Becoming Avraham

'And God said to Avram, go out ('lech-lecha') for yourself from your land, from your birthplace, from the house of your father, to the land which I will show you' (Bereishit 12,1)

This verse contains God’s famous command of ‘lech lecha’ to Avraham (then still called Avram – see Bereishit 17:5) when God told Avraham to move to an unspecified new place to start a new life, part of which included a new name.

Rashi explains that the move was for Avraham’s own good and benefit. Only by moving away from the milieu in which he had grown up could he establish himself in his own right, to develop into the great figure that he was later to become. Understandably, this command of ‘lech lecha’ is thus considered to be one of the ten tests undergone by Avraham to show the extent of his faith in and connection with God (based on Pirkei Avot 5:4 which is on page 554 in the green siddur).

Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, one of the great Rabbinic scholars of the 20th century, queried Rashi’s explanation that Avraham was being tested. Often people have to travel in order to advance or to improve their livelihood. They might do so even when there are no guarantees of success.

Rabbi Feinstein noted that Avraham’s move was a real test of faith, to see whether Avraham would doubt God’s word especially since he had no idea about the outcome of his travels. Avraham did not move due to personal motivations, either to leave his milieu or to go to a particular place.

Avraham’s trust in God was such that he obeyed the command without even knowing where he was going or what was liable to transpire, at least in the short term. This trust is perhaps analogous to the Jewish people’s later acceptance of Torah at Mount Sinai, when we proclaimed, ‘we will do and we will listen’ (Shemot 24,7), accepting God’s commandments before hearing the details.

Avraham's appreciation of God and of his relationship with God was such that he just did what God said. Avraham’s attitude and physical move enabled him to achieve such a lofty spiritual level. Therefore, given Avraham’s character, the move had to be beneficial for him, wherever God would have taken him.

Avraham’s appreciation of God is a significant theme of his life and one for us to emulate. Such emulation may not always be easy, but it is an aspiration for us as Jews to learn this from Avraham.

This week, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of President Chaim Herzog z’l and welcome his family members and other special guests. In the footsteps of Avraham and so many other Jews, President Herzog also made aliya having ‘heard’ the calls of Divine Providence, Jewish tradition and the modern movement of Zionism. The Herzog family’s accomplishments in Israel, with God’s help, continue to inspire the Jewish people.

The Blessing of Nation and Mission A warm welcome to our guests, HE Mark Regev, Isaac Herzog, Michael Herzog, Stephen Jaffe from Northern Ireland Friends of Israel, Izchak Sonnenschein with representatives of the Jewish Agency, the World Zionist Organisation and the Zionist Federation; to Chazan Shai Abramson and the Neimah Singers.

“I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and those who curse you will I curse; and all the families of the earth shall bless themselves by you.” (Bereshit 12:1-3)

Parashat Lech Lecha tells of the promise of a land, the journey to the land, religious inspiration, of leadership, soldiering, moral accountability, conflicts of nations and the hope of a homeland for generations. There could be no more fitting Parasha to honour the centenary of the birth of Israel’s 6th President, Chaim Herzog. Of course, Abraham’s father Terach was renowned as a manufacturer of idols, whereas Chaim Herzog’s father, Chief Rabbi Isaac HaLevi Herzog was an illustrious Torah giant.

Born in Ireland in 1918, and making Aliya in 1935, Chaim Herzog was a distinguished lawyer and soldier, fighting in the Hagana during the Arab Revolt and with British intelligence in WW2; participating in the liberation of Bergen Belsen and the identification of Heinrich Himmler. As well as his career in law, his public service included service as Defence Attaché at the Israeli Embassy in America, Military Governor of East Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria after the Six Day War and Ambassador to the United Nations 1975-1978. It was there that he delivered his impassioned attack on the infamous “Zionism is Racism” Resolution 3379.

“…We, in Israel, have endeavoured to create a society which strives to implement the highest ideals of society - political, social and cultural - for all the inhabitants of Israel, irrespective of religious belief, race or sex.

