Make sure you turn every page to get all the news; don’t
stop when you come to the ads and donations. There’s more all
the way to the last page!
Brotherhoods Come Together in Chesed
Temple Beth Emunah, for the past 14 years
that I know of, has been feeding the
homeless on Christmas Day. Now that our
Brotherhoods have merged, it was approved
at the last meeting that this would be a joint
venture.
We will be provided with nine turkeys and I
pick them up and let them defrost; people
pick them up from me & I will also give you
a pan to cook them in. This is only good for
people that don’t keep kosher. These are NOT Kosher Birds.
Behind the scenes, I will pick up what we need and on
Christmas Day we will meet at Mainspring House, 54 North Main
St. Brockton at 1:30-2pm.
All you need to do is to please cook these turkeys and then let
them cool. On 12/25 when we meet, we will carve the turkeys.
It’s fun, all of us being together doing something special on
Christmas to help others. We have been doing this for years and
many of our Volunteers bring their kids to serve Mainsprings
Clients. I thought now that were about to merge, some of you
might want to get involved. Both Reb Dawvid and Rabbi Foss
agreed it was okay.
So if you would like to volunteer, please call me at 508-649-
9530. I will also have the Brockton Enterprise there to do a
story on us which will be great publicity for both Temples.
Thank You, Jay Dembling

A Lesson from a Youth Written by Erica Morrissey
“Today was NERUSY's Leadership Retreat and it was great. More than that, it made me cry. The whole way
to and from Walmart for the senior activity, the bus was filled with the sounds of us singing. We sang Don't
Stop Believin', Bohemian Rhapsody, and more. But what was really powerful was when after singing
Matisyahu's One Day, the bus driver, a Muslim woman wearing a hijab asked us to sing it again. At the final
strains of the song, she came back over the microphone, and told us that she was so happy to see young
adults so enthusiastic at the prospect of peace. So thrilled to see that youth were so pure and trying to bring
peace to the world, etc. While she continued to thank us for being an awesome group, singing One Day
again, and wishing us good luck for the rest of senior year, I saw many wiping a tear or sniffling into a sleeve.
Our driver's words were so powerful, that while recounting them for my parents in the car and at dinner, I
cried again. I couldn't help it. Her words were inspiring and so full of hope. Leadership, although I gained a lot
through the activities and conversations with everyone, it would not have been complete without the touching
speech from the bus driver. Truly the most meaningful thing I've heard in weeks.”

President’s Message
November was a very busy month indeed! During the last
month Temple Beth Emunah moved in successfully. On
Nov. 7th we welcomed our TBE friends at our first joint
Shabbat, with nametags for everyone. It was a well-
attended Shabbat service and, in my opinion, very
meaningful to all who were there. The service culminated
in an enhanced kiddush sponsored by Brotherhood,
Sisterhood and TBA and catered by our own Dave
Dormady. The following Shabbat brought our first
combined temples’ Bat Mitzvah, with Leah Possick of TBE
leading us beautifully in services along with both Rabbi
Foss and Reb Dawvid. Our sanctuary was full of
congregants from both temples as well as family and
friends of the Bat Mitzvah. A splendid combined Kiddush
followed, catered by Temple Beth Emunah’s Bob
Greenburg.
We have gone through our first 4 weeks of joint Bingo.
Due to the diligent work of the combined Bingo
committees, led by Scott Belgard and Alan Castaline, we
have had a very successful start with an invigorated
attendance (over 175 players per week) resulting in a
good, profitable fundraiser once again.
During this same period we reflected on tragic losses
throughout the world in places such as Paris as well as
that of a local young man from Sharon, MA, Ezra
Schwartz z”l, murdered in Israel. I am buoyed by the
outpouring of the Jewish community in the face of such
tragedies. Locally, over 1,000 people attended Ezra’s
funeral and hundreds of thousands commented on
Twitter and Facebook and emailed friends, all aiming
to highlight the importance and relevance to Jews and
others worldwide of these events and their impact on
all of us. Locally, Bob Kraft called for a moment of
silence for Ezra at the recent Patriots Game and in
doing so, reminded us as Jews of the positive influence
we can have on the world. I am buoyed by all the
emails I got from you about these events and how
they affect our community and am glad that I am part
of a community that cares so deeply.
I reflect upon all this as the seasons of Thanksgiving
and soon Chanukah will start and I am glad to be part
of this community and this family that is Temple Beth
Am.
B’Shalom,
Marc

