Chapter 1 Summer Vacation

We pulled into my Grandparents drive way and I ran into their big two-story farm house. I always love coming here because the house usually smells of cookies or of Grandma’s famous pies. “Hey! Grandpa.” “Oh, Kristi, good. You’re here!” Grandpa said, putting down his newspaper to give me a hug. Gram came out of the kitchen with her apron on and pot holders in hand. “ Grandma!” “Grandpa!” Alexis and Lizzy, my two younger sisters, squealed together. “Girls! My, you’ve grown!” Grandma beamed. Dad and Mom walked, arms loaded with assorted bags and suitcases. “Kristi, can you help me unload the car, please?” Dad asked me. “Let me help!” Grandpa said, walking towards the door. “Sure, Dad,” I answered gladly. When we stepped off the porch, Grandpa said, “Go unload your horse. I’ll help your Dad.” “Okay! Does it matter which stall I put her in?” “Any that’s open,” Grandpa grinned. I ran to the back of the trailer. As I was leading my Appaloosa mare to the barn, I looked all around me

at the mountains, open fields, and forests. I took a deep breath. “Your gonna love it here girl!” I patted my Appaloosa, “Come on, Apple.” This was the first time I had brought her here because we normally just stay for a week. But this time, we were going to stay for the whole summer! I led Apple into the big, eight stall barn. I put her in the farthest stall on the right. Two other horses were already in the barn. Patches, a blue blanket Appaloosa stallion, and Moonbeam, a blue blanket Appaloosa mare. “Hi Moonbeam!” I said softly, peeking into the stall where the pregnant mare stood resting. She nickered softly. The other horses were still in the pasture. I ran back around the house where Grandpa and Dad were unloading the last few things. “I was beginning to think you got lost!” Grandpa said when he saw me. “Sorry!” I was looking at your beautiful land again.” “Daydreaming, you mean!” Dad corrected. I laughed. “Maybe just a little!” Dad handed me a bag to carry, and we all walked into the house. Mom was helping Grandma set the table. Alexis and Lizzy were laughing at cartoons. “Wash up!” Grandma called from the kitchen. “Oh, I am not that dirty,” Grandpa said playfully. “Harold!” Grandpa smiled, but did as he was told. “He’ll set a bad example!” Grandma muttered, shaking her head. Five minutes later we were all sitting around the table eating country fried steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, peas, bread, and corn.

“Mmmm….Grandma!” “You know, this is my favorite meal, and you make it the best!” “I agree!” mumbled Grandpa carefully, his mouth full of a delicious bite. “Thank you, Dear. And Harold, don’t talk with your mouthful!” When we finished Grandma, Mom, and I cleared the table. Mom took some dessert plates from the cabinet and handed them to me. “What’s for dessert?’ Alexis asked. “Chocolate mousse cake,” Grandma replied, bringing it to the table. “Yummy!” Lizzy bubbled, staring at the delicious cake. Grandma sat it in the middle of the table and cut a slice for everyone. A few minutes later Grandma asked, “Seconds, anyone?” “Don’t mind if I do!” Grandpa replied, anxiously pushing his plate toward her. “You don’t need it. Remember, you’re trying to lose some weight!” “That’s about impossible with your cooking!” Grandpa exclaimed. Grandma smiled, shaking her head side to side. “No amount of flattering is going to get you a second piece, but thank you.” “The girls don’t need a second piece either,” Mom added as she stood to clean up Lizzy. When Grandma stood to begin clearing off the table, Mom handed Elizabeth, my three year old sister, to my Dad, and then looked to my nine-year-old sister, “Go on, Alexis.” Mom and I helped Grandma wash the dishes while Dad and Grandpa kept Alexis and Lizzy busy. “Thanks for supper, Mom,” Mom whispered softly aside Grandma’s cheek.

“Oh, you’re welcome, Dear!” Grandma replied while handing me the last dish to dry. When the dishes were done, we all went to the living room where the rest of the family was happily playing. “Come on girls, time for bed,” Mom said, picking up Lizzy. “But Mom!” Alexis whined. “No but’s! It’s been a long day,” Dad scolded. “Oh, let them stay up just a few more mintues,” Grandpa pleaded. “I want to tell them a story.” “A story! About what?” I chirped. “About a horse named Knight in Shining Armor!” “Can we stay? Can we stay?” Alexis begged in her most desperate voice. “Please, Mom and Dad? I love Grandpa’s stories!” I added. “Alright, alright! I guess a few more minutes wouldn’t hurt,” Mom agreed, sitting down on the couch beside Dad. Lizzy climbed into Grandpa’s lap and Alexis and I sat beside Grandma on the opposite couch. “Once upon a time,” Grandpa began, “a beautiful black stallion roamed these woods and mountains.” “These woods?” Alexis asked, pointing to the back door. “Yep.” Grandpa said with a twinkle in his eye. “Once upon a time, a beautiful black stallion roamed these woods and mountains. He was the brave and strong leader of a herd. Many tried to catch the stallion, but he was too fast and too quick-witted. A boy from the town frequently went to the mountains and then down to the cove to where he knew the herd stayed. Every chance he got, he escaped to the mountains to find the heard, and there, he longingly watched them.

This boy had always wanted a horse and loved the black stallion’s herd. The stallion kept a careful eye on the boy, though. One day, the boy followed the herd to a cliff. On one side there was a river and waterfall, and on the other, a deep forest. The boy watched the herd from a short distance as always. He longed to ride one of the beautiful mares and stroke the foals’ soft coats. But, he knew they didn’t trust him; he wasn’t a part of the herd. That day, the herd was peacefully drinking water from the river while the boy watched from above. Then, out of the forest came a bear charging towards the river. The boy watched the bear as he came closer and closer to him. She was headed toward the waterfall to catch some of the fish jumping up from the water, but to get there, she would have to go past the boy. The boy started to quiver and he practically stopped breathing as the bear got closer and closer. He had nowhere to go. Waterfall on one side, cliff on the other and the bear running toward him! The bear hadn’t spotted the boy yet, but the stallion had eyed her. He charged up the ridge to confront the bear and protect his herd. She saw the stallion and slowed down. He stood right in the bear’s path, stopping her charge. He was the only thing keeping the bear from the herd and also from the boy. The boy watched the bear stand to full height, ready to fight her way past to continue her mission. The black stallion also reared up, signifying he, too, was ready to fight. The stallion made the first move. Rearing up again, he came down hard, shaking the ground like thunder, and lunged his black head, teeth bared, toward the bear. She moved away from his fatal hooves but charged back and stood tall. The stallion circled the bear warily, never looking away. Suddenly, the bear took her giant pay and sung toward his neck.

Page 16: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

11

She growled and grunted as the stallion squealed in pain from the blow. While the stallion moved away to regain his strength, the frustrated she-bear took the opportunity to continue toward the waterfall. That’s when she spotted the boy. The boy froze as the bear stopped, trying to determine what to do. Thinking quickly, the boy slowly, almost imperceptibly, took a step backwards and slipped over the edge of the cliff. He barely had time to grab the edge of the cliff. The bear peered over the edge, watching him hang from the side and struggle to hold on. Out of nowhere it seemed, the stallion bolted for the bear, ears flat against his neck. The bear bolted away from the boy, continuing towards the waterfall. The stallion watched the bear as she reached her destination and stopped, as if nothing had happened, to catch a meal. The boy, still clinging to the side of the cliff by the tips of his fingers, was starting to slip. Having saved his herd from the threat, the stallion bolted for the ridge and ran down to meet his waiting herd. In one last effort to pull himself up, the boy’s hand slipped. He screamed as he fell towards the rocks below.” Alexis and I gasped. Gram pulled Alexi and I closer, and Grandpa continued, “The black stallion pushed to get through the herd quickly, running to the bottom of the cliff to cushion the boy’s fall with his body. Arriving too late, the stallion nuzzled the motionless boy laying in a heap of switch grass, just inches away from a large mass of rocks. Gingerly, the boy opened his eyes to find the black stallion’s muzzle caressing his face. The boy stood up and hugged the stallion, stroking his soft neck, trying to communicate his gratitude. He buried his face in the

stallion’s gleaming coat. As the boy respectfully backed up, the stallion nickered, softly. The stallion had been protecting him from the bear and saved his life. He was accepted in the herd. The stallion turned his side towards the boy as if wanting the boy to ride away with the herd. The boy climbed on his back. Riding quietly in amazement, his mouth agape with wonder, the boy grasped the thick mane and held on tightly with his legs. The stallion trotted around the herd and then cantered up the ridge. The herd followed their leader. Soon, the black stallion started to gallop, forcing the boy to lean in closer to his neck. He was actually riding the beautiful horse! It was almost as if he was flying. The stallion slowed and then came to a stop. The boy opened his eyes and sat up. It had been a dream come true. The stallion came to a stand-still; they were once again at the cove. Now the boy could safely go home. The boy climbed off and ran his hand down the stallion’s neck. He whispered, ‘You saved my life. You came just in time.’ He continued to stroke his brave knight. The boy hugged the stallion one last time and whispered so only the black stallion could hear, ‘Knight in Shining Armor.’ As Knight rounded up his herd to go, he turned and looked intently at the boy. In the sun, his coat shined like armor and he stood tall. The boy waved as Knight galloped away, leading his herd.” “Oh, wow!” Alexis gasped. “That was so cool! I loved it Grandpa! You told it like it was real!” I exclaimed. Grandpa just smiled. “That was a great story, Dad,” Mom told him. “Yes, it surely was,” my Dad agreed as he went over to pick up the sleeping Lizzy.

