    Aaron achieved Scottish Trials Bike novice champion in 2011 in his first year of competition. Aaron also

    competedinthreeBritishchampionshipround,finishinginthetopteninthefirsttworoundsandthenmovingupaclassto intermediate inthe lastround,tosee ifhecouldcopewiththebigstepup in levelfor2012.Hemanagedallthesectionswithagoodresult. AaronslittlebrotherSimon,whowillbeinS1nextyear,alsowonhisclassinScotlandandmanagedthirdoverallintheBritishChampionship.

    This year, he will be doing a full seven round Scottish Championship and a full seven round BritishChampionshipat intermediate level.Thiswill involvetravellingtoEssexandFortWilliamandeverywhere inbetween!

    They havebeen training andpractising through thewinter andhavebeen fortunateenough tohaveMaxChalmers(S2)grandfatherallowing themtousehislargebarntopractiseindoorsthroughthewinter.

    Ivebeenconcernedforsometimethatthere isnotaclearstructure inplacefor libraryoverdues.Following

    recent discussionwith B. Skirrow, BusinessManager, and D. Swinney, PT Curriculum Communication andLiteracy Faculty, we were able to get Knox Academy templates added to the Talis Library ManagementSystem,with the assistanceof the School Librarian FieldOfficer;A. Johnston. I cannowproduceoverduenoticeswhichwillallowbettermanagementofoverdues inschool.Public librarystaff,atthenewlyopenedJohnGrayCentre,willalsobeabletotraceenquiresonlibraryusersaccountsrelatingtooverdueitems.Thiswillprovideabetterserviceandprovidestrongerschool/publiclibrarycommunication.

    Toallowatidyupofborrowerrecordsthefirstsetofoverdueswill includeavarietyofdatesforoverdueitems.Thiswasunavoidableuntilthesystemallowedustogolive.Astimeprogressthedateswillsetintothenaturalflowofthestructureputinplace.

    Pupils can also keep track off their due dates in the My Account section of the library catalogue.

    KnoxAcademyS1SciencehadthefantasticopportunitytovisittheSeabirdCentreinNorthBerwickfunded

    bytheComeniusRegioProject.ThetripstookplaceonthreeWednesdaymorningsthroughoutFebruaryandMarch,withtheyoungsterstravellinginHousegroups.

    TheEducationTeamattheSeabirdCentreconductedasuperblessononthesealifepresentinEastLothian

    inthe lecturetheatre.TheyoungstersheardallaboutGannets,Puffins,SealsandGulls,learningabouttheir

    breedinghabitsandadaptationsandmigrationpatternswhichallowthemtosurvive.

    ThegroupshadachancetoexploretheSeabirdcentre,usingcamerasontheIsleofMayandBassRockto

    view the arriving gannets setting up their nests. Pupils learnt (using the handpuppets!!) about the

    communicationbetweenthebirds.Itwasintriguinglearninghowthepatternsofbeaktappingtranslatesto

    differentmeanings. Therewasplenty to smelland see,alongwithaquickquizaround thecentreanda

    viewingofanEastLothianphotographydisplay.

    A short film on the life of a puffinwas shown in the theatre and thoroughly enjoyed by all,withmany

    especiallyenjoyingwhenthepuffinsspringcleantheirnestingburrows!

    A classroom activity led by Knox Teachers encouraged the youngsters to

    considerthevarietyofhabitats inEastLothianand introducedmanybiology

    conceptsincludingspecies,competition,adaptation,communitiesandniches.

    After readingJ.B.Priestley'sAnInspectorCalls,on23rdofFebruary theEnglishDepartment tooka trip into

    GlasgowsTheatreRoyaltoseeStephenDaldrysadaptationoftheplay. Thiswasverywellreceivedbythepupilsattending.

    Duringdinnerat theBirlingscomfortablehome, theBirling familyarecelebrating theengagementof theirdaughterSheilatoGeraldCroft,ayoung,seeminglyrespectableman.ArthurBirlingistheheadofthefamily,SibylBirlingishiswifeandtheyaretheparentsofSheilaandEric. EricBirling,Sheilasyoungerbrother,hasadrinkingproblemthat is ignoredashisparentsdonotsee itofgreat importantandarealsorather ignorantabout theextentof theproblem.At thispointan Inspectorcomes to thedoor speakingofagirls suicidetellingthemthathebelieveseveryoneofthemisresponsibleinsomeway. EventuallyMrBirlingadmitsthatsheusedtobeanemployeeofhiscompany.

    persuades

    and

    intimidates

    the

    Birling

    family,

    and

    Gerald

    Croft,

    toadmit

    their

    involvement

    inthegirlsdeath,evenifindirectly. Eachonehadmisusedtheirpowerandabusedtheirresponsibilities themainthemeoftheplay forvariousreasons,suchasgreed,prideor jealousy.OncetheInspector leavestheBirlingshousethecharactersseemtoshowonemainemotion,howeverfordifferingreasonstheyoungergenerationfeelguiltandregretforthegirlbuttheoldercharactersshowregretfortheiractionsonlybecauseoftheeffectonthemselves.

