Rearing a calf is investing in your future. The rearing period

determines the vitality of the calf. Before puberty, the calf will

grow in size and in body capacity. Using a balanced diet will

stimulate the right development of the calf and provide vitality. This is

exactly what a modern farmer wants!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MILK PREPARATION

During the first 3 days provide the calf with colostrum from its own mother (if the quality

is good). After that, you can switch to milk replacer. It’s important for the calf to drink a

minimum of 2 litres of colostrum (40°C) as soon as possible after he is born. The inclusion

of antibodies from the colostrum mostly takes place during the first 12 hours of a calf’s life.

Give the calves 3 times a day 1.5 - 2 liter.

8 TIPS FOR BETTER SUCCESS1. The calf needs to drink colostrum for 3 days before

drinking Koudijs Koudalac. The colostrum contains

the necessary antibodies against viruses and are

essential to prevent diseases.

2. Liquids at temperature of at least at 42°C end up

in the rennet stomach where it is properly digested

due to the oesophageal groove reflex. Colder liquid

FROM CALF TO HEIFER WITH KOUDALAC

Check on the feeding table how much

milk to prepare.

Weigh the correct quantity of Koudalac

(150 gram per litre of water. Look on the

bag’s label for more details).

Warm up the water to 45-50°C, but

never over 70°C (use a thermometer).

Add, little by little, the powdered

Koudalac until the correct concentration

is attained.

Mix the milk thoroughly (stir at least

30 seconds).

Pour the milk in the bucket at least at

42°C, so the temperature of the milk

is correct.

end up in the rumen which is good for water but is

causing diarrhoea when milk ends up there.

3. Clean water must be available to the calves from

the second week. This is also the period to start

with Calf Meal. Everyday, provide fresh water and

feed (but never provide too much at once).

4. Be careful with the intake of concentrates before

the weaning period. Do not wean calves until their

intake of concentrates is at least 1.8/2.0 kg a day to

prevent a check at weaning.

5. Feed the youngest calves first. They are more sen-

sitive and it will reduce the risks of infection.

6. Always wear clean clothes and footwear avoid

spreading bacteria.

7. Feed the calves at the same time every day.

8. Before feeding, empty the bins and clean every-

thing. Provide high quality hay in racks.