13

“Goodnight, girls,” Grandma said, wishing her little ones went off to bed. “Goodnight,” we answered. “Kristie. Not you, you go with Grandpa and get the horses settled in for the night,” Dad told me. “OK,” I happily agreed. Grandpa got up from his seat and we both walked out the back door towards the barn. “It is so beautiful here! Look at the sky and all the stars!” Grandpa laughed. “Yep! What did you think of the story?” “It was awesome!” “Good. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Here, you get Sweet Pea,” Grandpa said, handing me the lead rope. “I’ll get Piper.” “OK,” I said. Sweet Pea is Grandpa’s sweet black and white paint mare. Piper is Grandpa’s chestnut gelding. He opened the gate and whistled softly. Both Piper and Sweet Pea came to the gate. I clipped the lead rope to her halter and led her to the barn. “Put her in the stall beside Moonbeam,” Grandpa gently instructed me. “They’re friends.” As I was shutting the stall door and Grandpa was hanging up the lead ropes, Apple nickered softly to me. I walked over to her and patted her muzzle. Grandpa walked into the feed and tack room; I followed him. He handed me two scoops of feed. “One scoop is for Sweet Pea and one for Apple. I’ll get Patches and Piper.” “What about Moonbeam?” I asked. “She has a special kind of feed. Remember, she is a breeding mare. I’ll get hers too.” “Oh, yeah! OK.”

After all the horses were settled for the night, Grandpa and I walked back in to the house. “Goodnight, Kristi. Thanks for the help.” “You’re welcome! Goodnight.” I walked upstairs quietly and got ready for bed. Then I went to the spare bedroom where Alexis and I were staying. Alexis was breathing softly on the far twin bed. Silently, I climbed under the covers and fell asleep, dreaming of Knight in Shining Armor.

Chapter two The Herd

The herd ran by ,almost flying. At the head was a beautiful black horse whose coat shined like armor. ***** “Kristi! Kristi! Wake up!” Alexis yelled, shaking the bed. “Oh, Alexis,” I grumbled, rolling over. “Kristi! Get up! Grandma made pancakes!” Alexis insisted. “She told me to come get you while they’re hot.” “OK, Alexis.” I looked at the clock. Seven thirty. Grandma always got up early, even on a Saturday. Alexis grabbed her robe and then ran downstairs again. I pulled back the covers, sat up, and put on my robe as I put my hair in a ponytail on my way downstairs. The rest of the family was already eating. “Good morning, Dear,” Grandma said, setting another plate full of hot pancakes on the table. “Good morning.” I poured syrup on the stack as Grandma brought me a glass of milk. “Thanks,” I said, waking up enough to remember my manners.

Page 21: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

16

“You’re welcome!” Grandma said, sitting down to eat her breakfast. I thought about my dream. The beautiful black Knight in Shining Armor…. “Kristi! I asked you to pass the syrup,” Mom interrupted. “Oh, sorry.” I handed her the syrup. “I was thinking.” “About what?” Mom asked. “About my dream. I was dreaming about Knight and his herd.” “Oh.” When breakfast was over I went out with Grandpa to the barn. “We need to let them all out into the pasture. Patches can go in that pasture with Piper,” he said, pointing. “Apple can go in this pasture with Moonbeam and Sweet Pea.” “OK, I said, reaching for Apple’s halter to put it on her. I clipped the lead rope to it and then led her to the pasture. When all the horses were out I asked, “Can I go out for a ride today?” “Sure. I would like to, too, but I have some work to do here.” “Can I go now? I love riding in the mountains!” “I guess so, but have your Grandma make you a sandwich to take along. And, run it by your parents first.” “OK! Thanks!” I said, running into the house. I found Grandma and Mom in the living room, talking while Alexis and Lizzy played on the floor. “Mom, can I go for a ride on Apple? Please!” “By yourself?” “Yes. Grandpa has some things he has to do.” “I don’t know, Kristi.” “I know these mountains and forests pretty well. And, I know what to stay away from.”

Page 22: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

17

“OK. I guess. But you have to be back before three o’clock.” “Thanks, Mom!” I said, turning quickly towards the back door. “Oh, wait,” I added, turning around. “Grandpa suggested I take a sandwich.” “That’s a good idea,” Grandma said, getting up to make it. “I can make it, Grandma.” “No, you go get ready. I’ll make your lunch. You’re just like your Grandpa – you know that?” I smiled and then ran upstairs to get my riding helmet. I brushed my hair, adjusting my ponytail to fit under the helmet, and ran down the stairs to the kitchen. “Here you are, Dear,” Grandma said, handing me a small shoulder bag. “Thanks!” “You’re welcome, Dear. Have fun!” “I will! Where’s Dad?” “Oh, he went to town for a little while,” Grandma said with a suspicious smile. “Can I come, Kristi?” Alexis begged. “Please!” “No, I just want to ride around and see if anything has changed since the last time we were here.” “But Kristi!” “Alexis, I will take you for a ride sometime later. I promise! OK?” Alexis put her head down and nodded sorrowfully, “OK.” “I’m sorry, but I want to stretch Apple’s legs out and go fast and stuff.” “It’s ok.” Grandma walked over to us. “Alexis, why don’t you stay and help me with Lizzy? Your Dad just called. Your Mom has to go to town with him for a bit.” “OK!” Alexis cheerfully agreed.

Page 23: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

18

“Why’s Dad need her in town?” I asked. “Oh, no reason,” Grandma said, walking back into the living room. That’s strange, I thought. Why would Dad even need to go into town and why does he need Mom too? I’m sure it’s nothing. I walked out to the barn carrying the shoulder bag and my helmet. I put my helmet on as Grandpa walked out of the barn, leading Apple already saddled and bridled. “Thanks, Grandpa,” I said, putting the shoulder bag over my head. “You’re welcome.” I mounted my beautiful Appaloosa mare and turned her toward the open terrain. “Be careful,” Grandpa warned. “We had a pretty big storm the other night so there’s no telling what’s fallen on the trails.” “OK. Thanks.” “Oh, and make sure to keep an eye out for wild critters.”

“OK.” “Have fun!” Grandpa called from behind as I

kicked Apple into a trot. I reined Apple into a walk once we got to where I couldn’t even see the farm anymore. We both took a big breath of fresh air. Apple nickered softly; I leaned forward and patted her neck.

“I told you you’d love it here girl.” I looked all around. The mountain was up ahead along with the cliff and the cove. A forest was off to the right. “Come on girl, let’s fly!” I whispered to Apple. I squeezed her side a little and she took off in a canter. “Faster girl!” I tapped her sides and she galloped forward!

She galloped until we came to the cove. I slowed her down to a walk. “It’s beautiful!” I said, looking around. Apple cantered up the ridge and we

19

stopped at the cliff’s edge. I dismounted, holding Apple’s reins.

I wonder if this is where the boy in Grandpa’s story had been. There’s a forest, a waterfall, and this cliff. It just has to be it.

“I hope a bear doesn’t come,” I said, chuckling to myself. I mounted my horse again and rode down the bank to the river. We came to a nice shady tree where I tied Apple. I sat down under the big oak tree, one of my favorite places to be, and opened my shoulder bag. Grandma had packed me a ham and cheese sandwich, carrots, apple slices, and a piece of her chocolate mousse cake.

“Grandma must have thought we would be hungry, Girl,” I said to my mare as she was nibbling on the green grass. She looked up at me then continued to munch.

I ate my sandwich and cake. “I’ll save the apple slices and carrots for later, in case we need a snack. Is that ok with you, Apple?” Apple nickered her agreement. I looked at my watch. One forty-five. “We still have a little time.” I mounted and rode Apple to another favorite spot – a wooden bridge over the river. I cantered Apple over the bridge. I stopped her as we stood looking around at the beautiful scenery.

Apple suddenly pricked her ears forward. I looked ahead but didn’t see anything. “What is it girl?” She took a step back and fidgeted. I knew something was just over the hill, but what? Should I turn around and go back or see what it is? I looked straight ahead and listened. I heard what sounded like a horse. Was that a neigh? “Come on girl. Let’s see what it is.” I squeezed Apple’s sides as she moved into a canter. We cantered over the hill and stopped abruptly.

