ROADBLOCK Challenges 28. Funding Challenge Why cant arts be self sustainable? Fixed seaUng & capacity klpac Revenue & Expenditure + Live aspect of performance means liVle economies of scale unlike cinemas + Limited producUvity improvement (same no. of performers & Ume) + ConUnual rise in cost of goods Revenue Expenditure ConLnual Income-Expenditure Gap 2004 /05 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 29. Funding Challenge 20% of Sydney Opera Houses funding from endowment Why cant arts be self sustainable? 35% of Royal NaUonal Theatres funding from No of OrganisaLon Sponsors Arts Council England 14 12 12 10 8 100% of klpac funding from private corporaUons 6 3 4 0% from FoundaUons / 2 Government 0 2006 2011 30. Funding Challenge Theatre Group vs. Centre (klpac) Funding Size of klpacs funding requirement unprecedented: OperaUonal Cost RM3m, Funding / Sponsorship Requirement RM1.5m CommiVed to run 365 days / year, unable to cut back like groups While groups can keep their operaUonal costs to min & focus on raising money for programme, klpac cannot. OperaUonal costs (tech, manpower, faciliUes) are of equal importance to programming. LiVle avenues to fund operaUonal costs as most corporaUons are unwilling to give to that component 31. Funding Challenge A Piece of the Pie Arts industry is growing fast but nancial support from corporaUons and government bodies is not growing fast enough More arts organisaUons ghUng with each other for a piece of the arts funding pie Arts is ghUng for a piece of the philanthropy pie against educaUon, sports & community development arts being the lowest priority in all cases 32. Cost Saving Measures NET DEFICIT & TOTAL EXPENDITURE Measures implemented over the years 2006 vs. 2010 DECREASED - Prot sharing policy to control producUon losses - Cut back on big shows. Focused on smaller, lower-cost producUons - Did away with sta overLme - Less collaboraUons & oered less subsidies - Reviewed long-term maintenance contracts and opted for pay-per-use - Do less with less e.g. most producUons are encouraged to recycle set materials from our workshop or elsewhere - Energy-saving drive e.g. oce lights not switched on unUl evening, fans used over air con 33. ImplicaUons Cost of Insucient Funding Funding worry takes away Ume / eort on actual work i.e. creaUng, nurturing, educaUng Insucient funding limits real growth not the best talents can be secured, technology used etc Value of work, value of talents & value of creaUvity is not going up hence appreciaUon is not going up! 34.
