Kms PURPLE PAGES Kenai Middle School Kenai, Alaska February 2017
Baby on the Breakaway!
Welcome to Sam’s Club!
Samiel Wilson, Sammy Baker, Sammie Johnson, Samuel Roberts, and Samuel
Baisden are happy to welcome the newest KMS member of “Sam’s Club.”
Arriving just two days
into overtime, Samuel
Thomas Newton was born
during the second period at
9:05 am on February 15,
2017. He weighed 7 lbs 3.9
oz and measured 21 inches.
Mr. and Mrs. Newton are
thrilled with the arrival of
their little skater!
He almost made his
arrival on February 14th, so
the Newtons had to cancel
their Valentine’s dinner date
at Mykel’s, but they were
happy that he waited to be
born until the following
morning. According to Mrs.
Newton, it feels great to be
new parents, but it’s also
exhausting. They were very
grateful that Grandma came
from Wisconsin to help for
the first week.
Mrs. Newton said that
she’s in awe that Samuel is
part of their family, and she
can’t stop staring at his cute
face. She also stated, “He
loves to eat, sleep, and poop
a lot!” Welcome to the KMS
family, Samuel!

Winter for the First Time in a While
By Faith-Lynn Gattenby
This year we finally are having a real winter! This
year we have officially gotten seventeen inches of
snow. There were plenty of snowball fights and
snowmen wondering around in Kenai. The lowest
temperature was about -30 degrees Fahrenheit, the
highest temperature was about 40 degrees.
Mr. Cowan said, “I think that we have gotten about
3 ½ ft of snow.” He spends about four hours plowing
the snow on the days that it snows. Mr. Cowan loves
to ski up at Alyeska, so he does like the snow a little
bit.
Joyce Trenton thinks that we have gotten about 16
inches. Her favorite part of winter so far is the fluffy
snow, how white it is, and how much snow we have
gotten. Joyce loves to play in the snow, hang out with
friends, jump in the snow and go to the park at night
because the night sky is pretty. The 2016-17 winter
would have to be one of her favorite winters.
Audrey Larson thinks that we have gotten about 2½
ft of snow and that the snow goes up to her waist!!!
That is some deep snow. She is loving the winter so
far. She loves to sled and do a little bit of skiing. Her
favorite part would have to be the bunch of snow on
the trees that makes it look pretty. She loves skiing for
the KMS ski team, but she misses the time that she is
away from home.
The closest person to the answer of 17 inches of
snow is Joyce Trenton. She guessed about 16 inches
when there was really only 17!
Audrey Larson skiing for the KMS team.
Fun Facts
About Winter By Taylor Carver
The average snowflake falls
at 3 mph.
Winter cold kills more than
twice as many Americans as
summer heat does.
About 12% of Earth’s land
is covered in snow and ice.
The coldest temperature
ever recorded was -128.6
degrees Fahrenheit at
Vostok Station in Antarctica
in 1983.
The Earth is about 3 million
miles closer to the sun in the
northern hemisphere’s
winter than in summer.
A foot of snow, when
melted, only produces one
inch of rain.
-40 degrees Fahrenheit is
the same as -40 degrees
Celsius, and at that
temperature, the
condensation from your
breath can freeze.
While in winter, in the
northern hemisphere, it’s
summer in the southern
hemisphere and vice versa.

Geography Bee By Alex Martin
On January 25th, our school-wide
geography bee took place in the library.
Sorin Sorenson took first place. In
second, Jenna Tureman took the alternate
spot. Liam Whitney placed third. The
geography bee contains questions
involving cities, states, and countries
around the world.
Example: Which country is known as
the horn of Africa?
A. Madagascar B. Nigeria
C. Germany D. Somalia
Spelling Bee
The competition among the 20 class
representatives in the school-wide
spelling bee on January 26th was fierce!
So many students were spelling their
words correctly that the bee was
continued with the top six students the
following week on January 30th. After
several more tough rounds, the top
finishers were:
--Courtney Ellis – 1st place, KMS
representative to state meet
--Sorin Sorensen – 2nd place, alternate
--Taer Nelson – 3rd place
--Ashley Dahlman, Amelia Mueller &
Lillian Miller – tied for 4th place
Congratulations to all of the spellers
for their awesome efforts. Just for fun,
quiz somebody else to see if they can
spell some of the words these students
got correct: sediment, quashed,
equestrian, infuriating, implacable,
tenaciously, catastrophic, unscrupulous,
inconceivable, and enervating!

