GREETINGS FROM FR . DAVE

I am struck every year by how fully and deeply we Catholics celebrate Christmas. In addition to our Advent weeks of preparation and anticipation, when we actually get to Christmas itself, we unpack the true significance of the Birth of Jesus in profound ways, beginning the following day.

On the 26th, we celebrate the feast of the martyrdom of St. Steven, the first martyr. Golly, following Jesus is serious business! On the 27th, we celebrate St. John, the author of the fourth Gospel, and the one who so elegantly described Jesus as the WORD that became flesh and dwelt among us. On the 28th, we honor the Holy Innocents — all those infants King Herod put to death in his efforts to maintain power when he heard about Jesus’ birth.

Then on the 29th, St. Thomas Becket, another one who stood absolutely firm on the truth of who Jesus was and what that meant in lived life. Last weekend, we celebrated the Feast of the Holy Family, and this weekend is Epiphany — all continuing to delve deeply into the reality and significance of Jesus Christ.

Epiphany means literally “to show” or “to reveal”. The visit of the Magi reveal that the infant Jesus was truly the newborn King, the long-awaited Savior of all. Remember, the Magi were not Jewish, but were wisdom seekers from the East — and it was they who recognized in Jesus as the Christ.

Pope Francis wrote so clearly that everything we do as a religion is about revealing Jesus to our world, and assisting each person coming to know him personally:

“Jesus is the fresh living water for which we thirst more than for anything else, which he alone can give and nothing else can replace; we lead all to see Him, perfect happiness, when nothing else can satisfy, we lead all to realize their most secret dreams, which no worldly power or pleasure can promise to fulfill!”

May this New Year draw each of us into an ever deeper relationship with Jesus and embracing of his vision for human existence!

Scam alert. Emails have been sent using a derivative of my parish email address, asking for funds for me. Please disregard! I assure you, no one on the parish or school staff will be soliciting for funds. Congratulations to Kim Nguyen and Mike Fantazia, who were married here on December 28th! Blessings to you both, and to all our married and engaged couples.

Congratulations and blessings to Samantha Agamata, Liam Bui, Londyn Dean, Ky Nguyen, Arabella White, and Logan Young, who were baptized this weekend! Funeral services are planned for Vern Newton on January 12th, 11:00am here at Holy Trinity. May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace.

BRETT ’S TWO CENTS

Happy New Year, everyone! In my reading, I came across this little gem from The Art of Loving God, written by St. Francis de Sales. It’s appropriate for new years and for resolutions. See what you think…

“Let us pass on now to the other question — namely, what you can do to strengthen your resolutions and make them succeed? There is no better mean than to put them into practice. But you say that you are still so weak that, although you often make strong resolutions not to fall into the particular imperfection of which you want to cure yourself, no sooner does the occasion present itself than down you go. Shall I tell you why we are still so weak? It is because we will not abstain from food that does not agree with us. It is as if a person who wished to be free from pains in the stomach were to ask a physician what he should do. The doctor replies, 'Do not eat such and such food, because it brings you pain'; and yet the person will not abstain from it. We do the same. For example, we should like to love reproof, and yet we obstinately cling to our own opinions. That is foolishness. You will never be strong enough to bear reproof courageously while you are nourishing yourself with the food of self-esteem. I wish to keep my soul recollected, and yet I will not restrain all sorts of idle thoughts: the two things are incompatible. Ah! How much I wish that I could be steadfast and regular in my religious exercises; at the same time I wish not to find them so trying — in fact, I want to find the work done for me. That cannot be in this life, for we shall always have to labor.”

HAPPY FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY! There is something about the start of a new year that inspires us to a new perfection. Why is that? Let me suggest one possibility. As humans, we are created in God’s image (remember Genesis and the story of creation?!?) and there is a part of our nature that aspires to be what we have been created to be. The start of a new year reinvigorates what we have been given by the grace of God. At our best, we heed that inspiration, which is a good thing when we remind ourselves that this is not something that we can successfully do without God’s help. It is always by making our resolutions for the new year in light of figuring out God’s will for us as we make our choices. With this in mind, what are you resolving to do differently this year? Whatever it is, remember our praying with scripture? How about using those conversations with Jesus to seek what His will is for us as we begin this new year. This Sunday is the Feast of the Epiphany when the Wise Men, following a star, found God made flesh. In that spirit, let’s begin 2019 continuing to seek what Jesus is asking of us. We are created to be an important part of God’s plan of salvation for the world, something that only we have been created to be and do. May God bless us with an epiphany in our own life that leads us ever closer to that revelation and reality. Happy New Year everybody!

National Migration Week: January 6-12, 2019 “The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt.” (Leviticus 19:34)

This year’s theme for National Migration Week, “Building Communities of Welcome”, draws attention to the fact that each of our families has a migration story. Regardless of where we are and where we came from, we remain part of the human family and are called to live in solidarity with one another. What position does the USCCB take on issues like refugees and immigration? We will learn over the next several weeks!

Did you or someone you know have a hard time over the holidays? Perhaps a friend lost a loved one, lost their job, or you know someone

who is fighting a serious illness — and you don’t know what to say or do. Consider giving them a prayer shawl filled with prayers for the person’s needs. Fr. Dave blesses each shawl before they are sent to their new home. Our next meeting is Saturday, January 12th, from 3:00-5:00pm in the conference room of the parish office; come and join us! To request a prayer shawl or to learn more about the Prayer Shawl Ministry, call Linda Dum.

NUMBER OF PEOPLE SERVED

Happy 2019!

Last week I shared various pictures showing what your Community Outreach Ministry does and the impact you have on the local community through your support. This week, in no particular order, a little bit about the various organizations we work with.

➢ Beaverton School District: With over 1,300 students reported as homeless, much needs to be done. We provide support via the back pack program, homeless teens duffel bags and creation of several on-site pantries which we continue to stock on a regular basis. As a member of the Beaverton High School Community Partners committee we continue to learn ways we can do more.

➢ Women’s Life Change Center: “Provides a safe, healing home for women and women with children to transform their lives.” Providing support throughout the year including Thanksgiving meals and Giving Tree Gifts, we demonstrate our love and support to some of the most vulnerable.

➢ Veterans Administration and Veteran’s Family Resource Center: Holy Trinity proudly supports those who have given much to our Country. Support is available throughout the year with extra emphasis at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

➢ Medical Teams International: “Every Person Matters. To God and To Us.” While they do incredible medical support work internationally, hosting their emergency dental van each month has become a true blessing. A patient at our December event who needed multiple teeth repaired said to me afterward, “Best Christmas present I have ever received”.

➢ City of Beaverton: On-going conversations about how to address the very challenging issue of homelessness. Actions taken so far include the opening of a severe weather shelter and support of Family Promise. A “Safe Parking” program is now on the agenda.

➢ St. Vincent De Paul: Bi-monthly hosting of their mobile food kitchen serving 150+ meals each time. Collaborated with them to bring the Feed The Children event to our parking lot. Working with them to expand our relationship with Reser’s Fine Foods.

This is just a portion of those we supported and worked with in 2018. It could not have happened without you and yet so much more needs to be done.

How will you share your time, talent & treasures in 2019?

The 9 Days for Life Novena will take place leading up to and concluding on the annual Day of Prayer

for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children on 1/22.