There, in the valley, grazed a beautiful wild herd. A tall, muscular black stallion stood on the other side, wind blowing his mane and tail as he watched over

Page 25: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

20

his herd. The stallion spotted us. He reared and came down hard shaking the ground. I sat bemused, watching the sun make his coat shine like armor, the wind make his mane and tail fly, and him flare his nostrils as he reared again. He let out a shrill noise before shaking the ground once more, warning us again we didn’t belong. Apple got the warning and she turned quickly and galloped down the hill. I kept picturing in my mind the elegant beauty of this strong leader. Apple finally slowed to a trot. I remembered Grandpa’s story. Once upon a time a beautiful black stallion roamed these woods and mountains. “Apple, that must have been him!” Apple turned her ears back to listen to me. “Knight in Shining Armor! The one that saved the boy!” I rambled on in excitement. “I have to tell Grandpa!” Apple just nickered softly, agreeing with me. I stopped her by the bridge so she could get a cool drink because it was such a hot day. I reached into the bottom of my bag to fish out the carrot and apple slices. Apple came over and nuzzled my hand. “Sure, Girl. You can have some.” I put some apple slices and carrots on the ground. Apple crunched the small snack while I looked at my watch. “Two forty-five. Girl, we have to get back.” I gave Apple the last few pieces and then mounted. Apple finished chewing and I nudged her sides. “Come on, Girl. We are going to be late!” I kicked Apple into a gallop. We raced towards Grandpa’s house. “I wish we could live here girl,” I whispered leaning on her neck. “Then we could ride here in the wonderful mountains every day!” Apple continued to gallop towards home; she knew the way. We passed the cliff and waterfall. “No bears today,” I stated just for kicks. Grandpa’s white pasture fence came into view. “Faster girl!” Apple sped up and passed the pasture. I slowed her to a walk to cool down as we approached

the barn. Sweet Pea and Moonbeam nickered from the field. Apple answered their friendly greeting with her own nicker. Moonbeam and Sweet Pea went back to grazing as Apple stopped at the barn. I dismounted as Grandpa walked around the barn. I looked at my watch. Five minutes after three. “I thought your Mom said three o’clock,” Grandpa said, taking Apple’s reins. “She did. I’m only five minutes late,” I answered. Grandpa chuckled. “Well, did you have fun?” he asked, taking Apple’s bridle off. “Yes, it was so great! But really hot too!” Grandpa put a halter on Apple and clipped the cross ties to it. I loosened Apple’s girth to take the saddle off. As I was setting the saddle and saddle pad on the rack in the tack room, Grandpa said, “Rinse her off with the hose from the side of the house. I’ll get her stall ready.” “OK.” I clipped the lead rope to her halter and unclipped the cross ties. “Come on, Girl. You need a bath.” I led Apple to the hose and tied her to the hook. I turned on the hose and felt the water’s temperature before turning toward my hot, sweaty mare. The water’s spray ran down her back as Apple began to cool down, finally feeling calm and able to rest. I sprayed Apple all over before turning the water off. I took the sweat scraper and ran it down her back and sides to get most of the water off. Then, I took a towel and dried her off some more. “You’re still a little damp, but you’ll dry quickly in this heat!”I assured her as I led her back to the barn and put her in the stall Grandpa had prepared. As soon as I locked the stall door, I hung her lead rope and halter and ran out to find Grandpa. I couldn’t wait to tell him about the herd!

After searching around the barn and house, I ran into the house to find him. When I opened the back door, I found Grandpa sitting at the table having lemonade and cookies. “Kristi!” “Sit down and have a snack,” Grandma exclaimed as I sat down. “Sure, thanks!” “Where are Alexis and Lizzy?” “Lizzy is down for her nap and Alexis is upstairs playing. Speaking of which, I bet she would want some cookies and lemonade too.” Grandma rose from her chair to invite Alexis to come down. “Grandpa.” “Hm,” Grandpa answered, munching a sugar cookie. “My ride was really cool because……” “Cookies!” Yum. Thanks, Grandma!” Alexis interrupted. Grandpa reached for another cookie. “Harold, save some for Lizzy, Jay, and Lisa!” Gram scolded, cheerfully. “Mom and Dad aren’t back yet?” I asked. Grandma hesitated a second before answering. “No Dear.” She took a slow drink of her lemonade. “Wonder what’s taking so long?” I pondered aloud. Grandpa cleared his throat. “Well, I am sure they are just having fun.” For seven hours? I thought. Just then Mom and Dad walked in. They were both smiling from ear to ear. As we all got up to meet them, Lizzy started to cry from her room. Mom walked down the hall to get her. Dad went out and brought in some groceries. He made two more trips out to the car. I helped Grandma put away boxes, bottles, cans, and some bread. So they went grocery shopping. I thought to myself again. “What’s for supper Grandma?” I inquired.

“Lasagna, garlic bread, and salad,” replied Grandma. She put some cans up in the cabinet. “Oh, yum.” “Would you like to help?” Grandma asked. “Sure.” I turned to go upstairs as Mom came into the kitchen. “Hi Kristi!” “Hi Mom!” “You need to change out of your riding clothes.” Did you have fun on your ride?” “Yes!” “Good!” Mom walked over to talk to Grandma. “Thanks for watching them, Mom,” Mom said to Grandma. I was walking towards the stairs when I heard Grandma answer, “You’re welcome! Did you get what you needed?” “Yes, but we need to go back Tuesday and maybe Friday before we leave.” What did Mom need? To where do they need to go back and why? Their conversation played back in my mind. Why do they have to go back a second time on Friday? I ran upstairs to change. I wonder if it is a surprise for Lizzy’s birthday. That’s Wednesday, though. But why would they have to go again Friday if that was it. I brushed through my messy hair and walked back downstairs to help Grandma with supper. I know they are up to something because Grandpa, Gram, Mom, and Dad are all acting suspiciously; they have twinkles in their eyes. They are acting like they act at Christmas when they have a gift they can’t tell you about but they know you will really like it. Well, they are excited about whatever this is, too. “There you are, Kristi!” Grandma exclaimed as I walked into the kitchen. She put the lasagna in the oven

and turned the timer. She got out a pan and handed it to me. “The bread and butter are on the counter.” She pointed to them. “Please butter the bread while I make salad.” “Okay, sure.” I got out a butter knife and laid the pan on the counter. I cut the bread loaf into slices, buttered them generously, and laid the slices to rest on the. When I finished, I got the garlic salt from the spice rack and sprinkled it carefully over each slice. “I’m done with the bread.” “Good. We will put it in the oven when the lasagnas are done.” Grandma put the salad on the table. “Kristi, set the table, please.” Grandma opened the oven to check on the lasagna just as the timer went off. I set the table before asking, “Do you want me to get the drinks?” “Yes, you do that, Dear.” Grandma put the lasagna on the counter. “I declare the lasagna done. Please tell everyone to wash up and come to the table while the bread is toasting.” “Okay.” I said, walking towards the living room. I padded softly into the room. Alexis was playing with Lizzy on the floor and they were watching TV. Mom, Dad, and Grandpa were laughing and talking. They stopped talking when they saw me. “Oh, hi, Kristi,” Mom said as she smiled. “Hey.” Grandma said to wash and come to the table. Supper is almost ready.” “Okay, thanks for helping Grandma make supper. It gave us the time we needed to talk about a few things, smiled Dad. “No problem. What did you have to talk about?” I questioned.

Dad looked at Mom, and Mom looked at Grandpa. “Um…” Dad started. “Oh nothing, just some business with his work,” Mom quickly interrupted. “Oh, I said flatly. What does everyone want to drink?” Mom, Dad, and Grandpa said water. Lizzy and Alexis said lemonade. Mom got up and turned the TV off and followed Alexis and Lizzy to wash their hands. I walked back to the kitchen to get everyone’s drinks. Grandma had lasagna and bread portioned out on everyone’s plate. “Everyone can get their own salad,” Grandma stated. She walked back into the kitchen to get napkins. I poured the drinks and sat them on the table. “Oh, Kristi. Could you get the salad dressing out of the fridge please?” Grandma requested. “Sure, Grandma.” “Thanks for helping with supper. You are such a Dear.” “You’re welcome.” A few minutes later we were all eagerly eating the delicious food and talking about the day. Grandpa talked about fixing a place in the fence, polishing some tack, and cleaning the barn. “That needed to be done!” Grandma chuckled. Gram talked about tidying up the kitchen, enjoying time playing with Lizzy and Alexis, and how Lizzy was the cutest thing when she was telling a story. Gram chuckled again. “Like today. She just went on and on about how she wanted a cookie and yet she knew she couldn’t because I hadn’t made them yet. It was adorable!” Grandma chuckled again. Mom and Dad said they had fun shopping, getting lunch, and meeting with some friends. “Who did you meet with?” I asked eagerly. “Just some friends we know,” Mom quickly answered.

