KINDY & PRE-PRIMARY PIRATE DAY

It was a stormy sea on Thursday 13th November, for the Kindy Pre-Primary Pirate Day but this didn't stop the scurvy

pirates from arriving with swashbuckling enthusiasm. They started the day by terrorising the Junior Primary in search of treasure and blimey there was none that could be found. They had a jam packed day completing the obstacle course with each child having to walk the plank, fire the cannons and climb the mast. The cook served up some hard tack grub for morning tea which went down a treat. There were lots of pirate activities and plenty of pirate antics throughout the day. Shiver me timbers treasure was discovered in their very own pirate patch at the end of the day. Arrrrrr!!!!!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL – Peter Callaghan Camps As I write this we have farewelled two excited groups of students off to two very different Camps. We are indeed fortunate that Kojonup District High School has staff who are willing (in these days of heightened litigation) to take on the arduous task of Camp organisation and then be „on-call‟ 24 hours of each day they are away! I applaud Mrs Jannings, Mrs Kowald, Mrs Sullivan, Mrs Cussons, Miss Coole and Mr Trouchet for voluntarily taking on this significant responsibility.

Reports Teachers are close to finalising their report comments and Mr Trouchet (Mr Grammar and Chief Proof Reader) has been carefully reviewing the early drafts. Final grades have yet to be settled on so if you can check the bottom of your child‟s bag to see if they are still carrying some incomplete or not handed in work it could still make a difference.

Countdown Although we have only a scant four weeks of this term left, there is still plenty to do and be involved in. Don‟t listen to any small voices who may suggest that missing school at this time of year doesn‟t matter – the consequence of lost learning opportunities is as serious now as at any time and is to be guarded against.

Staffing The issue of staffing remains my biggest issue at present and although a few positions have been settled I am still some way from having a clear list that I can publish. The matter is receiving almost all of my attention and will be published as soon as possible.

Strategic Plan As indicated earlier we spent our recent Professional Development Day carrying out a review of the KDHS Strategic Plan. We have, in effect, re-written the entire document and in doing so have brought it up to date with our newer staff and also re-aligned it to more closely reflect priorities set for us by the Department of Education. This document, along with our Behaviour Management Policy, will be presented to our School Council for their ratification at the 8

th December meeting.

Copies will be publically available after that process is complete.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL PRIMARY – Jayde McIvor Commonwealth Games Incursion On Monday 17

th November all students from Years 1 to 10 were privileged enough to meet two Australian Commonwealth

Olympians. Kat Downie and Lyndsay Pekin represented Australia in swimming and hurdling. The young women spoke of their triumphs and hardships to achieve their dreams and encouraged the students to set their own goals and try their hardest to achieve them. It was a very inspiring session and the students enjoyed it immensely.

Year 4 and Year 6 Camp I would like to wish the Year 4 and Year 6 students, teachers and parent helpers all the best as they embark on their adventures to The Perth Zoo & Iconic Perth locations, respectively. I am sure they will learn an enormous amount about their locations and the animals as well as having a great time.

Kindergarten Orientation Morning The 2015 Kindy Orientation Morning is on Monday 24

th October. We are running two sessions divided alphabetically from,

A to L at 9:00am – 10:00am and M to Z at 11:00am – 12:00pm, in the Early Childhood Centre. If you know of any child who is not yet enrolled please encourage them to come along to the orientation morning or to contact the school office on 9831 2300 to get an application for enrolment.

Transition Days This year KDHS will be running two transition days, Wednesday 26

th and Thursday 27

th November. We will be welcoming

the St Bernard‟s students for both of these days so they can get a deeper understanding of how a secondary school operates. The Year 6 and 7 students will operate on a Secondary Timetable for both of these days experiencing the range of subjects that we have available at KDHS.

The whole school transition day will be held on the Thursday 27th November, with each year group transitioning up a year

and completing tasks with that particular classroom teacher. This transition will be from 8:50am to 11:00am.

If you have any questions regarding transition please feel free to contact me on 9831 2300.

2015 School Leadership Positions The Year 5 and 9 students will now be starting to think about their interest in holding a School Leadership Position for the 2015 school year. Teachers will be preparing students for their speeches, which will be presented on Thursday 4

th

December. KDHS will have two School Captains (Year 10), two Deputy School Captains (Year 10) and two Primary School Captains (Year 6). Please encourage your child to practice their speech and develop their leadership skills.

Assembly The next assembly will be hosted by the Year 9 and 10 students, Friday 28

th November commencing at 2.30pm, in the

common room.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL SECONDARY – Bob Trouchet Trevor Carruthers, Deputy Principal Katanning Senior High School, spent some time recently, working with our Year 10 students and some of their parents. He described the different pathways available to students for Years 11 and 12 and the employment and training options which they can open up for students. He also helped those travelling to Katanning next year to choose suitable subjects of study. He will be coming over early next year to let the new Year 10 students know about these options. The School Expectations are Show Respect, Be Safe, Follow Instructions and Have Pride. As I often tell students these don‟t just apply at school or to students but would apply to almost everyone in any situation. As an incentive students who are meeting the School Expectations are given yellow tickets. A draw takes place each week and students have the chance to win canteen vouchers, prizes from a prize box or class or individual vouchers. A similar draw takes place for primary students each Monday as well. Some students have let their behaviour slip recently. This has been a little disappointing as there has been a really big improvement over the year. I would like as many students as possible be able to participate in the planned end of year events, such as the Bunbury excursion, and not miss them due to their loss of Good Standing.

