Namaskaru! First of all, on behalf of the 2013 KAOCA committee, we would like to wish all KAOCA members a very happy spring and a lovely year.

We are looking forward to organize fun-filled events throughout the year that shall engage the Konkani community of Bay Area. The 2013 theme will be Family-Friendship-Fun:

• Family: We want to get all families actively involved in the community, through entertainment and other events.

• Friendship: We want to bring people together within the community and create new friendships, while we promote Konkani culture and language.

• Fun: We want to make our events enjoyable, and give much opportunity to have fun. • (Of course, we are not leaving the authentic Konkani Food behind).

We are working hard to make this an exciting year. We intend to solicit your full support to make this year full of fun events. Apart from our traditional events, which are Yugadi, Picnic, Sports Day, and Diwali, we are also considering Karaoke, Dandiya, youth interaction and charity programs. Please send us your ideas by email to [email protected].

We know that there are a number of Konkani’s in the Bay area, both long term residences and newcomers, who are not connected to KAOCA. Please spread the word about KAOCA to your friends and urge them to join and participate.

KAOCA has flourished due to the continued and extensive support from the community. KAOCA really depends on the active participation from all its members, timely payment of annual membership fees and generous contributions from donors. Hence we urge everyone in the community to lend their support in every possible way. The annual membership fees and donations from its patrons are used to offset facility (which are immensely expensive in the Bay area) and other costs. Members in turn enjoy discounted fees for all KAOCA events.

Our best wishes to everyone in the KAOCA community!

Nothing but… The grass outside swayed lazily in the meadows, The morning dew drops settled on the windows, Today even the air was acting naughty, From the hills ,the sun rose slow and steady. As its rays kissed her forehead lovingly, She opened her eyes dreamily, the moist air played with her hairs- They sashayed without cares! And I kept on looking at her, Adoration Surging through me, our eyes met and the world was a blur! Such an Angel, who else could it, be? She came closer to me and bent low, she touched me with her soft hands, my body shivered; my face aglow, Restless is my mind and still does the time stand! Continued next page..

This year, KAOCA has had several entertaining and unforgettable experiences that have brought our Bay area Konkani community together in different ways. In the beginning half of this year, we have had 5 programs. Here are our events and an account of what we did this year in 2013 so far:

Karaoke Evening with Voluntary Food Drive Our first event this year was the Karaoke Evening with Voluntary Food Drive, held on Sunday, March 10th, 2013, at the Centerville Community Center, Fremont, CA where many community members came together to sing and enjoy music. We had several performances, old and new songs, English and Hindi, and amateur and expert: 25 songs were sung by 26 members and we were amazed by the singing talents in the KAOCA community. We added a twist by having food drive boxes for the Second Harvest Food Bank, getting a lot of food and cash to donate to the service. As an opening event, we really enjoyed our time and got to know some of our new community members. Youth Interaction Day We started a new program this year—Youth Interaction Day. Our first meeting was on Sunday, April 14th and we got teenagers and some younger kids to prepare brunch. Pancakes, hash browns, scrambled eggs, lemonade, and fruits were prepared by the kids with little parental guidance. Though many parents were nervous about letting the kids handle the cooking, the end results were great. After this, the kids went outside to play a game of Ultimate Frisbee “street-style”. At the end, the children discussed their goals for the future and decided to meet again. KAOCA Yugadi Event We had our annual Yugadi Program, on April 27th at Woodside High School Performing Arts Center, Woodside, CA. The response was overwhelming with more than 425 members attending this event. This year, our entertainment theme was “Sammilan: Unity in Diversity”. We started the entertainment program with a Classical Dance medley of Bharatnatyam and Kathak. Then, we had a series of dances scattered throughout representing different parts of India. The boys performed a Maharastrian fisherman dance and a Bhangra dance. On the other hand, the girls danced a Goan dance to the song “YayaMayaya”, a Bengali dance, and a Kannada Kolata dance. Our women also performed, with the Kerala Onam dance, and a