Why are they keeping things secret? If it is for Lizzy’s birthday, they could tell me, I thought. I’m sure they’ll tell me soon. “Well, Kristi, how was your day?” Dad asked. “It was awesome! The ride was beautiful! I really wish we could live here!” Mom and Dad looked at each other and smiled suspiciously. “That’s good,” Mom said. “What did Apple think of the land?” “She loved it! We ate lunch under a nice, big, shady oak tree. And it was really nice! Thanks again for the lunch, Grandma!” “You’re welcome,” Grandma smiled. “We passed a cliff and waterfall that looked like the one Grandpa talked about in his story last night. It was beautiful!” “Really?” Alexis asked from the edge of her seat. “Yes! And we rode over a wonderful bridge.” “I love that bridge!” Grandma spoke up. “Sweet Pea loves it too.” “Then Apple heard something and got really nervous.” “Why?” Alexis asked, still quite interested in the conversation. “I decided to find out, so I rode over the hill; we saw a herd.” Grandpa sat up in his chair and looked at me. “On the far hill stood a black stallion, the wind in his mane and tail, his coat shining like armor! He stood motionless, watching over his herd in the valley.” “Wow!” Alexis chimed in. “He was beautiful! He looked exactly like the horse Grandpa described in his story!” Grandpa cleared his throat, keeping his eyes on me for my next words. Alexis’ eyes got bigger as she listened.

Page 32: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

27

“Then he spotted us. He neighed really loudly and reared up! When he came down, the ground shook! He reared again, shrieking his warning. Apple got his point and turned around, quickly galloping away.” “You better be careful,” Grandpa said quietly. “Wild herds can be dangerous,” Gram said. “Was it really Knight, the beautiful, strong stallion that saved the boy from the bear?” Alexis asked excitedly. “Yes, I…” “No, it wasn’t Alexis,” Mom corrected, “Grandpa was just making up that story.” “But Mom…” “No but’s, Kristi,” Dad said. “You were probably just imagining them.” “No they were there! Apple heard them and saw them!” “Sweetheart, you may have seen a wild herd, but it wasn’t Knight from Grandpa’s story,” Mom said. “I think it was…” I mumbled to myself, picking up my fork to eat. “Cool!” Alexis said, eating her last bite of lasagna. Grandpa just sat quietly in his chair, deep in thought.

Chapter 3 Danger

“Can you tell me again about the herd and Knight and everything?” We were in our room getting ready for bed as Alexis asked for the third time. “Please!” Alexis begged. “OK, but this is the last time!” I answered, walking over to my bed and climbing under the covers. “Yay!” Alexis exclaimed while climbing under the covers. I told Alexis everything once more about the ride, the beautiful grazing herd with mares and foals, and the strong leader, the black stallion, wind in his mane and tail, who was watching over the herd. “Wow!” Alexis exclaimed again, for the third time. “Yeah, I know, it was so cool!” “I want to see him! And the herd!” “I want to go back soon.” “Can I come? You said you would take me!” “I know, I know. And I will.” “When?” “I will take you for a ride tomorrow, after church.” “Yes!” Alexis lay down. “Goodnight, Kristi.” I reached over and turned off the lamp between the two beds. “Goodnight Alexis.” I laid there in bed but just couldn’t fall asleep. My mind kept going back to the stallion, standing tall and strong on the hill. He reared and came down

shaking the ground like thunder. I closed my eyes to picture him better. His coat shined like armor …. I awoke to the morning sun coming through the window and the smell of freshly brewed coffee. I sat up and looked at the clock. Seven fifteen. I looked over at Alexis, still sound asleep. Church was in two hours. I got up and put on some shorts and a t-shirt. I ran downstairs to find Gram and Grandpa in the kitchen, talking. “Good morning, Kristi,” Grandpa said, taking a drink of his coffee. He picked up his newspaper. Grandma came over to the table carrying two plates of eggs and sausage. “Good morning, Kristi. Would you like some orange juice?” Grandma offered. “Good morning, and, yes, thank you.” “Grandma went back into the kitchen. Grandpa put down his paper to eat. “Did you sleep well?” he asked. “Yes.” Grandma brought the orange juice back to the table. Mom and Dad walked into the kitchen with Lizzy. They were still in their PJ’s, and Dad looked tired. “Good morning,” Mom said as she put Lizzy in her high chair. Grandma brought more plates of eggs and sausage to the table along with more glasses of orange juice. Alexis came barreling down the stairs, all excited. She sat down and immediately started talking. “I had the coolest dream ever!” Grandma brought Alexis her food before sitting down to eat her own food. “It was about Knight, and I was riding him and we were flying…” “Whoa! Slow down Alexis, I’m not quite awake yet,” Dad said. Grandpa and Mom smiled. “That’s a pretty cool dream!” I said.

30

Grandpa chuckled. “Come on Kristi. Let’s go feed the horses.” “OK, sure,” I said, drinking the last of my orange juice. We both walked outside to the barn. “Are we putting them in the pasture?” I asked. “Yes,” Grandpa answered. I grabbed the lead rope and led Apple to the pasture. After all the horses were in the pasture and their water tub was filled, we walked back into the house to get ready for church. I ran upstairs to find Alexis sitting at the desk and drawing a picture. She was all ready for church in a nice pink dress and Grandma had braided her hair. “You look nice,” I said. “Thanks.” “Whatcha doing?” “Drawing a picture of Knight!” “Oh, cool! Let me see!” I walked over and looked at her drawing. “That’s really good.” Alexis and I had always been really good at drawing. “That reminds me. I need to write or call Allyson and Kaitlyn. They will be waiting to hear from me and I told them I would write and call.” “I need to call Cynthia too,” Alexis said. I went over to my suitcase and pulled out two outfits. “What should I wear? The green dress or the pink skirt and white top?” “Hmmm….I think you should wear the skirt.” “OK, thanks.” “You’re welcome.” Alexis walked back over to the desk and picked up her drawing. “Do you know why Grandpa is being so quiet?” I asked. “No, why?”

Page 36: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

31

“Well, it seems like ever since we were talking about the herd, he has been really quiet.” Alexis shrugged, “I’m sure it’s nothing.” Alexis ran out the door after grabbing her sandals and drawing. I got dressed and put on my locket. I was given the locket on my first birthday with my name on the front. I put a picture of my Mom and Dad on one side and my two best friends, Kaitlyn and Allyson, on the other. I put on my white dress shoes and walked downstairs. Grandma was walking down the hall as I was coming down the steps. “How pretty! Let me braid your hair.” Grandma walked over to the couch and sat down. Alexis was playing with a horse model on the floor. I sat down on the floor as Grandma braided my hair. “Your picture is nice, Alexis!” Grandma complimented. “Thanks!” When Grandma was finished braiding my hair into two French braids, we heard Mom, Dad, Elizabeth, and Grandpa come down the hall, ready for church. We all piled into our cars and drove to church. “You look nice today, girls,” Dad said. “Thanks!” We all replied. We pulled into the church parking lot and all got out. As we were walking in, I saw some girls my age walking in too. They smiled and waved. I did the same as we walked in and sat down. An hour and a half later everyone was standing around, talking and greeting us. The two girls from earlier came over to me. “Hi!” they both said. “I’m Kelsie,” the girl with long brown hair and hazel eyes said, extending her hand.

Page 37: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

32

“And I’m Lilly,” the other girl with blue eyes and shoulder length, wavy blond hair said. “We are sisters. I’m fifteen and she is fourteen,” Kelsie explained. “Hi, I’m Kristi. I am fifteen. It’s nice to meet you.” “It’s nice to meet you too!” Lilly excitedly agreed. “Did you just move here?” Kelsie inquired. “Well no, but I would love to live here. I would miss my friends Kaitlyn and Allyson in Bridle Creek though.” “Bridle Creek, Virginia? We have cousins there!” Lilly exclaimed. “Really? That’s so cool!” “And her name is Kaitlyn!” Kelsie added. “Kaitlyn Sanders?” I said, saying my friend’s name. “Yes, that’s our cousin! She has a sister named Cynthia, and her Dad owns a racing stable,” Lilly said, describing them. “Yes! That’s her! Way cool! Kaitlyn didn’t tell me she had cousins here!” I concluded. “Kristi! Come on, we are leaving!” Mom called from the door. “Well, I gotta go! But it was nice meeting you!” I said to my new friends. “Okay! It was nice meeting you too!” They both said together. “How long are you staying?” Kelsie asked as I turned to go. “Until next Friday. We are staying with my Grandparents.” “Oh, okay great!” “ Maybe we will see you around,” Lilly chimed in. “Okay ,yeah. Bye!” I said. “Bye!” they said in unison.

Page 38: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

33

“Come on, Kristi!” Mom commanded. “Coming!” I ran down the stairs and hopped in the car. “Who were you talking to?” Mom asked as we pulled out of the parking lot. “Kelsie and Lilly. They’re sisters and they are Kaitlyn’s cousins!” “Really?” Mom and Alexis asked. “Yes! So cool!” “That’s interesting,” Dad said. “Drive an hour and a half to meet cousins of a best friend.” “Cool!” Alexsis said. “How old are they?” Mom asked. “Kelsie is fifteen and Lilly is fourteen,” I answered. “That’s nice.” “Maybe you’ll see them around,” Dad said with a smile as he turned into Gram and Grandpa’s drive way. “I’m glad you made some friends,” Mom said. “Me too.” Grandma and Grandpa pulled in beside us. We all walked in and went to change clothes. By the time we all came to the table, Grandma had lunch on the table. She had cooked a chicken in the crockpot all morning and had made a few side dishes as well. We all sat down to eat. We talked about the preacher’s sermon, some people Mom and Dad talked to, and how Grandma was showing Lizzy to her friend Grace. “Grace just loved her!” Grandma said. “Kristi made some friends, too,” Mom said, taking a bite of macaroni and cheese. “Oh, that’s good!” Gram said. “And they are cousins of my friend in Bridle Creek!”

