The 27th edition of the Package Insert
provides a perfect presentation of the
philosophical building blocks of mt‑g:
the presentation of our sales depart-
ment by Bernd Mayer and Dr. Frank
Kuhnert shows how important the
demand analysis is for the client, while
the Best-Practice example “Across for
Medartis” shows what a successful
implementation of this analysis looks
like. All of this only works with the best
employees and an individual training
and continuing education programme.
Our new editor, Konstantin Franke,
explains in an interview how such a
programme can proceed.
The last page of this Package Insert
contains three new columns: documen-
tation of the new construction of our
company building, readers' reactions
and Eve, our new cartoon. In the follow-
ing edition we should like to inform you,
with pictures and interviews, of the pro-
gress of the construction work on our
company building. We are already look-
ing forward to being able to welcome you

Manager from Medartis, draws this
positive conclusion after switching to
an Across solution from mt-g. With the
help of intensive exchange, the chal-
lenges arising from the transition could
easily be overcome. The result is a
time-saving and cost-effective transla-
tion workflow, which meets the high
quality requirements of Medartis AG.
Convinced by the performance and
the advantages of the Across solution,
which, as a sentence-based translation
tool, stores all translated sentences in a
specific Translation Memory and thus
ensures a high level of terminology con-
sistency for all further projects, the pro-
ject managers of Medartis and mt‑g met
to clarify the necessary requirements.
Initially, the type of arising translations,
the languages to be translated as well as
the handling of the technical documents
were defined. As indispensible require-
ments, Medartis demands the assign-
ment of native speakers, contact partner
reliability and absolute correctness of
the translations. As a long-standing part-
ner of Medartis for translation services,
mt‑g meets these high quality
requirements.
Collecting and sifting
As Medartis itself does not work
with Across, the corporation made a
glossary with the technical and compa-
ny-specific terminology in six languages
available to mt‑g. For this purpose, all
documents that had already been trans-
lated were evaluated at Medartis and
communicated to mt‑g in a clear form.
“This glossary does not only contain the
translation of different individual words,
but also complete blocks of text. We
have filtered these out of our different
instruction leaflets and juxtaposed
them in an Excel table clearly and com-
prehensively in six different languages.
In this way, we could guarantee that the
technical and company-specific termi-
nology would continue to be used and
retained”, Ulrike Jehle form Medartis
describes the initial necessary effort.
With the aid of alignments, the glossary
was then installed by mt‑g in the
Across-Tool in the relevant languages.
In the translation workflow, this ensures
that all specialist translators have the
customer-specific terminology available
at all times and use this exclusively. “As
we have relevant regulatory documents
translated, it is of highest priority to us
to be able to rely on the correct transla-
tion of technical terms. In addition, it is
important for us that two or more differ-
ent terms are not used for the same
expression in one language”, Jehle
continues.
High terminology consistency
With Across, reliable consistency of
terminology is guaranteed. In addition
Across works in free-format, so that,
depending on the client’s wishes, Word,
Excel, PowerPoint or DTP formats such
as InDesign can be processed. “For
example, Medartis supplies us with
InDesign-idml files and receives trans-
lated idml files back from us. In doing
so, the data preparation and post-pro-
cessing is optimised in Across for the
idml files. This entails less effort com-
pared to other CAT tools”, Christina
Müller elucidates a consequential

About MedartisMedartis AG, with its main headquarters in Basel, Switzerland, is specialised in techni-cally highly precise implants for the surgical fixation of bone fractures and osteotomies. With nine of its own subsidiaries, the busi-ness is represented in five European coun-tries and in North America, Australia/New Zealand and Mexico as well as with a global network of distribution partners. Medartis develops and markets titanium screws and plates, surgical instruments and system so-lutions for osteosynthesis in the area of the facial bones and extremities. Whoever works in marketing at mt-g
has more than just one function: as a
go-between he ensures that all pro-
cesses between clients, project man-
agers and prospective customers not
only run smoothly, but to the utmost
satisfaction.
During their visits and contact with
clients and prospective customers,
Bernd Mayer, Head of Sales, and Dr.
Frank Kuhnert, Sales Manager, begin by
listening carefully, rather than talking a
lot themselves. Through targeted ques-
tions they can filter out exactly what
requirements and above all what needs
the client has. Standing at their side for
the international sector is Enrique
Guzzetti, who, well-versed in the ways
of the world and proficient in five (!)
languages, maintains contact particu-
larly with the markets in France, Italy,
Great Britain, India and the USA. In
addition, Volker Haug and most recently
Ute Bormann support marketing. “We
always view the individual surroundings
as a whole. Who produced the source
text from what and exactly what infor-
mation is involved? Are these data for
package leaflets, relevant regulatory
documents, marketing material or infor-
mation for physicians?”, Dr. Kuhnert
describes the meticulous approach of
the mt‑g technical sales department. As
a leading provider for translation ser-
vices in Medicine and Pharmaceuticals,
mt‑g collaborates globally with almost
all well-known companies in the sector.
It is precisely through these numerous
contacts into the different industries
(Pharmaceutical, Medical Technology,
Den tal etc.) that the sales staff know
how important optimal analysis is of
individual requirements and wishes.