Keegan Coray By Gabby Hansen
Keegan Coray is an awesome
8th grader here at KMS. He enjoys
playing video games and he likes
to draw. His favorite thing to draw
is just anything that pops into his
head.
Keegan has two big dogs. One
of them is a black dog named
Ford, and his other dog is a tan dog
named Diesel. Speaking of dogs,
that’s Keegan’s favorite animal!
They are his favorite because they
have such big jaws, and they
survive longer. He also has two
siblings; one is a ninth grader, and
one is a sixth grader.
Keegan’s favorite subject in
school is art because he thinks it’s
fun. So far, he likes 8th grade. “It’s
not the worst grade,” he says. He’s
most excited for drafting in high
school, and the fact that it’s his last
school until college. His favorite
teacher at KMS is Mr. V.
When he grows up, he wants to
be a video game designer or an
animator. He’s looking forward to
being an adult because he can
imagine himself at a beach, until
he gets a call from work.
I asked Keegan one final
question. What would you do if
you won the lottery? “I would just
save the money.” Keegan is a
pretty cool person! So, if you
happen to see Keegan in the
hallway, make sure to say hi!

Briana Eide By Olivia Easley
Briana Eide is a 7th grade
student at KMS. She enjoys
playing volleyball with her
friends, drawing and playing
video games.
Some of her best friends are
Aubree, Hadessah and Joyce.
When they greet each other
they dab and say “spoofy”.
When they hang out together
Hadessah and Briana quote
dank memes.
She enjoys playing with her
two dogs, Taco and Precious.
Taco is a small Chihuahua and
Precious is a large golden
retriever.
Briana likes video gaming
so much that she posts some of
her own gameplays of Sims 4
on YouTube. Even her favorite
YouTuber is crankgameplays.
She has been uploading videos
for about a year now, and she
uploads a video almost every
day. Since she started she has
gained 253 subscribers! Briana
enjoys the community and how
nice everyone is, but her least
favorite thing is all of the
knockoff YouTube accounts.
While I interviewed her I
learned that she may be quiet
but after she opens up to you
she is actually quite an
interesting person to be around.
Eva Sorensen By Tania Cazares
Eva Sorensen
is a 6th grader
here at KMS.
She’s 12 years
old, and she
was born
December
30th, 2004.
She enjoys
school and
says her
brother made it seem really dramatic
and difficult. Eva is also very stoked to
be a 7th grader, because she feels that
they have many more opportunities.
Eva told me she has been to Europe
for the holidays for a family reunion.
She also mentioned that her grandpa
owns a lot of sheep there and each of her
family members gets one. Her favorite
part about Europe was getting to go to
the shops, “It’s like America, but just a
lot cooler,” Eva told me.
One day Eva would like to do
missionary work and then settle down
and become a teacher. She also told me
that she looks up to many people
because they teach everyone life lessons
that she can learn from. Her hobbies
include eating food, watching Netflix,
and playing with her cat. Also, she is a
fantastic beauty guru and she has some
rad makeup skills.
She loves her family very much; she
says they are all lovable and crazy. Her
favorite memory was when she dropped
her cat on her brother and he cried and
locked himself in his room. She still
laughs because when he swims she can
still see the scars on his back. Her
favorite thing about her family and
friends is that they roast people.
Eva says she would love to die of old
age or obesity because she would die
doing something she loved, which is
eating. Overall, Eva is a funny, kind,
quirky, sweet person, and she is
definitely a wonderful sixth grader.

“A-MAREK-A” By Taylor Carver
Have you ever had a normal conversation with
Marek Grieme? Because I haven’t! I decided to dig a
little deeper under all of his randomness, and
attempted to learn a little something about him. I
started off by asking him some basic questions, then I
“fed his craziness.”
As some of you may know, Marek has two cats
named Pearl and Pickles. Pearl is 7½ years old and
weighs 9 pounds. His other cat, Pickles, is only 2 years
old, but he is super hyper and weighs 20 pounds. He
said he loves to harass them. When they are sleeping
he picks them up and messes around with them, and
when they bite him, he grabs the back of their necks
so they aren’t able to move. One time, he decided to
make a movie about his cats called GI Joe: Operation
Cats. In sixth grade, he won third place in the Quest
Film Festival for his movie. You’ll have to watch his
movie to find out what it’s about.
