Two years ago, in my first message, I stated that I would be a good steward of our many resources and that it is a sacred trust to pass this on to future generations. It is hard to believe I would have spent my last months, closing and slowly reopening the club, keeping the club solvent, and helping whomever we can simultaneously. For those who remember, these months have been the greatest threat to our existence since the council paid the clubs bills, the council home roof was leaking, and the idea of selling the campus was gaining traction. I am extremely proud of the men who have done outstanding work by stepping up and working to meet all the challenges listed above. No one here does anything alone. It is a team effort. Nick Beirne, Rene Padilla , and Steven Booth have been the “staff” reopening the campus. They have handled the Takeout and Patio Dining so many have been enjoying. In addition, Nick has handled opening the pool. Mind you they have been doing all this on reduced salaries. So, when you see them, thank them. This team has accomplished much over the last two years. KNIGHT OF THE MONTH VOLUNTEER for SHEPHERD CENTER

Aging in place is a gradual process; and crossing the OLQHWR12'ULYLQJ$OORZHGPHDQVDVLJQLÀFDQWXSKHDYDOin daily life. The Shepherd’s Center of McLean Arlington )DOOV&KXUFKDQDIÀOLDWHRI7KH6KHSKHUG·V&HQWHURIAmerica, tries to help seniors stay in their own home and live independently as long as possible.

We are an all-volunteer organization with NO time commitment asked of our volunteers who drive our clients to doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping, pharmacy and other essential places they need to go at no cost to them. We also do friendly visits and minor handy helper projects. We work through a computer program call “Ride Scheduler” that allows the volunteers to see the rides needed for the next month and then pick any that they want to take.

This is a wonderful way to help others, to meet some interesting seniors who in some cases have no on in the area, and also to meet other great volunteers. Last year we did over 2500 one-way rides. You see that we can always use more volunteers and would be extremely happy to talk to you about our organization.

Please call us at 703-506-2199 to have someone contact you and be sure to look at our website at www.scmafc.org. We hope to hear from you.

medical care, those without homes, clothes, or hope. But that is what we are called to do. We treat everyone with the inherent dignity God gave us. I leave this council better than I found it. It is different in many ways but the same in others. I have enjoyed the supper clubs and retirement lunches, felt the loss of brothers who passed, and felt the love of those receipts of your charity. Your Grand Knight Elect Jim Saenz and the new council officers will do even more great things. The council and club continue to work closely together as we make our way to the new normal. I am confident that even with diminished revenue this year, the club will be presenting the council a check for its charitable efforts. This is the new model of the business running well and supporting the charity. Two years ago, I also started my first message by thanking three people. Now I must thank four. My time as Grand Knight, comes at a price. It is paid by my family. My wife and now three children miss time with me as I attend meetings or deal with issues. Thank you for allowing me the time to serve. As always, I will be around to assist Jim and help in any way I can. Thank you all for the opportunity to lead this council. God Bless. John Rovinsk Jr Grand Knight

INSURANCE AGENTS UPDATE The world is slowly beginning its return to the way things were - at least as much as it can. It’ll likely be months before we know what normal looks like now. We have crammed decades of changes into these last several weeks, and it’s hard to know what change permanent, and what changes is will prove temporary. Not everything is fluid though. I am struck by the resilience of the permanent things - our faith, our fraternity, our families. I’m sure you’ve seen the tremendous ways in which the Knights of Columbus has proven itself equal yet again to this current challenge. Whether it was the establishment of the Leave No Neighbor Behind Initiative, or the launch of the diocesan loan fund, or just the every-day, every-city response of councils across the globe, we have responded as we always do swiftly, powerfully. Sure, we’ve had to cancel some things. We’ve had to have some virtual meetings. We’ve had to stay a safe distance apart. But our distance hasn’t diminished our unity, nor has it changed our impact.

