Kororo Public School
Address: 3 Korora School Road, Korora NSW 2450 Phone: 6653 6201 Fax: 6653 6776 Email [email protected]
Hello Everyone! Welcome back to Term 4! We are looking forward to a very busy end of year filled with lots of fun filled learning and activities. Our student attendance goal for 2020 is 90% or above for all students. The Importance of Attending School Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier, and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children. What if my child has to be away from school? On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include: * being sick, or having an infectious disease * having an unavoidable medical appointment * being required to attend a recognised religious holiday * exceptional or urgent family circumstance (e.g. attending a funeral)
Following an absence from school you must ensure that within 7 days you provide your child’s school with a verbal or written explanation for the absence. However, if the school has not received an explanation from you within 2 days, the school will contact you to discuss the absence. Principals may decline to accept an explanation that you have provided if they do not believe the absence is in the best interest of your child. In these circumstances, your child’s absence would be recorded as unjustified. When this happens, the Principal will discuss their decision with you and the reasons why. Principals may request medical certificates or other documentation when frequent or long term absences are explained as being due to illness. Principals may also seek parental permission to speak with medical specialists to obtain information to collaboratively develop a health care plan to support your child. If the request is denied, the Principal can record the absences as unjustified. Absences are recorded on Student Reports and students will be recognised for 100% attendance and will receive a Star Pupil Award.
Week 1 Term 4 - 14th October 2020
Travel Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during a school term is necessary, the Application for Extended Leave - Travel form will need to be completed. This form is available from the office. Absences relating to travel will be marked as leave on the roll and therefore contribute to your child’s total absences for the year. In some circumstances, students may be eligible to enrol in distance education for travel periods of over 50 school days. This should be discussed with your child’s Principal. The importance of arriving on time Arriving at school and class on time: • Ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the
day • Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine • Gives students time to greet their friends before class • Reduces class disruption for all students’ learning Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents. It is a legal requirement that you must accompany your child/ren to the office to explain their reason for being late. If you do not do this, your child will be marked as unjustified. During COVID-19 restrictions you can phone the office to explain and then send your chld to the office to collect a late-slip.
If a student misses as little as 8 days in a school term, by the end of primary school they’ll have missed over a year of school. What Might Happen if my child continues to have unacceptable absences? It is important to understand that the Department of Education may be required to take further action where children of compulsory school age have recurring numbers of unexplained or unjustified absences from school. Some of the following actions may be undertaken: Compulsory Schooling Conferences You may be asked, along with your child, to attend a Compulsory Schooling Conference. The conference will help to identify the supports your child may need to have in place so they attend school regularly. The school, parents and agencies will work together to develop an agreed plan (known as Undertakings) to support your child’s attendance at school. Working in Partnership The Department of Education recognises that working collaboratively with students and their families is the best way to support the regular attendance of students at school. We look forward to working in partnership with you to support your child to fulfil their life opportunities. Uniform Thank you everyone for ensuring students are wearing the correct uniform and are prepared to engage in a day of learning every day. We are very proud of our school uniform and it helps us all work together to achieve our goals. It gives a real sense of belonging and pride to be part of the school community where we value each other. Please avoid buying socks with large emblems and brightly coloured joggers. Our boy’s socks are grey and girl’s socks are white and our shoes are black with black laces. Remember to write your child’s name on their jumper/jackets and hats.

2021 Enrolment and Attendance
Please inform the office if your child/children will not be attending Kororo Public School in 2021. If you have not enrolled your child for Kindergarten please do as soon as possible. We are beginning to plan for 2021 and we need to know how many students we need to cater for. For example how many classrooms and teachers need to be provided to ensure a smooth and fun introduction to a new school year.
Have a wonderful week, Leonie Smith Principal
EXCITING CANTEEN NEWS!
From this term ordering lunch and recess will change. We will be using the QuickCliQ online method.
Please see instructions on how to register on the next page.
At the moment we are having a few difficulties setting this up and hope to have it up and running by next week. It would be great if you could still use the previous method of writing the lunch order on a paper bag. We will let you know via the Skoolbag app when it is up and running.
WE ARE SO PROUD!
It is wonderful to hear that there are 5 ex Kororo students who are now leaders in the SRC at Coffs Harbour
High School.
Addison Tyas - Captain at Kororo in 2015 and now Captain.
Zane Pike - Vice Captain at Kororo and now Vice Captain
Hunter Churchwell - Prefect Kororo and now Prefect.
Levi Bannerman - Sports Captain Kororo and now Prefect.
Adeline Tong - Student Prefect.
Although the brochure above says that you can order uniforms and more, you can only use the application
to order school lunches and recess.
Information about our Kindergarten Orientation sessions for 2021 has been sent home today via email and through the post today. These sessions will take place in Week 7 and Week 8 and will offer the chance for our newest students to meet other Kindergarten children, to familiarise themselves with our Kindergarten classrooms and to meet our experienced Kindergarten teachers. Students will be involved in a variety of fun activities during the sessions. If you know of anyone who has not enrolled their child at Kororo Public School for 2021 and they are turning five years of age before the 31st July 2021, please let them know to call our school office to pick up an enrolment package. They will also need to provide a copy of their child’s Birth Certificate, Immunisation Records and Proof of Residency, before the start of school in Term 1, 2021. The Uniform Shop will be open on the pick-up deck, next to the school office for the purchase of uniforms. Students do not need to wear school uniform to the Orientation program. At Kororo Public School, we are committed to providing a safe and caring learning environment for all children. We look forward to fostering a positive learning partnership.
BOOK WEEK PARADE 2020
Friday, 23rd October
As has been mentioned in newsletters in Term 3, we are holding our celebration of Book Week in Week 2.
We have now been able to finalise our plans for this event.
Students are asked to come to school dressed as a book character on Friday, 23rd October in Week 2.
We will be holding a parade for children after lunch, following the latest Covid-19 guidelines from the DoE. Unfortunately, we are not able to invite parents to attend due to Covid-19 restrictions. However, the parade will be videoed and uploaded to our school website for parents to view.
We are looking forward to seeing many smiling Kororo faces enjoying this activity on Friday of Week 2.
NB Please ensure children are addressed appropriately for sun safety ie shoulders must be covered (ie no tank tops or singlet tops), school hat for wearing outdoors, covered shoes.