Marek also loves playing video games like Call of
Duty, Halo, and Battlefield. He likes filming random
videos and movies for his YouTube channel. You can
ask him for his channel name if you would like to view
some of his artwork.
I decided to ask Marek some random questions, and
I definitely got some random answers to go along.
First, I asked his opinion on potatoes, and he said they
taste good in almost every way. When I asked about
his memes, he responded, “They give me life, and
changed who I am as a person. I’m in love with them
because I am one.” Finally, I asked his opinion on the
Kardashian family, and I definitely got a weird
answer. He said they looked normal before they found
out what plastic surgery
was, and Kim is 75% of
the same material as
Marek’s watch.
It was definitely a lot
of fun having a
conversation with
Marek. His personality
is very compelling, and
he almost always has
something to say that
will make you laugh.
Maybe you should try it
sometime!

8th Grade A-Team
Volleyball
By Gabby Hansen
This year’s volleyball team is
great! There are 13 players on A
team, coached by Mrs. Beck.
This year’s players include:
Abby Every
Amber Matthews
Bethany Morris
Cloey Followell
Gabby Hansen
Kaitlyn Walsh
Karley Harden
Kaylee Lauritsen
Lily Coon
Maria Shaginoff
Rachel Koppes
Vanessa Beck
Zaharah Wilshusen
I asked a couple of girls about
the upcoming season. Kaylee
said, “I’m most excited to play
Skyview this year because they
are our biggest competitors.” I
also asked Cloey how it felt to
make A team this year. She said,
“I’m so happy because I worked
really hard to make it.”
On February 4th, all the
schools in the district had a
jamboree at Skyview. If you
didn’t know, a jamboree is an
unscored series of 15-minute
games. Every team got to play
each other.
Cloey said, “The jamboree
was really fun, and it really
showed who our competitors
were and how well our team
worked together.” Great job,
girls!
Their first game was on
February 7th at Skyview. For
the first set, the score was 25-
8. The second set was 25-5.
Good job Kenai!!
In practice, we have many
drills we do to get better. We
scrimmage a lot, which is just
playing like we would in a
real game. We work a lot on
our skills, and if we mess up,
we just try again. I think this
season is going to be a great
one. Go, Kenai!!
Coach Beck had a few
great things to say about the
season. Her favorite thing
about volleyball is the group
of girls she’s working with
because she gets to know the
girls better and have fun. Her
favorite thing about being a
volleyball coach is teaching
students about life through
volleyball. The team’s
strongest skill is serving. Mrs.
Beck said, “ I think we’re
going to do really well
because we have a lot of
talent and kids that play
multiple sports. The girls also
have great attitudes.”
B-Team Volleyball By Gabby Hansen
This year’s volleyball team did
amazing! They went undefeated! There are
13 players, coached by Mrs. Vann. This
year’s players include:
Erin Blum
Taylor Carver
Sierra Chapman
Emmarie Edwards-Dean
Isabelle Harris
Brianne Moore
Kiara Moses
Taylor Pierce
Kara Pratt
Sierra Purugganan
Kylie-Anne Raye
Kaitlin Roumell
Dulce Santana
I asked Emmarie what her favorite
game they played was. She said, “The first
game because it really showed how our
team played together and what our team
was made of.” Erin said, “I’m really happy
to be on B-team because it’s better than
making no team, and Mrs. Vann is a great
coach.” Taylor Pierce said, “I think our
team’s best skill is talking and calling the
ball because when we talk, then it gets
6
easier to set up the ball and hit it over.”
Great job, girls!
On February 21st, they traveled to
Homer. It was a great game to watch. The
first set, they won by quite a bit. The
second set kept everyone on their feet. It
was close, but Kenai stepped up, and won
the game! Amazing job, Kenai!!
7th Grade A-Team Volleyball By Jenna Streiff
There are ten people on the 7th grade A-team: Andie
Galloway, Brooke Ashley, Erin Koziczkowski,
Hermoine Lanfear, Jenna Streiff, Kaitlyn Herrmann,
Leah English, Logan Satathite, Olivia Easley, and
Valerie Villegas.