Page 39: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

34

Grandpa chuckled. “Well, ain’t that something!” “Yeah!” “Who are they?” Grandma asked. “Kelsie and Lilly,” I answered. “Oh, they’re sweet girls!” Grandma said. “Yep!” Grandpa chimed in. When lunch was over Grandpa read Lizzy a story before putting her down for a nap. Mom helped Grandma clean up lunch. Dad read the newspaper in the living room while Alexis and I played a game in the floor. Just as we finished our game, Gram and Mom came into the living room. Grandpa was sitting in his chair watching a show. “Can we go for a ride now, Kristi?” Alexis asked. “I don’t know. Ask Mom and Dad,” I answered. “Mom?” Mom sighed and looked at Dad. Dad put down the newspaper. He thought about it for a second. Then he answered, “I guess so.” “Yes!” Alexis jumped up and ran upstairs to get her helmet. “You know, a ride sounds good. And Sweet Pea could use some exercise,” Grandma said. “I was going to say the same thing!” Grandpa added. I ran upstairs to get my helmet and change into riding clothes. When I walked in, Alexis was putting on her boots. “I’m so excited! Can we see the herd?” she asked. “I don’t know. We may not go to the cove or the valley. But I want to see them too.” Alexis ran downstairs while I got ready. When I again burst into the family room, Mom and Dad were still watching television and talking.

Page 40: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

35

“Did Grandma, Grandpa and Alexis already go outside yet?” I asked. “Yes,” Mom answered. “Maybe we can go for a ride before we leave,” Dad said. “Yes, then you could show us all your favorite spots!” Mom said. “Yeah, that would be great!” I said. Mom and Dad smiled. “Have fun!” they both said. “OK. Thanks!” I answered. I ran out the backdoor to the barn. Gram was saddling Sweet Pea, and Alexis was riding Piper around. Grandpa came out of the barn. “Kristi, Apple has a lame leg.” “What?” “How?” “She’s got a rock in her hoof. She’ll heal in a couple of days, but she can’t be ridden today.” “Oh,” I said, slowly walking over to the stall Grandpa had put her in. “I’m sorry, girl.” “You can ride Moonbeam. I’ll ride Patch,” Grandpa offered. “But I thought Moonbeam was your breeding mare?” “She is but she isn’t with foal yet. And, she needs exercise. Patch is kinda hard to handle being a stallion.” “Oh, ok,” I answered, still rather surprised. When all the horses, except poor Apple, were saddled, bridled, and ready to go, we gladly departed. “You’re doing well, Alexis,” Grandma said as we trotted forward. “Yes, really well. Do you take riding lessons?” Grandpa asked. “Sure do. I take them with my friend, Cynthia. Kristi and Kaitlyn train us.” “Really?” Gram asked.

Page 41: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

36

“Yes, and it’s fun!” “Well, Kristi must be a good teacher,” Grandpa said. I smiled. “I have a good teacher, too.” Grandpa chuckled. “I remember as a little girl when you would come visit. You were always with your Grandpa riding horses and working in the barn,” Grandma said, chuckling. “You still do this, too,” Gram continued. “You paid such close attention to what I told you, and you still do,” Grandpa said. “Best student I’ve ever had.” “Thanks, Grandpa,” I said. “Look!” Alexis pointed, excitedly. We all looked up ahead and saw the herd grazing by the cliff. “They haven’t spotted us yet,” Grandpa said while stopping Patch. We all stopped our horses too. “We’ll have to go through the forest,” Gram said. “Yep. Come on, follow me,” Grandpa said. “They’re so beautiful!” Alexis sang out in delight. “Wild and free!” I said. We followed Grandpa toward the forest. “Well, you will be interested to know the land bureau owns this land. They are protecting the herd as well as the land from being used by hunters. Their protection says the herd can’t be captured or wrangled; they are to be left alone to be wild and free, just like you see.” “Ohhh,” Alexis softly squeeled. “Look at the cute little foals.” “Apple was rescued, and she was a wild horse,” I offered. “But if she was wild, why isn’t she still in the wild?” Alexis asked.

Page 42: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

37

“Well, not all herds are protected like this one,” Gram said. “Oh,” Alexis said, still thinking. As we were passing the herd, Alexis asked, “Where do you think Knight is?” “I don’t know,” I answered. “Is that him?” Grandma asked, pointing to a black horse galloping toward the herd. “Yes! Yes! That’s him!” I answered enthusiastically. “Cool! He’s so beautiful!” Alexis responded, equally excited. “Oh. And he’s being chased by a couple of mountain lions!” Grandpa added with concern. “Why doesn’t he fight them?” Alexis asked. “He’s telling his herd to run first,” Grandpa replied. The black stallion screamed to his herd. When he reached them he circled around once and then took off. His herd followed. But one stray mare and foal stayed. The foal tried to run but fell again and again. The mare never left her baby. “What’s wrong with the foal?” Alexis shrilled. “It’s a newborn. Probably born this morning,” Grandpa said. “Oh, no!” The mountain lions!” I shouted, knowing what might happen. The mountain lions got closer and closer. Grandpa kicked Patch into a gallop and ran straight in front of the mare and foal. Knight quickly circled back around to collect the mare and foal. He then disappeared, leading the mare and foal to the awaiting herd. Grandpa and patch continued to circle the mountain lions. The thwarted lions growled, and then one lunged toward Patch and Grandpa. Grandma and I gasped, and Alexis screamed.

Page 43: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

38

Patch reared and came down hard, right on one of the mountain lions. Knight flew around the corner once more and charged for the other mountain lion. As we continued to watch from a distance, Grandpa returned to our group, allowing Knight to finish his message to the mountain lions. The one mountain lion fled back the way he had come, avoiding Knight’s charge forward. Knight stopped at the injured, motionless lion on the ground. He nuzzled the animal. Satisfied he was no longer a danger, Knight galloped away until he disappeared around the cove. Grandma and I both let out a breath. Grandpa and Patch were still breathing heavy. Alexis sat there, stunned, quietly staring at the lion on the ground. Grandpa rode over to it slowly, circled the lion once, and then returned to us. “He’s unconscious and has an injured leg. Let’s get out of here before he wakes up,” Grandpa said leading Patch to the front. We all fell in behind him. “I think that’s enough excitement for one day,” sighed Grandpa. We followed Grandpa back to the farm, only the rustle of the grass and the creak of the saddles disturbing the sound of the wild wind blowing freely across the field.

Chapter 4 A wild scream

When we reached the farm, we dismounted and led our horses into the barn. “I should probably get supper going,” Grandma said quietly. “I’ll take care of Sweet Pea for you, Grandma.” I replied, taking Sweet Pea’s reigns from Grandma while still holding Moonbeam’s reigns. “Okay, thanks Dear,” Grandma answered. “And I’ll get Piper settled.” Grandpa took Piper’s reigns from Alexis. “Thanks, Grandpa.” Alexis walked over to Grandma and took her hand. They both walked into the house. Grandpa and I led each horse into a stall temporarily. I did Moonbeam first, taking off her saddle and her bridle. After hanging them in the tack room, I groomed Moonbeam and gave her a cup of her special feed. I also filled her water bucket. I did the same for Sweet Pea. Grandpa came out of Patch’s stall. “I checked Patch over really well. He seems fine; just a little keyed up.” Grandpa walked into the tack room. I followed him. “That’s good.” I said.

Page 45: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

40

“You know the horse I was talking about in the story?” Grandpa asked. “Yes. Knight in Shining Armor?” “Well…”Grandpa paused to think before going on. “The black horse you saw today was Knight’s son.” “Really? Wow! So, the story was true!” “Yep!” Grandpa smiled, looking at me like I was supposed to say something else. “But how did you know about Knight and his son… unless…” I gasped, finally putting things together. “You’re the boy from the story!” I exclaimed. “Yes, I am!” Grandpa said, beaming a broad smile. “That’s amazing! He really saved you? You were falling and…” Grandpa beamed another big grin, “Yes.” I thought back to the stallion. “How do you know the horse from today was Knight’s son?” “I remember him. I saved him from a mountain lion when he was just a foal. Out of gratitude, I hoped to give something precious to Knight, to sorta repay him for saving my life.” “Wow. You saved Knight’s son?” “Yep.” “What a story, and it’s true! Can I tell everyone at supper?” Grandpa chuckled. “Your Grandmother already knows, but sure we’d all like to hear it again. It’s not a secret; it’s just a special memory to me.” I ran over and gave him a hug before running into the house. Grandma was heating up leftovers from lunch. “Grandma!” I barreled into the kitchen, excitedly. “Yes, Dear, what is it?” Grandma stirred the macaroni.

