Page 4: Knauf Guidance for Safe Material Management

In this module, we highlight the most important best practice recommendations for safe manual and mechanical handling of Knauf materials. We also demonstrate some unsafe practices which should be avoided.

Module 2: Material Handling

Although we highlight some important issues, please be aware that this document does not cover all aspects of these topics and as such, should only be used to supplement existing training packages and guidance literature. There are many websites that offer comprehensive guidance on the extensive topics of manual and mechanical handing, as well as offering training opportunities, such as:Health and Safety Execute (HSE): www.hse.gov.uk

Construction Industry Training Board (CITB): www.citb.co.uk/health-safety-and-other-topics/

Gypsum Products Development Association: www.gpda.com

Build for the world we live in

1. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling materials

2. Take care to avoid breaking or unwrapping stretch wrap 3. Check that forks are level

4. Check that forks are in a suitable distance and not beyond the pack

5. Be aware of approx. weight marked on materials

6. Use sufficient labour or mechanical aids, where necessary

7. Boards are not load bearing and must not be used as platforms

8. Good ventilation when mixing/cutting products

9. Power tools only used by trained and competent people

Training Passed

In addition to safe manual and mechanical handling, it is also important that Knauf materials are applied/installed correctly on site. Knauf has purpose-built, fully-equipped training centres based in Sittingbourne and Immingham where we run a variety of practical training courses.

For more information and to complete the online booking form, please visit www.knauf.co.uk/training

Alternatively, you can contact us on 01795 416122 or [email protected] to book a course or to request a site visit from one of our experienced Technical Instructors.

Page 5: Knauf Guidance for Safe Material Management

Storage of materials can vary depending on the location available. Whether materials are being stored in a stable environment like a warehouse or in changeable site conditions, it is important to ensure that they are stored safely so that the materials are not damaged and to maintain a safe working environment. They must also be stored so that they can be easily accessed in a simple and safe manner. This module includes some simple advice for storing Knauf materials and should be used alongside your existing storage procedures.

Module 3: Material Storage

Build for the world we live in

1. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)

when storing materials

2. Material should be stored in a clean and dry environment

3. Be aware of guidance on material packaging with regards to suitable storage temperatures

4. Be aware of recommended shelf lives of products & operate a stock rotation system where necessary

5. Take care to avoid breaking or unwrapping stretch wrap

8. Recommended maximum of six pallets per stack,

depending on conditions*

7. Materials should be stacked tidily with no gaps in between

8. Metal storage – once main load split, re-strap the bundle

to reduce risk of falling

9. Where possible, avoid mixing product types when stacking

(e.g. tub and board)

<6 Pallets

* Assuming the ground is level and firm, we recommend a maximum of 6 pallets high for boards and a maximum of 3 pallets high for tubs and bagged products. Metal should be stored in racking. Please only stack to these heights if this is in line with the details on the capacity plate of your machinery. Please contact us if you require further advice.

Waste reductionKnauf has developed products to reduce waste. For example, our readymix plasters produce less than 1% material waste on site. In addition, our dedicated Technical Department can be engaged early in the project to help design-out waste through ensuring the correct systems and products are specified. Please contact us for more information on our minimal waste products and systems on 01795 416259 or [email protected]

Waste managementKnauf plasterboard and gypsum productsThis includes all plasterboards, powder plaster products and gypsum fibre products (e.g. Brio and GIFAfloor flooring panels).

This service:• provides complete plasterboard and

gypsum waste disposal options• ensures that all the material is fully recycled

and re-used for an approved end use• provides all relevant documentation

including a monthly report• offers a full range of skip sizes and

plasterboard recycling bags (PRS).

For further information on this service please contact Knauf on 0800 521 050.
