Pistons

Specially shaped piston pin bores (Hi-SpeKS®) raise the dynamic load capacity of the piston pin bed, thereby increasing the piston’s durability.

KOLBENSCHMIDT pistons feature special LofriKS®, NanofriKS® or graphite coatings on the piston skirt. These reduce friction inside the engine and ensure good emer-gency running properties. LofriKS® coatings are also employed for acoustic reasons. Their use minimises piston slap noises. NanofriKS® is a further development of the tried and tested LofriKS® coating, and additionally contains nanoparticles of titanium oxide, to increase the coating’s wear resistance and durability.

Iron-coated piston skirts (Ferrocoat®) guarantee reliable operation when used in aluminium silicon cylinder surfaces (Alusil®).

Cast-in ring carriers of cast iron increase the durability of the first ring groove of diesel pistons many times over. Kolbenschmidt is a leader in the development of Alfin ring-carrier bonding.

Hard-anodised ring grooves prevent wear and micro welding in pistons for petrol engines.

Laser-hardened grooves ensure optimum wear resistance and maximum durability for steel pistons.

• Piston rings are a vital element for sealing against combustion gases, and form a dynamic sealing system in combi n ation with the piston and cylinder bore.

In three-material bearings, the bearing metal (bronze alloy) is cast or sintered onto the steel back.

Bearing bushes for conrods are semi-finished; in other words, they have to be machined to the required nominal dimension after being pressed into the conrods.

Engine bearing halves are used both as conrod and main bearings. They consist of thin-walled composite bearing halves.

Dual-material bearings have a steel back plated with the bearing metal, which is mostly aluminium with added tin and copper.

Engine bearing halves without locating lugs facilitate mechanical assembly of engines at the manufacturer’s. The locating lugs are not needed in order for the bearing to function correctly.

Engine bearings with a sputtered sliding layer are used in all modern diesel engines in which conventional dual or three-material bearings reach the limits of their stress-bearing capabilities due to the high engine power.

• Valves are highly stressed wearing parts that are continually exposed to hot combustion gases. For this reason, replacement valves are frequently required for cylinder head repairs.

Sodium-filled hollow valves improve the transport of heat in highly stressed engines. The sodium liquefies at operating temperature, and conveys heat from the valve head into the valve stem, where it can exit via the valve guide.

The two materials of bimetallic valves combine the extremely high thermal resistance of the valve head with the wear resistance of the valve stem.

Chromium-plated valve stem surfaces increase wear resistance.

Armoured and therefore stronger valve seat surfaces ensure long durability of valves, even under extreme conditions.

Armoured stem end faces offer maximum wear resistance. This is particularly important when the valve opening force is not introduced centrally into the valve stem for design reasons.

Water pumps

• Other designations frequently used for water pumps are: Coolant pumps, cooling liquid pumps.

• The water pump circulates the cooling liquid in the sealed cooling liquid system.

• Water pumps are typical wear parts, which must sometimes be replaced several times during the service life of the engine.

• When reconditioning the engine, the water pump should always be replaced to ensure operational safety.

• Water pumps are attached to the outside of the engine block and can be replaced without dismantling the engine itself.

• Water pumps are driven by V-belts, poly-rib belts or toothed belts, depending on the installation location in the engine.

toothed belts for the camshaft.• Due to the installation location and the

type of drive, the expenditure for replacing the pump is greater than for pumps with a V-belt drive.

• Toothed belt driven pumps are always flange-mounted onto the engine block and do not have mating housing.

• Recommendation: The labour required for servicing means that when replacing the toothed belt, the water pump should also be replaced at the same time.

Oil pumps

• Oil pumps are required for supplying oil to all lubricated engine components.

• Due to their purpose and the way they function, oil pumps are installed inside the engine.

• When the oil pump is replaced, the engine must either be opened or dismantled, depending on the pump design.

• Oil pumps are generally completely replaced. They are not intended to be overhauled.

• Oil pumps have a long service life, but this may be reduced by maintenance errors such as poor oil quality, oil dilution, dirt or engine damage. This may make premature replacement of the oil pump necessary.

• In modern passenger cars, regulated oil pumps are used that deliver the oil flow in a demand-based manner, thereby saving fuel.

Gear-wheel pumps• are mostly in the form of push-on

pumps, or pumps with gear or chain drive. These pumps are driven indirectly by the crankshaft.

• In addition to a high delivery rate, they can also generate high pressure.

Air filters • The optimised particulate separation

efficiency of the air filter minimises the wear on pistons, piston rings and the running surface of cylinder liners. The air filters, adapted to the engine character-istics and installation space, effectively suppress disruptive intake noises.

Fuel filters • Even minor impurities in the fuel system

can lead to severe malfunctions. Modern injection systems, in particular, require an extremely clean, pulsation-free and homogenous fuel supply.

Oil filters • Oil filters filter and retain metal swarf

from inside the engine or foreign bodies which get into the engine via the fuel or intake air.

Transmission oil filters for automatic transmission units• The transmission oil filter is responsible

for preventing foreign bodies from entering the automatic transmission unit. The optimum filtration of wear-inducing sub-stances, such as metal swarf caused by abrasion, maintains good transmission performance and prolongs service life.

Cabin filters • Cabin filters prevent foreign particles

such as dust, pollen, spores and soot in the ambient air from entering the car interior through the ventilation system.

• Cabin filters with activated carbon are not only fine filters for solid particulates, they also absorb unpleasant odours and harmful gases such as nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, ozone and hydrocar-bons, and prevent them from entering the vehicle interior at a rate of 95 %.

Oil centrifuge filters• These filters are used as bypass filters in

combination with full flow filters. The finest particulates, which may have passed through the full flow filter, are filtered out by bypass filters. With this combination, highly effective filtration is achieved.

Urea filters • filter the urea solution in modern

exhaust treatment systems with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) converters, protecting the thereby protect the system components from wear.

Coolant filters• Coolant filters protect the engine cooling

system by filtering out impurities and releasing the additives contained in the filter into the cooling system at a controlled rate.

• Please note that cylinder heads which may be included in the delivery are not fully assembled. These must be aligned with the exhaust manifold or intake manifold and the cylinder head bolts must be tightened according to the

• Clean oil cooler thoroughly and check for blockages, it is imperative to replace this in the case of previous engine damage.