Thank you for supporting Sisterhood.
This has been an exciting month. As you all know, TBE
moved into our building this month with the sale of their
building complete. On November 7th we had our first
joint service. On November 14th we celebrated the Bat
Mitzvah of a B’Yachad student, Leah Possick. Both
services were well attended and very enjoyable. We are
getting to know each other in the joint kiddushes.
Thank you to all the TBA congregants who are so
welcoming. Thank you to all the TBE congregants who
joined us and participated in the services. We will
continue to have joint services in December. Monthly
Nosh – Learn - Pray services and musical services will
also continue.
TBE, like TBA, has a very talented congregation. We
will be including TBE members in our joint services as
Torah readers, Haftorah chanters and Daveners. We
look forward to the addition of the new voices.
Sunday morning minyans have begun again with a
slightly later start time of 9:00am. Ritual chairs from
both congregations will continue to meet regularly to
insure that the services run smoothly.
This is a bittersweet time for us all as we look back to what we’ve had for many years and forward to an exciting new venture.

The fall months have been beautiful and the colors which have surrounded us have been spectacular to view! As the
colder days approach, our thoughts turn to more indoor activities and where better to look than at “the home of our
family” Temple Beth Am.
At the time of this writing, we are looking forward to hosting our first ever “intimate Shabbat dinner’. We hope all
who attend enjoy the new experience we are bringing the Shabbat dinners at TBA. Hopefully, the word around the
temple is that it was a lovely evening with good food and conversation.
We have welcomed TBE into our building and have shared some joyous moments with them. If the attendance at the
November 7th joint Shabbat service is any indication, we are off to a wonderful time sharing our beautiful building
while we look for our new joint home!
On December 5, after Shabbat services, kiddush, and Reb Dawvid’s class, we are going to offer a game day program
for all who want to join us. During this time, there will be various games available to those who would like to play.
None of the games will require us to write or exchange money. Do you have a favorite game that you would like to
share with others? Then drop it off at the temple prior to the December 5th services and we will include it in our
choices. If we receive good participation at the game hour, we will make a regular part of Shabbat. It would be nice
during the cold winter months to linger a bit longer together.
Our tzedakah can project continues. It would be great if you could drop off you filled cans in the office and ask for
another one!
There is no place like the combined TBA and TBE
synagogue to enjoy beautifully peaceful services and all
the varieties of programs and events which we offer. We
invite you to bring your family and friends to any and/or
all programs that our happening.
Until next time, take care and be well!!

Dr. Paul Weiss
A Lesson from Reb Dawvid
There are beautiful Kavvanot,
Prayers of Intention, that are
associated with each night of
Chanukah. The one linked with the
final night of the festival reads,
”Behold, there will come a time!
And the light of the moon shall become like the light
of the sun,
And the light of the sun shall become sevenfold,
Like the light of the seven days,
When the Lord bind up His people’s wounds and
heals the injuries it has suffered.
In that day, there shall be neither sunlight nor cold
moonlight,
But there shall be a continuous day, of neither day
nor night,
And there shall be light at evening time.
No longer shall you need the sun for light by day,
Nor the shining of the moon for radiance by night,
For the Lord shall be your light everlasting,
Your God shall be your glory.
Your sun shall set no more,
Your moon no more withdraw,
For the Lord shall be a light to you forever.
Cause a new light to shine upon Zion,
And soon may all of us be worthy to enjoy its
light.”
According to tradition, the Menorah in the Holy
Temple illuminated the whole world. Therefore King
Solomon built the temple’s windows wide on the
inside and narrow on the outside, for the temple’s
windows did not convey light into the temple, but
rather were a source of light to entire outside
world.
May this be the light of our Menorah.
Happy Chanukah!

