Happy Birthday Earth!
Earth Day was born into a world torn by political conflict and inspired by free-
spirited activism. The times were a-changin’, and an unlikely meeting of people and
events led to the first Earth Day celebration on April 22, 1970. On Earth Day, we
remember to appreciate nature and learn ways to protect our environment. Find ways in
your community to help keep the planet clean and protect our environment, not just
today, but every day!
On April 18th , Teen Literature Day, teens gave away over 8,000 books to teens in
hospitals all over the country. Keep informed and checkout atyourlibrary.org
Danita Ruiz, a member of the Newspaper Club, was born on May 18th. What else
is extraordinary about her day is that she entered this world with a broken collarbone.
Yes, this is really true! She healed quickly and no obstacles have held her back from
enjoying life. Incredible!
The Empire State Building in New York City, opened May 1, 1931.
On May 20, 1932, the first solo flight by a woman across the Atlantic Ocean was
made by Amelia Earhart.
On May 24, 1607, the first permanent English settlement was established in
Jamestown, VA.
Clara Barton founded what became the American Red Cross on May 21, 1881.
Day of Silence
By Rachel Bland and Ashton Dilworth
April 11, 2014 was the National Day of Silence.
On this day people showed support of the victims who are
being bullied because of who they are. The students here at
BT who participated stayed quiet throughout the whole day.
This gesture is to acknowledge those who suffer from oppression and showed the
support from thousands of people for those who cannot stand up for themselves,
partly from fear. Admitting the existence of intolerance in todays generation is a
significant step in understanding those who struggle with LGBT name-calling, bully-
ing and harassment in schools. The majority of the BT students who participated
found it difficult to be quiet all day, but were committed to addressing the
problem of anti-LGBT behavior. They understood that this gesture was developed
to illustrate the silencing effect of bullying and harassment on LGBT students and
those perceived to be LGBT. Look for information next year if you want to join in
sending a message and make a difference to promote tolerance.

Inspiring words from our Valedictorian, Breelyn Fite Johnson
By Megan Daly and Danita Ruiz
Q: Did you expect, or set a goal to become valedictorian?
A: No, being valedictorian was not a goal I set. I simply wanted to graduate
and do really well. I have very high expectations of myself.
Q: What are the qualifications to be considered as valedictorian?
A: Exceptional grades of course, community service, and good attendance.
Q: What was your reaction when you were told that you were chosen to be the
Class of 2014 valedictorian?
A: I was a little surprised, but I thought there could be a chance... I put a lot of effort into
school and my involvement in it.
Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: I plan to go to college, Keystone College in Pennsylvania, to study Landscape Architecture.
To be involved in the school community I would like to continue playing soccer, basketball, and
maybe some softball. When I graduate I plan on getting a job in my field. Hopefully!!
Q: What will you miss the most about Bergen Tech?
A: Everything and everybody! My friends, my teachers, my teammates, and the support
everyone has given me to do well.
Q: What advice would you give the junior class about senior year?
A: My only advice is to work hard, stay focused and enjoy it. It goes so fast!
From a sophomore’s perspective……
A Look Into The Future
By: Ashley Acosta
Do you ever imagine what your life
will be like after high school? Will
you will go to college, work, live on
your own, or get married? You can
do anything you want to do as long
as you set your mind to it. Your high
school years will reflect on how you
will move forward. You have to make
sure you get good grades, study hard,
and do all of your homework. It’s
not going to be easy to choose a
college or land that dream job!
That’s why you should have a plan
set up when you’re in high
school. Make a list of colleges that
you want to go to and narrow it
down by what programs they
have and what you want to major
in. So many opportunities await
us; we can be in the business
world, the medical field, or
become an engineer, etc. You can
be anything you want to be. The
real question is what are you go-
ing to do to make your dreams a
reality? Try following the seven
steps to SUCCESS!
Divergent (the movie) By Rachel Bland
If you want to see the movie, I would recommend that you read the book first. If you watch
the movie first you will not understand all that is going on. I thought that the movie was portrayed as
best as possible by movie director, Neil Burger. It was different from the book, in a good way. There
were some parts that they did not put in, that I hoped they would, but it was better off that way. What
I really liked was that it took longer for certain characters to warm up to Tris, the main character.
So grab your favorite candy and enjoy the movie.
Book Review on Divergent By Ashley Acosta
The novel Divergent is based on a futuristic society. It’s about a girl, Beatrice (switched to
Tris) who has to make a life changing choice. She must choose a faction* to live in when she turns
16.There are five different factions. Each one is different from each other in their way of thinking.
The factions are Dauntless (brave), Amity (peaceful), Erudite (intelligent), Candor (honest), Abnega-
tion (selfless). She sets out to establish relationships as soon as she gets to her new faction, some
more questionable than others, but she finds a true friend to help her through the tough times.
I thought the book was inventive in creating a dystopian society. Veronica Roth created an
extraordinary book. From the beginning I was hooked. I just didn’t want to stop reading.
*Faction: A group of people that you can live with.
Do not let your brain drain!

You Can Be Whatever You Want To Be!
by Donna Levine
There is inside you
All of the potential
To be whatever you want to be;
All of the energy
To do whatever you want to do.
Imagine yourself as you would like to be,
Doing what you want to do,
And each day, take one step
Towards your dream.
And though at times it may seem too
difficult to continue,
Hold on to your dream.
One morning you will awake to find
That you are the person you dreamed of,
Doing what you wanted to do,
Simply because you had the courage
To believe in your potential
And to hold on to your dream.
Best wishes to all as we say goodbye to the Class of 2014—

World Blood Donor Day is an event of donating blood to other people and it’s going
to be on Saturday, June 14th. This global event will be hosted in Colombo, Sri Lanka and this
year people again will help give safer blood to women and mothers alike. The date of World
Blood Donor Day is the same day as the birthday of the Austrian biologist and physician Karl Landsteiner (A.K.A
The Father of Transfusion Medicine for his pioneering work) who is famous for not only discovering the polio
virus but also, more importantly, creating the main blood groups. This means that World Blood Donor Day is
celebrated every year on Karl’s birthday! But it’s not just that. World Blood Donor Day is also celebrated to
fulfill the need of blood transfusions to people anywhere in the world.
Health care organizations like the World Health Organization, the International Federation of Red
Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations (IFBDO),
and the International Society of Blood Transfusion, work together to organize the international level programs
to promote support and awareness globally. Despite the blood donations helping nearly 92 million people
worldwide every year, the demand for safer blood transfusions is increasing every day. Some activities to
celebrate this day are quiz competitions, scientific conferences, sports activities, etc. in public places, schools,
colleges, universities, and other educational institutions. So help save a life and donate blood June 14th.
