At Carolina Housing, our focus -- in one word -- is community. We firmly believe that through the creation of a strong community, you have a greater sense of belonging and clearer path to academic success. Living on campus and getting involved in your campus community can be one of the most rewarding experiences in college. And, it’s a great way to be at the heart of the Carolina experience! Did you know that Carolina Housing is home to over 9,500 on-campus residents?

I am confident when I say that it’s pretty hard to find a staff more committed to ensuring that Carolina’s residence halls are places where diversity and inclusion are part of the fabric of how we live and learn together. Our halls are managed by Community Directors (CDs), Resident Assistants (RAs), along with other staff to help you navigate your time at Carolina. Over 450 professional and student staff members have been selected and trained to create and support a welcoming, safe and inclusive living environment that is conducive to your academic, personal and social endeavors.

Did you realize that once you choose to become a Tar Heel you immediately become a member of Carolina Housing’s First Year Experience? As an FYE participant, you will not be led around campus in a group or have your free time overly structured. The

program’s resources are there for you when you need them. From academic to educational programs to cultural and recreational events, we encourage you to participate and take advantage of the opportunities of living in a learning-centered environment.

Carolina Housing is a dynamic place that is continuously evolving and improving. Your input and feedback is essential. Drop by our office, say hi! Let us know how we can be of help, ask us questions, and give suggestions on how we can get even better. Overall, I encourage you to

Congratulations on your admittance to Carolina! Here you will find a home. This is where a lifetime of success begins.

I knew from my first day on campus in 1995, when I arrived to serve as a faculty member, that this was a special place where anything is possible. Our faculty – respected around the world as leaders in their fields – will provide you with the guidance, resources and opportunities you need to seek and fulfill your dreams. They help our students build their own companies, invent new ways of healing and explore the creative freedom of the arts. Our dedicated staff, including the housing and residential education team, put their all into creating a wonderful place to live, study and experience the extraordinary. I also want you to know that you have an important voice on our campus. When you graduate, some of your most powerful memories will come from actions you’ve taken at Carolina. I know you will make a difference in our community.

You must submit a housing application by May 15 at myhousing.unc.edu in order to be entered in the housing lottery for the 2019-20 school year! If you miss this deadline, no problem! You can still apply for housing after May 15, however, you will not be entered in the housing lottery. You may not get your first choice, but you’ll still get a great room!

Other than exploring the native origins of Trinidadian people during the periods of colonization through our activities, my favorite part was meeting an older woman from London with Trinidadian decent who absolutely loved North Carolina and talked about her experience traveling back to Trinidad.

We also went to a pan yard/steel pan practice today and that was really fun! I really enjoy music and the vibrations you feel in your body from it, so that was a great experience.“

This fully-funded trip - includes flights, ground transportation, hotel accommodations, activities, tours and passports fees! - allows nine first-year students with limited to no travel experience to embark on a facilitated trip with their peers to the nation of Trinidad and Tobago. This trip is intentionally designed to expose such students to the possibilities awaiting them as Carolina students and hopefully help to launch a passion and excitement to continue exploring the world to understand different perspectives.

The experience typically involves activities that allow students to visit and learn from students at the University of the West Indies, explore race and cultural relationships, understand the historical context of Trinidad and Tobago, learn about the origination of the steel pan drum, and numerous opportunities to engage in the diverse culture that make up this incredible nation.

How Can I Apply?

The application typically opens over the summer. Don’t worry, once live, the application will be posted on the Carolina Housing website and you will receive a direct email as an incoming first year student with more details about the application process and deadlines. Keep in mind that priority will be given to students who have limited to no travel experience.

2018 Trip to Trinidad

DO I HAVE TO LIVE ON CAMPUS? Yes, traditional first-year students are required to live on campus. You also have the option of living in Granville Towers, an off-campus option. Granville Towers is a private entity, and contracts are issued independent of Carolina Housing, therefore, contracts are not transferable between the two.

