Working Part-time

For accommodations at SIU, we rent an single-room apartment and provide it for international students, for around 30,000 yen / month. It may be possible for international students to rent an apartment by themselves. But in Japan, you need a“guarantor”to rent an apartment if you are a foreigner. Also, there is no furniture with rental housing in Japan and you need to buy what you require. We recommend you live in the rental apartment provided by the university.

Clothing for Winter in Sapporo

It is convenient to have fleece clothing, etc. so that you can add an extra layer inside your coat when necessary.

It is recommended to wear thin functional inner clothing so that you can adjust to both warm and cold temperatures.

It is important to prevent your legs from getting cold by wearing leg warmers when wearing tights and shorter length pants. Disposable heat packs (“Kairo”) are also useful.

Snow boots are warm and prevent you from slipping on snowy roads.

Shoes with a jagged grip are good at preventing slipping when the ground is frozen.

The climate in Sapporo has the typical characteristics of the climate on the Japan Sea coast with a cool summer and heavy snow in winter. You may be concerned that it will be very cold in Hokkaido in winter, but don’t worry. Residences and buildings are insulated against the cold and use heating, so when you are inside, you feel even warmer than inside most buildings in other parts of Japan.