Show me another pluralistic society in this world in which, despite all the difficult problems among which we live, Jew and Arab live together with such a degree of harmony, in which the dignity and rights of man are observed before the law, in which no death sentence is applied, in which freedom of speech, of movement, of thought, of expression are guaranteed, in which even movements, which are opposed to our national aims, are represented in our Parliament…

… It is our attempt to build a society, imperfect though it may be - and what society is perfect? - in which the visions of the prophets of Israel will be realized. I know that we have problems. I know that many disagree with our Government's policies. Many in Israel, too, disagree from time to time with the Government's policies, and are free to do so, because

Zionism has created the first and only real democratic State in a part of the world that never really knew democracy and freedom of speech…

… Over the centuries it has fallen to the lot of my people to be the testing agent of human decency, the touchstone of civilization, the crucible in which enduring human values are to be tested. A nation's level of humanity could invariably be judged by its behaviour towards its Jewish population. It always began with the Jews but never ended with them…

… For us, the Jewish people, this is but a passing episode in a rich and an event-filled history. We put our trust in our Providence, in our faith and beliefs, in our time-hallowed tradition, in our striving for social advance and human values, and in our people wherever they may be.”

Words of hope, mission and admonition which resonate today.

Herzog entered the Knesset in 1981 and was elected President in May 1983, holding the position till May 1993, seeing six governments and four Prime Ministers: Begin, Shamir, Peres and Rabin.

He married Aura in 1947. She was an Egyptian born mathematician and physicist, who also served with the Hagana and was part of the Jewish Agency’s first Diplomatic course. Amongst many accomplishments, Aura was a founder of the international Bible Quiz (Chidon HaTanach), of the Council for a Beautiful Israel and published “Secrets of Hospitality” was to teach Israelis hospitality, manners and customs.

Their four children are Yoel, Michael, Isaac “Bougie” and Ronit.

Isaac Herzog has recently become Chair of the Jewish Agency, after a series of Ministerial positions 2005-2011 and Leader of the Opposition 2013-2018.

Brigadier-General Michael Herzog served as head of the Strategic Planning Division of the IDF and worked with four defence ministers as senior military aide and advisor, and as chief of staff. He has played a role in Israel’s negotiations in the peace process since 1993.

It is also a great pleasure to welcome HE Mark Regev, an outstanding ambassador and advocate for Israel.

Shabbat Shalom,

R’ Jeremy Lawrence

THIS WEEK’S HAFTORAH BY RABBI ANDREWS The connection between this week’s Haftorah, Yishayahu (Isaiah) 40:27-41:16, and the Parsha (Torah portion) most ostensibly is the reference in the passuk (verse) 41:8 to the Jewish people as “the descendants of Abraham who loved Me”.

In this week’s reading, the Navi (prophet) offers the B’nei Yisroel a comforting message. The recipients of this prophecy are the B’nei Yisroel who have been exiled. Yishayahu tells them that Hashem has not rejected them, and is still concerned about their well-being.

Although the overall message of Yishayahu’s prophesy is of Hashem’s aid and attentiveness, his tone is not always reassuring. He criticises the Jews “Why do you say, O Jacob, Why declare, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the LORD, My cause is ignored by my God? Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is God from of old”.

Yishayahu reminds the people that God is still involved in their lives and remains all-powerful. In contrast, however, the Jews have lost faith in Him and have turned to avodah zarah (idol worship). The prophet compares the idols, which have no strength of their own to stand, with our mighty and robust God.

Hashem reminds Israel that He wants His people to stay away from idolaters and those who don’t recognise Him. Israel is referred to as “My servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, seed of Abraham”, implying a special future role of the nation.

In the parsha, Abraham is promised that his descendants will be a great nation, more numerous than all of the dust on earth. To realise this destiny, Abraham has to withstand many challenges and temptations. So too, the people of Israel are reminded in the Haftorah that they will have good fortune and great things in the future, if only they can be like Abraham, following God’s commandments and resisting the allure of idols.