For an efficient process, the goal is
already defined before the start. “We
discuss the form, the languages, the
purpose, the time frame and the target
group for which the translated text is
needed”, continues Dr. Kuhnert. To sub-
sequently not only ensure a perfect
result, but to also determine the best
possible workflow, the sales team ben-
efits from the close collaboration with
their own workflow. Thanks to Across,
layout specifications of source docu-
ments can thus be conserved much bet-
ter than with other CAT tools. Thus, we
cannot only adapt our service processes
perfectly for Medartis, but we can also
shorten them. It is logical that this auto-
mation is reflected in lower costs.
Besides the streamlined processes, the
continuity of contact partners is also of
great significance for Medartis in the
collaboration with mt‑g. “From the
beginning, we had a permanent contact
partner who was not only available to us
in the transition period, but is also still
available to us today for help and infor-
mation. This is important for us.” This
reliability as well as the convincing per-
formance of Across are two arguments
that lead Ulrike Jehle to her short answer
“Yes!” when asked the question: “Would
you recommend mt‑g’s Across
solution?”
Cost advantage through automationFor the past four years, mt-g has been translating relevant regulatory documents for Medartis AG into five different lan-guages (English, French, Italian, Spanish and Polish). The documents involved are translations of instruction leaflets and product brochures for Medartis implants, instruments and systems. Target groups for the translations are physicians, spe-cialists and hospital personnel worldwide. In the marketing sector, image brochures and product catalogues are translated. In addition, mt-g assumes care of the transla-tion memory. Since 2010, Medartis works with an Across solution: by utilising the Across translation tool, more rapid service processes ensuring 100 percent consist-ency of terminology as well as optimised format-independent data exchange with simultaneous cost reduction can be ac-complished.
mt-g’s specialist sales team works globally. Its focus is on the German-speaking market as well as the markets in France, Italy, India and the USA. In addition to the functions described in the text, the task areas include client acquisition, care of key accounts and regular customers, participation in tenders, support for the marketing department and communication management.

Are you familiar with Saterland Frisian?
Lingua materna, freely translated from
Latin, means “mother tongue”. Latin is
one of the few languages that, although
no longer spoken in the world, is still
taught and learnt at school. In con-
trast, many other languages disap-
pear irrevocably from the Earth. North
Frisian, Yiddish or Sorbian – according
to UNESCO around 13 languages are
threatened with extinction in Germany
alone. Saterland Frisian, a last remain-
ing variant of the East Frisian lan-
guage, is currently one of the most
seriously endangered of our languages
in Germany. Today, it is only spoken
by approximately 1,500 people in the
municipality of Saterland.
Worldwide, around 3,000 languages
– from a current total of 6,000 – are
expected to have died out by the end of
the 21st century. In other words this
means that an additional language dis-
appears every two weeks. This is reason
enough for UNESCO to celebrate and
protect language diversity with the
International Mother Language Day.
Introduced in the year 2000, this com-
memoration day takes place each year
on 21 February and aims to draw world-
wide attention to the significance of lin-
guistic and cultural diversity and
encourage learning of new languages.
Roland Bernecker, the General Secretary
of the German UNESCO Commission,
stated during this year’s international
mother language day that every lan-
guage represents a treasure of knowl-
edge and experiences. And this is to be
safeguarded. Native language educa-
tion was the particular focus of lan-
guage conservers in 2012. In the opin-
ion of the experts, war and expulsion as
well as migration and intermingling of
languages are responsible for the
demise of languages. With their global
influence, the new media also allow indi-
vidual “major” languages, especially
English, to continue to grow. The pros-
pects are still looking good for our
German mother tongue: with 170 million
speakers, more than half of which are
native speakers, German is at position
ten of the most commonly spoken lan-
guages in the world. Chinese still holds
steady in first place.