Page 46: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

41

“Grandpa…” I took a breath. “He’s the boy from the story!” I took another breath. Gram chuckled. “Yes, Dear, he is. Raised that wild stallion like it was his own.” “You mean it didn’t grow up wild?” “Nope. After saving the foal from the mountain lion, Grandpa noticed that the poor little thing was injured. So, he took it in, nurtured it until it was strong, and then set the little fella free,” Gram explained. “Really? Wow! I didn’t know a horse wild horse could be returned to the wild.” “Yes,” said Gram, continuing to smile as she made supper. “So the black stallion we saw today is the foal Grandpa took care of? And his name is really Knight, junior?” “Technically, yes.” Gram said. “That’s amazing!” I ran upstairs to tell Alexis. I ran into the room and found Alexis playing on the floor with some animal models. “Alexis!” “What?” She looked up at me. “You’ll never guess!” “I’ll never guess what?” She stood. I walked over to the bed and sat down. Alexis sat down on hers, waiting to hear something unbelievable. I told her everything. About Knight, the story of his foal, and about Grandpa. “Really?” Alexis exclaimed excitedly. “Yes , really! Grandpa is the boy and he saved the black stallion’s son from a mountain lion. He raised the foal before returning him to the wild to follow his father and become the leader of the herd! The next Knight in shining armor!” “Wow!”

42

“I know!” Isn’t it awesome!” “Definitely!” she agreed, heartily. Alexis and I sat there talking about the whole thing until we heard Gram yell from downstairs, “Kristi! Alexis! Time to eat!” We raced downstairs and sat down in front of our steaming plates of delicious food. After saying the blessing, everyone jumped right into eating and talking. Dad started the conversation. “I heard from Alexis ya’ll had a pretty eventful ride this afternoon.” “Yes, it surely was.” Grandma responded. “Wel,l I’m just glad you’re safe and that nothing too awfully bad happened,” Mom said. “Mom! Dad! You’ll never guess!” Alexis exclaimed excitedly. “What?” Mom and Dad questioned, watching her face expectedly. Alexis, with the help of Grandpa, Gram, and I, told Mom, Dad and Lizzy everything. “Really?” Mom looked at Grandpa for confirmation. Grandpa nodded. “So the horse that Kristi saw, that we told her wasn’t Knight, actually was Knight?” Dad questioned, trying to sort out all the details. “Well, yes, but Knight, Junior,” Grandpa corrected. “That’s pretty cool!” Dad said. “It’s just awesome, isn’t it!” Alexis agreed. “Wow, Kristi, we owe you an apology! I’m sorry, Dear. I really thought…” Mom apologized before I interrupted. “It’s okay, Mom! I understand! But isn’t it so cool!” “Well, yes, it is.” Just then we all heard a low rumble of thunder. “Must be a storm blowing in,” Grandpa speculated.

43

“And after such a very eventful day, I think we should all go to bed early tonight,” Gram suggested. “That’s a good idea,” Mom said, getting up to clear the table with Grandma. Dad picked up Elizabeth, Lizzy mostly, to get her ready for bed. Alexis and I got up to help Gram and Mom clear the table. Grandpa finished his water before taking his plate and cup to the sink. “That’s just so neat, Dad.” Mom said to Grandpa. “What is?” he asked. “The whole thing! A wild horse saving you, and then you having the chance to return the favor by saving his son!” Grandpa smiled. “Yes, I’d say I’m blessed.” Gram chuckled. “I’d say the same.” Grandpa gave everyone a hug before going off to bed. We finished the dishes and went to our rooms. “Good night, everyone!” I said from the stairs. “Goodnight, Kristi.” Mom and Dad said together. “Good night, Dear.” Gram said. Alexis did the same. We both got ready for bed and climbed under the warm covers. We heard another role of thunder as we lay down. “What a great day,” Alexis stated. “Yes, Alexis. What a great day!” An hour later, we were sound asleep, breathing softly, dreaming of the brave leader of the wild herd, Knight in Shining Armor! The storm continued to boom and light up the sky, wetting the ground to cool the earth from the hot dry summer days. I dreamed of Knight. Standing on a cliff, he then reared and screamed a shrill wild scream. He did it again. I rolled over and sat up quickly, fully awake now. “Was that real?” I asked myself.

I listened as the rain beat hard on the window, the lightning and thunder crash shaking the ground. I looked at the clock, 3:45a.m. I lay back down. I’m sure it was a dream, I thought, closing my eyes again. But then, I heard it again! A wild horse neigh coming from the forest just past the pasture! I sat up and listened. There it was again! A horse is in trouble and it’s not a dream! I jumped out of bed and got dressed. I grabbed my rain coat before opening the bedroom door. I glanced over at Alexis; she was sleeping soundly. She was a sound sleeper. I ran downstairs and grabbed the shoulder bag. I threw a couple apples and granola bars down into it and then opened the back door. I put on my raincoat and sloshed out to the barn. There it was again! The shrill, wild scream! I can’t do this myself! I thought. What if the horse is being attacked by a bear or a lion? I have to get Grandpa. A big rush of wind blew my hood off as lightning struck the tree in front. Thunder boomed, ominously. I reached the back door as another lightning strike hit somewhere close by. I ran down the hall to Gram and Grandpa’s room. I opened the door slowly, so as not to wake Grandma. But when I opened the door, I found that they were both awake. “Kristi! What are you doing up?” Grandpa sat up quickly. “No one could sleep through this storm,” Gram said, looking straight at Grandpa. “What is it?” Grandpa asked, concerned at seeing me out of breath. “I…heard…a…” I started, but was out of breath. “You heard what, Dear?” Grandma said, getting out of bed and walking over to me. “You’re so wet and cold!” Gram exclaimed, hugging me. I tried to catch my breath. “Kristi, what’s wrong?” Grandpa asked again.

When I caught my breath I answered. “I heard a wild scream coming from the cove!” I paused to take another breath. “At first I thought it was a dream, but then I heard it again.” I took another deep breath. “A wild horse neigh, Grandpa! A horse is in trouble!” “Are you sure?” Gram asked. “Yes! I ran outside and realized I couldn’t do it by myself!” Grandpa immediately hopped up and started getting dressed. “Go bridle Sweet Pea and Piper! Forget the saddle! I ran down the hall and out the door. I held my hood and ran as fast as I could through the mud to the barn. Apple nickered to me as I grabbed the two bridles from the tack room. I opened Piper’s stall door and walked over to the sleeping chestnut. He opened his eyes as I patted his neck. I put the bridle on the shut the stall door and walked over to Sweet Pea’s stall. She was awake and obviously nervous because of the storm. Another role of thunder boomed. She popped her head up and neighed loudly. “It’s alright girl!” I tried to comfort her. The black and white paint reared in her stall. I let her come down before walking over to her and hugging her neck. “Come on, girl, calm down! I don’t like storms either, but this is important!” I finally bridled the skittish mare and led her out of the stall. Grandpa came sloshing into the barn as drenched as I was. He ran over to Piper’s stall and led him out. “It’s quite a storm!” he yelled over the noise of the pounding rain and rolling thunder. “I know!” “Sweet Pea doesn’t like it at all!” I yelled in reply. The wild call for help came again as we led Piper and Sweet Pea out into the down pour. Grandpa looked

at me. We heard it again, even over the deafening sound of the rain. “That was definitely Knight! Grandpa screamed above the weather. “Are you sure?” I yelled back. “Yes! I would know that squeal anywhere!” We led the horses to the fence. We climbed the fence and mounted our steeds, each ready for battle. Grandpa kicked Piper into action as I did the same with Sweet Pea. We galloped towards the scream. We flew past the fields of open land until we came close to the cliff. Grandpa yelled something to me when we reached the scene, but just then lightning struck a tree close by. I yelled back that I couldn’t hear, but he didn’t hear me. Soon he was close to me. The black stallion screamed again as the lion lunged for him. The stallion was standing in the way of an injured foal. The foal was lying on a rock outcropping, motionless and injured. I kicked Sweet Pea into a canter just as another lightning bolt came from the sky! Sweet Pea squealed in surprise, rearing to full height. Taken off guard by her leap, I fell to the ground, thud. I screamed as another unexpected role of thunder boomed, shaking the ground. I got up but fell again, my ankle throbbing in pain from my first fall. I rolled over and sat up, holding my ankle. Sweet Pea bolted and took off. The rain continued to pour. Lightning struck, thunder boomed, the ground shook. I remembered the scripture lesson the preacher had taught that morning, “Pray without ceasing. And when you’re weak, He will make you strong.” I covered my face with my cold, wet hands and prayed. I prayed that God would help Grandpa fight off the lion, that the foal would be okay, and that my ankle would stop hurting.

47

That’s when I heard the foal squeal and Grandpa screamed, “Kristi!”. I turned and looked at him. He pointed and yelled for me to pick up the small boulder and throw it as hard as I could at the mountain lion. I nodded, not knowing just how I was going to do that. The lion continued to lunge for Grandpa, Piper and Knight. Grandpa took a rope and lassoed the lion, pulling him to the ground. Relieved, Knight collapsed, exhausted from the fight. He had obviously been fighting the lion long before we got there. My knees shook from the pain as I tried to walk. The rain continued to pour it’s weight from the clouds. Reaching the boulder, I picked it up and threw it at the mountain lion with all that I had. I fell to the ground as I watched my stone just miss the lion. Grandpa loosened the rope and set the lion free. The lion , too tired to continue, had given up on this battle. He fled from the scene into the trees beyond.