She clutched me near her heart, skin soft as fur! All I could listen was her raised beat. Synchronized are my breaths with her; In my own awakened dream, no ground beneath my feet! Sipping wine through the glass shining bright, Love was in the air in this moon lit night, sealed with a kiss, lost in her scent, Unclasped from rapturous kiss, I repent- There I lay beside a knife- Ah! But I still love my life! Music and Dance, here it goes, Who do you think I am? Just one Lucky ROSE! Such delicate touch such delirious joy! "What a sculpt beauty god maketh thee!" Rajasthani dance. Throughout the program we had an announcing skit performed by Prasad Pai (as Mallya mam, retired bank manager from India) and Muralidhar Kamath (as Kamath mam, retired Bay area executive). They wove the “Sammilan” performances together with wisecracks and hillareous acting. There were also two movie song dances: “Masha Allah” and “Disco Dewaane”. We had several other exciting performances such as a teen band with Omkar Shanbhag, Medha Acharya, Nikhil Prabhu, Anirudh Pai, Mihika Gokarn, and Nihal Prabhu, performing several top hit English songs. Several singers performed songs both old and new, while KAOCA dancers dancing to some of these tunes. Singing bhajans with piano and tabla background, KAOCA children enlivened our ears. KAOCA men had a “Nagarbhajan” session, with them coming from the audience onto the stage. The highlight of the night was at the end, when we had a Fancy Dress Exhibition by the little ones. At this time, to the song ‘VandeMataram’, we had a flash mob where all the performers came from the audience onto the stage dancing. Overall, we had an amazing 90 performers in the Ugadi event, the most performers we’ve had yet on a single stage event at KAOCA! As usual, we had our tannik at the start of the event, and had Konkani delicacies such as karathe nonche, kultha koddel, and ambe upkari at dinner. All these traditional Konkani items were cooked by our food committee members and volunteers (Thanks Volunteers!). During the dinner, we introduced our new KAOCA members to all by letting them give an introductory speech to the community. We also held a raffle completion and the winners of the gift certificates and a grand prize of “Google Nexus” were announced after dinner.

Contributions to our next Panchadik Newsletter

We encourage everyone in the community to actively contribute and share poems, articles, and news. You can also share birth announcements, graduation news, college acceptances, humor, recipes, health tips and anything else (no personal gossip) that would be an interesting read for the KAOCA community. Please mail your contributions to [email protected].

To finish off the event, we had a massive DJ dancing session where we all got up and showed off our moves to celebrate our time together that night. Community Volunteering at City Team Ministries As part of KAOCA, we do Community Volunteer Service at various locations. On May 18th, Teens and adults alike went to the City Team Ministries’ Men’s Recovery Kitchen to prepare food to be served to the less fortunate. We chopped fruit, made tortillas, and diced other ingredients to help make meals for 500 people and then dinner as well.

Sports Day, Karaoke and Food Extravaganza Our next KAOCA event was Annual Sports Day, on June 1st. We had a dual event: table tennis and badminton at the California Badminton Academy, Fremont, CA and other indoor sports at the Warm Springs Community Center. We had traditional games such as carrom, cards, and chess, and also modern games like Musical Chairs, and Wii Sports. The atmosphere was competitive, yet social, and all participants enjoyed the tournaments we set up. KAOCA chefs had a cooking competition by preparing 17 dishes for the dinner, and the winners, Chicken Sukka and Khichidi, were voted as winners by the community. We had Karaoke and Bingo at the end of the day, and throughout, the kids were playing in the park and the lawns, thoroughly enjoying their time together. So far, KAOCA has had a memorable half year. We have welcomed many new families and brought together family and friends to have a lot of fun, fulfilling our theme of “Family-Friendship-Fun”. Looking forward to the next half of the year, we prepare for our annual Picnic, Diwali program, and more to come. --Contributed by Ram and Aruna Acharya, Presidents (KAOCA), Fremont, CA