    The true identityof the Inspector is neverexplained,but it is clear that the family's confessionsover thecourseof theeveningare true,and that theywillbedisgracedpubliclywhennewsof their involvement inEva'sdemiseisrevealed.

    My friends and I agreed that thiswas a very interesting interpretation of J.B Priestley's play. Thewriter

    (StephenDaldry)managed tokeep themoralmessageof responsibilityvery strong in theplay,whilstalsoaddingaveryfittingandinterestingvisualaspecttotheplay.

    The play starts very quietly, showing children playing outside a closed house. You can hear the Birlingsconversation inside. Slowly, the Inspector showsup,barelyvisible through themist. Ashe speaks to thefamilythehouseopens.

    Duringtheplay,atroopofpeopleappearastheBirlingsrealizehowtheyhaveabusedtheirresponsibilityandpower.Wethoughtthiswastorepresentallthe"EvaSmiths"(ordinarypeople) intheworldwhoarebeingmistreatedbythosewithpowerandmoney.

    Whenwhat theBirling'shaddonehits them theirhousebegins tocollapsearound them. We thoughtthis

    representedtheBirling's"worldfallingapart". Whentheytriedtoactas iftheeventsneverhappenedtheystarttopickupthehouseandrebuilditasiftheyweretryingtorebuildtheirbeliefsandtheirworld.

    Themain theme of the play is responsibility and abuse of power. J.B Priestley shows socialist views ofcommunityandcriticizestheBirlingsviewsof"everymanforhimself",usingdramatic ironytomakefunofArthurBirlingsignorance,byhimsayingthetitanicisunsinkable.

    Theplaywasverymuchenjoyedbyeveryoneonthetripandwegivegreatthankstotheschoolforgivingusthisopportunity and subsidising the costof the trip. TheproductionportrayedPriestley's ideas verywell,beingperceptiveandinsightful.

    Excellence.Themainpresentationfromtheeveningcanbefoundontheschoolswebsite.Feedbackfromthe parentswas very positive andwill helpwith planning the next steps. The schoolwill beworking in

    partnership with the Parents School Partnership; area HM Inspector (Mr P Denning), other secondary

    schools inEastLothian,theSchoolCouncilandtheQualityImprovementOfficersofEastLothiantoensure

    CLIMATEWEEK:TAKEAWALK

    AspartofClimateWeek2012KnoxAcademyhaveenteredaTeamoffivestaff membersintothePathsforAllWalkatWorkStepCountChallengewhichruns(orwalks)fromMonday,5Marchforeightweeks.Wehopedthatwecouldencourageourselvesandotherstowalkmoreoften.Smallchangesinlifestyle,suchaswalkingtoTescoat lunch,rathertakingthecar foronlyafiveminute journeycanmakeachange toyourhealthandalsototheenvironment.Carexhaustemissionsareahugecontributortogreenhousegases,one

    ofthemaincausesofglobalwarming smallactionstakenbymanypeoplecanmakeabigimpactinreducingclimatechange.

    FortheStaff Challenge,everyteammemberwasgivenaSilvapedometerandaskedtorecordtheirdailystepcount. ThisishandedinweeklytotheteamcaptainwhocollatesandsubmitstoPathsforAll. PathsForAllkeepablogand issue lotsof tipsandencouragement,aswellasminichallenges,prizedrawsand storiesduringtheeightweeksofthechallenge.Arunningstepcounttotal foreveryteam ispublishedweeklytofuelthecompetition.

    TheBiologyGirlsteamconsistingofMissJeffrey(TeamCaptain),MissSlowther,MissWard,DrWilson&MissGoodwillberecordingtheirtotalswhichwillberevealedweeklyintheKnoxBulletin.

    ItishopedthatwecanconvertourtotalstepstomilesandaimtowalkthedistancetoourlinkedschoolsinRwandaasacombinedteam8weektotal.Wishusluck.

    positive impact. JabbarSavalanfromAzerbaijanwhowas imprisoned justforpostingamessageonFacebookabout

    theGovernmentwasfreedafteraPresidentialpardon. JabbartoldAmnesty

    AmnestyInternationalisasymbolofhumanrightsandfreedom,notjustinAzerbaijan,

    buteverywhereintheworldwewillnotbescaredoffbyimprisonmentorpunishment.

    Theymayarrestus,buttheycantbreakus. Freedomofspeechisourright,asitisthe

    rightofeveryone.Wewillcontinueourstruggle.

    SinceJanuary,bothpartnersoftheComeniusRegioprojecthavemadevisitstotheirrespectiveschools.