In the year 2000, mt‑g received
DIN EN ISO 9001 certification as first
European translation company special-
ised in medicine. Since then the system
is being continuously improved. “We
aim for long-term collaboration and

the client and ourselves.” Dr. Kuhnert is
certain that, with this attitude, an indi-
vidual proposal can be drawn up that
entails clear advantages for the clients.
Certainty through translator
qualification
Service-oriented and smooth pro-
cesses are pleasant for all of those
involved in the collaboration and enable
mt‑g to incorporate high quality stand-
ards into streamlined cost structures.
That said, however, it is primarily the
strict quality criteria that convince cli-
ents. All technical translators are native
speakers, who, in addition, can present
credentials of specialised medical or
pharmaceutical knowledge. To guaran-
tee this, all applicants are internally
tested before being accepted into the
translator stock and are subsequently
selected for precisely fitting individual
projects. To this end, mt‑g operates a
team that is dedicated solely to the
selection, qualification and supervision
of translators. The project managers
have long-standing experience in the
coordination of country representa-
tions, for example with linguistic
reviews, as well as in the planning of the
translation process for authorisation
procedures. Project managers and
translators from specialised technical
teams know the critical time schedules,
such as EMA days 210-215. The stringent
requirements are no luxury, but rather a
necessity in order to work in a reliable
and virtually flawless manner in the
highly sensitive field of Medicine and
Pharmaceuticals – even under critical
time constraints.

“Our project managers and editors
check every translation before deliver-
ing it concerning its completeness, the
correct adoption of figures, units, per-
sonal names, formats and compliance
with templates and terminology specifi-
cations. This service is a matter of
course for us due to our quality stand-
ards”, Dr. Kuhnert affirms. And the
reward for all this effort? At this point
Bernd Mayer can give a simple answer
from the marketing perspective:
“Personal recommendations by satis-
fied customers are our most effective
publicity.” Our own satisfaction analysis
assists the sales department in structur-
ing service and processes in an even
more client-friendly manner.

mt-g likes to select its junior staff on
the highest academic level. Thereby,
in addition to theoretical knowledge,
practical capabilities matter particularly.
With Konstantin Franke, a new editor
has started at mt-g, who has already
been clearly convincing in everyday
work during the student employment he
had on three days per week in addition
to his studies.
BPZ: You started at mt‑g as a trainee?
Konstantin Franke: I came across this
traineeship via a job posting at the
University in Germersheim. During this
time it quickly became clear to me that
I wanted to stay with mt‑g. In consulta-
tion with my team, Clinical Studies, we
suggested to management that I contin-
ue to work for three days per week dur-
ing my studies as a “student employee”.
BPZ: Just how did you cope with the dou-
ble burden of studies and a job?
Konstantin Franke: Initially very well. In
the last weeks of my studies, as gradu-
ation approached, it became very stress-
ful. But my team colleagues showed a
great deal of understanding during this
time.
BPZ: Who undertook the first step
towards full-time employment?
Konstantin Franke: Management
offered to take me on after my gradu-
ation.
BPZ: Can you recommend your training
pathway, from a trainee via the “student
employee” through to becoming a per-
manent employee?
Konstantin Franke: Definitely. As the ini-
tial training does take a certain time, you
actually only learn all the tricks towards
the end of the traineeship. During my
work as a “student employee” I was
then already able to provide 100 percent
support to my team.
BPZ: What distinguishes mt‑g as a com-
pany that takes on trainees?
Konstantin Franke: The standard of
technical quality is very high here. The
training was very thorough and I can
continue learning using the good inter-
nal continuing education programmes.
And, from the beginning, it has been fun
to work here.

Tried and tested in practice
When you read these lines, something
new has probably already happened with
the projects supported by mt-g on the
donor platform betterplace.org. Most
recently, two projects had the fortune to
receive donations.
Farm forestry in Kaule
With new plants, their own bee colo-
ny as well as training in the correct
extraction of honey, it was possible to
support the help-for-self-help project in
Nepal. 15 families with a good 100 peo-
ple live in the mountain village. They
should soon be able to feed themselves
again. To this end, the indigenous farm-
ers are gradually being handed out dif-
ferent plants that are aimed to trans-
form the present monoculture into farm
forestry. These especially include mast-
producing trees for livestock farming,
fruit trees and different types of vegeta-
bles. By introducing beekeeping and
training individual family members in
honey production, an additional source
of income is made accessible. At the
same time the bees pollinate the newly
introduced plants.
NATAN TINI – Trees of collaboration
NATAN TINI, the aid project of the
German-African Collaboration Asso cia-
tion reg. soc. [Deutsch-Afrika nische
Zu sam menarbeit e.V. (DAZ)], will pay
two employees from current donations
for one year for their work in a newly
founded tree nursery. Subsequently,
they must acquire their salaries them-
selves. This year the first large foresta-

tion of a total of two hectares of land
shall be started with different indige-
nous types of trees such as vitellaria,
baobab, nere, acacia, palms or mango.
The tree nursery raises trees cost-effec-
tively for planting in school playgrounds,
on village streets and for small forested
areas and tree plantations. For this pur-
pose, the town of Dapaong has made a
plot of land available at its drinking
water reservoir. Likewise from dona-
tions, it was possible to start building a
protective fence around the seedlings.
This will prevent the hungry goats and
cows from grazing on the young shoots.