I continue to be proud to be a part of this great organization - especially in moments like this. And I know you are too. That’s why, for us, being financially committed to the Knights is such a point of pride. We all need protection. We all need to plan for retirement. We all need to think about and prepare for life’s what-ifs. But when it comes time to decide who to make those preparations with, and who to choose to buy those products from, we can choose to spend our money with the company who establishes a multi-million dollar loan funds for Catholic dioceses in their most desperate time of need, or we can go another route. We can choose to buy our insurance from a company who leaves no neighbor behind, or a company who has no real concept of who their neighbor is. We can prepare for our retirement with a company whose members are - once again - setting an example of true Christian charity for all to follow, or we can go in a different direction. I hope we’ll chat soon. Robert J. Canter, Jr. FICF, LUTCF, CSA, LACP 301-952-0180 Edward Imperati, CFP® 703-677-6923

COLUMBUS CLUB CAMP / POOLS / GROUNDS The Grand Knight and the Board of Directors designated a Spin Up Committee of the Board to conceptualize scenarios for reopening the grounds and running the summer camp and pools. We have been in constant contact with other pools and camps to share information and best practices as we chart this together. Arlington entered Phase 1 and is gradually reopening. In the next week we will release the Columbus Club Phase 1 Operations Plan. This plan will provide information regarding the grounds, pool, and camp. As with everything the health and safety of our members, families, and staff were and will remain paramount in our planning and execution. Upon your return to campus you will notice several improvements that were started prior to the shutdown and have been completed. The Main Hall façade has been painted and updated! The NEW Pfundstein Patio is now complete! All Three Pools have been resurfaced and look like new! Improvements to the Grand Ballroom and Council Home have been paused but will resume when feasible.

ABC WOMEN’S HEALTH THANKS K OF C Knights of Columbus Councils Boost Pro-Life Mobile Ultrasound Campaign

On June 16, Arlington-based Edward Douglass White Council 2473 of the Knights of Columbus, presented a $19,000 check towards the purchase of a new vehicle to ABC Women's Health and Ultrasound, a pro-life, mobile, ultrasound clinic that provides free ultrasounds for abortion-minded women.

"Throughout Northern Virginia, Knights of Columbus councils have generously supported ABC's mobile ultrasound clinic since we began 8 years ago," said ABC Director Angela Clark, "providing us with our first ultrasound and initial operating funds. Today's donation brings our campaign up to $29,730, well on our way to our $150,000 goal for a new vehicle equipped with examination table, 4-D ultrasound, pregnancy test kits, medical supplies, counseling area and restroom.”

The Knights of Columbus Mt. Vernon Council #5998 and Ascension Council #9285 donated funds for a new 3/4 D Ultrasound machine that will give us an amazing image of a baby on ultrasound as well as showing the baby’s heartbeat in color!

To date, there are several churches, individuals and Knights of Columbus Councils which are supporting the new vehicle campaign. Other Knights of Columbus councils which have donated are: St. Francis Council #11136, Good Samaritan Council #6175, St. Mary of Sorrows Council #8600, Fr. Edwin Kelley Council #5750, Fitzgerald Council #459, John Paul I Council #7165, Holy Trinity Council #7812, Holy Spirit Council #11922, Heart of the Valley Council #10760, St. Bede Council #6828, and Our Lady of the Rosary Council #12982.

For the past 8 years, ABC Women's Health and Ultrasound has operated a mobile clinic showing unborn babies to their mothers ... and watching anxious faces turning into smiles as the image of their baby appears on screen. Parking outside abortion centers and offering one last chance for mother and baby, Northern Virginia's own "Pro-Life 911" has been a remarkable

success: In the past 3 years, ABC has counseled 440 women, given 326 ultrasounds and saved 95 babies – including 5 sets of twins!

ABC began its 2020 Vision Campaign to raise $150,000 to obtain a new vehicle equipped for clinical use. “Looking at that amount in terms of ‘rent’ (which, being mobile, ABC never has to pay) and estimating a 10-year vehicle lifespan amounts to $15,000 a year, a real bargain and even more noteworthy in that ABC Women's Health and Ultrasound can travel to women instead of having them come to ABC. ABC really does meet clients where they are!” Angela said. Why the need for a new vehicle? “Our current vehicle is 20 years old, the roof leaks, the stairs jam, parts are hard to find, and repairs and downtime are disrupting our lifesaving mission,” Angela continued. “Safety is also an issue: a deteriorating fuel line had to be replaced, the engine quit while making a left turn on a 4-lane highway, and evening appointments make reliable transportation a necessity.” “The new Virginia law revoking the requirement for abortion centers to show pregnant women their unborn babies make ABC’s mission more important than ever,” Angela said, “women need to be able to see their babies before making a terrible, irreversible decision. We’re going to prepare for – and extend our reach to meet - an expected surge in clients.”

Individuals and organizations can donate online at https://abestchoice.us/page/5-donate (next to Please select one of the following, choose the pulldown option Vehicle 2020 Vision) or mail a check made out to A Best Choice to P.O. Box 7450, Woodbridge, VA 22195.
