Painting Tips

Before you start:Make the surfaces easily accessible by clearing the rooms as completely as possible. Remove pictures, nails hooks, curtains and rods, tables, chairs, light fittings, door handles etc. Gather up bulky furniture in the centre of the room and cover it with a drop sheet. Mask skirting boards and cover floors, particularly if stained or varnished, to protect against paint spots.

Personal protection:Make sure the area is well ventilated. Wear old clothes, a painters hat, gloves where necessary and a mask or respirator when sanding or spray painting. A respirator is also recommended when applying oil based finishes in confined spaces or if ventilation is poor.

Sequence of painting:Painting should usually occur from the top down.

Look for mould in old paint, especially in bathrooms, toilets and kitchens and treat this with anti-mould preparation.

Give the surface a good sanding if required and then dust off. Remove all the flaking paint with a paint scraper. Loose paint flakes will prevent new paint from adhering to the surface.

As an added measure, wash the surface with sugar soap. Once completely dry, you may begin to paint.

In order not to purchase too much or too little paint, here is a 5 step calculation to help you determine how much paint you’ll need:

STEP 1: Calculate the flat square meter area of your roof.

STEP 2: Adjust to the pitch of the roof by adding the following %:
