! Spring (as a requirement of DED075) – Take the CORE Exam as administered by ETS. You do

not have to take this test if you received a score on your ACT 22 or higher. The further you take away from high school, the more likely you are to forget some of the information

! Meet with Dr. Payne early in the fall semester to plan the sequence of courses for your college

career that will be the most efficient. If you plan on taking Block 1 during the summer between your Sophomore and Junior year, you must take Statistics during the Fall of your Sophomore year. You may transfer in a Statistics course from another school (community college). You are not allowed admission into the Teacher Education Program until your Statistics grade is posted.

Forms can be downloaded at http://www.k-state.edu/musiceducation College of Education Vision: Preparing educators to be knowledgeable, ethical, caring decision makers.

There are two areas in this professional development component of your teacher preparation: ! Professional growth/service to the profession and ! Educational service to youth and families or caregivers.

In both areas, hours must be accrued while an undergraduate or graduate certificate student and may not be for pay or as a requirement for a class. Hours as they pertain to Music Education Majors

! You must report your service hours to the College of Education the semester prior to your student teaching. ! Your hours have been built into the curriculum and your experiences here at K-State. ! The following three steps will help you to prepare the documentation form located at the end of this

document.

1) Complete MUSIC 511, MUSIC 512, and MUSIC 670 a) In these courses you will submit copies of the forms (The originals will be for your own documentation and eportfolio) documenting your professional hours outside of the curriculum. b) Following completion of these three classes, you will obtain the signatures (three in all) of Dr. Payne or Dr. Fallin to signify your completion of the hours. 2) Obtain the signature or Teri Breymeyer to document your completion of Recital Attendance which accounts for 10 hours of your professional growth. 3) You will submit the signature form (4 signatures total) to Bluemont 261 for documentation of your professional hours.

1. Professional Growth/Service to the Profession ! 20 hours required, with a minimum of 5 in each of the following categories: ! Professional growth: Attending professional/educational meetings (i.e. KMEA, ACDA, KMTA, etc.) ,

! 20 hours required, with a minimum of 10 hours directly with youth (i.e. lessons, sectionals, assisting in rehearsals), including two hours with youth of diverse population(s). The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education has defined diversity as: Differences among groups of people and individuals based on ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, gender, exceptionalities, language, religion, sexual orientation, and geographical area.

! Examples for fulfilling this requirement of service to youth and families through education-related experiences include: supervising after-school programs or field trips; unpaid ensemble coaching or tutoring; helping in organizing or judging music festivals; working at Future Music Educators Day, working sectionals at local schools, assisting directors with rehearsals, helping with religious education; participating in community organizations which involve youth and/or their families or caregivers.
