International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th every year in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. International Women’s Day is a Collective day of global celebration and a call for gender parity.

International Women’s Day was celebrated for the first time by the United Nations Organization’s General Assembly in December 1977. UN adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by the Member States, in accordance with their historical and national traditions.

Role of Women in today’s society

Women who were the most dormant segment of India population have now become active participants in all walks of life. Till now, they were the only unit of the family organization. Now, women are becoming not only a significant unit of the society but also influencing the course of social change in society.Women can help the society in various ways. They can engage in social activities and work for the betterment of the society. As a mother, her role in the development of the emotional psychological aspect of the newborn child has been also very significant. She is not only the creator and maintainer of her child but an educator and disciplinarian as well.

The woman is now an important instrument of social change. The extent of women’s participation in the corporate life is thus the measure of social change in India.

In modern times, many welfare organizations for the women have sprung up. The women are becoming active members of these organizations and contributing a mite to the women’s welfare. Some of the welfare organizations have been formed at the national and state level and most of them are at local level.

Status of women determines a nation’s progress

The progress of any nation is directly related to the status of their women in the society. The countries where women are given equal rights to lead and prosper are the ones termed as developed nations. As Indians, we should pledge to move towards an egalitarian nation where gender disparity will only remain a myth.

The education and empowerment of women throughout the world cannot fail to result in a more caring, tolerant, just and peaceful life for all.