Erin said that she has been playing volleyball since
January of 2016. Her older sister Emily (a senior at
KCHS) influenced Erin to play volleyball. Erin said
that she most enjoys serving in volleyball because it is
really easy and she’s good at it. “Volleyball is my
favorite sport so far, but I still want to try track so that
might change,” said Erin. This year, she hopes to
create new friends on the team and talk to people
outside her comfort zone.
On Saturday, February 4th, there was a volleyball
jamboree at Skyview Middle School for A-team
volleyball players. The 7th grade A-team played very
well for their first game. Even though there was no
official score, someone in the stands kept score and
said the team won almost every game.
On February 7th, the 7th grade A-team played the
Nikiski Bulldogs for Kenai’s first real game. In the
first set, Kenai was down 6 points, but we stole the ball
back and won 26-24. In the second set, Nikiski fell
behind and lost 15-25 on a missed serve. Good job,
Kenai. I can’t wait to see how the season ends.
C-Team Volleyball By Kaylee Miller
Intramural volleyball ended on January 27th. The
people that made the Kenai C-team are Taylor
Andrew, Kaya Cox, Aria Fabiano, Sophie Karl,
Cyanna Lindquist, Memphis Lyon, Kaylee Miller,
Raelynn Passe, Lexi Pierren, Echo Thiele, and Megan
Wolverton.
On February 14th, our KMS team had a game
against Seward. It was a tight game, and the team was
only two points away from the win. Lexi said before
the game she felt super nervous and felt sick. Kaya
Cox said that we did really well for the first game.
On February 21st, the team traveled to Homer. It
again was a super close game, and they were only one
point away from the win! Taylor says that we had a
good season, played great games, and had a ton of fun.
B-Team and C-Team players celebrate their season.
The Super Bowl Halftime Show By Faith Gattenby
The Halftime Show in The Super Bowl was awesome!
Lady Gaga was singing and she wore two different outfits.
The first one was a silver leotard with long sleeves and tall,
silver, sparkly boot heals. The second outfit was a belly shirt
and a pair of swimsuit bottoms. Most of the boys had silver,
spikey coats on.
There was also a circle piano, and Lady Gaga dove onto
the stage after her first song. The dance floor was like a giant
TV that she could walk on. Lady Gaga had a tattoo of a
unicorn on her right leg. There were two giant blue, glowing
stars and a lot of laser lights in the night sky. The people in
the crowd next to the stage held lights that looked like torches
that changed colors.
The songs that Lady Gaga sang were: Bad Romance, Just
Dance, Million Reasons, God Bless America, Born This
Way, and Poker Face. 7
KMS
Wrestling By Taylor Carver
This year at KMS we
have an amazing wrestling
team. There are a total of
26 wrestlers ranging from
6th to 8th grade. They have
had an amazing season so
far with many first place
wins! At boroughs on
Saturday, Kenai Wrestlers
brought home 3 first place
wins, 3 second place wins,
2 third place wins, 2 fourth
place wins, 2 fifth place
wins, and 3 sixth place
wins! Way to go,
Wrestlers!
This year’s wrestlers
include:
Zoticus Active

Nolan Rogers
Rocky Sherbahn
James Sparks

Carter Tennison
Isaiah Ticknor
Joyce Trenton
Tucker Vann
8
KMS wrestlers with Coach Navarre and Coach Moss.
Kalei Biamonte is one of Kenai’s wrestlers. She is in the 8th grade and has been
wrestling for three years now and wanted to start wrestling because she was
wrestling with some friends at a birthday party and thought that was a lot of fun.
She said practices can be kind of difficult sometimes but they can be fun also.
Kalei also told me that the traits of a good wrestler are speed, smarts, and balance.
Sammy Baker is also one of Kenai’s wrestlers. He’s in 8th grade and has been
wrestling for nine years. His favorite part about wrestling is when he makes other
kids cry. He began wrestling because his dad did division 1 wrestling for Oregon
State and that inspired him to start at a young age. Sammy said that making weight
sometimes can be hard, and days of weigh-ins he doesn’t eat, but on a normal day
his “wrestler’s diet” consists of salad with chicken. As he gets tired through a
match, his drive to get first place keeps him going.
Tucker Vann is an 8th grader that has also been wrestling for nine years. He
started wrestling because his parents wanted him to join at a young age, and he
has had awesome success since. He said that practices can be intense sometimes
and wrestlers have to practice a lot of technique. Tucker’s “wrestler’s diet”
consists of salad but no sugar. When I asked him about what keeps him going
through a match, he said the satisfaction and glory of winning keeps him going.
