Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ), Ranchi came into being on 1st March 2009 under the provision of the CentralUniversities Act, 2009 of Indian Parliament. CUJ is a non-affiliating University and has been established with the vision topromote innovations in the teaching-learning process and to foster inter-disciplinary studies, research as well as todisseminate knowledge among the students by providing instructional and research facilities in different disciplines ofHumanities, Social Sciences and Science & Technology. The University also aims to provide capacity building programmesfor the upliftment of various sections of society. The overall objective is to aspire for improvement in the social and economicconditions and welfare of the people through our researchers, students and different facets of activities i.e. to bring in theirintellectual, academic and cultural development. Our motto is “knowledge to wisdom”. Within a very short span of four years,CUJ has been able to develop a beautiful make-shift campus with lush green trees at Brambe, in the outskirts of Ranchi, thecapital of Jharkhand with high-quality infrastructural facilities . The facilities include air-conditioned classrooms withmultimedia tools, well-equipped laboratories and language lab, etc. The University has also been allocated land (around 319acres) for permanent campus at Cheri/ Manatu, Ranchi. The construction work has started to build a campus of Internationallevel with sylvan surrounding that will make everyone proud.

Under the aegis of nine different Schools and nineteen different Centres, CUJ is offering Five Year Integrated Mastersprogrammes in English, Mass Communication, Business Administration, Indigenous Culture, Nano-Technology, EnergyEngineering, Water Engineering and Management, Life Sciences, Applied Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics),International Relations, Chinese, Korean and Tibetan Languages, as well as Certificate and Diploma courses in Human Rightsand Conflict Management, Geo-informatics, Chinese, Korean & Tibetan Languages. Besides the University is also offeringPh.D. and two year Master Programmes in certain centres.

To commemorate and celebrate 150 birth anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, CUJ organised a threeday long festival which included academic seminar, cultural performances on the plays and poems of Tagore byrenowned national and international artists (notably among them were Tanushree Shankar, the artists fromValmiki Pratibha), quiz show by Barry O' Brien , painting and poetry recitation competitions.

To celebrate the unique diversity of tribal culture and showcase its rich heritage and contemporaneity, CUJ organised a threeday long festival The festival featured a seminar on IndigenousEnvironmental Philosophy, dance and musical performances, a meet of tribal literati, documentary film festival on tribal lifeand culture, exhibitions of tribal handicraft, food culture painting, fashion show etc.

The success of Akhra 2012 and the enthusiastic response we got reinforced in us the zeal to continueour modest initiative. Akhra 2013 aspires to explore and unfold nuances of rich tribal culture of Indiaand participating nations from abroad with a view to provide a platform for the cultural synthesis and topromote inter-cultural dialogue among the diverse indigenous communities of the globe. The purposeis also to sensitize participating delegates, experts,surrounding society, and nation at large towards the relevance of the rich tribal culture & its knowledgerepository in the context of the present day world.
