In 21th century, the importance of Solar Energy is considerably increased. National and International Associations and Organizations started to produce new projects in order to determine the effect of Solar Energy as alternative energy. One of these associations, TUBITAK encourages Universities to Solar research field and shows that Solar Energy is a usable source by organizing Formula G races. In this case, why we are trying to search and experiment alternative energy resources like Solar Energy? Since Solar Energy converts directly Sun’s solar energy to electrical energy, importance of solar energy increases. Furthermore, Electrical devices supplies energy from stored energy in the batteries. Electrical and Solar devices do not use direct fuel, so they give less harmful emissions to the Weather. If we use Solar or Electrical cars, the given CO2 rate to the environment decreases by %43 -%54. Since Electrical energy is expensive energy resource, solar energy, the cleanest and cheapest energy source, take the place of Electrical energy.

Additionally, In order to investigate the usability of Solar Energy in Educational aspects, Koç University SPIE (The International Society for Optical Engineering) Chapter organized a “mini model solar car race” in 14th May 2006. Race was held in Koç University, Koç Square. Aims of this race are introducing Solar energy and Optics to the children, help to make students notice the beauty of Physics, teaching students in terms of their scientific knowledge, having entertainment among them, contributing them in terms of giving the spirit of team and preparing creative projects.

Figure 1 – Model Solar Car

Rules of the Race

Participant groups to this activity must be at most 5 people, consisting 6-17 age primary, middle and High School team members. Aim of this race is reaching at the shortest time to the end in the 10 m slightly roughly long track. Design of cars is the responsibility of every group by using given kits. SPIE http://www.spie.org/ gives the all race kits. Groups should not take outside help except basic and instructive directions. Group must write their name or number on to the Car. Cars should not have any power supply or storage element. Every car was checked by Jury. If group breaks the laws of this race, group would be automatically disqualified Applications to this race was done by filling out the form in the http://www.smartkids.com.tr/solarcar/ web site.

Race Kits

Every group took at least two kits. Kits were selected especially for middle and high school students’ understanding level. With the Solar Designer's Kit, a team of two students make a solar-powered car using the supplied parts and instructions. The team may modify the car to include their ideas. Other project ideas are suggested. Kit contains the following: solar panel (.45V 400 mA) 1-3/4" x 2-15/16", DC motor, plastic body tube, Pitsco plastic gear font,

two axles, four Pitsco wheels, four 1/8" brass washers, propeller, and instruction guide. Car will travel under bright sunlight.

Figure 2 – Solar Car Kits

Every team can construct various combinations, what are those? 1-Two motor one panel car 2-Two motor two panel series and parallel connections 3-One motor two panel series and parallel connections 4-Different gear systems 5-Different Wheel combinations Then we get tens of various applications of items. Moreover, in order to push 6-17 age students to discover, and research we tried to explain

aim of our race by using hot texts. For instance, Dear Students, here is two solar powered panels that you can use instead of batteries. They are working as explained following; Solar light comes through the surface, they make electrons move. Then a little current

starts to flow. In the below pictures you can see connections of batteries. Instead of batteries you can

think of solar panels. Red cable stands for + (positive pole), and black cable stands for –(negative pole).

Figure 3- Connection Types of Batteries

If you would like to connect one red and one black cable together, you should connect other black and red cables to the DC motor in order to get high voltage and low power.

Page 9: Koc Report Dec06 - SPIE

___________________________________________________________________________ 9

If you would like to connect red cables each other, and other blacks each other, you should get low voltage and high power.

Then experiment those techniques and see which one is faster? Of course you shall take in to account friction force decreasing velocity. In order to do

that we tried to lead students to learn thin wheel or thick wheel which one is faster? Competitors Students are either very anxious or enthusiastic about what their car can do…

Race Cars There were various kinds of solar cars reflecting creativity of competitors…

Figure 5- Race Cars Race Track As can be seen below we have constructed three race tracks. Those tracks are built according to giving chances to changed direction cars can get into the straight way by crashing to the slithery walls of tracks. Surface of the tracks is a little rugged, so participant cars had some difficulties. However, groups using optimum design had not many difficulties. Tracks have 10 m length, and 120 cm width.

Figure 7- Jury Members Race Time Race occurred as three categories: one panel solar car, two panel solar car, and four or more panel solar car. There are respectively 5,6, and 2 teams in these categories. Every team tried to finish the race in the shortest time interval.First race is the experimental step, so race results were determined according to race 2. In the one panel category Mert and Rona was the first by 1m 15s time success. In the two panel category Berk and Kerem was the first by 35s time success. And in the last four panel category Sinan was the first by 9 s. Besides in the table - 1 you can find all results.

Race Awards At the end of the race all participant teams took one medal per person. Also because of “14 May Mothers’ Day” all mothers took “Congratulating Mothers’ Day” Medal. It is worth it to see the happy faces of the precious people of World, Mothers. Then the first places of categories won one cup. Also race sponsor “smartkids” gave different kinds of Legos and kits to the participant groups by SPIE activity Grant. To sum up awards were raining cats and dogs.

Figure 8- Race Awards

Result In conclusion, we are aiming to make this organization as a nationwide activity. For example, USA has achieved our aim that they do this activity in the name of “Junior Solar Sprint- JSS” by sponsorship of US Army and Renewable Energy laboratories. Since this organization requires math and science knowledge for students, and activates the curiosity of students; Science and Engineering authorities focus on these activities. Similarly, it also provides to start technical careers early for students so that they can learn the scientific approach in early ages.

Title: "Nörobilimde optik görüntülemenin rolü". Abstract: Optik görüntüleme son 15 yıldır teknolojik gelimelere kout olarak tıbbın çeitli alanlarında kullanılmaya balanmıtır.