The Global Religiousness

Medha Acharya

Religion is a very important part of how the world works. It holds the key to keeping people together, pushing them apart, starting conflicts, and even pulling science and spirituality together. Even if we do not have religious beliefs ourselves, religion is a system of thought that keeps us firmly rooted and not flying away without a mindset. Religion can be as simple as believing in a higher power that influences everything, or it can involve a complicated web of gods and rituals. How does religion influence the modern outlook and the people around us? So many people have pondered this question which I would like to bring it up: What exactly is religion? According to the Encarta English Dictionary, religion is defined as: people's beliefs and opinions concerning the existence, nature, and worship of a deity or deities, and divine involvement in the universe and human life. However, a wise person (a young one at that, too) once told me that religion is just a belief in something. Many people are atheists, while others are very religious. What is the difference between them? One side says God exists, the other says It doesn’t [I use “It” because you cannot give God a gender]. Does God really exist? The very question is a dangerous thing to say. When asked this question, that very wise person I told you about said: “I cannot say for sure whether God exists or not, but I know for sure that you have to believe in something to keep you firmly in place. God may or may not exist, but his belief is almost material in the sense that just believing in yourself and life is a form of religion. Even

atheists have a religion. They believe in life. They believe in themselves. Without believing in something, man is not man anymore; he is simply just an animal who does not believe in anything else.” However, in our world, nobody views religion as one system of believing in something. Instead, we regard it as a thing that is so important, you must die for it. In the past, religion has been responsible for many events. The Crusades, the jihads, the Holocaust, and other persecutions have all been influenced by religious clashes in beliefs. Religious clashes occur when different people believe in things that others don’t, leading to schools of thought involving “my beliefs are better/yours are inferior” or “you don’t believe in what I do, so I should kill you or force you to convert” kinds of ideas. How has these conflicts influenced our world today? Well, conflicts between groups in the past have led to both mistrust and uncooperativeness against the other, or even worse, more conflict against the other. In the Crusades, the Christians fought to take control of the Holy Land, Jerusalem and the surrounding. Today, conflicts still rage in Palestine and Israel, and Muslims and Christians share the enmity against each other that their ancestors also had. When religions clash, their roots spread downwards into the future, creating more and more problems because of differences in beliefs. What makes this idea so important that it separates us from the rest of this Earth? One thing people don’t understand is that humans are the ruling force because of one

PANCHADIK

thing. No, it is not because we have the largest brain capacity, nor because we have the largest brain cortex. It is religion. We, alone, among all other organisms have the ability to believe in something other than survival skills. We have domesticated ourselves to the point where we can use our imagination, view of the world, and natural happenings to create our own ideas about how the world works, which is something animals and other organisms have not yet established. We have established the fact that we can think for ourselves by believing in whatever we believe. It is so simple and yet so amazing that we, whether or not we are religious, believe our own version of the world’s mysteries, finding new things each day to support the fact that we are in a religion of our own. This idea that religion is the key to world dominance is very old, yet so new, because we have used religion to bring up new empires, new religions, new conflicts, new people, and more. Our modern outlook of the world is based on this religiousness, because it has called us to dominance and to how we think of the world on a large scale. But when I look out at the worlds, I see a body of bruises and cuts inflicted by the growing clashes of different religions. The pain taken for a simple system of belief has changed our world in so many ways that it is hard to believe what kind

of a toll our Earth is taking. Is religion such a big idea that you will put your life on stake for it, or is it a simple idea taken too seriously? If anyone could answer that, we would be in a smaller mess than right now, though the very answer may conflict with a lot of beliefs. Is the world just a big jumble of beliefs or are we just another planet in space?

