DMRC’s role

Funding challenges

Kochi Metro: Institutional Challenges

LAND ACQUISITION:

Widening and expanding of the existing transport

infrastructure is unviable owing to urban congestions.

Its is a laborious and time-consuming process.

Matters get worse when land owners approach the court.

Kerala is one of the most densely populated states in the

country with a density of population of 819 persons per

Sq. km.

Kochi Metro: Technical Challenges

NHAI PERMISSION:

Viaduct is located on the median of the road with elevated

stations.

Alignment traverses through the National Highway 544

(old NH 47) from Aluva to Edappally approx. 11km.

Columns of 1.2 m diameter need to be located in the

median of NH for Metro viaduct.

The requisition for permission to locate columns submitted by DMRC in 2008.

Kochi Metro: Technical Challenges

CIVIL STRUCTURE :

Bed rock stratum is deep in Kochi. Therefore pilling needs

to be in depth.

Kochi pilling depth comes between 30 – 60m.

Sometimes friction pile has to be adopted.

TRAFFIC DIVERSION:

Management of traffic during construction work, major

challenge.

With the help of Kerala Police traffic diversion plans made.

Employing more traffic wardens.

Kochi Metro: Technical Challenges

Planning for integrated Multi Modal Transport

System (MMTS) in Kochi.

2 points where MMTS can be incorporated is

at Vytilla Mobility Hub and Edapally junction.

Integration of Metro station at Edapally with the

bus station and boat jetty constructed at

Edapally canal.

Potential of tourism and other economic

activities.