Chapter 5 Knight in Shining Armor

The wind blew, thunder boomed, lightning flashed, the rain continued to pour down relentlessly. My ankle throbbed.

Knight slowly got to his feet, and walked over to his foal. He nuzzled the small horse, his cuts still open and bleeding. Grandpa trotted over to me, speaking loudly to be heard over the loud storm.

“Are you alright?” “Yes! I think so! My ankle, though, I think it’s

sprained!” I yelled back in my largest voice. Grandpa handed me a whistle.

“Blow this if you have trouble. I won’t go far; I’m going to try to find Sweet Pea!” he yelled, kicking Piper into a gallop as they disappeared over the ridge.

As soon as Grandpa was out of sight, I heard a growl coming from the forest. I shuddered at the horror of what it could be this time. Another role of thunder boomed and lightning struck as a bear came charging out of the forest, looking for an easy meal! The foal was her target, if she could get through Knight. Knight looked up and squealed a warning at the bear. I got to my feet, shivering. I tried to blow the whistle but the bear was getting dangerously close. I ran but tripped in pain, dropping the whistle.

I looked but couldn’t find it in the dark. I sat up quickly and froze in horror; the bear was coming closer

49

and closer. Knight screamed again from behind me. I screamed as loud as I could as another blaze of lightning lit up the sky. The bear growled. She stopped less than three feet away from me. One more leap and her giant body and claws would tear into me. She rose to full height. I screamed again as rain poured, hoping somehow Grandpa would hear me. Just as the bear was swinging her giant paw, Knight squealed, charging in front of her. Knight was so close I could touch him. He reared, coming down inches from the bear. He was protecting me! The bear reluctantly lunged away from his hooves, snarling.

The bear swung at Knight, but Knight moved just in time. Without Knight in the way, the bear lumbered towards the injured foal. She took another step towards me, growling. I said a silent prayer, as she was swinging her giant paw, and then I screamed again. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Knight bolt in our direction as the bear’s swing missed me. She swung again. I had managed to get to my feet, and Knight had almost reached us. He ran right in front of the bear, presenting himself for me to grab his neck and climb on. He bolted away as the bear swung again.

Grandpa charged up to the battle on Piper. He swung his rope and threw it hard at the bear. At this, the bear turned and ran back into the forest, realizing she wasn’t going to get through two horses and riders.

The storm started to calm and subside. I smiled over at Grandpa, reassuring him that I was okay. He looked at me sitting on Knight and smiled back. The little foal let out another squeal, drawing our attention. Knight trotted over to the little black foal. He nuzzled the injured foal gently, as if to say, “It’s going to be okay.”

Grandpa dismounted and walked over to the poor little thing. Knight backed up, knowing Grandpa was offering help. Grandpa gave Knight a pat of thanks;

Page 55: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

50

Knight remembered him. Grandpa ran his hand down the little foal.

“It’s a filly,” he stated, looking at me. “We have to get her back to the farm.”

The rain had stopped and the sun started to come up over the hill. I slid off of Knight’s back and walked over to the filly.

“She looks just like her dad, except for white markings on her legs,” I said, stroking her neck.

Grandpa nodded. “We will put her on Piper. Help me lift her.” Gently, I started to pick her up.

“Careful. Watch her injured leg,” Grandpa instructed. The filly was breathing softly.

“Is she going to make it?” I asked, hoping his answer would be “yes”. Grandpa and I put the filly on Piper’s back carefully before he answered.

“I don’t know yet. We have to get her back to the farm and wrap her leg; we need to call the vet too. I couldn’t find Sweet Pea. We will have to find her once we get this filly back.”

I nodded and then walked back over to Knight. Knight seemed to understand that we had to take her back to the farm. He turned like he wanted me to get going. I looked over at Grandpa who had already mounted Piper. He smiled. I stepped on the rock and climbed on carefully so as not to bump my throbbing ankle.

Knight and Piper trotted past the cliff. “You run ahead and call the vet. Get a stall ready too,” Grandpa instructed. “Okay.” As if Knight understood, he started going faster. I leaned forward on his neck and held on. He sped up to a gallop. I closed my eyes, the wind in my face. It felt like we were flying! Knight slowed to a canter. I opened

my eyes and sat up. Knight continued to canter past the field and pasture. He knew the way. He slowed to a trot as we approached the barn. I patted his neck before sliding off. I limped as fast as I could to the house. My ankle still hurts. It must be sprained, I thought. I opened the back door and stumbled into the kitchen. Grandma was sitting at the table drinking coffee. “Kristi!” she exclaimed, standing up. She gave me a hug. “I was getting a little worried when Sweet Pea came back without you!” “You found her?” “Well, she came back to the farm and I put her in the barn. She was really nervous and skittish,” Grandma explained. “I’m so glad you found her! Grandpa is on his way here with an injured foal. He wants you to call the vet while I get a stall ready,” I said. “Without asking questions Grandma immediately walked over to the phone and dialed a number. I opened the back door and did my best to get back to the barn. Knight nickered to me; he was standing by the fence. I cleaned a stall and shoveled in new shavings. I grabbed the first aid kit from the tack room and put it in the stall. By the time I was finished, Grandpa rode up on Piper. He dismounted and led Piper into the barn and over to the stall I had prepared. He started to lift the filly and I tried to help. Gently we laid her down in the stall. Grandpa tended to her wounds with the first aid kit. I led Piper into another stall, took his tack off, groomed him, and filled his water bucket before sitting on a hale bale outside of the filly’s stall. Grandpa was already wrapping her leg. “Did you tell Gram to call the vet?” he asked. “Yes.”

Page 57: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

52

“Good. He should be here soon then. Her leg is pretty bad. She has a few scratches and scrapes too,” Grandpa said. I limped into the stall and sat down beside the little foal. I stroked her soft neck and talked quietly to her while Grandpa cleaned her other wounds. “Keep doing that. It’s keeping her calm,” Grandpa said. The vet came running in and Grandpa got up to meet him. They shook hands. “Thanks for coming out so early and on short notice, John,” Grandpa thanked him. “No problem,” John said, walking into the stall with his bag. “Alright, little one, what’s wrong?” he asked the little filly. He opened his bag and got out his stethoscope. Dr. John listened to her heart and checked her over. He stood and went out of the stall. “You wrapped that leg pretty well.” “Thanks. How is she?” Grandpa questioned, impatient for the answer. “Well, I think you got to her in time to save the leg, but she is really weak too.” I continued to stroke the filly. “Is she strong enough to make it?” Grandpa asked. “It’s too soon to tell. But give this to her everyday,” he said, handing Grandpa a bottle of medicine. “Keep wrapping the leg and giving her fluids. Call me back if there are any changes.” Grandpa nodded and shook his hand. “Thanks again.” Dr. John nodded before heading back out to his truck. Grandpa came back into the stall. “She needs to eat,” Grandpa said, stroking her face. “What can we give her?”

53

“Formula. I have had to use it sometimes with my foals.” “Oh. So she needs her mom?” “Well, she could be weaned off soon,” Grandpa said. He went to the tack room. A few minutes, he came out with a bottle. He came into the stall and the little foal sat up and looked at him curiously. Grandpa held her head while she drank the milk-like substance. She sucked hard, almost pulling the bottle from his hands. He pulled it out and handed it to me. She looked at me with hopeful eyes. I put the bottle back in her mouth and she continued to suck and pull. “You were hungry!” I said smiling. “That she’ll eat ’s a good sign,” Grandpa said, watching the little filly drain the bottle. When the bottle was empty, I took it out of her mouth. She stared at the bottle and then up at me. “You can’t have anymore,” Grandpa said, taking the bottle. Grandpa walked out of the barn towards the house. Before following him, I hugged the filly and whispered, “You’re going make it girl.” She laid her head down and closed her eyes, resting.

Chapter 6 Pegasus

Grandpa helped me walk into the house. Exhausted and achy, I sank into the cozy chair in the front room. Grandma was making breakfast for the family. My ankle continued to hurt. Grandpa went into the kitchen and talked with Gram quietly. I looked down at my ankle. It was swollen.

Gram came over to me. “Let me see. Oh, I think it’s sprained. You need to keep it up.” She went back into the kitchen. When she came back, she had a bag of ice and a towel. “Here you go, Dear.” She helped me prop it up and put ice on it. “Thanks, Grandma.” “You’re welcome!” She went back into the kitchen and brought out hot plates of hot food to the table. Mom, Dad, and Lizzy came sleepily to the table; the storm had disturbed their sleep. Next, Alexis slowly came downstairs and sat next to Lizzy. “What is everyone doing up so early? “It’s six-thirty,” Dad drowsily asked. I looked at Grandpa and smiled. “What’s wrong with your ankle, Kristi?” Mom asked.

