    Since We Are All Born Equal...

    All human beings are born ree and equal in dignity andrights. Tey are endowed with reason and conscience andshould act towards one another in a spirit o brotherhood.

    What are Human Rights?

    Human rights are rights inherent to all human

    beings, whatever our nationality, place o residence,gender, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion,language, or any other status. We are all equallyentitled to our human rights without discrimination.Tese rights are all interrelated, interdependent andindivisible.

    Human rights are the oundation o reedom, justiceand peace. Respecting the human rights allows theindividual and the community to ully develop.

    Te development o human rights has its roots inthe struggle or reedom and equality everywherein the world. Te basis o human rights such as

    respect or human lie and human dignity can beound in most religions and philosophies.

    Characteristics of Human Rights

    Human rights do not have to be bought,earned or inherited, they belong to peoplesimply because they are human human rightsare inherent to each individual.

    Human rights are the same or all human beingsregardless o race, gender, religion, political orother opinion, national or social origin. We are

    all born ree and equal in dignity and rights human rights are universal.

    Human rights cannot be taken away; no one hasthe right to deprive another person o his/herrights or any reason. People still have humanrights even when the laws o their countries donot recognize them, or when they violate them- or example, when slavery is practised, slavesstill have rights even though these rights arebeing violated human rights are inalienable.

    People have the right to live with dignity; allhuman beings are entitled to reedom, securityand decent standards o living human rights

    are indivisible.

    Born out o the atrocities and enormous loss o lieduring World War II, the United Nations UniversalDeclaration o Human Rights (UDHR) was signedin 1948, to provide a common understandingo what everyones rights are. It contains 30

    articles (sections) protecting civil and politicalrights; economic, social and cultural rights, andundamental reedoms.

    1. We Are All Born Free & Equal. We are allborn ree. We all have our own thoughts andideas. We should all be treated in the same way.

    2. Dont Discriminate. Tese rights belong toeverybody, whatever be our diferences.

    3. Te Right to Life. We all have the right to lie,and to live in reedom and with saety.

    4. No Slavery. Nobody has any right to make usslaves. We cannot make anyone our slave.

    5. No orture. Nobody has any right to hurt usor to torture us.

    6. You Have Rights No Matter Where You Are.

    I am a person just like you!7. Were All Equal Before the Law. Te law is

    the same or everyone. It must treat us all airly.

    8. Your Human Rights Are Protected by Law.We can all ask or the law to help us when weare not treated airly.

    9. No Unfair Detainment. Nobody has the rightto put us in prison without good reason andkeep us there, or to send us away rom ourcountry.

    10. Te Right to rial. I we are put on trial, thatshould be in public. Te people who try usshould not let anyone tell them what to do.

    11. We are Always Innocent ill Proven Guilty.Nobody should be blamed or doing somethinguntil it is proven. When people say we did abad thing, we have the right to show it is nottrue.

    12. Te Right to Privacy. Nobody should try toharm our good name. Nobody has the right

    to come into our home, open our letters, orbother us or our amily without a good reason.

    13. Freedom to Move. We all have the right togo where we want in our own country and totravel as we wish.

    14. Te Right to Seek a Safe Place to Live. I we

    are rightened o being badly treated in ourown country, we all have the right to run awayto another country to be sae.

    15. Right to a Nationality. We all have the right tobelong to a country.

    16. Marriage and Family. All grown-up people

    have the right to marry and have a amily ithey want to. Men and women have the samerights when they are married, and also whenthey are separated.

    17. Te Right to Your Own Tings. Everyone hasthe right to own things or share them. Nobodyshould take our things rom us without a goodreason.

    18. Freedom of Tought.We all have the right tobelieve in what we want to believe, to have areligion, or to change it i we want.

    19. Freedom of Expression. We all have the rightto make up our own minds, to think what welike, to say what we think, and to share our

    ideas with other people.20. Te Right to Public Assembly. We all have

    the right to meet our riends and to worktogether in peace to deend our rights. Nobodycan make us join a group i we dont want to.

    21. Te Right to Democracy. We all have the right

    to take part in the government o our country.All grown-up people should be allowed tochoose their own leaders.

    22. Social Security. We all have the right toafordable housing, medicine, education,and childcare, enough money to live on andmedical help, i we are ill or old.

    23. Workers Rights. All grown-up people havethe right to work, to air wages or their work,and to join any trade union o their liking.

    24. Te Right to Play. We all have the right to restrom work and to relax.

    25. Food and Shelter for All. We all have the rightto a good lie. Mothers and children, people

    who are old, unemployed or disabled, and allpeople have the right to be cared or.

    26. Te Right to Education. Education is a right.Primary school education should be ree. Ourparents can choose where we are educated.

    27. Copyright. Copyright is a special law thatprotects ones own artistic creations and

    writings; others cannot make copies withoutpermission. We all have the right to our own

    way o lie and to enjoy the good things thatart, science and learning bring.

    28. A Fair and Free World. Tere must be properorder so that we can all enjoy rights andreedoms in our own country and all over the

    world.

    29. Responsibility. We have a duty to otherpeople, and we should protect their rights andreedoms.

    30. No One Can ake Away Your Human Rights.As human beings, we are entitled to our rights.No person or higher authorities can restrictthem.

    Even though Universal Declaration o Human

    Rights (UDHR) is not legally binding, it orms thebasis or a world built on reedom, justice and peace.It aims to be a common standard o achievementor all peoples and all nations. UDHR is a widelyaccepted document which is translated into morethan 300 languages; it sets a gold standard orhuman rights. India, being one o the member

    states o the UN and has already ratied boththe International Covenant on Civil and PoliticalRights and International Covenant on Economic,Social and Cultural Rights, it is its duty to protectand promote human rights o all its citizens.