ARE THERE “FIRST-YEAR” HALLS? Yes, the primary first-year halls include Ehringhaus, Koury, Horton, Craige, Craige North, Hinton James, Everett, Stacy, Graham, Aycock and Lewis. At times, due to larger enrollment numbers, first-year students may need to be housed in non-FYE resident halls.* But you will still be heavily involved in all FYE programming, so you won’t miss a thing! * Admissions enrollment can alter the FYE halls slightly. If a first-year student is enrolled in a Residential Learning Program, that student may live in the residence hall where the RLP is located.

HOW ARE ASSIGNMENTS MADE FOR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS? Applications received by May 15 are assigned a random lottery number. That lottery number determines the order by which the application is processed. To make a Housing assignment, the system identifies a student’s preferences and seeks vacant rooms starting with the first choice listed. If nothing is available in any of the locations a student prefers, a random Housing assignment is made. So, if you want to better your chances of getting your preferred assignment, just make sure you apply before May 15!

WHEN WILL I FIND OUT MY HOUSING ASSIGNMENT? Typically early June for those who meet the May 15 priority date. Confirmation is initially sent by email and is also online at myhousing.unc.edu.

WHEN CAN I MOVE IN? Incoming First-Year students for the 2019-20 academic year can move in either on Friday, August 16, or Saturday, August 17. The exact date and time is determined by where you’ll live. Look for the Carolina Housing Move-In Guide this summer for more details!

DO I HAVE TO LEAVE DURING BREAKS?

Residence halls only close for Winter Break and Summer Break. For Winter Break, Carolina Housing does offer temporary break housing in Craige Hall.

HOW MUCH WILL HOUSING COST?

The double occupancy room rate is $3,371 per student, per semester ($6,742 per student, per academic year). These rates include all utilities. See housing.unc.edu/rates for more information.

HOW WILL I BE BILLED FOR HOUSING?

Apply by May 15 and your student account will be billed in July with payments made to the University Cashier. Payments are not made directly to or at the Carolina Housing office.

CAN I REQUEST A ROOMMATE?

Sure! You can create a roommate group with as many as 8 students (including you) when you apply online for housing. Roommate changes are allowed on your application up until May 15.

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A ROOMMATE?

No problem– it’s actually quite common. We place you with another First-Year student. Checkout the Roommate Finding feature within myhousing.unc.edu.

WHAT IF MY ROOMMATE AND I DON’T GET ALONG? CAN I CHANGE ROOMS?

We understand that not every roommate match is perfect. So, if you choose, you can request a room change through the Carolina Housing office after the second week of fall semester and continuing throughout the academic year.

WHAT IF I AM INTERESTED IN LIVING WITH AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT?

On the My Profile page of the Housing application, you can indicate that preference.

PARTNERSHIPS

In Fall 2017, thanks to a collaboration between ITS ResNET, Carolina Housing, BeAM, and the Kenan-Flagler Business School, the new BLUE Makerspace was opened on the first floor of Carmichael Residence Hall. It is a 3,000-square-foot center that houses 24 3-D printers! The Makerspace provides other digital fabrication tools and a full kitchen for culinary creations!

This groundbreaking new space in Morrison Residence Hall was created in partnership with Carolina Housing, the Department of Art and Art History, and Arts Everywhere. The studio features free use of all the supplies you’ll need for painting and drawing, 24/7 access, and an Artist-in-Residence who serves as a resource to all visitors. Enjoy the freedom to learn, explore and create at your own pace!

MAKERSPACE MORRISON ART STUDIO

The Carolina Gaming Arena will open Fall 2019 in Craige Hall. This is the product of a massive cross-campus collaboration of more than a dozen organizations. The highly anticipated state-of-the-art esports arena is designed to appeal to all skill levels and features 26 entry-level and 12 high-end gaming PC stations. It also offers VR equipment, three game consoles, multiple TVs and digital signs, a reservation system and custom lighting and gaming chairs! So, you ready to game?!

