contribute to their meaning To evaluate conflicting viewpoints within and about particular literary texts To analyze the style, register and structure of a text To use elements from a novel to produce new media

The Product: Please choose one of these possible ideas for a project which will be completed on May 29, 2015. All essays, when applicable, will be between 6001,000 words in length.

Creating a movie production of your novel. This would include a movie trailer and an essay in which you choose which actors/actresses would play the roles of the characters in your novel. There should be an essay with an explanation for why you would cast a particular actor/actress based on evidence found in the book. This option can be collaborative with one other student.

Creating a movie production of your novel #2. Choose ten songs to set a movie score to particular scenes in the novel. Please make sure to explain in an essay how each of the songs fit that particular scene.

Creating a graphic novel adaptation of your independent reading. Suppose the major characters from the novel you read are guests on a TV talk show like Ricki Lake, Oprah, or Montel Williams, only you are the host. Develop a "hot" topic which these characters can all relate to (ex: for The Princess Bride you could use, "My husband tried to kill me"). You may want to even include the author as one of your guests or perhaps a counselor who can give advice to each character. Gather your friends to take on these roles and tape the show "live" on video. Remember to advise your friends to stay in role. Be sure to have a theme song to go with your show and mention the topic for your program. You will also need to introduce each character and ask probing questions that reveal who he/she is, how he/she is related to the other character(s), his/her beliefs, motivations (reasons for doing certain actions), and anything else of importance to your topic. Be sure to take questions from your audience or callers. Include at least one commercial break in your show (all commercial(s) must somehow relate to the novel you read). You are required to write a script and make sure each person who is in your video has a copy to study. Turn the script in with the videotape. 57 minutes in length. This project can be a collaboration of up to four students.

Question Answer What is your name?

Grant Konkle

What is the title of the text/author you are using as the basis of your project?

Christine by Stephen King

Write the type of project you are doing and the names of your collaborators if you are doing this in a group.

Making a movie trailer with Donavin and Chance

Please write your your proposal here. Make sure it includes, why you feel this product and novel will be successful for you.

Christine, by Stephen King, is the book that Grant Konkle, Chance Brock, and I decided to produce a movie trailer based on. It will loosely follow the plot of the book, highlighting the most interesting parts, while keeping the plot somewhat hidden. We plan to use my cars for most of the trailer, with acting included also. This book has perfect scenes for a trailer, given it is very brutal in nature, with the majority of it being interesting. Being that this is about a car, and I have access to cars that fit the theme of the book well. My Electra will fit the role of Christine well, appearing beat up, out of style, my Corvair will be taking the role of Buddy Repperton’s Camaro. The theme of this movie lends itself to the weather here as well, generally gloomy/ dark, as most of the book is. The most vital part of this project is my knowledge of the book, as well as the cars featured. I know the plot very well, know the cars very well, know the characters well. We will be able to create a unique trailer in which it is different from others. We ourselves will be doing the acting ourselves in which will make it unique from others projects.

Christine Movie Trailer

Creating a movie production of your novel.

Donavin, Chance, and I created a movie trailer based off the book Christine by

Stephen King. All of the scenes shot where original via the book except one which I will

explain later. Due to a lack of a large budget we weren’t able to truly to recreate the

scenes, but we did however capture many of the key elements. The book Christine is a

thriller that has an edge to it. This was something that we creating with our film clips.

To begin the car Christine was a 1958 Plymouth, which we did not have the time

or the resources to buy. Therefore Donavin’s 1972 Buick Electra was the car of choice to

play Christine. This was mainly because as you can see in the video that the car is in

rough shape. This actually is a good this because in Christine is not in any sort of good

shape we can assume this because Dennis Guilder says to Arnie, “Arnie, I think the

engine block's cracked. I really do. This car is lunch, my friend. It's just total lunch. If

you want wheels, we can find you something a lot better than this for twofifty. I mean it.

A lot better.' 'It's twenty years old,' he said. 'Do you realize a car is officially an antique

when it's twenty years old?' 'Yeah,' I said. 'The junkyard behind Darnell's is full of

Page 8: Konkle-IndependentReadingSummativeAssignment

Konkle 8

official antiques, you know what I mean?” Based on this you can get the picture that Ch

ristine is not in good shape at all which is why the Electra works perfectly.

The next scene is Chance Brock as Roland Lebay selling the car to Donivan

Anderson as Arnie Cunningham. There was a scene that was filmed about Arnie finding

the car and saying how much he liked the car. Then the guest star Logan Haas as Dennis

Guilder explains to Arnie that the car is junk as I said in the earlier in the paragraph. The

reason this scene was cut from the final product was because the sound quality was

lacking once it was transferred to the computer. However after Arnie admires the car he

is dead set on buying it, and so therefore he does.

So far we have been able to recreate the major books scenes, but next is where it

cannot be fully followed. Due to the amount of time it would take and the cost we could

not restore Christine. In the book Christine is restored by Arnie, but not with much

regard. The car actually is fixing itself without Arnie fully realizing. We however

couldn’t simply “fix” the car as to follow the book. How we created a distinction of the

fixed cars was the fact that the car sounded like a running car and was able to drive. In

the second scene the car sounds terrible, but later the car is seen moving is fully

functioning.

Again we also had to be conscious of the car when we “destroyed” it because we didn’t

have the money to fix it. Me playing Buddy Repporton used a twobyfour to represent

the sledgehammer used by Buddy to destroy the car. The next scene of the trailer being

Buddy driving his camaro which is replaced by a black Pontiac Grand Am. The chase

was only filmed one time because the Grand Am went into a ditch which caused the

fender and door damage. However the first scene happened to look good except for the

Page 9: Konkle-IndependentReadingSummativeAssignment

Konkle 9

little giggle at the end. To end this Buddy Repporton is chased down on foot after it

makes the car crash and Buddy is terminated.

In conclusion this production and making of this trailer was harder than expected.

The fact that we had to film multiple times to ensure we had to right picture was much of

the struggle. We did pull it together for a rather unique and interesting project in which

we followed the book as closely as we possibly could considering our budget.