If you’re looking for a sport to join, and want to have fun, wrestling may be
the sport for you!
Overdue library books! By Kaitlyn Herrmann
Reading books over and over until it’s been a month can be fun, but it starts to
become a habit. Overdue books here in our school make a total of 167! The most
books a student has overdue is four, it’s not that bad, but it’s a lot unless you’re
Albert Einstein. The most common books that are overdue are the Rick Riordan
books. Why is it important for students to get their books turned in on time? Well,
according to Mrs. Gann, “So other
students have a chance to check them
out as well.” Although, if you check
out a book and you want to recheck it
out, the library gives you another
three weeks to read more! The main
point is that it’s important to get your
library books turned in on time and to
think of others’ needs as well.
By Alex Martin
Have you ever done something dumb or
stupid that has hurt you physically, like
tripping? Don’t worry, mistakes are what
makes us human. I’ve asked some other
humanoids about accidents they’ve had that
have hurt them.
One time during basketball practice, 7th
grader Gavin Dirks tripped while running to
get the ball. “As I fell, the ball bounced up and
hit me in the face,” he says. I told Gavin that
what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,
unless you’re already thick-headed. Then it
just hurts!
My mother always tells me to watch where
I’m going or else I’ll hit something, and that
is exactly what Faith Gattenby didn’t do one
day. “I didn’t pay attention to where I was
going and I ran into the wooden item people
call a door.” She told me that she got a
headache and a black eye from the painful
experience.
Levi Good was walking with a plate of
oranges while looking out the window one
day. “I tripped and bashed the plate into my
face, breaking my teeth,” he exclaimed,
describing how his teeth were all broken and
destroyed.
Keep an eye out for the next issue of Oops!
The topic will be embarrassing things you
have said or done. If you have something
embarrassing that you’ve done and think it
would make
people laugh,
please let us
know!
Random Acts of Kindness
KMS leadership students organized an entire month of kind
acts for students and staff to share with others. Some of the acts
of kindness were sincere, others a bit silly, some planned, and
some truly random. Throughout February all of these positive
gestures helped to lift everyone’s spirits and share a bit of
happiness.
On February
17th, leadership
students had
treats for sale in
the snack shack,
to give to friends
and classmates.
The tree of hearts
from February
14th with positive
messages was
also very popular
– be sure to check it out in the commons! And sticky notes with
compliments and quotes have been plastered all over the
school, from lockers to bathroom mirrors.
Other acts of kindness
have included sharing
hugs and smiles,
talking to someone
new, picking up litter,
writing friendly notes,
calling or texting
someone special, and
telling someone why
you love them. Do
you know what the
best part of this month
of kindness is? It
doesn’t have to end! Let’s keep KMS kind!

Captivating Clubs By Ambrosia Lawrence
Clubs are here, and there were many clubs students
could have chosen from. Here are some examples and
more information about them.
String Art with Mrs. Vann & Mrs. Hulien
Teacher’s opinion: String art class focused on Alaska
designs and creations They use sand paper till smooth,
paint the board for a background, and then start creating
their string art designs. Mrs. Vann decided to teach string
art because she thought it was something not done before,
and that students would enjoy it.
Student’s opinion: Cali Holmes said the reason she chose
string art was because she and her friends agreed on it.
Cali’s favorite part of string Art was nailing the nails down
the board and after, using the string to make a pattern.
Pottery Class with Mrs. Tews & Mrs. Navarre
Teacher’s opinion: “I love to do pottery, it’s something I
don’t get to do often. And kids love to do it too,” Mrs.
Tews explained. They try to complete three main projects
and learn the basics of pottery throughout. When the kids
are done with the three main projects, they can create
whatever they want.
Student’s opinion: Ellen Atchley likes getting her hands
dirty and creating bowls and cups. “I like getting to make
things that I can use to eat out of. I also like having Mrs.
Tews and Mrs. Navarre as the teachers because they are
totally awesome!”
Fashion Show with Mrs. Smith & Mrs. Rininger
Teacher’s opinion: Mrs. Smith and Mrs. R went to a
fashion and style show and got inspired to do a club based
around what they saw. Mrs. Smith said she likes to run
around and collect materials and see the kids develop
creative ideas.