From The Education Director’s Desk
In November, B’Yachad settled nicely into our new
homes: Westfield Child Center on Sunday mornings
and Temple Beth Am on Tuesday afternoons. Thank
you to everyone who has helped in packing, moving,
unpacking and organizing our new spaces. We could
not have had such a smooth transition without all
your help.
The beginning of November brought normal class
days (something with the holidays and the move we
had not really had many of yet). On Sunday,
November 15th, families with children between 2-6
years old gathered for our November PJ Library
program. They learned about Hanukkah, worked on
a craft, heard a story and had a snack! Following
religious school, the teachers gathered for a special
workshop with Gateways staff focusing on “Growth
Mindset”. The Growth Mindset is a way to teach
children that focuses on their own personal growth
and encourages students to do their best in the
classroom.
On Sunday, November 22nd, the Kindergarten and 1st
grade families gathered for their family education
morning. The students came to school in their
pajamas, learned about Jewish nighttime rituals such
as saying Shema before bed, practiced these rituals
with their teddy bears, and made their own Shema
pillow cases. They had a great time and have a lot of
new rituals and ideas to practice at home.
December is going to offer a lot of exciting programs!
On Sunday, December 6th, B’Yachad teachers are
going to Limmud Boston to learn together with Jews
throughout the region. We will not hold regular
religious school classes that morning and we
encourage families to attend Limmud Boston and
Limmud Camp for kids. On Tuesday, December 8th
the school will celebrate Hanukkah together. Join us
at 5:15pm at Temple Beth Am as we light the
menorah and eat wonderful, oily food! Our
December PJ Library event will be Sunday, December
13th at 9:30am. If you know someone with a child
between 2-6 years old, please invite them to join us
for this wonderful monthly program. Finally, we are
very excited that world renowned Jewish singer and
songwriter Dan Nichols will be with us on Sunday,
December 20th at 11am at Temple Beth Am. This
concert is open to the community and is free to
members of Temple Beth Am and Temple Beth
Emunah (tickets are $5 per person with a max $15
per family for non-members). In addition, please join
us for lunch after the concert. Lunch is $5 per person
with a $10 max per family. Please invite everyone
you know for this exciting morning!

Hanukkah (Edited from Aish.com)
In the 2nd century BCE the Maccabees recaptured the Holy Temple in Jerusalem from the Greeks. The first thing they
did was light the golden menorah. They found only one jar of oil, but it burned miraculously for eight days. Today we
light the menorah for eight days to recall that miracle and be inspired by that message. Here are 8 Fascinating Facts
about Hanukkah:
1. The war of the Maccabees was the world’s first ideological war fought by a small band of scholars who engaged in
cunning stealth warfare. In Israel you can visit the caves they hid out in.
2. Around 17.5 million oily donuts (sufganiyot) are eaten in Israel during Hanukkah commemorating the oil.
3. The word Hanukkah means dedication. That’s what it takes to launch a war against a superpower and to light a single
flask of oil which can’t possibly last long enough. With enough dedication G-d creates miracles.
4. Spinning the dreidel was originally done by students who were illegally studying Torah. When the Greek soldiers
would make a surprise raid, students would whip out the dreidl and pretend they were playing a gambling game.
5. Hanukkah is celebrated for 8 days even though the miracle of the oil was that it lasted for 7 days more days. The first
day also counts, thus eight days. This teaches us that nothing happens without G-d
willing it.
6. Throughout Hanukkah each menorah burns through 44 candles. That’s a lot of light to
dispel the darkness.
7. The menorah in the Holy Temple was made of gold. The one that the Maccabees lit
was made out of wood. Your menorah can be made out of any material. You can see a
solid gold replica outside of Aish.com in Jerusalem. It cost 3 million dollars.
8. Hanukkah is not the Jewish Christmas! There is no significance or tradition to giving
gifts. However, it is a tradition to give gelt (money) to the kids as an incentive to learn
Torah. Hanukkah also comes from the Hebrew word “chinuch” meaning education.
Did you know there are several
hiking and biking trails here in
Randolph? That’s not surprising;
the Old Colony Rail Trail goes right
under Main Street and is visible
from the overpass across from
Depot Street. Many people are
unaware these trails exist and
some are even being expanded,
like the trail going from Grove
Street to Powers Farm. David
discovered some of these
unmarked trails while biking around
town.
Using a GPS app called Strava, David mapped out the
actual trail distance and elevation, then along with other
pertinent information, created trail head signs. That was
the easy part. Designing and building the physical sign
boards was truly a collaborative effort, from creating the
structural design to having brackets made to specification
plus utilizing a special printer for the large format
map. Then came the assembly and installation
stage. Using an auger to dig holes four feet deep in the
sand was easy, but Randolph sits
upon a foundation of rocks and
boulders. This made the tasks
dangerous and it took longer than
expected. The most difficult part of
the entire project, by far, was
doing the very detailed write-up to
document the project, from the
conception to fundraising to
planning and then finished
product. The beautiful end result is
well worth it. The town eventually
plans to include the map
information on the Recreation
Department’s website.
We are very proud of what David has accomplished,
throughout his years in Scouting and especially with
his choosing a project that will benefit our
town. Thank you to everyone who supported David in
so many ways. We truly appreciate it.

