Kookaburra Chronicles
Indo Lingo
Where has the year gone!!??
Our final term in Indonesian has been very busy.
To wrap up our topic on shapes and colours, the Year 1’s and 2’s made kites: layang-layang. I think the
Year 2’s surprised themselves when we took the kites out for a test fly and they actually flew!! Many
happy and puffed out children from running around to get their kites off the ground! This was after
watching Ibu Ridout running around like a woman possessed in order to demonstrate!!
For those lucky enough to travel to Indonesia in the holidays, have a fantastic time. Get those kids
practising their Indonesian skills!
I wish the Year 6 children all the very best for high school. It’s fantastic to see so many continuing their
Indonesian language learning next year. Learning a second language, no matter what language, opens
many doors – the world is a very small place.
Selamat Hari Natal dan Tahun Baru!
Sampai tahun depan – Until next year!

Dear Parents and Caregivers
2018
In reviewing 2018 it is important to view the year within the holistic
context of being the first year of a 3 year Business Plan 2018-2020.
Embedded into the plan are a series of performance indicators which
included; Test data, Attendance data, Resources, Finances, Student
engagement, Community engagement and Staff and Parent/Carer
satisfaction rates. At the completion of the first year of the plan it is gratifying to be able to report to the school
community as a whole that every single performance indicator has been achieved at a level far above what the
system deems an acceptable level. The journey has been a challenging yet rewarding one. The last indicator, the
satisfaction rates among staff and parents/caregivers were at levels that were so high they are unprecedented. The
year has presented us with some unique challenges, not least being unprecedented enrolment increases across the
board. However, we’ve moved forward together and achieved really impressive results across the board. I thank and
commend all staff, parents/caregivers and above all our students on what has been a really productive and fulfilling
year at South Padbury and I hope you’re all as excited about 2019 as I am.

Holidays
My message to students: I know that you guys are going to love the break. I encourage you to go hard
and enjoy every moment, always being mindful of your own safety. Think before you act and have the
best holiday ever!
My message to parents/carers: I know that life’s busy and having the kids around 24/7 can be tiring. But
you must remember that this phase of your life is over in the blink of an eye and you must enjoy and
savour every moment. Children are not supposed to be perfect, tidy, quiet and unobtrusive – they’re kids!
Enjoy them for who they are and enjoy being their parent.

'South Padbury students have enjoyed clinics from both Rugby WA and WA Football Commission.
The students enjoyed the lessons from Doug Kidgell, Western Force and Jesse Tippett, West Perth Football Club.
Our South Padbury students learnt many new skills and responded enthusiastically to the boys from the two Football codes.
I take this opportunity to thank the South Padbury students for a very enjoyable year of PE and Sport in 2018. Onwards and upwards in 2019.

Last term, the Year 5 STEM clubbers caught word that the Pre-Primaries worm farm was UNDER AT-
TACK by a fruit fly invasion, so we decided to make them some fruit fly traps. We spent time with Miss
Bird researching different trap ideas before coming up with a design of our own. We then gathered all of
the equipment for our traps, made them and left them over the holidays to see which design could catch
the most flies…. After the holidays we checked the worm farm to find that our project was a complete
SUCCESS and there were no more fruit flies!
If you are having trouble with fruit flies, we have some very simple steps for you to follow:
Fill a plastic cup or a small water bottle to about half way with apple cider vinegar.
Splash a drop of dishwashing liquid in it.
Add some fruit scraps or even a teaspoon of vegemite to make it extra smelly.
Leave the trap uncovered (this is the trick) in the problem area and let it do its magic!
Well done to Jacob Health in TA11 for his winning design. Mia Judd TA5