Student’s opinion: Brandiee Bowers likes to tape the
cardboard together to make a hoopskirt for the dresses,
then paints over it. The reason Brandiee decided to choose
the club was because her friend Katie Stockton asked her
to join with her.
A couple other clubs were also popular. Movie Making
with Mrs. Rolph and Mindfulness with Nurse Dixie. In
Movie Making club they created movies with creativity
and their own voices to share with the class. In
Mindfulness, they talked about their emotions and did
different activities to help, like popping bubble wrap or
10 making art projects.
Cozy Day By Kaylee Miller
On January 19th, KMS had a Cozy Day. Lots
of KMS students wore their pjs and had stuffed
animals and blankets.
Tina Uta wore an American shirt, fuzzy pants,
and had her favorite blanket. When I asked on a
scale of 1-10 how comfy was the outfit, she said
100. She also said that she definitely would like
to have cozy day again.
Summer Foster wore a white shirt with fuzzy
cheetah pants. When I asked her how cozy her
outfit was on a scale of 1-10, she said “20
cupcakes.” Summer also said that we shouldn’t
have had to do a workout in gym that day,
because it got way too hot.
Lauryn Avery wore pjs and carried around a
blanket and pillow. She said that her outfit was
about a 9 on a scale of 1-10. Also, she wishes that
Cozy Day was every day!
Puzzlement Anonymous
I don’t know what’s going on. What if I said
yes, what if I said no? Why can I only say, I don’t
know. Pressured by one to say yes, pressured by
another to say no. So all I ever say is, I don’t
know. Confusion arises, thoughts come back.
What if it was good, what if it was amazing? But
what if this one good thing ruins everything?
What if it crashes and burns like last time? All
for one thing that might not work. Now you
know the reason I say, I don’t know.
Sports Spirit Day By Julia Hanson
On February 3, 2017, KMS students and staff dressed up
for a sports spirit day. Many people wore soccer, football,
baseball, and volleyball jerseys. Some went all out in their
sports teams and colors, but others, not so much.
Walking through the hallway, I could see many students
were wearing their Kenai Peninsula Soccer Club (KPSC)
jerseys. Most wore just their jersey, but Lily Coon, Rachael
Pitsch, and Vanessa Beck wore their whole uniform.
Many students were walking
proud with their football teams and
colors. The one person that really
stood out, and I think most would
have to agree, was Maccoy Castillo.
He wore his cheesehead along with
his jersey, with his head held high
supporting the Green Bay Packers.
I didn’t notice many people in
baseball uniforms walking around the
school except for Owen Plumridge.
He wasn’t supporting a certain team,
but he was wearing his baseball
helmet and carrying his
baseball bat showing his
love of baseball.
Everyone from KMS
volleyball was showing off
their new team shirts. They
are dark purple and light
purple tie-dyed with “just
dig it” printed on the back.
All four teams that received
these shirts are 8A, 7A, B,
and C.
Make sure you dress up for
our next spirit day, March 8th,
2017, for mime day. If you
dress up make sure to make a
quick detour to Mr.
Summer’s room to say hi!

Restaurant Review By Madeline Edelen
I went to a restaurant here in Kenai recently. New
Peking Chinese is a Chinese restaurant over by the Regal
Cinemas Kambe Theater.
This restaurant has a great atmosphere, delicious food,
and an amazing staff. My visit there was truly enjoyable,
and it’s a restaurant I would definitely recommend.
Their atmosphere is so relevant to being a Chinese
restaurant. Just walking into the restaurant gives off a
nice good feeling, and while diners eat their meal. The
decorations inside their building include traditional
Chinese paper fans, pictures of (what I assume) are
Chinese villages, and an outdoors nature like setting.
I myself had the sweet and sour chicken. It’s bright
red, but delicious. The meal was very large; it included
fried rice, an egg roll, and of course, sweet and sour
chicken. Waiting for our food wasn’t that long either. I
went with my mom and she ordered the house soup,
which happens to be a large sized bowl of noodle soup,
that has cabbage and other vegetables! One of my sisters
had egg noodle soup. Her soup contained egg yolk,
cabbage, and carrot, along with other small vegetable
items. But best of all, we can’t forget the fortune cookies!
Their staff, chefs and waitress are very nice. They
welcomed us into their restaurant with welcoming smiles.
