with a messy campaign of signature idiocy, as well ruining the scene for au-thentic guerrillas, the hard core multiple stencil work of Buck D is proof that true art can happen anywhere. The featured congregation of neo-Buckites are gath-ered on the back wall of the bottle n can depot right in front of the Cottonwood M arket alleyway in west Nelson. The stencils are huge and the subject matter is clever modern pop with a funky throw back feel. If wallspace is the final urban frontier then Buck D is the Obi Wan Kenobi. mc

“It still gets me after all this time… the trace looks daunting, the details macro-ed out by the billion but as the razor slides through the bristol bond and knocks out the pieces one by one… you notice your index finger itches to be resting heavily on the top of a fat cap.” Buck D Addams aka Dissent thegrazing.com

Like many things, Kootenay Times Moonly magazine happened by accident. A combination of elements all collided amongst a group of creative types in Nelson who agreed that the fact that there was no local under-ground press and that having only the Black Press was not cool. With little to no experience in publishing, The Team set to work on our first issue, Who is Demo? in June which was followed monthly by four more, the fifth being the one you are reading now. In launching a contemporary community paper that re-flected the Kootenays, we were challenged only by the over abundance of material and our limited space, man-power and Father Time. As a result of this challenge,

we have decided to make Kootenay Times a quarterly seasonal magazine. It will now be published in concert with the seasons which means less frequency but more content. The magazine's trademark layout style is called jambalaya journalism and is designed to reflect society's ever shorter attention span coupled with our voracious appetite for information. Our unique design has proven difficult to read for some yet difficult to "not read" for most. We hope you are entertained by our effort. We now publish 5 000 copies which are delivered across the west Kootenays and all along highway 3. Our dream is to deliver the magazine across British Columbia. Our dream is in your hands. Thank you for reading.

MUGWORTARTEMESIA

Isaac Mills is a digital painter and designer from the east coast of Canada. He chose the moniker “Mugwort’ to embody his intention as an artist. Mugwort artemisia is a sacred tool used by ancients for lucid dreaming and astral projection, and much of his art blossoms from scat-tered sensory recollections of his own dreams. He seeks to strengthen the flow between the gateway of the dreaming and waking worlds, to open imaginal portals for the viewers and to guide them to an internal temple of inspiration and awakening. Much of his work is thematically centred around a paradigm shift that he sees happening around him in the world, and portrays archetypal forces, ancestral depths, evolution and shamanic symbolism. Visually synthesizing windows into both the bygone industrial era and a multitude of potential future realities, he anticipates the brink of time. His art has been displayed at galleries and festivals in Canada, Australia the US and Europe.

“I seek to represent imaginal journeys and dreams as crystallized visions, in order to help remind the waking world of the dreaming. Practicing visual art since early childhood, drawing and painting have always been natural outlets. When I switched to digital painting in 2009, I discovered that with this new medium I was able to portray my visions more accurately, in higher resolution.”
