KITS NEWS Sharing the love at Kits

Walking through the main foyer this month, you may have noticed a new display. It’s the We Club’s proj-ect for Valentine’s Day. Inspired by the “Kitsilano Compliments” page on Facebook, it promotes positivity and love among the students. It’s simple: you write a compliment or an encouraging note for a friend, place it in the box and the We Club posts them on the pillars in the foy-er with pink sticky notes. So far, the project has been a success. “It’s been so popular that we’ve had to replace the scrap paper at least twice a day. When we recopied the compliments onto the hearts, there were so many that we had to get extra people to come and help!” said Jennifer H, an enthusiastic We Club member. The messages have left many people in high spirits. "This positive vibe is exactly what we need in February. We should definitely do it again!” said Ephraim C. Mika Y also com-mented cheerfully, “It brightens up my day!” The display has been great for creating a sense of school spirit and community, and is a wonder-ful sight upon entering the school in the morning. “It’s a nice thing to do in your spare time,” said Har-rison M. This heartwarming project reminds us that, as Aesop once said, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”

Multicultural Day At Kits!

Canada is known to be a cultural mosaic. With immigrants from all over the world, it's common for us to come across many different cul-tures. To celebrate these cultures, Up Club is hosting a Multicultural Day lunch event at the main foyer on March 13th . There will be sample foods from a variety of cul-tures as well as games, prizes, and performances! Hope to see you all there! -UP Club

Update for 2013 Grads:

Grad Council has hit the ground running after a much needed winter break! With only a few months left until the long anticipated gradua-tion from high school, the council has been working on some projects that will evidently make the time the grads have left at Kitsilano memorable. Valentine’s Day has urged us to spread the love by selling candy grams and roses to students who wish to recognise a special someone. Grade 12’s are all excited for the upcoming Spring Fling Formal, scheduled for March 6th, and can expect a fun night of throwbacks and party anthems to welcome the warmer months. Tickets will be on sale in the main foyer, commencing February 14th. The process of ordering grad jackets is also underway. Look out for the grade 12s strutting their stuff in their new attire in the coming weeks! Any member of the grad class wishing to join us in preparing future events is more than welcome to attend meetings on Thursdays in room 153.

A love poem from Rockridge Canyon

FEB ADVICEQ: I want to get this girl I like a present for Valentine’s Day, but I’ve left it to the last minute, and now I’m worried it’s too late. What should I do? A: Now, first of all, I want you to understand that this experience can be used as a Serious Life Les-son: things go wrong when you leave them to the last minute. And you are in a particularly difficult pickle because, unfortunately, all of the good Valentine’s Day things

from London Drugs have already been sold. But there’s no need to panic—a small box of nice Purdy’s chocolates or even some flowers paired with a cutesy card is classic and easy to come by. To make this seem less last minute, add a hand-written message to the card (and get your sister to write it if your printing is illegible.) If you’ve got a little more time on your hands and you REALLY want to impress this girl, think about her hobbies and activities: if she’s into music buy her a nice CD

or some vinyl. If she likes sports, protein bars and socks are always good options. And finally, the key to making your gift stand out is presenta-tion. So, make sure you wrap it up nice! PRO-TIP: add a little pizzazz to your present by spritz-ing it with some yummy perfume (your grandma’s will do.) But don’t overdo it. You don’t want to stand out too much. And there you go—that’s what I would do.

Improv, sha-na-na!

What does “improvising” mean to you? Was it the last time you gave a creative excuse, a perfectly valid reason for being late to class, or when you winged an oral presentation? For most, improvi-sation does not imply any more than making something up on the spot. But for some, “improv” is a combination of quick thinking, the ability to suspend disbelief, and a whole lot of ridiculous ideas. Since September, there has been a ton of improvising happening around Kitsilano, with three junior teams and one senior team working hard to compete in the Canadian Improv Games. The Canadian Improv Games is a national competition in which teams from across the country compete against one another. Teams perform different events and are scored by a panel of judges based on their ability to accept of-

fers, take risks, and use the handle (which could be anything, from an object to a relationship between two people) provided by the audi-ence. “I love improv because it’s super fun and awesome!” exclaims Hannah D., grade nine, who has spent two years in the junior team. Junior improv is for students in grades 8 to 10, and they are coached by members of the senior team as well as Ms. Bond, head of the art department. During the improv season, the teams practice several times a week during lunch and after school as they learn the basics of scene work. For the ma-jority of the performers, this was their first experience competing in the Canadian Improv Games, and they placed 5th, 12th, and 19th in the Lower Mainland. The senior team is made up of students in grades 11 and 12, and is also coached by Ms. Bond, as well as various Kitsilano alumni.

Like the junior tournament, they are playing against other Vancou-ver-area teams… but it doesn’t end there for seniors! The top two teams from the Lower Mainland are invited to compete in Ottawa at the end of March for the national tournament (and for those of you who are curious, despite having won the Lower Mainland Quar-terfinals, there are no guarantees concerning nationals and only one promise can be made: the Kitsi-lano team will have performed their absolute best, and will have had a lot of fun.)The CIG Lower Mainland Tourna-ment finals are being held Friday the 15th of February at the Round-house Theater. Tickets are $8 a person—but there’s more informa-tion on their website, canadianim-provgames.com!

Sing Diaries-Lessons Learned Over Time I feel that my life is a trek of learn-ing from mistakes, experiences and taking actions. It's the actions that I took from my mistakes, experiences, and the end results of it. I stride for my goals but the journey has just begun. So far my life mostly contains these three components: mistakes, experiences and actions.

As time passed I came to a con-clusion with myself that all the mistakes and experiences I had en-dured are beneficial and insightful. The prospective enlightened me to a different view. It introduced me to a path to which I was keen to move forwards in my life. I had learned infinetly from the mistakes and experiences over the previous months and years. It had been and still is a stressful and

tiring ride. Now as I continue on, I look forward for more insightful and challenging experiences, and the lessons to be learned over time.