Voice Into Action is an effort to communicate one clear message: We heard your voice and are making changes! Via is the result of Carolina Housing’s annual Skyfactor Residential Assessment survey -- an optional survey sent out to all on-campus residents. Our aim is to improve our practice, demonstrate student learning, share our story, facilitate and encourage data-driven decision making and planning, as well as to collect and analyze data in an ethical and inclusive way.

MORRISON ART STUDIO

Are you interested in living with others who have similar academic interests? Great! Carolina Housing has a new opportunity just for you! There are no mandatory classes connected to this Housing option. Simply put, students with similar academic interests have the chance to live together and build a strong community that focuses on mutual support. Housing By Academic Interest is not assigned to a specific building, rather, students are grouped together by their academic interests as indicated on their Housing Application and will therefore be housed throughout various first-year buildings. Here are the three categories available:

BUSINESS

Explore various business majors by creating a network of individuals who share your interest

in marketing, entrepreneurship, management, finance, or accounting. Students will learn about opportunities and programs offered by the Kenan-Flagler Business School and connect with Undergraduate Business Ambassadors.

THE ARTS Explore, create, and innovate in this community designed to support artistic endeavors. Get connected with peers who share similar artistic aspirations and interests.

HEALTH SCIENCES/PRE-MED

This community is ideal for students interested in networking around their interest in healthcare, including medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, and nursing.

HONORS CAROLINA Students accepted into the University’s premier academic program have the opportunity to live and learn together, as students who join this community are housed in either Horton Residence Hall or Hinton James Community and are paired with an Honors Carolina roommate! WHAT EXACTLY IS A RESIDENTIAL LEARNING PROGRAM (RLP)?

Carolina Housing’s Residential Learning Programs give students a unique, inclusive residential learning experience that connects classroom learning with residence life. Students enjoy all the usual advantages of living on campus in a residence hall, with the added benefit of living among a group that shares academic goals and interests.

WHAT’S INVOLVED IN AN RLP?

Members of an RLP meet on a regular basis to plan and participate in discussion groups and seminars. There are awesome social events that the group also plans and occasional interaction with the faculty.

WILL I MISS OUT ON THE FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE IF I JOIN AN RLP?

Not at all! First-year students involved in an RLP are welcome at all FYE events.

IS THERE A MAJOR TIME COMMITMENT THAT WOULD CUT INTO STUDY TIME?

An RLP is not meant to eat into study time, it is meant to supplement it. Students typically spend about 2-4 hours a week on RLP activities, depending on the project.

WHERE DO I L IVE IF I ’M IN AN RLP?

Participants in an RLP live together in one residence hall. If you’re a first-year student and you are accepted to an RLP that is not located in a first-year hall, you will live where the RLP is located.

HOW MANY RLPS ARE THERE?

For the 2019-20 academic year, Carolina Housing offers eight RLPs that first-year students can join. They include Balance House/Recovery House, Blue Community, First Gens, Global Scholars House, Outdoor Pursuits, Pride Place, Service & Leadership, and Transfer United.

Global Scholars feeds your desire to learn about other cultures through language and social events and seeks to provide leadership development and service opportunities.

SERVICE & LEADERSHIP Location: Hinton James

Service & Leadership stresses social consciousness and leadership skills and is ideal for students who have a passion for community outreach and public service.

Pride Place is committed to the personal wellness and academic success of students of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions. This is a community where every student can feel safe, included and empowered.

TRANSFER UNITED Location: Carmichael

Transfer United is a collaborative effort designed to promote a seamless transition as a transfer student to UNC. This program is open to any transfer student regardless of year. A first-year student with credits can apply for Transfer United.

FOOD TRUCK RODEOThe Food Truck Rodeo has quickly become a Carolina Halloween tradition where thousands of students flood Stadium Drive and get the chance to enjoy local food trucks. This program continues to grow and provide new experiences each year! We always look forward to this Carolina Housing tradition to be a part of Halloween in a fun, engaging, and safe environment!