Bharatanatyam Arangetram of Priya Kini: As the crowd cheered, the dancer onstage bowed, did her "namaskaaram", and walked off stage. She had just completed her 3 hour long Bharatanat- yam arangetram and had done a spectacular job. Priya Kini, daughter of Nagaraja and Geetha Kini, had her arangetram on July 20th at the McAfee Theater in Saratoga. At 13, Priya is a normal just-turned teenager, but has been learning Bharatanatyam for 5 years now, and you can see the onstage persona that differs from her usual laid-back style. In her arangetram, she started out with a pushpanjali, in which she offered prayers to God and took the blessings of her guru Vishal Ramani and the musicians. Then she had a piece praising Ganesha, the remover of all obstacles. After this, she brought out intense rhythms and vivid clarity in her Jathiswaram, which was all about nritta, or pure dance. After this came the most challenging piece of the repertoire: the varnam. Her varnam was one of the great compositions about Lord Vishnu in many of his forms. Guru Vishal Ramani used some great choreography in this dance which featured some of the great scenes of the Mahabharata, including the game of dice and disrobing of Draupadi, and Krishna's telling of the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. Priya's expressions are one of her best attributes, as she vividly shows all emotions required in her dance.

There was a short intermission after this piece, but when the second part started, the level ofdance did not diminish. Priya brought out three padams, or expressional pieces. She

started with "Chandra Chooda", a piece on Shiva, and brought out his beauty in his Thandava dance. Next, she performed the famous "AigiriNandini" stotram about Devi and her forms. Her next piece was called "Nee Mattale" and it was a light-hearted "javali" portraying a young women asking her lord (Krishna) why he was teasing her constantly. This was a very well acted out dance, with lots of expression. Priya closed out her performance with her thillana, which was pure dance with a short part praising Ganesha at the end. Priya's performance was a great portrayal of Konkani talent and we wish her much success in the future. - Contributed by Medha Acharya

Experience: KAOCA Youth Get Together

We had the pleasure of hosting the 1st KAOCA Youth get together at our home on April 14 this year. It was attended by about 15 youth from varying ages 11-16. The objective was to build some lasting relationships among our Konkani youth so that they would still feel connected to the community even as they got older into the dreadful teenage years. So, we decided to keep it simple. We made a pancake breakfast and played Ultimate Frisbee, my two favorite activities. The day started by separating the kids into a few groups; some picked lemons for fresh lemonade, some prepared pancake batter, some made scrambled eggs, and some handled hash browns. The kids really got into it and we tried to just let them be on their own even though it was difficult for some of the moms to let handle things on their own. In between cooking the batches of pancakes and other items, we had time for some Ultimate Frisbee, street style. While some cars got hit by a few Frisbee crashes, it was a successful outing. The kids really picked up the game fast and most remembered playing it at school. At the end of the event, all the kids intro- duced themselves, told us a little bit about them, and what they wanted to be when they grew up. One great response was “I want to be CEO of Apple”. Let’s see if he changes his mind after a few years. For any ideas for Youth Interaction in future, Please send your ideas to [email protected]. Contributed by - Bharat Shenoy

March 8, 2013

During the year of 2012, the Konkani Charitable Fund made big strides in donations received and contributions made. More than 50 donations were received during the year amounting to more than $200,000. Twenty donations amounting to $140,000 has been already made during the same period. Many donations received towards the end of 2012 will be distributed in early part of 2013. The most notable aspect of the KCF is that we have been to achieve this success with zero administrative cost to the donors. The directors made the commitment to send 100% of the donations to the designated charitable cause. 100% of the administrative cost is offset by the funds donated by the directors for that specific purpose. We look forward to continued growth in 2013.

Top 10 reasons to contribute to Konkani Charitable Fund. 10. KCF is dedicated to do humanitarian work to benefit needy

Konkani communities in India. 9. KCF makes sure that the organizations receiving funds meet all

legal requirements of charitable organizations. 8. KCF gives scholarships to needy students to pursue higher