Sisterhood News
We had a successful Indoor Yard Sale on November
8th. Thank you to everyone who donated items for
sale, helped with the set up on Friday, the sale on
Sunday and the clean up. Due to the efforts of Janet
Promisel, Janet Silberberg and Gail Hymovitz this was a
successful event and we thank you very much.
Our annual Sisterhood Celebrates program was held on
November 17th. We honored Roberta Bernstein with
the Eva Grossman Lifetime Achievement Award and
Lecee Sandler was named Woman of Distinction. Both
women have worked hard for the Sisterhood over the
years and it was great to honor their commitment and
dedication. We ask the congregation to join us in
honoring these women at our annual Sisterhood
Shabbat on March 26th. Thank you to the kitchen crew
(Cindy Lurie, Nili Shoenig and Susan Hyman) for the
delicious meal, to Natalie Shore for the beautiful table
decorations and to everyone who made the program a
success. We presented Temple President, Marc Silver,
with the first half of our annual pledge.
On December 20th, we are planning a trip to the
Mayyim Hayyim Living Waters Community Mikvah and
Education Center. Anyone interested in attending
should let me know asap; this trip is open to all
members but is limited to twenty. There will be a cost
associated with this program.
We are looking forward to a wonderful New Year’s Eve
party for TBA & TBE members, which would not be
possible without Diane Grossman heading up the
cooking. Don’t miss out in what is sure to be a great
evening. Reservations accepted only with payment.
We expect a large turnout and space is limited. See
flyer in this issue.

Observing Yahrzeit on the anniversary of a loved one’s death is a Jewish tradition. In Judaism, there is a focus on carrying on the memory of those before us from generation to generation. Family and friends light Yahrzeit candles which burn for twenty-four hours, they say the mourner’s kaddish prayer, and often donate money to their temple in honor or their loved one’s memory.
In addition to lighting a candle on the anniversary of the death, the Yahrzeit candle is lit on four other designated days of the year, called Yizkor dates - Yom Kippur, Shemini Atzeret, eighth day of Pesach, and second day of Shavuot.