FROM THE CHAPLAIN – Julie Sullivan What a busy term it has been so far, and will continue to be. I will be on the Year 6 camp today and tomorrow, so will not be at school. As I have a PD day in Narrogin on the Tuesday, I may not be here on Monday 24th. I am finishing up my BUZ groups this week. I've had lots of fun with the classes concerned. Thanks to the school and to the teachers for allowing me to complete the BUZ programs with them. I wish to let you all know that I am retiring from chaplaincy at the end of the school year. I have been the Chaplain for 12 1/2 years and feel that now is the time for me to hand over the reins to someone else. I don't yet know who that will be, but will keep you informed when I find out. It has been a difficult decision for me to make as I love this school, and think highly of the staff, the students and the parent body. It has been both an honour and a blessing to be in this job. I'm sure you will see me around the place from time to time. Have a wonderful week.

CANTEEN On Thursday 18

th December the canteen WILL NOT be open for lunches, we will be open for counter sales at recess and

lunchtime. A number of people have enquired about whether we can change the day that hotdogs are provided, because of Nude Lunch Day. However the issue for the canteen is that whatever lunch we provide will not comply with the nude lunch system. For those children who would still like to have a hotdog on Nude Lunch Day and not have any rubbish, please send a named container with your order and we will put your hotdog in this unwrapped, thus eliminating any rubbish. COMMONWEALTH GAMES STARS VISIT KDHS On Monday the 17

th November Kojonup DHS was visited by two athletes, Kat Downie and Lyndsay Pekin, who recently

participated in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Kat Downie is a Para Olympian swimmer who was born with Cerebral Palsy. Kat has broken many world records and is the youngest Western Australian Paralympic Gold Medallist who recently won silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the 200m Individual Medley. Lyndsay Pekin is a 400m hurdler, who has had a fantastic year in 2014. Lyndsay made her Australian team debut at the IAAF World Relays in Nassau and claimed silver at the Australian Championships. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games she finished 11

th in the 400m hurdles and helped the 4 x 400m women‟s relay team finish 4

th.

Kat and Lyndsay discussed the importance of goal setting, training and what inspired them to pursue their specific sports. They also fielded some very interesting questions from the students. At the completion of the presentation the girls stayed behind to sign plenty of autographs for the students. Derek Ringrose

FITNESS ROOM Over the last week there have been many eager students‟ coming into the Fitness Room to try out the new equipment. The aim of the room is to increase student awareness about the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle. There will be classes run during lunch times and during Active After School on Tuesday afternoons. There will be a variety of classes offered, aimed at exposing the students to the different types of fitness. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has kindly donated equipment. Below are some pictures of students enjoying the fitness room. Derek Ringrose

LIBRARY NEWS The pick of the week for Lower to Mid Primary:

GO TO SLEEP JESSIE by Libby Gleeson & Freya Blackwood. Jessie is a little girl whose baby sister has recently moved into her room and won‟t go to sleep. The story feels very real and Freya‟s illustrations are gorgeous. I love the ending!

The pick of the week for Mid to Upper Primary: WITHERING-BY-THE SEA By Judith Rossell. This is the first „Stella Montgomery Intrigue‟, written and illustrated by the author. This delightful story features a young girl named Stella who lives in the Hotel Majestic with her three not-very-loving aunts in the town of Withering-by-Sea. Stella is forced to do horrid things like needlepoint and deportment, when all she longs for is adventure. When she witnesses a murder, she gets her wish! The characters are wonderful, the language and fast-paced storyline is appealing and the black-and-white illustrations are superb. Parents, can you please ensure that your children have Library Bags for when they come and borrow books. Leaky water bottles and books are not a good combination in the bottom of school bags.

BOOK CLUB NEWS Book Club Issue 8 brochures have been given to your children this week. This is the last issue for 2014. If you are ordering gifts, I am happy to hold your order here for you to pick up personally. Just let me know when you place your order. Please return your orders (with payment preferably already pre-paid) by no later than the 26

th November to school.

If you have any problems or enquiries, please contact me on 9831 2300 during school hours. Sonya Koster

No membership obligation for this first week for potential new members, although we do ask that all returning members come prepared to pay their fees. Please remember though, pool entry fees are payable for everyone, and children under the age of 10 must have a responsible adult in the vicinity at all times, even while training. Whilst we are in the process of ordering new training gear, can all swimmers please bring good fitting goggles and a pair of flippers for training sessions. A swim cap is advisable as well. Swimming Club caters for swimmers of all ages and abilities, and encourages the participation of children to swim in a non-competitive environment throughout the summer months. The Club philosophy is to help swimmers improve their personal best, achieving fitness and good health all whilst keeping cool and having fun! Training sessions will help refine swimming technique, and build up swimming endurance. Swimming Club would love to see some new faces, but please, only children who have achieved Stage 5 in swimming lessons may participate. Children need to have a proficient breast stroke technique, as Swimming Club is not a forum for swimming lessons. Further information regarding fees and coaching sessions will be available on those days. Any queries, please contact Trish Norrish - 9831 1467.