    MrJappy,MissMcPhee,MrsSlowtherandMrsBarbermadea3dayreturnvisittoourpartnerschoolinthe

    cityofKarvina,CzechRepublic.

    Departingon Thursday 26th January, thegroup visitedAuschwitzBirkenau concentration camp inPoland

    beforemakingtheirwaysouthtothecityofKarvina,CzechRepublic.Fridaywasspentvisitingthemountain

    ofRadhost,andthevillageofPustevny,toexperiencetraditionalCzechmountain life.Saturdaywasspent

    visitingthecityofOstrava,beforetravellingnorthtoKrakowfortheirflighthomeearlyonSundaymorning.

    Theweatherwasvery coldduring their stay,butonceagain receivedawarmwelcome from theirCzech

    hosts.

    Agroupof teachers fromKarvina visitedKnoxAcademy from theMonday 12thMarchuntil Thursday 15th

    March.Duringtheirstay,thevisitorsexperiencedOurDynamicEarthandthenewMuseumsofScotland in

    Edinburgh.ThegroupaccompaniedthelatestvisitmadebyS1ScienceclassestotheScottishSeabirdCentre

    NorthBerwick toexperience the typesofhandsonworkshopsoffered topupils.The teacherswerevery

    receptivetothetypesoflearningexperiencestheyobservedduringtheirstay.

    Knox Academy could not provide such variety of experiences for our pupils without thegenerosity and assistance of others and we are fortunate to have such a vibrant and

    helpful local community. We are extremely grateful to those listed below for their

    contributions to the school this term.

    Our grateful thanks go to the EL Education Trust for the kind financial assistance of 400 towards

    the dance barres that now complete our new dance studio/fitness suite area. We were delighted you

    were able to support us.

    The Communication Faculty and French Department would like to thank the Haddington Twinning Committee forits generous funding of various French language initiatives. These include financial support to pay for a two night stayin Aubigny as an extension to the S3/4 Paris Trip this year. We are also extremely grateful for the continued annualfunding of school prizes for French in S2 and particularly for the Alice Burnett Scholarship which annually funds asenior pupil for a month of work experience and cultural exchange in Aubigny.     OnFriday2ndMarch,20S2pupilstravelledtoJohnMuirCountryPark,nearDunbar,toparticipateintheEast

    LothianOrienteeringChampionships.ThiscompetitionwasorganizedbyOutdoorEducationand isoneof

    severaloutdoorchallengeswhichtakeplacethroughouttheyear.

    Itwas a beautiful clear day for the 35minute score competition and the pupils had a great experience

    completing the individual challenge, where all scores counted to give a team total. The orienteering

    challengeinvolvedmapreading,navigationandadegreeofathleticism. Electronicdibberswereattachedto

    thepupilsfingersandtheyweresentoutaroundthewoodlandandbeachareatofindasmanycheckpoints

    aspossibleinthegiventime cheeredonbyMissJeffrey.

    Pupils from Ross High, Musselburgh Grammar and Knox Academy all made the trip and posted some

    excellent scores,withstaff fromeach schoolparticipating in the teacherevent!! Thewinning schoolwas

    calculatedonthebasisofthesumofthetop5competitorsfromeachschool.

    CaitlinOliver (class 2T2)was taking part in her first Scottish Gymnastics event, competing in the ClubHUnder 15

    categoryalongside19otherentrantsfromacrossScotland.Caitlinperformed2wellexecutedroutinesandfinished in

    After increasingplayingnumbersacrosstheboard in2011,KnoxAcademyarenowfocussingrugbyprovisionontwoparticularareasinordertoprovidetheschoolwithafullhouseofplayingteams.

    Knox alreadyhas teamsatS1,U15,U16andU18 level,butwith thehelpofHaddingtonRFCDevelopmentOfficerScottMarnochandothercoachesfromtherugbyclub,theschoolislookingtoformanS2teamaswellasagirlsside.

    Withroughly10secondyearboysplayingweekin,weekoutagainstolderopponentsaspartoftheU15side,wefeelwehaveanexcellentbasisofateam.Hopefullythisdrivecanhelpattracttheextraboysneededtoforma fullS2side.Scottwillbe running trainingsessionseveryFridayon the schoolpitches, starting thisweek(Friday2ndMarch)at12.30pm.Noexperienceisrequired;anyonecancomealongandtryitout.

    KnoxarealsolookingtosupporttheSRU'spushonthewomen'sgamebyofferingrugbytrainingtoanygirlswhomightbeinterestedinplaying.TheideaisthatEastLothianwillformfourteams;twointheeastandtwointhewest,atU15andU18 level.Musselburgh,PrestonLodgeandRossHighwill form thewestside,withKnox,NorthBerwickandDunbarformingthewestside.

    Atrainingmatchwillbeorganisedbetweenthetwosides,beforetheteamshopefullygoontocompete inregionalandnationalcompetitions.