Brotherhood News
KEEPER OF THE FLAME-2015 This year’s KOF at Temple Emunah in Lexington honored 12 representatives from temples in New England. As we arrived, we were greeted by old friends from other men’s clubs. There was an unending supply of hors d’oeuvres and beverages to satisfy over 350 guests. Our awardee, Jay Wassersug, was surrounded by family and friends, some from Temple Beth Am and older friends whose bonds were never broken. The ceremony started with a D’var from the Rabbi Fel from Temple Emunah who compared the Keepers of the Flame to the warmth of the Torah, both giving strength and security to their communities. Speakers included Mark Grossman as Master of Ceremonies and David Singer, Regional President of the Federation. Instead of the MC introducing each awardee, there was a ninety second video prepared by their respective Temples to introduce the men to the capacity filled sanctuary. These were done in alphabetical order. We sat and waited patiently as each name was called. Jay’s last named begins with “W”. They saved the best for last. We knew we had made the right choice.
FLEA MARKET This was the second major joint function between TBA and TBE Brotherhood. Coordinating the event was Howie Cooper of TBA and Steve Weiner of TBE. Both Howie and Steve put in a great deal of time, working with vendors, laying out the table assignments and last minute shopping to make the flea market successful. Both Brotherhoods owe them a debt of gratitude for their efforts. Some of us stayed all day, most of the day or part of the day, but this was a full team effort. Some of the following names acknowledging the members may be repetitive from the train show, but we think they need to be repeated because we couldn’t do it without them. Thank you to: Floyd Aaron, Ed Baron, Alan Castaline, Jay Dembling, John Giannini, Billy and Selma Kracoff, Harvey Levine, Mike Raphaelson, Morty Saftler, Ed Shoenig, Janet and Marshall Silberberg, Paul Sirk, Herb and Faye Solup, Ellen Weiner, Rob Weiner, Hailey Weiner, Aaron Weiner and Stan Zoll. We wish to thank the custodial staff of Dave Dormady and “Salty” who makes sure everything is in its proper place. We wish to thank all the congregants who donated items for the Brotherhood Tables on the stage. A final thank you goes to the Executive Committee of Temple Beth Am who set aside the Train Show and Flea Market in the Temple Calendar. TRAIN SHOW It takes an engineer to run a train. It takes an engineer to run a train show. This was the first major joint function between TBA and TBE Brotherhoods. TBA had the facility. TBE had the contacts. Each Brotherhood member had his assigned task so there would be no overlaps. We all worked well together. Brotherhood wishes to thank TBE member Alan Castaline, the engineer who led the train. Thank you to following TBE members who gave their time to make the show successful: Alan & Reva Castaline, John Giannini, Rich Goldman, Ira Korim, Billy (The hot dog man) & Selma Kracoff, Morty Saftler, Larry Strumpf, Erick Weihrauch and the entire Weiner family consisting of Steve and Ellen, son Rob and grandchildren Hailey and Aaron. Thank you to the following TBA members who gave their time to make the show successful: Floyd Aaron, Steve Asnes, Howie Cooper, Harvey Levine, Steve Minkofsky, Marshall Silberberg, Paul Sirk and Herb Solup.
SAVE THE DATES: At our first joint Board of Directors meeting on November 2nd we discussed many items of interest to both Brotherhoods. Among them were a possible Thursday night supper and a future dance. Your comments are welcome. In December we are planning a joint breakfast so our members can meet and schmooze. This will be held outside of the Temple. The tentative dates are either Dec 6 or 13. Membership will be notified. On Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, we hope to assist TBE Brotherhood with their annual project of preparing and serving a meal at the MainSpring Homeless Shelter in Brockton. Both Rabbis have given us their permission.
On January 24th, at 9:30am, we will hold our annual Shomrim Breakfast with guest speaker, Norfolk County Sheriff Michael Bellotti. See the flyer in this bulletin.
The World Wide Wrap, sponsored by the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs, will be held on February 7th at B’Yachad in Westfield Academy, across from Temple Beth Emunah’s former location on Torrey St. More information will come in future bulletins. We will be raffling off a set of Tefillin to a student through donations from both Brotherhoods.

THE KIDDUSH KLUB A Special Request
We are sending out an appeal for all congregants
to consider contributing to the Kiddush Klub. Donations
are down and our Shabbat attendance is increasing.
If you have been considering sponsoring a
Kiddush for a special occasion (birthday, graduation,
wedding, ufruf, or in memory of a special someone), now
is the right time to do so. Donations are essential to
supporting our Saturday afternoon kiddushes.
Please speak to David Dormady to make
arrangements. Otherwise, we would appreciate your
Kiddush Klub donations to be made at the temple office.
We thank those who have contributed on a
consistent basis. We are grateful for your continued
support.
The Senior lunch program is
held every Monday. Come early to
renew old friendships and enjoy a
lunch at 12:00 pm. A $3.00 donation
is appreciated.

Arnold & Leona Rubin Adult Education
The Arnold & Leona Rubin Adult Education committee expresses our gratitude for your support, for your kind and generous donations and for your presence at our programs. Your generosity allows us to continue bringing programs of excellence to our community. Thank you!
In addition to our special programs, don’t forget to join us at our regularly scheduled Torah Study classes, led by Reb Dawvid, every Shabbat following Kiddush. Every viewpoint is welcomed, and knowledge of Hebrew is not required; just an interest in learning more about how the lessons of the Torah can have relevance to our lives today.
And don’t miss a very special Concert on December 20th at 11:00 a.m. sponsored by B’Yachad Religious School, with singer/ songwriter, musician Dan Nichols! This is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to get together, all ages, and share the music of one of the most popular and influential Jewish musicians in North America!
The concert is free to all members of TBA & TBE.

“NICHOLAS WINTON: The Power of Good”
An outstanding documentary, and winner of the 2002 International Emmy Award, this is the remarkable story of the courage and determination of one man who saved 669 children from the hands of the Nazis. Some of you may remember that it was shown here at TBA eight years ago. Now, after the recent death of Sir Nicholas Winton at the age of 106, it is most fitting to share this powerful story again. The narrator and guide through the film, Joe Schlesinger, reporter of CBC Television, was one of the rescued children. This program is free and all are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.