Like a lot of restaurants, their waitress will come by and
see if you need a refill on your drink or how your meal is.
On your way out of their restaurant, you can see a
beautiful mountain, and depending if you go in the
evening, sometimes you can see a pretty sunset!
Although they’re closed on Sunday, the hours they’re
open are 11 am to 9 pm.

Split Movie Review
By Julia Hanson
On opening night Kara Pratt and I went to see
the film Split at the Kambe Theater. The movie was
a strong thriller! At the movie we saw many other
people that we knew.
Universal Pictures began filming this movie on
November 11, 2015, in Philadelphia. The movie
was released on January 20, 2017. The original
budget was to be $9 million, but they ended up
spending $102.6 million.
This movie is rated PG-13 and what they want
to call horror/thriller. I would have to disagree on
this part. The movie seemed to be more creepy,
leaning to a thriller, but that's based on my opinion.
This movie to me was suspenseful, but if you
don't pay attention during it, you won’t understand
parts of the movie. I caught myself sitting on the
edge of my seat during some parts. I could also feel
a little adrenaline spill through my mind during
some parts.
The best actor was probably James McAroy,
who played “Kevin Wendell Crumb,” the main
character with 23 personalities with an upcoming
24th. But is it possible to have this many
personalities? I don’t know, I guess you’ll have to
watch the movie to find out.
I would have to say this movie wasn’t as good
as I thought it would be, because the trailer looked
really intense. I would rate this movie an 8/10.
Valentine’s Day Slime DIY! By Kaitlyn Herrmann
It’s Valentine
season and
everything is red. If
you are looking for
something to give
to somebody,
follow these
instructions.
There’s nothing
better than giving
slime to the love of
your life!
Materials:
-Clear glue
-Borax (Substitutes: Liquid detergent, eye solution, contact solution, powder
detergent)
-Food coloring (preferably red)
-Bowl to mix in
-Mixing utensil
-Confetti to add to mixture (preferably hearts)
Instructions:
1. Add one bottle of clear glue to bowl
2. Add red food coloring and mix
3. Add your confetti (preferably hearts so it’s Valentine’s related)
4. Make borax solution (one cup of warm water and one teaspoon borax)
5. Add borax solution until non-sticky (don’t add too much because slime
will get hard and non-stretchy)
6. Store in a container and let sit for three days. If you don’t let sit the
bubbles will stay and it won’t become clear.
Slime is a great gift for your Valentine and very
fun to play with! The most romantic part is you
and the love of your life can sit staring at the sky
while playing with your somewhat amazing gift,
slime.

Sugar Cookie Bars By Gabby Hansen
I love to bake! I was looking around Pinterest for some recipes and came across this one. They look delicious
and it is also cool because you can decorate them any way that you want.
Thanks to www.creationsbykara.com for inspiring this idea.
Dough
· 1 ½ cups butter, softened
· 2 cups sugar
· 4 eggs
· 1 tsp vanilla
· 1 tsp almond extract
· 5 cups flour
· 1 ½ tsp salt
· ½ tsp baking powder
Frosting:
· 8 oz. cream cheese, softened
· ½ cup butter, softened
· 5 cups powdered sugar
· 1 tsp vanilla
· ½ tsp almond extract
· Dash of salt
· Food coloring (optional)
· 2-3 tsp milk, if needed
Directions:
1. Set your oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 17” by 12” rimmed baking sheet with non-stick spray.
2. For the cookie bars: Cream butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Add the eggs, vanilla, and almond
extract. Beat until it’s well blended. Whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder in a small bowl.
Add to the wet ingredients and stir until it’s well combined.
3. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until they are barely light brown. Cool completely.
4. Now for the frosting: Beat cream cheese and butter in a large bowl until smooth. Add the powdered
sugar, extracts, salt, and food coloring. Beat until smooth and creamy, adding milk (if needed).
5. Frost the cookie bars, adding whatever toppings you’d like.
If you’re completely out of ideas, I’ll get you started:
1. Green, for St. Patrick's Day
2. Pink, for Valentine's Day
3. You could also split the frosting into even amounts and dye each frosting with a different color of the
rainbow and top it with some rainbow sprinkles.
4. Also, if you're super over the top, you could pipe on some words or even draw something with your
icing.
5. Enjoy!