Gram brought a heaping plate full of waffles and sat down. We said the blessing, and Grandpa

55

started the conversation. Then Grandpa and I took turns telling everyone about the eventful night.

“So there is a foal in the barn?” Alexis asked excitedly. “Yes.” Grandpa said, chuckling at her amazement. “But she needs to heal and get stronger.” “Are you okay, Kristi?” Mom asked. “Yes. I am fine. I was a little taken off guard by Sweet Pea’s spook so I fell off.” “She doesn’t like storms.” Gram explained. “Well, I am glad you are okay,” Dad said, a little more awake now. “I am glad that Knight was there!” Alexis exclaimed. “Me too!” Grandpa and I said in unison. “How did you sleep through the storm?” Grandma asked to those around the table. “Well,we were actually awake for a little while,” Dad said. Grandma chuckled. “We didn’t get much sleep at all.” “I can tell. Why don’t we take Alexis and Lizzy into town for a little bit while you, Grandpa, and Kristi rest,” Mom offered. “Sounds good to me!” Grandpa said. Mom cleared the table before helping me upstairs. I lay down and propped my ankle up before falling soundly asleep. ***** I woke to the sound of a bird outside the window. I looked at the clock. Two –fifteen. “I can’t believe I slept that long,” I said to Grandma’s cat, Daisy. She meowed her reply before curling up in the window for a nap. When I heard a knock on the door, I slowly sat up. “Come in,” I answered.

Page 61: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

56

Mom came in with a tray of food. “I thought you would be hungry.” “Thanks.” She wrapped my ankle. It’s looking better now,” she assessed. “That’s good.” “Grandpa fed the filly about an hour ago,” Mom filled me in. “Oh, okay. That’s great.” Alexis came in to keep me company. Mom went back downstairs. “Tell me again, all that happened! Please!” Alexis said excitedly. “Alright, Alexis.” I told her everything again. “Wow! Just like when Knight rescued Grandpa!” “Yeah, I guess it is,” I said smiling. “It was awesome to ride him!” Alexis got a game from the closet. We played and talked until supper. Gram came in. “It’s supper time. Alexis, go wash up.” Alexis left the room while Grandma helped me get down the stairs. We all sat down to eat. Dad blessed the meal before asking, “How’s your ankle?” “It’s good, thanks. It doesn’t hurt that much now either.” “Good,” he answered before taking a bite. “How was your trip to town?” Gram asked. “It was great! We called and were able to work some things out today and don’t have to go back tomorrow, but still, we will have to go back Friday.,” Mom excitedly explained. “What did you have to work out? And who did you call?” I asked. “Well, um…” Mom stammered, looking at Dad. “Anyone want dessert?” Gram asked. “I made a pie!”

Page 62: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

57

“Oh, me!” Alexis said quickly. “Me, too.” Lizzy said sweetly. Grandpa, Mom, and Dad all said they would like a piece too. Hm… that’s weird. I thought. “Kristi, would you like a piece?” Grandma asked. “Yes, please. Thanks.” “You’re welcome.” We all finished Grandma’s pie before talking some more. Everyone helped clear the table before retiring for night to our separate rooms. I said a prayer before falling asleep. **** Tuesday came and went. I wasn’t able to do much except rest. Grandpa came and told me how the filly was doing. Gram and Mom brought me food, and Alexis kept me company. **** On Wednesday Lizzy woke everyone up. “It’s my birthday!” she sang out, cheerfully. “I rolled over and gave her a hug. “Yes, it is. You are 3 now!” “Yes! Three!” she exclaimed before running out of the room. Alexis and I got up and went downstairs. We all sang “Happy Birthday” to Lizzy while eating biscuits and gravy. “We’ll have cake later for the birthday girl!” Grandma whispered to Lizzy. Lizzy clapped cheerfully. “Kristi, do you feel up to helping me in the barn?” Grandpa asked. “Yes, I would love too!”

58

Grandpa smiled, “Well, come on.” I got up and followed him out to the barn, only limping a little. I went straight to the filly’s stall. She nickered to me when I opened the stall door. I walked over to her, sat down beside her, and stroked her soft black coat. Grandpa came in and handed me a bottle for her. “I’ll feed the other horses.” “Okay, sure.” I put the bottle in her mouth. I stroked her soft neck with my other hand and spoke softly to her. “You are doing much better girl. I think you need a name.” I thought for a second about what to call her. “I think Pegasus is a good name. What do you think?” She stopped sucking and looked at me, then started to eat again, as if agreeing. “Alright, Pegasus it is then.” “One day you will fly like your dad!” I stroked her neck some more. She finished the bottle and nuzzled my hand for more. “Sorry, girl. No more right now.” I patted her back and walked out of the stall. “She ate really well,” I reported to Grandpa when he came out of the tack room. “That’s good,” he said. “I want to give Lizzy a ride today.” “Oh, she would love that!” We were walking back into the house when we heard a neigh coming from behind us. I turned around and saw Knight standing by the pasture gate. “Grandpa, look!” I exclaimed. Grandpa turned around quickly. Knight walked closer to the barn and neighed again. “He is checking on Pegasus!” I said. “Pegasus?” Grandpa asked, smiling? “Uh, yes that is the name I gave her.” “Oh. Well, I think he is checking on her. Let’s bring her out,” Grandpa said, walking back to the barn. Grandpa went to get Pegasus.

Page 64: Knight in Shining armor - WordPress.com › 2011 › 05 › knight-i… · Knight in Shining Armor! Danger! A Wild Scream Pegasus Summer’s End . 6 Chapter 1 Summer Vacation We pulled

59

I walked over to Knight, putting my hand out in hopes of him coming to me, and he nudged it. I stroked his neck and gave him a hug. “Thank you, Knight. You really are a knight in shining armor!” He nickered his reply. I continued to stroke him until Grandpa came out leading Pegasus. “Sorry it took so long. She isn’t used to lead rope and didn’t really want to walk just yet,” Grandpa explained. When Pegasus saw Knight she practically led Grandpa over to him. Knight greeted his little filly with a friendly nudge. She neighed and he answered with his own neigh. He backed up and turned to go, trotting just past the gate, then turned around. He neighed to us, reared up, and then took off into the open field. Grandpa put Pegasus back into the stall and we walked into the house. They had the cake on the table and were waiting for us to come in. Lizzy was clapping her hands, ready to blow out the candles that Gram was lighting. We sang “Happy Birthday” and let her open her presents.

**** Thursday we all packed our bags to leave. Mom and Dad were called back to town; they returned extremely excited. “Mom, it’s ours!” Mom exclaimed to Grandma. “You got it!” Grandma said excitedly, hugging Mom in celebration. Got what? I thought, listening from the stairs as Mom started talking again. Grandpa walked into the kitchen. I continued upstairs. Wonder why they are all so happy? Then I heard Grandpa ask Mom and Dad, “When are you going to tell Kristi?” “Tomorrow. Just before we leave.” Wonder what it is they will tell me?

60

**** I awoke on Friday to Alexis shaking the bed. “Kristi! Get up! “Gram has breakfast on the table.” Then she ran back out the door. I sat up and put my hair in a pony tail on the way downstairs. “Good morning!” Grandpa said cheerfully. “Good morning,” I replied, sitting down. “Where are Mom and Dad?” I asked. “They had to go to town. But they should be back soon because they called a few minutes ago saying they were on their way back,” Gram informed me, smiling and taking a bite of her eggs. I said my blessing and ate my food quietly, thinking of Knight and the land. “I really wish we could live here!” I said, taking the last bite of eggs. Grandpa looked over his newspaper at Gram and smiled suspiciously. Just then Mom and Dad walked in, beaming. We all got up to meet them. “We have some great news!” Mom said excitedly. “What is it?” I asked eager to hear this secret. “Well, we don’t have to leave today,” Dad started. “We don’t?” I asked, excited. “Nope,” and then she paused. “We are going to live here!” Mom exclaimed. “What? Really! We’ll have a house and everything?” “Yes! That is why we went to town so much!” Mom explained. “We were looking at houses and talking with a business here so I can transfer,” Dad added. “This is so great!” I said hugging them.

61

“We have looked at the school’s here, too, for you girls and I think you will really like being here!” Mom said. “Awesome!” Alexis exclaimed. “I can’t believe it!” So, can I still help with the filly and ride in the mountains?” Mom and Dad smiled. “Yes!” they said together. “We will move everything here to our new house over the rest of the summer,” Dad said, picking up Lizzy. “This is just so great! I am really excited!” “We were keeping it secret because if it didn’t work out we didn’t want you to be disappointed,” Mom explained. “Oh. Okay. I can’t wait to see the new house!” “It is beautiful!” Dad said. “Cool!” Alexis chimed in. We all talked about plans and everything for the rest of the day. I called my two best friends and told them everything that happened over the whole week. Alexis called her friend, too. Of course, they were a little disappointed that we were moving here, but they were excited for us too. “This has been such an unbelievable week!” I said to Alexis in our room that night. “I totally agree!” “This is going to be a great summer!” I said before falling asleep, dreaming of Knight once more.
